The Kerala Story Director Slams Filmfare Awards, Calls It A ‘Tamasha’ After Laapataa Ladies’ Big Win

by jummy84 October 14, 2025
written by jummy84

The recently concluded Filmfare Awards 2024 in Ahmedabad celebrated what many called a landmark year for Hindi cinema, with Laapataa Ladies emerging as the night’s biggest winner. The film bagged 13 trophies, including Best Film, while Abhishek Bachchan and Kartik Aaryan jointly won Best Actor, and Alia Bhatt took home Best Actress. However, not everyone was impressed. Director Sudipto Sen, best known for The Kerala Story, has lashed out at the awards, calling them a “tamasha” and accusing the organisers of promoting hypocrisy in the name of art.

Taking to Instagram, Sen shared a strongly worded note criticising the Filmfare Awards and the films that dominated this year’s ceremony. “This year Filmfare truly is an expose of Indian ‘nouvelle vague’… A blatantly plagiarised film… a film which is a tutorial of brutality and a film which did not survive the box office for more than 72 hours took away most of the crowns,” he wrote. “As expected, the best work of 2024 remains elusive. Realised why Filmfare was so vocal against The Kerala Story receiving National Awards. I am happy that this ‘wood’ community does not recognise, invite or choose us.”

Sen didn’t hold back as he criticised the glamour and perceived insincerity of Bollywood’s award culture. “We are spared from faking smiles, faking camaraderie, and most importantly, not indulging in any sycophancy,” he continued. “In the end, I am happy that we are saved from hobnobbing with this tamasha in the name of cinema in Mumbai and clicking selfies in Cannes. At least we are spared from these ugly hypocrisies and fake tapestry in the name of cinema.”

In his caption, the filmmaker elaborated further on his disillusionment with the Indian film establishment: “I never expect anything great from any Indian cinema establishment, particularly when it is media or cinema journalism. Mostly enamored by the glamour and rich world of the stars, exactly the way people from villages and small cities gather in front of Mr. Bachchan or SRK’s house. They actually have zero contribution towards cinema, cinema art, the way world media does for world cinemas.”

While Sen refrained from explicitly naming the films he criticised, many inferred his targets from the context. The “blatantly plagiarised film” appeared to be a dig at Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao. The “tutorial of brutality” was widely understood as Kill, a high-octane action film backed by Karan Johar, and the one that “did not survive the box office for more than 72 hours” likely referred to I Want To Talk.

Sen’s post quickly caught attention online, reigniting debate around credibility, favoritism, and artistic merit in Bollywood award functions. Some agreed with his sentiments, praising him for calling out what they saw as a long-standing culture of superficial celebration. Others accused him of bitterness, pointing out that The Kerala Story had already received national recognition and that dismissing other films’ artistic merit was unfair.

This isn’t the first time Sudipto Sen has stirred controversy. Just last month, he won the National Award for Best Director for The Kerala Story, which also earned the award for Best Cinematography. The film, based on the story of women from Kerala allegedly forced to convert to Islam and join ISIS, polarized audiences and critics alike. While it was hailed by some as a bold and necessary story, others condemned it as propagandist and divisive.

Despite the backlash, The Kerala Story proved to be one of the most commercially successful and talked-about films of the year, grossing over ₹250 crore worldwide. Sen’s strong words against Filmfare now underline his ongoing rift with Bollywood’s mainstream circles — a clash between what he perceives as “authentic cinema” and what he calls “fake glamour.”

For many, Sen’s post has once again raised uncomfortable but necessary questions about whether Indian film awards truly celebrate cinematic excellence or simply reward popularity and influence within the industry.

Hayley Williams Releases New David Byrne Duet “Open The Door,” Slams Kid Rock

by jummy84 October 12, 2025
written by jummy84

In another reason why they should just form a dang band already, Hayley Williams and David Byrne have released another new collaboration in “Open The Door.”

The sentimental, sunshine-laden ballad is from the soundtrack to the new Netflix film The Twits (based on the beloved 1980 Roald Dahl children’s novel). In the film, two kids and a “family of magical animals” team up to battle the “meanest, nastiest villains [who] pull a trick to take over their town.” Check out the song below.

Related Video

The same day the pair released “Open The Door,” Williams made a surprise appearance during Byrne’s October 10th show at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. Byrniams/Willyrne performed their other duet, “What Is the Reason for It?” (off Byrne’s latest, Who Is The Sky?). Then, later in the set, Williams returned for a rendition of Paramore’s 2017 jam “Hard Times” (of which Byrne previously released a cover and performed regularly across this latest tour). Check out footage from that show below.

The pair first linked up in 2023/2024 when Paramore covered “Burning Down The House” for the A24-led re-release of 1984’s Stop Making Sense concert film. Byrne told People recently that they’ve maintained regular contact ever since, and he has nothing but adoration for Williams’ talent.

“She has an extraordinary rapport with her audience,” Byrne said. “It’s very sincere and very close, which I made note of that. I just thought that’s really amazing.”

Byrne also noted that “What Is the Reason for It?” came together rather organically, and that he and Williams both managed to be in town at the same exact time. He added, “I just texted her and said, ‘Do you want to come by and sing on this?’ And she said yes.”

It’s been a busy few weeks for Williams. In addition to these collabs, she’s been further supporting her latest solo album, Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party. And speaking of that very LP, the title track continues to garner the singer some contempt from certain conservative figures.

The song, which features a line about a “racist country singer,” is hands-down a sturdy middle finger to one Morgan Wallen.

“It could be a couple [singers], but I’m always talking about Morgan Wallen. I don’t give a shit,” Williams recently told The New York Times’ Popcast podcast. “Find me at Whole Foods, bitch, I don’t care.”

Yet even as Williams is clearly talking about someone else, that didn’t stop Kid Rock from commenting during a recent Fox News appearance.

“You know what’s stupid is people who think they’re cooler than art thou that worry about their outfit every day like some of these rock singers that live here in Nashville — I won’t stay any names — or these chicks running around on their campuses with their blue hair, their five nose rings.”

In turn, Williams responded to Rock’s comments with an Instagram story (per Stereogum), spinning a hilarious little yarn that places the “rapper” in  some rather interesting context.

“I remember being a little kid in Meridian, MS the first time I heard a Kid Rock song [‘Bawitdaba’]…at Poplar Springs Elementary’s annual field day. I thought it sounded dangerous and cool. Later, I learned I wasn’t allowed to listen to him ’cause the Southern Baptist Church said he was evil. My how the turn tables!”

So, who wins the Williams-Kid Rock beef? Well, one of them is regularly collaborating with David Byrne and the other’s on The Ingraham Angle, so we’ll let you decide.

Neil Young to Remove Music From Amazon as Singer Slams Jeff Bezos

by jummy84 October 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Neil Young is pulling his music from Amazon, the legendary singer-songwriter revealed in a blog post published on his personal website on Wednesday (Oct. 8).

In an apparent protest against the Trump administration, Young wrote, “The time is here. FORGET AMAZON,” under a header that includes the words, “BEZOS SUPPORTS THIS GOVERNMENT,” a reference to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Related

“Soon my music will not be there,” Young continued of Amazon. “It is easy to buy local. Support your community. Go to the local store. Don’t go back to the big corporations who have sold out America.”

The revelation came in a post that included a larger call by Young for people to discontinue shopping at Amazon and the upscale grocery chain Whole Foods, which the online retail giant acquired in 2017. He also seemed to call for a boycott of Facebook, writing “FORGET FACEBOOK” under a logo of the social media platform’s parent company, Meta. In August, Young left Facebook after a Reuters report claimed Meta had allowed AI chatbots to communicate with minors using “romantic or sensual” language.

“We all have to give up something to save America from the Corporate Control Age it is entering,” Young continued. “They need you to buy from them. Don’t.”

The singer also referenced the current shutdown of the U.S. government, writing, “They shut down our government your income your safety your family’s health security. Take America Back together, stop buying from the big corporations support local business. Do the right thing. Show who you are.”

Young has been openly critical of President Trump over the years. Last month, he released the song “Big Crime” with his band Chrome Hearts that railed against recent actions by the president — who is never mentioned by name — with lyrics like, “No more money to the fascists/ The billionaire fascists/ Time to blackout the system/ No more great again.”

Young’s music remained available on Amazon Music at the time of publishing. Representatives for Amazon Music and Young’s label, Warner Music/Reprise, did not immediately return requests for comment.

This isn’t the first time Young has boycotted a digital music provider. In January 2022, the star pulled his catalog from Spotify over its lucrative deal with Joe Rogan, through which it retained exclusive rights to, but not ownership of, the host’s wildly popular Joe Rogan Experience podcast. In a post on his website at the time, Young accused Rogan of spreading “misinformation” about the COVID vaccine on the podcast. “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both,” he wrote.

Young’s stance inspired several other artists to remove their catalogs from the service, including Joni Mitchell and Young’s Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young bandmates David Crosby, Graham Nash and Stephen Stills. Young restored his music to the streaming giant in March 2024 following the expiration of its exclusive deal with Rogan. The previous September, Billboard estimated that Young’s decision to remove his catalog from Spotify cost him roughly $300,000 in lost recorded music and publishing royalties up to that point.

More recently, artists including Massive Attack, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Deerhoof and Sylvan Esso have pulled their catalogs from Spotify over founder Daniel Ek‘s reported $1 billion investment into defense company Helsing, which sells AI software to inform military decisions.

Box Office ‘Self-Booking’ Is Defaming Industry: Karan Johar Slams Producers, Star Entourages

by jummy84 October 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Veteran filmmaker Karan Johar, who recently partnered with Adar Poonawalla by selling a 50% stake in Dharma Productions, has never been one to shy away from candid discussions about the inner workings of the film industry. In a recent conversation on the show Game Changers, Johar spoke frankly about two major, interconnected issues plaguing Bollywood’s economics and ethics: the rising practice of manipulating box office figures through “corporate bookings” and the inflating costs associated with large star entourages.

The Problem of ‘Self-Booking’

The term “corporate bookings,” referring to producers allegedly buying large blocks of tickets for their own films to inflate opening weekend numbers, has become a troubling staple in recent industry discourse. Johar didn’t mince words when addressing this practice, preferring to call it “self-booking.”

While he adopts a mock-indifferent tone toward the individuals engaging in it, his underlying concern for the industry’s integrity is palpable. “Everybody does what they have to. If I decide to give myself ₹1 crore, and then I celebrate, have a party at night that I have earned ₹1 crore. Am I a fool, or am I an intelligent man? I leave that for you to decide,” he commented. He added that if a producer is happy spending their own money to achieve a temporary high or a social media post, they should proceed. “You are spending on yourself, so why should anyone judge you for spending your own money?”

However, Johar stressed that this tactic fundamentally harms the entire ecosystem. He believes the industry itself is “defaming itself” by peddling these fabricated figures. The key distinction, he argued, is that the audience cares only about the quality of the film, not whether the box office success is “corporate or desperate.”

He acknowledged that “self-booking” can sometimes offer a much-needed “kickstart energy” to a movie. He even suggested that what is now unethical manipulation might someday evolve into an accepted promotional tactic. Yet, he concluded with a timeless truth: “If the film has to work it will work. That is the bottom line, if it’s good, it will anyway work.”

Johar also questioned the logical sustainability of these costly manoeuvres. “How much will you do, after all? I can’t do it for every day. Can do it say for weekend, then for the first Monday… But at some point I’ll run out. I have to stop. If the film doesn’t have legs, it’s going to fail anyway.”

The Ethical Problem of Star Entourages

Shifting focus, Karan Johar tackled another growing financial drain: the exponential costs associated with large star entourages. While he admitted that these expenses are a relatively small part of a colossal film budget, he views the issue as an ethical problem rather than a financial one.

He pointed to exorbitant charges for hair and makeup artists, joking that he’d prefer his own children, Roohi and Yash, take up the profession because “they are making more money than a lot of other people.”

Johar outlined his stance on what producers should and shouldn’t cover. “I have an ethical problem with entourages, not a financial one. We set a fixed budget for such needs,” he explained. He asserted that actors should pay for anything beyond that fixed amount, such as personal trainers or specific dietary requirements, unless it is a necessary part of the film’s creative demand, like a sports drama requiring a specific physique. For a “regular hero,” Johar stated, their job is to look good and fit, and they should personally manage the associated costs of healthy living.

The Call for Producer Unity and Actor Grace

When questioned about how producers are attempting to curb these rising costs, Johar admitted that a lack of unity is their greatest challenge. “The producers are not united. We often discuss these matters, but no one follows through.”

However, he shared a sign of change, noting that the industry is now pushing back by capping budgets for necessities like hair and makeup. “We tell them upfront this is all we can offer. If you want anything extra, please handle it yourself.” He showed respect for the many actors who are now paying for their own additional hair and makeup.

His final appeal was to the actors, urging them to show some restraint and gratitude. “My problem is with actors who are getting mammoth payments and still expect the producers to pay for their basic needs. Show some grace.” He expressed bewilderment that these “small issues” often become points of contention, especially questioning the necessity for some actors to travel with a massive entourage of six to eight people.

Johar’s dual concerns highlight the precarious balance of Bollywood economics, a challenge he is currently navigating. While a recent production of his, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, starring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, struggled at the box office, another Dharma production, the critically acclaimed Homebound directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, has earned widespread praise and was selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars this year. His comments serve as a clear call to action for the industry to prioritize ethical filmmaking and long-term credibility over short-term vanity metrics.

Robin Williams’ daughter slams those ‘puppeteering’ him with AI online – National

Robin Williams’ daughter, Zelda Williams, has asked the public to stop “puppeteering” and sending her AI-generated videos of her late father, who died by suicide in 2014.

“Please, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad,” Zelda, 36, posted on her Instagram story on Monday.

“Stop believing I wanna see it or that I’ll understand, I don’t and I won’t. If you’re just trying to troll me, I’ve seen way worse, I’ll restrict and move on,” she wrote.

“But please, if you’ve got any decency, just stop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop. It’s dumb, it’s a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it’s NOT what he’d want,” the post continued.

It is not the first time Zelda, an actor and filmmaker who directed the 2024 horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein, has spoken out against the creation of AI content featuring her father.

In an Instagram post from 2023, she stated that attempting to recreate his voice and likeness using AI was “personally disturbing,” according to the BBC.

Williams, who was 63 when he died, was famous for starring in films such as Mrs Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting and Good Morning, Vietnam, but Zelda says regurgitated digital content is an insult to his legacy.

“To watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to ‘this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that’s enough’, just so other people can churn out horrible TikTok slop puppeteering them is maddening,” she wrote.

“TikTok slop” is a term used to describe low-quality content generated using artificial intelligence that is often circulated on social media.

“You’re not making art, you’re making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of the history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else’s throat hoping they’ll give you a little thumbs up and like it. Gross,” she continued.

Williams was reportedly struggling with mental health issues around the time of his death.

Zelda’s comments follow a controversy surrounding the introduction of an AI actor called Tilly Norwood.

Norwood is a character created entirely by artificial intelligence, dubbed Hollywood’s first “AI actor” by her creator, producer, and comedian, Eline Van der Velden, who has expressed her intentions to sign Norwood to a talent agency.

Tilly’s introduction has sparked concern in the film industry.

In a statement Tuesday, the Screen Actors Guild said that “creativity is, and should remain, human-centered.”

“To be clear, ‘Tilly Norwood’ is not an actor, it’s a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation,” the guild said.

“It has no life experience to draw from, no emotion and, from what we’ve seen, audiences aren’t interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience.”

In a post on Nowrood’s Instagram account, her creators wrote, “to those who have expressed anger over the creation of our AI character, Tilly Norwood: she is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work, a piece of art. Like many forms of art before her, she sparks conversation, and that in itself shows the power of creativity.

Emily Blunt spoke about Norwood during an episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, referring to the idea of an AI actor as “terrifying.”

“Does it disappoint me? I don’t know how to quite answer it, other than to say how terrifying this is,” Blunt said.

Robin Williams’ Daughter Slams Fans For Sending Her ‘Gross’ & ‘Maddening’ Al Videos Of Late Actor

#RobinWilliams’ daughter, Zelda Williams, is begging his fans to stop sending her “gross” and “maddening” AI-generated videos of her late father.

In a recent message shared to her IG Story, Zelda expressed, “Please, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad. Stop believing I wanna see it or that I’ll understand, I don’t and I won’t.” She further criticized the practice, stating, “You’re not making art, you’re making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings.”

She added in a second post, “And for the love of EVERYTHING, stop calling it ‘the future.’ AI is just badly recycling and regurgitating the past to be reconsumed.” This isn’t the first time Zelda has addressed the issue. In 2023, she condemned the use of AI to recreate her father’s voice, calling it “disturbing” and advocating for more stringent regulations against such practices in the entertainment industry.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor Slams Transphobia, Defends Trans Community

by jummy84 October 6, 2025
written by jummy84

After being uplifted throughout her career by the LGBTQ+ community, disco-pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor is making sure that the community knows she stands firmly with them in a new interview.

In an interview with The Independent published Sunday (Oct. 5), the “Murder on the Dancefloor” hitmaker spoke out about the state of politics surrounding the trans community in 2025, sharing her disdain at seeing increased attacks against the community, especially in online spaces. Speaking specifically about those spreading transphobic views online, Ellis-Bextor said she was dismayed at the fervor with which many of them spoke.

“These people make trans people their whole personality and spend their entire day checking their socials and being angry, whereas trans people themselves just want to be under the radar and live their lives,” she explained. Her fears are confirmed by the data. A February study found that instances of hate speech on X rose by roughly 50% in the months after Elon Musk purchased the platform in 2022.

Ellis-Bextor continued, adding that movements such as Pride felt more vital than ever. “There was a time when Pride felt like a celebration of all the shoulders that people were able to stand on, but now it feels like it’s an absolute political necessity,” she said. “I suppose you have to be optimistic that things will get better again, but I do get very down about it.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the singer explained that she’s had to deal with people in her personal life turning on the trans community over the course of the last few years. “I had one of my girlfriends go on quite a weird flip, and it was really affecting me,” she explained. “And you definitely do need to assert that you feel really differently, and then just find ways to support what you believe is being on the right side of history.”

The interview comes a few weeks after the release of Ellis-Bextor’s new album Perimenopop, the singer’s return to disco-pop after the runaway success of her song “Murder on the Dancefloor” in 2024 thanks to its prominent sync in Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn. Ellis-Bextor spoke to Billboard that year about earning her first Billboard Hot 100 entry thanks to the film. “My relationship with the song is great, I perform it all the time — it’s been the song that people associate the most with me,” she said. “But to have it having this little wild adventure on the charts is actually bonkers.”

Sunil Pal Slams Aryan Khan’s Web Series “The Ba***ds of Bollywood,” Says He Mocked the Industry That Made His Father a Superstar

Aryan Khan, son of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, made his directorial debut with the Netflix web series “The Ba***ds of Bollywood.” The show has received mixed reactions from audiences and critics alike. While many praised Aryan’s bold storytelling and satirical take on the film industry, comedian Sunil Pal has strongly criticized it for mocking Bollywood.

Sunil Pal Criticized Aryan Khan

In an interview with one of the media houses, Sunil Pal expressed his disappointment, saying, “You are criticizing the same Bollywood that made your father such a superstar!” He added that Aryan should have shown more respect toward the industry that has given his family so much fame and success. Let us tell you that Shah Rukh Khan, who has ruled Bollywood for more than 33 years, has delivered countless blockbusters and established himself as one of the most loved actors globally.

Interestingly, SRK himself appears in a cameo role in Aryan’s show, which also pokes fun at several well-known actors and industry practices. Despite this, none of the celebrities who were referenced or portrayed in the show have publicly objected to its content. Sunil Pal further stated that Aryan had all the resources and support to create something more inspiring. He said, “Aryan had no shortage of fame, money, or platform. If he had waited for five more years and worked harder, he could have made something even Sanjay Leela Bhansali would have appreciated.”

“The Bads of Bollywood” features an impressive ensemble cast including Lakshya, Sahher Bambba, Bobby Deol, Raghav Juyal, Anya Singh, Mona Singh, and Manoj Pahwa. Several Bollywood celebrities, such as Karan Johar, Emraan Hashmi, and Shah Rukh Khan, make special cameo appearances. The series, streaming on Netflix, explores the darker and humorous sides of the glamour industry, blending satire with social commentary. While Aryan Khan’s debut has sparked controversy, it has also established him as a daring new voice in modern storytelling, one unafraid to question the very world he comes from.

Bigg Boss 19: Salman Khan Slams Nehal Chudasama For Constantly Targeting Tanya Mittal; Mridul Tiwari’s Emotional Meltdown | Glamsham.com

Bigg Boss 19’s much-awaited Weekend Ka Vaar episode is all set to air tonight, and host Salman Khan is back with his signature reality checks. In the latest promo, Salman is seen addressing the lack of participation and rising personal conflicts in the house, particularly singling out Mridul Tiwari and Nehal Chudasama.

The episode opens with Salman taking a dig at the housemates, saying, “Mera intezaar kar rahe ho aap log? Main kya bolu aur yaha par kya hi farak padta hai?”
(“Are you all waiting for me? What should I say — does it even matter here?”) He then turns his attention to Mridul, commenting on his low visibility in the house: “Mridul, jab niklo ye show aap dekho. Aapko khud pe shaq hoga ki main ye show pe tha ya nahi.”
(“Mridul, when you leave and watch the show, you’ll wonder if you were even part of it.”)

Mridul breaks down in response, explaining that he was raised to be respectful and not engage in fights. Salman, however, makes it clear that he’s not asking for unnecessary drama—just involvement. “Participation doesn’t mean fighting. It means having opinions,” he says firmly.

Next, Salman shifts focus to Nehal Chudasama, confronting her for constantly targeting Tanya Mittal. “Nehal, aap sirf ek hi shakhs ki baatein kar rahi ho—Tanya. Humko nahi pata iss obsession ko kya naam dein,” (“Nehal, you’re only talking about one person—Tanya. We don’t even know what to call this obsession.”)

Tonight’s episode promises drama, emotions, and much-needed wake-up calls.

The forthcoming Bigg Boss 19 Weekend Ka Vaar will be full of high drama and bitter confrontations, with host Salman Khan calling out several contestants for their recent activities in the house. Salman can be seen in the new promo voicing his utter disgust at Kunickaa Sadanand’s actions, blaming her for fueling the fight between Amaal Mallik and Abhishek Bajaj during the captaincy task.

Salman starts by questioning Amaal Mallik to explain precisely what he uttered throughout the task that resulted in the explosive argument with Abhishek. When Kunickaa attempts to interject and set the record straight, Salman firmly shuts her down, telling her, “Kunickaa, apni izzat apne haathon mein hai.” He goes on to condemn her for doing the same things over again and causing unnecessary drama in the house. Referring to her as “the source of all the trouble,” he begs her to be more mature and considerate of the implications of her words and actions.

Ashnoor Kaur is also targeted as Salman interrogates her for insisting on being called into the confession room and presented with footage pertaining to the incident. He reminds her that the show does not operate on the terms of contestants and that such demands are based on arrogance and not on fairness.

Salman does not leave it there. He also admonishes Nehal Chudasama for constantly harping about Tanya Mittal, calling it an unhealthy obsession. This constant friction between the two has been a common problem within the house, and Salman asks Nehal to change her focus from personal grudges to the real game.
