Concrete, Petals, and Sound: Inside the World of A Violet In Youth

Los Angeles at dusk is a city of contradictions. Graffiti catches the last light, jacaranda blossoms fall across cracked sidewalks, and the scent of a dozen kitchens moves through the air. It is here, within this mix of grit and color, that the band A Violet In Youth has found its footing.

The group’s music resists simple labels. Built from guitar loops, layered harmonies, and carefully placed silences, it reflects a deliberate attention to structure and texture. The sound is dense at moments and spare at others, often relying on contrast to create momentum.

Many of the band’s songs begin in quiet repetition. “If there is a progression or chord style that I can just sit and listen to for its innate qualities and play in my hands just because it’s a nice complex experience, one that causes emotions, it will be turned into a song eventually,” says guitarist and songwriter Daniella Lollie. Over time, these patterns evolve into full arrangements through collaboration and experimentation among band members.

Tension is central to their process. A Violet In Youth often blends elements that don’t immediately align—unexpected harmonies, unconventional bass lines, or rhythmic shifts that challenge the listener’s expectations. “Some type of dissonance is required in music for me, to keep my attention or deliver an element of surprise,” Lollie explains. The band draws on a wide range of influences, from Nine Inch Nails and Beach House to One Direction and Taylor Swift, resulting in songs that merge experimental tendencies with accessible pop sensibilities.

Silence also plays a role. Taking cues from the live dynamics of Nine Inch Nails, the band uses space and restraint as compositional tools. Their songs often shift between intensity and calm, creating a sense of movement through both sound and absence.

At the center of A Violet In Youth is a network of friendship and shared trust. Alongside Lollie, the lineup includes Lisa Yan (synths, piano), Amanda Erwin (drums), Kelly Kuhn (bass), and Garrett Zeile (guitar). Each brings a distinct musical background that shapes the group’s overall tone. Erwin’s percussion provides structure and drive; Kuhn, trained in jazz, contributes intricate bass lines; Zeile balances guitar work with technical engineering insight; and Yan, a classically trained pianist, adds melodic texture. Her collaboration with Lollie also fulfills a personal wish—Lollie’s late father had hoped they would one day play together.

Their dynamic thrives on openness rather than creative conflict. “Lisa makes fun of me because I’m always like ‘that sounds good!’ after one second of trying something,” Lollie says. The band credits that sense of ease as essential to their ability to explore new sonic directions without hesitation.

Yan’s contributions are especially noted by her bandmates. “Lisa does so many cool things with the keys, and I feel like a lot of the textural definitions come from the different sounds and melodies she plays,” Lollie says. “She’s classically trained but a true indie music connoisseur, so the possibilities are endless.”

Los Angeles itself feels woven into their identity. “I daydream a lot about beautiful graffiti along the train tracks at sundown and how light hits flowers,” Lollie reflects. The city’s blend of urban density and fleeting beauty often surfaces in the band’s imagery. “If our songs could capture one image of the city,” she adds, “it would be a place where concrete meets flower petals when the sun is going down and you can hear the sounds of the people and smell the food.”

That mixture of contrast—roughness and delicacy, structure and spontaneity—defines both their environment and their creative output. A Violet In Youth’s work emerges from these intersections, exploring how sound can mirror the complexity of the world that surrounds it.

Wilco, Billy Bragg To Join Forces Again At Solid Sound

Wilco, Billy Bragg To Join Forces Again At Solid Sound

by jummy84 October 23, 2025
written by jummy84

Between 1998 and 2012, Wilco and British troubadour Billy Bragg released three Mermaid Avenue albums inspired by a trunk of unpublished Woody Guthrie lyrics uncovered by his family. However, beyond a handful of brief shared appearances, the musicians never worked their way through those most of the songs in a live setting.

That will change next summer, when Wilco and Bragg will finally team up onstage at the band’s long-running Solid Sound festival. The event will return June 26-28 to MASS MoCA in North Adams, Ma., with the Mermaid Avenue live celebration set for opening night. Tickets are on sale now.

“The world needs all the Woody Guthrie it can get,” says Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. “We’re thrilled that we get to bring these songs to life with Billy.” Adds Bragg, “there’s an abiding love out there for the Mermaid Avenue albums, so I’m really looking forward to reconnecting with Wilco to bring Woody’s words to life once again.”

When folk pioneer Guthrie died from Huntington’s disease in 1967, he left behind more than a thousand sets of lyrics that were housed in a trunk. His daughter Nora left them undisturbed until 1995, when she asked longtime fan Bragg if he’d be interested in setting some of the words to music. Bragg suggested Wilco join him in the endeavor, which first bore fruit with the acclaimed Mermaid Avenue in 1998.

A second volume was released in 2000, and in 2012, The Complete Sessions boxed set arrived with a third disc of previously unheard outtakes from the original sessions. Wilco has long featured Mermaid Avenue material such as “California Stars,” “Hesitating Beauty,” “Hoodoo Voodoo” and “Airline to Heaven” in its own live sets.

“What could’ve been an embalming is instead a boozy séance, conjuring Guthrie’s ghost with some lost song lyrics and a clan who employ the mythic folkie as mirror,” SPIN wrote of the 1998 album. “The apparition rocks, sighs, casts a vote for Jesus, propositions Ingrid Bergman and generally makes everyone look good.”

Choosing the opening night of Solid Sound for the debut full live Wilco/Bragg pairing is apropos considering Tweedy and company have routinely drawn from their bag of tricks for the occasion. Indeed, Wilco has played sets with all rarities, all covers, front-to-back album plays and even a karaoke evening where it served as the backing band for specially chosen fan vocalists.

In related news, Tweedy will be a couch guest on tonight’s (Oct. 23) episode of The Daily Show. He’s in the midst of tour on his own and with his eponymous solo band, which will run through Nov. 21 in Madison, Wi., and then resume Feb. 11 in Madrid.

For now, Wilco’s only other non-Solid Sound performances for 2026 will be at its Sky Blue Sky festival in Riviera Maya, Mexico, from Jan. 15-18. That event will also feature Dinosaur Jr., Dr. Dog, MJ Lenderman, Yo La Tengo and Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy playing the music of R.E.M.

Tame Impala Unveils New Tunes On ‘Sound Check’

Tame Impala unveils three songs from its just-released album, Deadbeat, as part of the first installment of the new live video series Sound Check at Cherry Lane Theatre. Filmed at the A24-owned New York venue, the episode sports the live debut of album opener “My Old Ways” plus the pre-release singles “Dracula” and “Loser.”

With Tame Impala’s first tour since March 2023 about to begin next week, fans can get a sneak preview of the Kevin Parker-led group’s current live setup in the Sound Check video, which finds Parker encircled onstage by guitarist/keyboardist Dominic Simper, guitarist/keyboardist Jay Watson, guitarist/keyboardist/percussionist James Ireland, keyboardist/percussionist Julien Barbagallo and bassist Cameron Avery.

The three-song set was directed by Sean Durkin (The Iron Claw). After “Dracula,” one of the musicians says to Parker off-camera, “good harmonies. Did you do a wrong lyric in one of the verses?” “I fucked up,” Parker admits.

Deadbeat is the follow-up to 2020’s The Slow Rush and is expected to debut in the upper reaches of the Billboard 200 this week. After Tame Impala’s fall shows conclude Nov. 17 in Los Angeles, the group will be back in action with a spring tour of Europe and the U.K., beginning April 4 in Porto, Portugal.

Parker will also be on the DJ decks for three early December shows in Australia opening for Justice, with whom he collaborated on the French electronic duo’s hit 2024 album, Hyperdrama.

Justin Timberlake Thanks D’Angelo for Helping Him Find His Sound

Justin Timberlake has paid tribute to D’Angelo, whose three solo albums — his debut Brown Sugar, 2000’s Voodoo, and 2014’s Black Messiah — reshaped the landscape of soul music and helped ignite a new era. Following D’Angelo’s passing on Oct. 14 at 51, Timberlake shared how the visionary’s work impacted his own musical journey and how he had the opportunity to meet him backstage at Radio City Music Hall.

“I’ll never forget hearing Brown Sugar for the first time. It changed me. You changed me,” wrote Timberlake in his letter posted to Instagram Stories, calling the record the “most pivotal moment in establishing confidence in my own voice.”

“For the first time, I heard a sound that reflected the sounds I grew up with – early R&B but *now* it was intertwined with a modern edge,” he continued. “The chords and arrangement carried a mixture of church/jazz/funk, the harmonies delicately dancing with one another. It sat in my spirit and always will.”

Timberlake went on to praise Voodoo as his “favorite mixed album of all time.” He added, “The legendary players and collaborators. The sounds, the way it made colors dance around my head. It grabbed me. It shook me. I was changed once again.”

The “Selfish” singer also said that the Voodoo tour stop at Radio City was “one of the best concerts” of his life. “You. Quest. Pino. Poyser. And everyone on that stage had just ripped the faces off that crowd,” Timberlake reminisced. “And then I was lucky enough to grab a sacred moment with you backstage. And tell you how in awe of you I was.” The singer said that his previously posted photo of him and D’Angelo was taken at that exact moment and when they met, he was “kind, under-spoken.” Timberlake added, “I will never forget that.”

While Timberlake said he could go on about D’Angelo’s breadth of work including his “favorite Lauryn collab,” to “put it the way I know best in this moment: you took R&B and put it in all capitals.”

Trending Stories

“Your contribution will always be remembered. Sending love and prayers to your family. You will be missed deeply. 1 of 1. Rip trailblazer,” wrote Timberlake before signing off, “With love. One of your biggest fans.”

Timberlake joins a flood of artists across genres that have honored D’Angelo in tributes including Lauryn Hill, Beyoncé, Nile Rodgers, Missy Elliott, and more.

Young Thug Calls GloRilla ‘Ugly As
F**K While Talking w/ GF Mariah the Scientist In Leaked Jail Call: I Would Not Pursue Her’ [SOUND ON]

Another day, another leaked jail call of #YoungThug.

A new audio seemingly of the Atlanta rapper during his time behind bars has hit the internet streets. This time, Young Thug appears to be talking with his girlfriend, Mariah the Scientist, about how unattractive he finds fellow rapper #GloRilla. Making it clear that he would “not pursue” the Memphis artist, Thug calls her “ugly as f***” and questions which celebs have possibly slid in Glo’s DMS.

#KendrickLamar and #LilDurk are two other rappers Thug slammed in previous surfaced calls. While Thug has yet to address the comments about Glo directly, he recently responded to the backlash for other things he said on X:

“Bashing me only goin f**k that rap community up more, I’m the blue to this fake a** game.”

Yikes…Thug clearly had a lot to get off his chest.
