Sombr Performs ’12 to 12′ and ‘Back to Friends’

Sombr made his Saturday Night Live debut as the musical guest on Nov. 8.

The 20-year-old singer-songwriter performed two songs — “12 to 12” and “Back to Friends” — from his debut album, I Barely Know Her, which reached No. 10 on the Billboard 200 in September.

Dressed in a sharp red suit and black shirt, the New York City native opened the show with “12 to 12” alongside a full band, then returned later to perform “Back to Friends” from behind the piano before stepping out for an emotional delivery.

Sombr, who writes and produces all of his own songs, is having a breakout year. His debut album, I Barely Know Her, arrived in August and produced his first three Billboard Hot 100 hits: the top 20 singles “Back to Friends” (No. 12) and “Undressed” (No. 16), as well as “12 to 12,” which peaked at No. 41.

The musician, whose real name is Shane Boose, recently earned a Grammy nomination for best new artist. He recently wrapped the sold-out North American leg of his first-ever headlining tour, which spanned 31 shows across the U.S. and Canada. Every venue was upgraded to meet demand, with multiple cities adding extra dates, including a triumphant hometown finale in New York City.

The latest episode of the long-running NBC sketch comedy show also featured first-time host Nikki Glaser. The comedian is set to return as host of the Golden Globes on Jan. 11.

SNL returns on Nov. 15 with actor Glen Powell as host and musical guest Olivia Dean.

Watch Sombr Perform ’12 to 12,’ ‘Back to Friends’

The NYC native debuts on the late night show with two tracks from his first EP, I Barely Know Her

Singer-songwriter Sombr debuted on Saturday Night Live with two hits from I Barely Know Her, his debut album that he released in August.

The New York City native, who just picked up a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, opened with “12 to 12,” an MTV Video Music Awards nominee for Song of the Summer.

Sombr returned later at the piano with “Back to Friends,” which he alone wrote and produced.

The lead single from the ten-track LP, “Back to Friends” is one of Rolling Stone‘s Best Songs of 2025 So Far, as it “plays out like an impassioned conversation that bleeds through the walls and captures the melodrama of teenage love.”

Sombr, whose real name is Shane Boose, “performs with a distinct internal confidence and external charm that has been notably absent in the withering releases from many of his male contemporaries in pop,” as Rolling Stone‘s Larisha Paul wrote in a positive review of his first album.

Sombr’s stop at SNL coincided with the end of the North American leg of The Late Nights & Young Romance Tour, which he sold out. Early next month, he’ll head to New Zealand and Australia before beginning a run of shows in Europe in February.

“It’s hard to step back and be like, ‘Wow, this is amazing’ when everything is happening so fast, but it is the best thing that has ever happened to me,” the 20-year-old revealed to MTV in September, before making his awards show debut at the VMAs. “Being able to meet all these people, go to all these countries, and see all these new faces and beautiful people who connect with my music — it’s all I ever wanted to do in my life, so it’s the best thing ever.”

Sombr Addresses Online Drama After Fan Called His Show ‘Cringe’

by jummy84 October 20, 2025

Sombr has responded to criticism he received from a concertgoer who apparently “hated” his show at Anthem in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 13, so much so that she recorded a nearly nine-minute TikTok video, which has since gone viral.

“I thought I was chronically online, but it’s just come to my attention that there’s a TikTok drama going around because a 25-year-old attended my concert and was basically complaining that there were too many tweens there, I was making too many brain-rot jokes, and she just thought it was a cringe concert,” Sombr began in his response.

Sombr’s response came a few days after the fan posted her video, in which the 25-year-old began by cautioning anyone planning to attend an upcoming show of his to “not spend your money on a Sombr concert.” She went on to explain that while attending his Washington, D.C. show, she was shocked to find his fanbase was primarily comprised of “tweens,” said she did not enjoy his jokes, and described a segment of the concert called the “Sombr Dating Show,” where he brought audience members onstage to call their exes. She also criticized him, claiming he said “super vulgar stuff about getting his dick sucked” while on stage, and asked his fans to “bark for me” — behavior she felt was inappropriate given his young audience.

She added, “It just doesn’t seem like he knows how to entertain. He’s maybe too young. Maybe he has to grow into it. I don’t know. Dancing was terrible, singing was terrible.”

While she referred to the experience as “a nightmare,” she admitted that the other members of the audience appeared to love it, with one fan apparently saying, “This is my generation’s David Bowie.” She then said, “I’m so sorry, slender man? We’re picking him, we’re picking the weird dancing dude?” whom she likened to Napoleon Dynamite and added that the show was “cringe.”

Editor’s picks

In his response, Sombr accused her of “body shaming” him, saying that “it’s kind of started a massive body shaming hate train directed towards me on a lot of videos of me on the internet right now.”

He went on to say, “I totally respect people having opinions, but I am a 20-year-old artist, freshly 20. And if you’re 25 years old and you’re going to come to my concert and not expect people younger than you to be there, when I, the artist, am five years younger than you, it’s just a skill issue.”

As far as his jokes, Sombr said that people who go to his concerts would be familiar with his online presence, adding, “I’ve never uttered a serious word in my life.” Plus, he said he spends “five minutes” making jokes at his shows, while the rest is music.

“Live a little, enjoy life,” he continued. “Every age, sex, sexuality, gender, race: Everyone is welcome in my concert, ad I mean everyone. You guys need to find problematic people to hate on, because I am just existing.”

Sombr’s debut album, I Barely Know Her — featuring hits “Back to Friends” and “12 to 12,” both of which he performed at the VMAs — arrived in August. Since his album dropped, his tour, which runs through November, has sold out, and he’s slated as the Saturday Night Live musical guest with host Nikki Glaser on Nov. 8.

sombr: I Barely Know Her Album Review

He also has pretty solid pop instincts. It’s easy to appreciate his way with a hook, and his vocal range remains impressive beneath all the effects. You might wonder if a Tobias Jesso Jr.-style future writing for other artists is in the cards. Plus, he’s surrounded by talented people: An album with Prince’s guitarist Wendy Melvoin on several songs and Shawn Everett on the mix is guaranteed to groove and sparkle in all the right ways. Unlike his peers who let their voices dissolve into the background, sombr is up front to the point of a jumpscare on opener “Crushing,” where he announces his presence with overdriven Julian Casablancas-indebted saturation. The polyphonic choruses of “We Never Dated” and “Back to Friends” lend some weight to breathless early comparisons to Brian Wilson.

A problem is that sombr’s lyrics have this strange attitude towards women (in awe of, in fear of) that lands him closer to “Smart Girls” than “God Only Knows.” There’s now a Hot 100 hit with this lyric: “I don’t want the children of another man to have the eyes of the girl I won’t forget.” That line caught on for a reason, if not a good one, and it’s indicative of how the breakup songs are just slightly too mean-spirited to give him the benefit of the doubt. In “Come Closer,” he’s falling over himself for a femme fatale, saying, “You’re the only one I want/And I ain’t one of your pawns.” He’s more enjoyable with endearingly corny wordplay like “I miss the days when we were crushing on each other/Now you’re just crushing my soul, my lover.” But this trick also has its limits, getting overly cute on songs like the shuffle “Dime” (“You’re a ten and I’m a man that needs a dime”) and reaching unintentional humor when repurposing the famous line from Brokeback Mountain on “I Wish I Knew How to Quit You.”

A pair of songs break from the yearncore formula and lean into pure melodrama, and they’re the most promising. Current hit “12 to 12” recalls Brandon Flowers’ gloriously histrionic 2015 solo record The Desired Effect, reviving nu-disco by sheer force of will and a swaggering vocal performance. The playful ’80s synths suggest someone leaning all the way into campiness, a surprisingly good fit for an artist who can come off suspiciously sincere. The other highlight is closer “Under the Mat,” where he amplifies a heartbreak to epic Springsteen levels. There are still clunkers like the worryingly vague line “She and I didn’t see eye to eye on politics and such,” but when sombr and his lovr are moving into a shoebox apartment, it’s hard not to root for them. Instead of hammering in the point of a relationship that fell apart, this time he’s interested in examining why it fell apart. As much as they loved one another, these two simply couldn’t overcome their differences. She was a suburban girl. He was a city boy. And no, sombr can’t make it any more obvious.

Cardi B, Sombr, Doja Cat, Lorde's NYC Pop-Ups: Unique Fan Experiences

Cardi B, Sombr, Doja Cat, Lorde’s NYC Pop-Ups: Unique Fan Experiences

by jummy84 September 10, 2025

Cardi B, Sombr, Doja Cat, and Lorde have made use of the city’s spontaneous energy to give their fans unique experiences

The day after the MTV Video Music Awards, Doja Cat told her fans to meet her in Union Square in New York City. There, an old school phone booth was set up (sponsored by Spotify) where fans took pictures and picked up the phone to hear snippets of her new album, Vie. Doja Cat herself stopped by that afternoon, decked out in an Eighties-inspired outfit that fits her new music’s sound and aesthetic, to pass out roses and greet the massive crowd that took over the park.

These days, that’s a pretty standard scene in NYC: Artists have become infatuated with the city once again and are promoting their albums with unique pop-up experiences and promo tactics that lean into the chaos. Back in April, Lorde doubled down on her big move to Manhattan by inviting her fans to join her in Washington Square Park. So many people flooded the space that the cops shut down her appearance before she could even leave her apartment. She showed up that evening to dance to her new single, which was filmed for her “What Was That” music video.

In late August, Sombr shut down part of Canal Street to perform songs from his debut album, I Barely Know Her, which was released a few hours later. The 20-year-old singer grew up just a few blocks away from where the stage was set up, referring to the portion of the Lower East Side he shut down by its modernized nickname “Dimes Square.”

Another New York native, Cardi B, took a more humorous approach to promoting her long-awaited sophomore album, Am I the Drama? Wearing a Rasta beanie, sweatpants, and a sweatshirt, she laid out physical copies of her album (and all its different covers) on a black comforter while waving around incense sticks for a viral video. Every New Yorker is well acquainted with the dudes hawking everything from purses to Blu-Rays on busy streets.

These situations feel a little less curated and stiff than a pre-scheduled appearance at a pop-up merch experience or hyper-secured CD signing. Each of these artists are leaning into the spontaneity of the city, giving their fans short notice for unique experiences. Plus, the excitement always pays off: It’s difficult to not draw a crowd in the city, even if it’s just based on passersby trying to figure out what the hell is going on. And for the fans who did skip work or school to swing by, it definitely makes for a good story.

Sombr Makes MTV VMAs Debut With ‘Back to Friends’ and ’12 to 12′

The 20-year-old musician continued his breakout year with a medley featuring “Back to Friends” and “12 to 12”

Sombr is only looking ahead with his debut performance on the MTV Video Music Awards main stage. The 20-year-old musician added more fuel to the fire of his breakout year with a medley featuring the hit single “Back to Friends” and the standout record “12 to 12.”

Sombr’s set started off in a photo booth, where he emerged with the opening lines of “Back to Friends.” As the song progressed, he worked his way over to a performance stage with NYC club posters plastered across the walls as his band played on. Then it was time to really get the party started. “This one’s for the girls that get it,” Sombr announced before launching into “12 to 12.” His dancers made out under disco ball lights while he partied with a bunch of girls. Whatever sadness lingered from his heartbroken opening song was gone by the time he reached the “12 to 12” bridge.

Sombr also received his first VMAs nominations at this year’s show. The singer-songwriter was up for Best New Artist against Ella Langley, Gigi Perez, Lola Young, Alex Warren, and the Marías. He took home the award for Best Alternative for “Back to Friends,” while “12 to 12” appeared as a contender for Song of the Summer but lost out to Tate McRae.

“It’s hard to step back and be like, ‘Wow, this is amazing’ when everything is happening so fast, but it is the best thing that has ever happened to me,” he told MTV about his quick rise when he was named MTV’s Global Push Artist for September. “Being able to meet all these people, go to all these countries, and see all these new faces and beautiful people who connect with my music — it’s all I ever wanted to do in my life, so it’s the best thing ever.”
