Wilco, Billy Bragg To Join Forces Again At Solid Sound

Between 1998 and 2012, Wilco and British troubadour Billy Bragg released three Mermaid Avenue albums inspired by a trunk of unpublished Woody Guthrie lyrics uncovered by his family. However, beyond a handful of brief shared appearances, the musicians never worked their way through those most of the songs in a live setting.

That will change next summer, when Wilco and Bragg will finally team up onstage at the band’s long-running Solid Sound festival. The event will return June 26-28 to MASS MoCA in North Adams, Ma., with the Mermaid Avenue live celebration set for opening night. Tickets are on sale now.

“The world needs all the Woody Guthrie it can get,” says Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. “We’re thrilled that we get to bring these songs to life with Billy.” Adds Bragg, “there’s an abiding love out there for the Mermaid Avenue albums, so I’m really looking forward to reconnecting with Wilco to bring Woody’s words to life once again.”

When folk pioneer Guthrie died from Huntington’s disease in 1967, he left behind more than a thousand sets of lyrics that were housed in a trunk. His daughter Nora left them undisturbed until 1995, when she asked longtime fan Bragg if he’d be interested in setting some of the words to music. Bragg suggested Wilco join him in the endeavor, which first bore fruit with the acclaimed Mermaid Avenue in 1998.

A second volume was released in 2000, and in 2012, The Complete Sessions boxed set arrived with a third disc of previously unheard outtakes from the original sessions. Wilco has long featured Mermaid Avenue material such as “California Stars,” “Hesitating Beauty,” “Hoodoo Voodoo” and “Airline to Heaven” in its own live sets.

“What could’ve been an embalming is instead a boozy séance, conjuring Guthrie’s ghost with some lost song lyrics and a clan who employ the mythic folkie as mirror,” SPIN wrote of the 1998 album. “The apparition rocks, sighs, casts a vote for Jesus, propositions Ingrid Bergman and generally makes everyone look good.”

Choosing the opening night of Solid Sound for the debut full live Wilco/Bragg pairing is apropos considering Tweedy and company have routinely drawn from their bag of tricks for the occasion. Indeed, Wilco has played sets with all rarities, all covers, front-to-back album plays and even a karaoke evening where it served as the backing band for specially chosen fan vocalists.

In related news, Tweedy will be a couch guest on tonight’s (Oct. 23) episode of The Daily Show. He’s in the midst of tour on his own and with his eponymous solo band, which will run through Nov. 21 in Madison, Wi., and then resume Feb. 11 in Madrid.

For now, Wilco’s only other non-Solid Sound performances for 2026 will be at its Sky Blue Sky festival in Riviera Maya, Mexico, from Jan. 15-18. That event will also feature Dinosaur Jr., Dr. Dog, MJ Lenderman, Yo La Tengo and Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy playing the music of R.E.M.

Study says introducing this fruit to your baby as one of the first solid foods will boost gut health and immunity

A fruit rich in antioxidants builds up their gut, immunity health. Study says babies also develop fewer allergy symptoms.

It’s an exciting period for parents as they introduce solid foods to their babies. But did you know that this early stage of solid food can also help your baby develop a healthy gut and immune system? A study published in Frontiers in Nutrition on September 4 highlighted the value of a fruit when introduced as one of the first solid foods. The researchers named it blueberry.

Blueberries support gut bacteria

The researchers, in an experiment, gave infants freeze-dried blueberry powder daily, which is around 2 ounces of fresh blueberries. This powder was either mixed into purees or breast milk. The results revealed that babies who consumed blueberry powder developed a much more diverse range of gut bacteria. It suggests that babies develop a healthier gut environment when they are given blueberries, which are rich in antioxidants. Their gut microbiota became far healthier.

This finding is significant as it shows that adding bacteria to infants’ early diets may establish a healthier gut environment. The early solid food stage is a critical period of development, making it act as a base for future gut health.

Blueberries boost immunity

Besides gut health, blueberries also positively influence the immune system. The babies developed fewer allergy symptoms. The researchers looked at immune markers, which are signals in the body that depict how the immune system is working. So after consuming the babies, their bodies showed some changes, like lower inflammation, which in turn makes the body less likely to develop allergies.

So parents need to be mindful of which foods they introduce during the solid food stage, as it is a critical period of development for the babies. The food they eat can influence their gut and immune system, and even affect allergy risks later in life.

Kanye West ’In Whose Name?’ Documentary Opens to Solid Box Office

The box office numbers have arrived for the documentary In Whose Name? from filmmaker Nico Ballesteros, who was granted unvarnished access to Kanye West — now known as just Ye — in the six tumultuous years following his public embrace of conservative politics. The film opened to a limited release, screening at around 494 theaters nationwide. In its opening weekend, the film grossed $776,000, a strong domestic box office performance for a documentary without significant marketing behind it.

For comparison, the Oscar-winning doc No Other Land logged a cumulative $420,000 a month after opening in January, on its way to earning $2.4 million to date. It’s Never Over, the doc about Jeff Buckley, also saw opening numbers in the $420,000 range. Becoming Led Zeppelin, released in February, is 2025’s top-earning doc opening to over $2 million, though it screened internationally.

Clips from In Whose Name?, including one in which Ye explosively lashes out at Kris Jenner, have been circulating around social media for several days, as the film’s unfettered level of access presents a view of Ye that many fans have never seen. The film offers a behind-the-scenes view of some of his most controversial moments in recent years, most notably the aftermath of his White Lives Matter T-shirt and subsequent antisemitic Twitter tirade.

While In Whose Name? comes short of offering any explanations as to how Ye went from a beloved musical icon to effectively a social pariah, it does provide a clear view into the world of celebrity in our highly digitized and politicized age. The team behind the film hopes to screen it in more theaters in the coming months, as well as make the movie available on streaming platforms. Its strong first-week performance suggests there is, in fact, an audience hoping to decipher the mind of Ye all these years later.

The doc was executive produced by Patrick Hughes, Nick Jarjour, Amy Ann Singh, and Justin Staple. Attorney Simran Singh, who executive produced Selena: The Series, is also credited as a producer.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this article misstated the number of screens that carried the film.
