Solo travel doesn’t mean lonely travel: Here is how to make connections on the road

by jummy84 November 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Solo travel can be one of the most freeing experiences in the world, but it also pushes you out of your comfort zone in many different and unexpected ways. Somewhere between navigating new cities, eating alone and figuring things out on your own, you learn just how open the world can be when you are, and often, the people you meet become as memorable as the places themselves.

Travel creator Sanjana Goswami (@undermypinkumbrella) believes that travelling alone doesn’t have to mean travelling lonely. In fact, she says some of the best friendships of her life began on unfamiliar streets, long bus rides, and hostel common rooms. “I have met some of the kindest, funniest, and most unexpected people while traveling solo,” she wrote in her caption. Here’s how to build real connections on the road the easy way.

Travelling alone? Here’s how to meet friends who feel like characters from your favourite travel chapter.

Get comfortable being alone first

Before you can meet new people, you need to enjoy your own company. It’s counterintuitive, but true. When you’re relaxed, content and moving at your own rhythm, you naturally give off an energy that invites conversation. Whether you’re reading in a café, strolling through a market, or eating alone without guilt, that comfort becomes the first step to forming friendships.

Say “yes” more often

Solo travel opens the door to spontaneous opportunities and saying yes to them can change your entire trip. If someone at your hostel asks if you want to join them for dinner, a beach day, or a sunrise hike, go. You don’t make memories by sitting in your bunk.

Take group tours

If you’re shy or unsure where to begin, group activities take the pressure off. Walking tours, cooking classes, pub crawls, art workshops, and day hikes offer built-in shared experiences, which make bonding feel natural instead of forced. You’re all learning, exploring or laughing together, and that becomes an instant icebreaker.

Stay in hostels

You don’t have to be a backpacker to enjoy hostel life. Many modern hostels are clean, safe and beautifully designed, and their common rooms, kitchen spaces and nightly events are designed to help travellers mingle. Movie nights, game evenings, local food tastings or rooftop gatherings can lead to friendships that last long after checkout.

Ask questions and stay curious

If you ever find yourself stuck, remember this: curiosity is charm. Simple questions like “Where are you from?”, “Where did you just travel from?”, or “Do you have any recommendations for tonight?” can open entire conversations. Most solo travellers want to talk, they’re just waiting for someone else to start.

Know that solo travel doesn’t mean lonely travel

The biggest mindset shift? Realising you don’t need a group to belong. Be open, be kind, and trust that connection happens in surprising ways; on trains, in queues, at cafés, or while watching a sunset next to a stranger. Your next friend could literally be on the next bus.

Tina Knowles Says She “Went Into Such a Depression” After Ending 33-Year Marriage: “I Didn’t Know How to Be Solo”

Tina Knowles is opening up about the emotional journey that led her to end her 33-year marriage, sharing that the choice took immense courage and left her unsure of how to rebuild her life. Speaking at the LA Times Studios’ fifth annual Inspirational Women Forum & Leadership Awards — where HELLO! was present — the 71-year-old designer and author discussed the difficult period that followed her divorce from Mathew Knowles.

Tina, whose memoir Matriarch was released in April 2025, said her life had been deeply intertwined with Mathew’s because of their decades of marriage and their work supporting Destiny’s Child. “I was married for 33 years,” she said. “You can imagine how intertwined our lives were with Destiny’s Child and that career.”

She explained that the closeness of their personal and professional lives made the decision even harder. Tina recalled thinking, “How do I untangle this ball of yarn? Because my life is so intertwined with my ex-husband.” She served as the stylist and creative lead for Destiny’s Child, while Mathew acted as the group’s manager.

Ultimately, she decided to leave the marriage — a turning point she described as emotionally overwhelming. “When I finally decided that I would get out of the marriage … I went into such a depression,” Tina said. She added that she struggled with suddenly being on her own: “I didn’t know how to be solo without this other person who I had been with for 33 years.”

Tina also admitted she feared starting over later in life. She remembered thinking, “I’m 59. Where am I going to get a man? I’m not young anymore.” But she told the audience that choosing herself became a crucial act of courage. “Women are strong,” she said, noting that she eventually rebuilt her confidence and sense of independence. Today, Tina says she hopes her story encourages other women who feel trapped or afraid of beginning again. She emphasized that finding the bravery to make a major life change is difficult — but possible.

bitchy | Princess Kate repeated a Catherine Walker coat for a solo Armistice Day event

by jummy84 November 12, 2025

The Princess of Wales was out today on a scheduled event for Armistice Day (Veterans Day here in America). She visited the National Memorial Arboretum, and this was her first solo event in a month or longer. Kate was the “senior royal” sent to observe a moment of silence for veterans. This job usually goes to a “blood royal,” but there are so few of them around these days, this event is left to the married-ins. Um, where the hell is William?

Kate wore a repeat – she’s worn this Catherine Walker coat to Remembrance Sundays in years past. I call this one her Sgt. Pepper coat because of the tassels and chest embroidery. During her outing on Sunday at the Cenotaph, I noted that Kate’s eyebrows look somewhat crazy right now. You can see it again in these photos. Is she just filling them out too much? What’s going on there?

It’s also noteworthy that Queen Camilla was out this morning too. Cam stole Kate’s thunder on Armistice Day! Camilla visited the London Paddington train station as part of the ‘Poppies to Paddington’ event.

Aryan Simhadri Talks Grover’s Big Changes and Solo Quest (Exclusive)

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

What To Know

  • In Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2, Grover embarks on a dangerous quest to find Pan.
  • Percy, Annabeth, Clarisse, and Tyson set out to rescue Grover and retrieve the Golden Fleece to save Camp Half-Blood from threats led by Luke and the Titan Kronos.
  • Aryan Simhadri teases where Grover’s Season 2 story begins, talks about Grover getting his reed pipe, and shares what will surprise fans about his story.

Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) has been tasked with protecting demigods for years. Now, the demigods need to save him in Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 on Disney+.

“We waste no time putting Grover in danger,” Simhadri told TV Insider in our Fall Preview interview. The Percy Jackson Season 2 trailer doesn’t waste time on that front either. Grover is snatched by a sea monster’s tentacle and dragged away in the first 15 seconds of the trailer. He’s later heard saying, “Percy, you’ve got to find me,” and we see him tied up in what’s no doubt a scene with the blind cyclops Polyphemus (Aleks Paunovic), who is Grover’s biggest foe in Season 2.

After Camp Half-Blood’s protective border is breached, Percy embarks on an epic odyssey into the Sea of Monsters in search of his best friend, Grover, and the one thing that may save the camp — the legendary Golden Fleece. With help from Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries), Clarisse (Dior Goodjohn), and his newfound cyclops half-brother Tyson (Daniel Diemer), Percy’s survival becomes essential to stopping Luke (Charlie Bushnell), the Titan Kronos, and their impending plan to bring down Camp Half-Blood — and ultimately, Olympus.

So, where is Grover when the peril begins? The last time we saw him was in the Season 1 finale, when he was about to search for Pan, the god of nature. In Season 2, fans will get to see Grover on this quest. Simhadri shared what to expect in Grover’s first scenes in Season 2.

“We join him as he’s in this forest, and right away from the second we meet him, he’s already off,” the actor told TV Insider. “He stumbles upon this satyr corpse, which is very telling of what’s in Grover’s immediate future for this season.”

“We get to see a little bit of what happens to him between Season 1 and Season 2,” Simhadri continued. “He sends postcards to Percy, which was lovely, and we just pick up right alongside him.” One of those postcards is seen in the trailer (see below).

Disney+

Grover is far from the first satyr to embark on a quest to find Pan. As explained in Season 1, many have tried, but none have returned. The blind cyclops Polyphemus is responsible for many of those tragic tales. Grover comes across “a lot” of dead satyrs the closer he gets to the cyclops, Simhadri warned, and once he gets to Polyphemus’ cave, it’s a “traumatic” sight.

“If you think about the quest for Pan as a bunch of linear events that happen — if he’s at point B and we start at point A — Polyphemus’ cave is a huge roadblock that a lot of satyrs eventually had to come up against. And so far, none of them have come back alive,” Simhadri explained. “So it’s interesting. It’s a cool dynamic to see Polyphemus making light of the fact that Grover shows up in his cave. To Polyphemus, Grover is just another snack. To Grover, this is his whole life. And so seeing him step on satyr skulls and bones strewn all over the place, it’s a traumatic position for Grover to be in, let alone the fact that he’s alone from friends and family and home.”

Grover’s dangerous quest meant that Simhadri was doing stunts on his first day of filming the second season, “which was sick,” the actor raved. Another thing that excited him was Grover finally getting his reed pipe. Satyrs use reed pipes to channel their woodland magic. When they play certain songs, the musical instrument can help them do things such as capture enemies, grow plants, and more. While Grover’s reed pipe is in the first book, The Lightning Thief, it wasn’t included in Season 1 of the show.

Grover will receive his panpipe at the beginning of Season 2, Simhadri shared (you can see him with the instrument in the photo at the top of the page). This was something he talked to the writers about including in the second season.

“I’m so glad that we found a place for this,” Simhadri said. “I talked to Daphne about it, who’s one of our incredible writers, because it wasn’t there in Season 1. And we were both like, ‘Yeah, it makes sense that Grover would now have this opportunity to showcase his skills.’”

Grover feels like a “complete” character to the actor now, thanks to this addition.

“That’s his way of fighting,” Simhadri said. “It’s part of his kit, and so I feel now like it’s finally complete. Grover in Season 2 is basically the Grover that we’re going to see for the rest of the show.”

“We get to see him getting his pipes, and it’s right off the top,” he added. “It’s kind of an immediate up for him, which was selfishly awesome for me. It’s cool that he now has this physical evidence that he’s older and he’s a little more capable.”

Simhardri also shared what he thinks will surprise fans the most about Grover’s plot this season.

“I think it’s easy to forget that Grover’s on his own quest a lot of the time, because he can’t really bring it up to Percy and Annabeth. They don’t really understand in the same way that he does,” he said. “They were abandoned by their godly parents, and so was Luke. And that’s why all of this started. Grover, and kind of any satyr, has always had his.”

“He’s more vulnerable than everyone thinks he is,” Simhadri continued. “He’s portrayed as this protector who is solely there for Percy and Annabeth, but this season we see him on his own and what that does to him. The Golden Fleece is kind of the closest that he gets to Pan in a long, long time, the closest that any satyr has ever gotten to Pan. And so to see him be the one to bear that kind of, I guess, divine responsibility, I don’t want to make it sound too religious, but it’s huge for him. You get to see him lose it a little bit. He kind of just fully cracks. That’s something that we’ve never really seen from Grover before.”

Percy Jackson Season 2 debuts with two episodes on Wednesday, December 10.

written by jummy84

In typically irreverent fashion, Paramore’s Hayley Williams has purposefully leaked details for her first-ever solo tour, which will begin March 28 in Atlanta. Williams intended to tour solo in 2020 behind her album Petals for Armor, but was unable to do so during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The upcoming dates will be in support of her latest collection, Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party, which was released digitally this summer and on vinyl yesterday (Nov. 7) by her Secretly Distribution-distributed label, Post Atlantic. Ego Death also landed four Grammy nominations yesterday: Best Alternative Music Album, Best Alternative Music Performance (for “Parachute”), Best Rock Performance (for “Mirtazapine”) and Best Rock Song (for “Glum”).

The 20-track Ego Death was produced by Daniel James and sports contributions from Steph Marziano, Elise Joseph James, Brian Robert Jones, Joey Howard and Jim-E Stack.

Williams will be supported on the road by Water From Your Eyes and Snuggle, with more shows expected to be added, including summer festival appearances. As of yet, there are no details regarding ticket on-sale timing.

by jummy84 November 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Earlier on Friday, Hayley Williams earned four Grammy nominations in recognition of her latest solo album, Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party. The news coincided with the album’s physical release; if you recall, the Paramore singer initially leaked the album on her website over the summer before giving it a proper digital release. In a similar fashion, Williams has now “leaked” dates for a supporting tour in support of Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party.

The 20-date North American leg kicks off on March 28th in Atlanta, and also includes stops in Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Nashville, Austin, Oakland, and Los Angeles, among other cities. Williams will then play shows in the UK and Europe in June. Water from Your Eyes will provide support for the majority of the dates.

As the dates were leaked via Williams’ website, on-sale ticket information has not been officially announced. Stay tuned for more details.

At the 2026 Grammys, Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party is nominated for Best Alternative Music Album, while her songs “Parachute” and “Mirtazapine” are up for Best Alternative Music Performance and Best Rock Performance, respectively. Additionally, “Glum” received a nomination for Best Rock Song.

Why Blackpink Solo Members Are Not Eligible for Best New Artist Grammy

Why Blackpink Solo Members Are Not Eligible for Best New Artist Grammy

by jummy84 November 7, 2025
written by jummy84

The last year was a big one for Blackpink fans as each group member showed off their solo prowess by releasing excellent debut albums: Lisa delivered Alter Ego, Rosé gave us Rosie, Jennie released Ruby, and Jisoo shook things up with Amortage. Despite such a big year — especially for Rosé with “APT.” — many Blinks may be wondering why none of the girls earned nominations for Best New Artist.

The term “new” in the category title is key word here. The Best New Artist category recognizes “a breakthrough into the public consciousness and notably impacted the musical landscape” in the last year. The rulebook states that “any artist who had achieved a breakthrough in a prior eligibility period” is not be eligible for the award.

Since Blackpink is (without doubt) the biggest K-pop group in history, and has been for years, its members are ineligible for the category as solo acts. (Despite their massive appeal, the group has never earned a Grammy nomination.) According to Recording Academy rules, members of a group are considered part of that collective entity, meaning that any previous Grammy submissions made under Blackpink would also apply to each of its members individually.

Although it’s unclear how many times Blackpink or its members have been submitted for the Best New Artist award in the past, another limitation is “that an artist cannot have submitted for Best New Artist more than three times previously, whether as a new artist or as a solo artist who emerged from a group.”

At the 2026 Grammys, Blinks will be able to root for Rosé, who earned multiple nominations for “APT.” with Bruno Mars, including for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Duo/Grupo Performance. She’s the only member who received award nominations.

Trending Stories

While there were no nods for Blackpink (which released the superb single “Jump” in July) either, the 2026 Grammys will see great girl group representation. The Best New Artist category, for example, includes Katseye.

The Grammys have been slow in embracing the rise of K-pop. BTS has been mostly limited to the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category and has yet to win any trophies. This year, “Golden” from Kpop Demon Hunters made history for the genre, earning numerous nods, including Song of the Year.

Global superstar Lisa is taking major strides in her solo career, and fans couldn’t be more thrilled. The Thai singer and BLACKPINK member has officially signed with Wasserman Music as her worldwide touring representative, according to an announcement from her own label, LLOUD. The move is being seen as a strong indication of a possible global solo tour, marking another milestone in Lisa’s rapidly expanding career.

In addition to her own management under LLOUD, Lisa is also represented by RCA Records for international music distribution. Her latest partnership with Wasserman will further strengthen her global presence, opening doors to high-profile touring opportunities. She is also part of WME (William Morris Endeavor), a top Western talent agency representing artists like Adele, Calvin Harris, and Billie Eilish, as well as Hollywood stars such as Ben Affleck, Christian Bale, and Matt Damon.

Currently, Lisa continues to perform alongside Jisoo, Jennie, and Rosé as BLACKPINK wraps up their DEADLINE World Tour. The group is also reportedly filming their highly anticipated comeback music video, scheduled for release in December with their next full-length album. With this timeline, fans speculate that Lisa’s solo world tour could kick off in 2026, featuring hits from her albums LALISA and ALTER EGO.

Moreover, she is set to star alongside Ma Dong-seok and Lee Jin-wook in Extraction: Tigo, a spin-off of the Chris Hemsworth action franchise. The film will mark Lisa’s Korean acting and action debut, signaling an exciting new chapter in her ever-evolving global career.

by jummy84 October 24, 2025
written by jummy84

Poppy has unveiled her first original solo song of 2025, “Unravel,” following a couple of notable collaborations earlier this year.

The song starts out as a radio-friendly rock ballad with Poppy delivering clean ethereal vocals until the 2:18 mark, when she goes into full scream mode. The track was produced and co-written by former Bring Me the Horizon member Jordan Fish, while an accompanying music video/visualizer was directed by Sam Cannon (watch below).

Poppy’s previous releases this year include a cover of the Wham! classic “Last Christmas,” the collaborative single “End of You” with Amy Lee and Courtney LaPlante, and a guest vocal on BABYMETAL’s “from me to u.” She recently wrapped up a headlining tour, and will support Linkin Park on a South American jaunt kicking off this Friday, October 25th.

The Dodos’ Meric Long Announces Solo Album, Shares New Song: Listen

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Two decades after co-founding the Dodos with drummer Logan Kroeber, singer and guitarist Meric Long will release his first solo album under his own name. The record, Kablooey, is out this Friday, October 24, via Polyvinyl. Below, listen to the new album’s lead single, “A Small Act of Defiance.”

Long worked on Kablooey in between shifts as an in-house engineer at John Vanderslice’s Oakland, California, recording studio, Tiny Telephone. “This album was really meant to be fun and not too purposeful,” Long shared. “I put a lot into it as one would expect, but I really just wanted to make something that was fun and allowed me to follow my more ‘amped-up kid in a candy store’ impulses.”

Kablooey follows the Dodos’ 2021 album, Grizzly Peak. It also follows Long’s true solo debut, a 2018 album called Barton’s Den that he released under the moniker Fan.
