“Bruised Sky” Is Poppy at Her Most Metal

by jummy84 November 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Heavy Song of the Week is a feature on Heavy Consequence breaking down the top metal, punk, and hard rock tracks you need to hear every Friday. This week, we highlight Poppy’s “Bruised Sky.”

Poppy is a chameleon when it comes to genre, but lately, she’s embedded herself with alt-metal royalty, collaborating with the likes of Amy Lee in the studio and with Linkin Park onstage.

It would seem some of that hangtime has rubbed off on her, as she goes full metal on her latest single “Bruised Sky.” Her right-hand studio collaborator, Jordan Fish, also brings his past work with Bring Me the Horizon to the table here, given the overall metalcore treatment of the production.

The heavy guitars and general sonic aggression lets Poppy throw her voice in all directions, exercising both her highest clean register as well as death growls. She wears this style well, even if she’s only dabbled in it thus far. It begs the question: How much more metal does her upcoming album Empty Hands have in store?

Honorable Mentions:

Black Swan – “If I Was King”

Black Swan are a veteran supergroup featuring Headbangers Ball heroes Robin McAuley (McAuley Schenker Group), Reb Beach (Winger, Whitesnake), Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, The End Machine, ex-Dokken), and Matt Starr (Ace Frehley, Mr. Big). On the group’s new single “If I Was King,” McAuley’s recognizable pipes are right out front, with a just a bit of aged grit to his hyper melodic delivery. Meanwhile, Beach supplies a robust guitar arrangement that keeps the track from stagnating. Fans of any of the involved band members’ other projects — particularly McAuley Schenker Group and Winger — will enjoy this immensely.

Flatwounds – “Vilify”

Flatwounds is a great name for a heavy rock band, because you gotta have flatwound strings on your bass if you’re gonna pull off divebomb riffs and slide those fingers. Otherwise you’re asking for blisters. Anyways, this choice nomenclature been claimed by Flatwounds, an Albany-based grunge revival group with a classic Alice in Chains vibe thanks to the gravelly voice of frontman Colin O’Hare. The band’s fat skronky riffs are also a blast from the past, filled with pure groove — riffs that sounds like they’re fun to play on a bass with flatwounds. Their latest single “Vilify” is excellent. We’re keeping an eye on these guys.

Raven – “Metal Militia”

When the Metallica Kill ‘Em All tribute album was announced, we circled this cover by Raven. Among the numerous NWOBHM acts featured on the comp, Raven hold particular significance in that Metallica’s first tour was supporting Raven on the “Kill ‘Em All for One” tour in 1983. The British metal pioneers are known for their many anthems about rock and metal, making “Metal Militia” really the only correct choice for them, as far as covering something from Kill ‘Em All. The Gallagher brothers’ signature craziness comes across great here too, with John letting out his cartoonishly high-pitch falsetto for the chorus.

Baller League UK returns to the Copper Box Arena in London for its second season.

The six-a-side tournament pits 12 teams of ex-professionals, semi-pros, and more than a few wildcards, which are backed by former footballers, celebrities, and social media personalities, against each other over an 11-week campaign.

A place in the Final 4 and a shot at the title on the line but entertainment is the indoor futsal-style league’s priority and there are plenty of crazy rules thrown in to ensure that it sets itself apart from everything else available for UK football fans.

SDS FC, led by YouTuber Sharky, were crowned champions in March after beating MVPs United, backed by Maya Jama and Alisha Lehmann, 4-3 in the final of Season 1 at the O2 Arena.

Both teams are back for the new season, alongside some returning teams, backed by the likes of Ian Wright, John Terry, and Micah Richards, and some new additions – Chloe Kelly’s Clutch FC and Idris Elba’s Rukkas FC.

RadioTimes.com brings you all the details you need to know about Baller League Season 2, including dates, kick-off times and how to watch the games live on TV.

When is the Baller League Season 2?

Baller League Season 2 starts on Monday 27th October and runs for a further 10 weeks.

Matches start at 5:30pm every Monday, with the final fixture kicking off at 10pm.

How to watch Baller League Season 2 on TV and live stream

Unfortunately, Baller League Season 2 UK will not be broadcast on TV but you can watch live on YouTube.

Every match will be shown live on the Baller League UK channel from 5:15pm every Monday.

The inaugural season of the 6-a-side competition was broadcast on Sky Sports but it appears that agreement has not been extended.

YouTube can be streamed through a computer or apps found on most smart TVs, phones, and consoles.

Where is Baller League Season 2 held in the UK?

Baller League Season 2 will be played at Copper Box Arena in the Olympic Park, Stratford, London.

The Season 1 finals were held at the O2 Arena in Greenwich, London, but it has not yet been confirmed whether that will again be the case.

What is Baller League?

Baller League is a concept first hosted in Germany by former international stars Mats Hummels and Lukas Podolski.

A number of high-profile names from the world of sport will manage six-a-side football teams made up of former Premier League footballers, rising stars, those released by major clubs, futsal players, celebrities and social media sensations.

KSI is headlining the UK edition of the format. The 12 teams will battle one another throughout the season with the top four to go into a head-to-head knockout-style finale.

AIIMS Raipur orthopaedic surgeon shares real reason for middle-aged man’s frozen shoulder: ‘Sugar levels were sky high’

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

What does diabetes have to do with frozen shoulder – a debilitating but normally temporary condition that is characterised by an extended period of pain and stiffness in your shoulder? In an October 14 Instagram video, Dr Dushyant Chouhan, an orthopaedic surgeon from All India Institute Of Medical Sciences, (AIIMS) Raipur, discussed the connection between frozen shoulder and diabetes. Also read | Shoulder pain: Causes and treatment

Frozen shoulder can be an early indicator of diabetes, and a simple blood sugar test can reveal underlying issues.(Shutterstock)

He shared a case study to illustrate the importance of body awareness and symptom observation in detecting major illnesses – and explained how a seemingly ordinary case of shoulder stiffness turned out to be an early warning sign for diabetes.

In the video he posted, Dr Chouhan shared that the patient initially sought treatment for severe frozen shoulder symptoms, including pain that disrupted sleep and difficulty with basic tasks like combing hair. However, the doctor realised the patient also exhibited other signs, such as frequent urination, excessive thirst, blurred vision, and tingling in the extremities, which are classic symptoms of diabetes.

What were the man’s symptoms?

Upon testing, Dr Chouhan revealed the patient was found to have severely elevated blood sugar levels, confirming a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, suggesting the shoulder problem was a secondary issue. In the video he posted, Dr Chouhan said in Hindi, “I am sharing with you a very interesting and useful piece of knowledge about how you can become aware of your body and detect serious illnesses in your body. A patient had come in with shoulder pain. The pain was so severe that it would wake them up at night. They could not lift their hands up. They had difficulty combing and buttoning. All these problems were present. Seeing this, we understood that they have the problem of frozen shoulder. Frozen shoulder means that the capsule of your shoulder gets jammed.”

He further said, “But along with this, the patient had other issues too. Such as frequent urination, frequent desire to drink water, slightly blurry vision, and tingling (numbness) in the hands and feet. So, all these symptoms are of diabetes. Meaning, people who have the disease of sugar (diabetes). When I got them tested for HbA1c and a sugar test, the levels were quite high. They had come to me for a shoulder ailment, but their main problem was diabetes mellitus, meaning the disease of sugar. The point is that retrospectively — by catching hold of a small symptom — we discovered a major illness. So, if you also have a shoulder problem, you can consider whether you might have diabetes.”

‘Body’s early whisper that diabetes had arrived’

Dr Chouhan added that 30 to 40 percent of frozen shoulder cases are associated with diabetes mellitus and advised people, especially those with pre-existing diabetes, to be proactive with shoulder exercises and diabetes management to prevent frozen shoulder.

“Furthermore, in 30 to 40 percent of cases of frozen shoulder, diabetes mellitus is certainly found. That means those who have diabetes mellitus may have the problem of a frozen shoulder, or those who have frozen shoulder may have the problem of diabetes. So, if you are already a sugar (diabetic) patient and taking medicine, you need to be extra careful that you do not develop frozen shoulder in your shoulder later. For this, you should do shoulder movements beforehand, take medicines, and control your diabetes (sugar) so that you can avoid a major problem in the coming time, which is frozen shoulder,” Dr Chouhan said.

He wrote in his caption: “A middle-aged patient walked into my clinic, complaining of shoulder stiffness and pain for months. He thought it was just ‘age catching up’. But something didn’t add up — the pain was out of proportion, and the shoulder had almost frozen. When I dug a little deeper and advised a simple blood sugar test, the results surprised him… and even him more than the pain — his sugar levels were sky high. That’s when it clicked: the frozen shoulder wasn’t just a shoulder problem — it was his body’s early whisper that diabetes had quietly arrived. Sometimes, our joints tell the story before the sugar does. If your shoulder suddenly becomes stiff and painful without injury — don’t ignore it. It might be your body’s way of warning you.”

Sky Nick Cave Novel Series ‘Bunny Munro’ With Matt Smith in LFF Focus

by jummy84 October 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Sky’s six-episode adaptation of the Nick Cave novel The Death of Bunny Munro, starring Doctor Who and House of the Dragon star Matt Smith, was in the BFI London Film Festival (LFF) spotlight on Monday.

Director Isabella Eklöf (Kalak, Holiday, Industry seasons 2 and 3), BAFTA-winning writer Pete Jackson (Somewhere Boy) and producer Ed Macdonald from Clerkenwell Films (Baby Reindeer, The End of the F***ing World) discussed the show during a panel entitled “From Book to Screen: The Death of Bunny Munro,” programmed in collaboration with the Edinburgh TV Festival and hosted by its creative director Rowan Woods.

Rafael Mathé plays the nine-year-old son, Bunny Junior. “Following his wife Libby’s death by suicide, sex addicted, door-to-door beauty product salesman and self-professed lothario Bunny Munro finds himself saddled with a young son and only a loose concept of parenting,” a synopsis for the series reads. “Together with Bunny Junior he embarks on an epic and increasingly out-of-control road trip across southern England as the two struggle to contain their grief in very different ways.”

Monday’s panel covered the optioning of the novel, its adaptation, the choice of director, casting and the visual approach to the story and the creative choices to bring the father-and-son relationship to the screen.

Eklöf was asked about the stylistic influences, sharing: “Ultimately, everything is instinct; everything is finding that angle where you are seeing the magic. But we did have some overarching principles.”

Some of them may be more obvious than others. “We talked about ‘70s cinema — [John] Cassavetes, [David] Lynch is an obvious reference,” she said. “There was a little bit of Natural Born Killers that you talked about for quite more specific reasons,” added Macdonald. “And then we talked about quite a load of different references. I remember Red Rocket came up. We talked about Apocalypse Now.” And he shared with a laugh that he may have even brought up Bad Santa.

Jackson told panel that he knew right away that adapting Cave’s novel would be a challenge. “My first thought was: ‘I’ve no idea how you do it.’ Great trepidation! I mean, there were floating vaginas on the first page. I love the book to bits.”

The writer continued: “I think what Nick does brilliantly and fearlessly is explore his darker impulses and his secret shames and his mad kind of desires. And in the creative team it was incumbent on us for the end result to be the same thing — to shock and to challenge and confront and also connect.”

Macdonald recalled that Cave has said his inspirations for the novel were a biblical text and the feminist SCUM (for: Society for Cutting Up Men) Manifesto.

How did the creative team avoid objectifying women the way Bunny does? Eklöf‘s answer was to objectify him instead. “Yeah, I really, very actively in my career went for the female gaze, because it’s a visual medium, so you cannot avoid to sexualize your characters,” she explained. “It’s intrinsic. Everyone’s gaze has sex in [it], but the way you make it equal is to objectify the men just as much.”

First published in 2009, Bunny Munro is Cave’s second novel after And the Ass Saw the Angel (1989). The singer is best known as the lead vocalist of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Bunny Munro will premiere on Sky on Nov. 20. Its first two episodes world premiere at LFF on Monday evening.

Momma Expand ‘Sky’ With Outtakes, Heatmiser Cover

by jummy84 October 2, 2025
written by jummy84

Ascendant rock quartet Momma are expanding their acclaimed latest Polyvinyl album, Welcome to My Blue Sky, on Nov. 14 with four outtakes and a cover of “Christian Brothers” by the late Elliott Smith’s pre-fame band Heatmiser. A head-nodding new single, “Cross Your Heart,” is out now in tandem with a video directed by Prophet Media’s Steph Rinzler.

“We actually were messing around with this one during soundchecks while we were still touring [the 2022 album] Household Name,” band members say of “Cross Your Heart.” “We always knew it had potential but we could never fully crack it, and this was one of the first songs we started working on in the writing process for Welcome to My Blue Sky. It’s about a forbidden romance and sneaking around with another person.”

Rinzler’s video finds band members Etta Friedman, Allegra Weingarten, Aron Kobayashi Ritch and Preston Fulks gallivanting around their adopted hometown of Brooklyn, N.Y. “I wanted to capture Momma in their own world, goofing around, stumbling into moments, and letting the night carry them,” she says. “What unfolds is less of a traditional music video and more of a time capsule of a night out. At its core, this project was about keeping the process as fun and unselfconscious as the band is in real life.”

Two of the other outtakes were recorded live with acoustic guitars (“that was the best way to give them justice,” band members say), while “Christian Brothers” was chosen because it’s a song Friedman and Weingarten “have been covering and playing live since high school.”

Momma begins a short European and U.K. tour Oct. 31 in Brussels and will then play their biggest New York show to date on Nov. 20 at the 1,800-capacity Brooklyn Steel. After their first visits to Japan and Australia early next year, the band will help anchor the Something in the Way festival alongside Sunny Day Real Estate, Explosions in the Sky and the Hotelier from Jan. 31-Feb. 1 in Boston.

David Byrne: Who Is the Sky? Album Review

David Byrne: Who Is the Sky? Album Review

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

David Byrne’s American Utopia, released in 2018 as a resistance manifesto and rallying cry during the first Trump administration, was as ambitious as its title. Beginning as a songwriting reunion with his old partner Brian Eno, the album ballooned into a Broadway production that was eventually captured on film by Spike Lee. Every iteration and star collaboration positioned American Utopia as a major statement, a reckoning with the distance between the illustrious promise of the United States and its benighted reality.

Arriving after all that commotion, Who Is the Sky? feels like a sigh of relief, an exhale after such a gargantuan endeavor. The two albums, so different in feel, derive from the same premise: Joy is precious in the 21st century, so it’s worth celebrating the reasons to be cheerful. That phrase, lifted from an old new-wave hit from Ian Dury & the Blockheads, is the name of Byrne’s ongoing cross-platform positivity project, a kind of Buzzfeed for relentless optimists. It wouldn’t be a stretch to consider What Is the Sky? an extension of that publication: These songs are designed to help get you through the day—vivid, colorful tunes that place a premium on human interaction. But an album is a different beast than a daily dose of motivation. The line between positivity and platitude is a fine one.

Byrne certainly sounds tirelessly exuberant on What Is the Sky?, thanks in part to the assist he receives from Ghost Train Orchestra, a freewheeling ensemble that’s no stranger to ambitious undertakings. Prior to teaming with Byrne, the collective released a tribute to visionary polymath Moondog, performed in collaboration with avant-classical veterans Kronos Quartet. If any group can navigate Byrne’s buoyant polyrhythms and sly stylistic shifts, it’s Ghost Train Orchestra. But Who Is the Sky? is not intended as high art: It’s designed to be a bustling pop album, so Byrne has brought in producer Kid Harpoon—a British musician who’s helped Harry Styles and Miley Cyrus take home Grammys—to supply the requisite pizzazz.

Don’t take Kid Harpoon’s presence, or the cameo from Paramore’s Hayley Williams on the galloping “What Is the Reason for It?,” as a sign that Byrne is tempering his eccentricities in hopes of reaching a broader audience. Kid Harpoon’s sparkling production gives Byrne the freedom to live loud, pushing his eccentricities to the extreme, a shift that’s evident the moment “Everybody Laughs” launches the album on a note of aggressive happiness. Yelping a laundry list of banal universals (“Everybody laughs and everybody cries/Everybody lives and everybody dies”), Byrne sounds like an over-caffeinated busker desperate to get passersby to join the party. His zeal steamrolls any hint of the darker side of human nature (“Everybody knows what everybody does”), as does the zest of Ghost Train Orchestra: They’re all clashing primary colors.

bitchy | Sky: Prince William & ‘wingman’ Harry could still be such a ‘powerful team’

by jummy84 September 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Prince William and Kate’s post-Harry-visit vacation is going to hit like crack next week. In the past seven days, we’ve seen more of William and Kate than we have at any point in the year. It’s wild that no one is calling them out on it, right? That none of the royal commentators will actually say the words “William and Kate are desperate for attention and they’re clout-chasing Prince Harry during his four-day visit.” What the royal reporters will say and write is pretty funny though. Take, for example, Sky News’ Rhiannon Mills, who wrote an “analysis” piece: “William and Harry show separate commitment to shared causes – it shows what a powerful team they could be.” Sob, why didn’t Harry divorce his wife and come back to do all of William’s work? They could have been a TEAM!!

This industrial estate in Nottingham was certainly not the glamour of California. But Prince Harry could not have seemed more at home during his trip back, which was ultimately to see friends. Ever since he left for America, he’s stayed in touch privately with community groups that do the vital work of trying to keep young people out of trouble and tackle youth violence. They have been discreet about his contact, and loyal to him.

So now it felt like he was paying them back – with a huge million-pound donation from his own pocket, not from his charitable foundation. That’s particularly interesting because we don’t usually get told the amounts royals donate. But also when there’s been so much chat about Harry and his money since he left the comfort of the Royal Family.

It also seems to show a firm commitment to the UK that we’ve not physically seen from him in a while. Is this the half-in, half-out royal life that he always wanted? Other family members don’t have a choice, of course.

In London, Prince William was making a similar type of visit to an event in Lambeth focused on what his homelessness initiative, Homewards, is trying to do more specifically for young people.

I was once told by a palace insider that Harry would be William’s wingman when he became king. Their ongoing commitment to the same issues shows how much they could still be a powerful team if they could patch things up.

As I watched Harry walk out of the recording studios, there was a serious feeling of deja vu. This had felt so similar to engagements I’d done with him on this very spot in the past, and that is hard to square with what’s happened over the last five years.

We thought he was leaving, but instead, he hopped over a small wall to chat and take photos with the crowd, despite his security team trying to guide him to the car. Will there be any other unexpected sights over the next two days? We’ll have to wait and see.

[From Sky News]

“We thought he was leaving, but instead, he hopped over a small wall to chat and take photos with the crowd…” That’s something William can’t do… because there are rarely crowds waiting to see him. This is all so pitiful from everyone involved in the UK – William’s half-assed, last-minute busywork to “compete” with Harry, royal reporters mocking Harry’s charitable donation, royal reporters wistfully dreaming of Harry coming back to be William’s “wingman,” since they know William isn’t up to the job, nor does William have any charisma, work ethic or charm. It’s been so many years, and there’s still this refusal from the Windsors, the press and the royalists to acknowledge their massive role in everything that happened. None of them can say “actually, we should have treated Harry and Meghan better, then they would have stayed.”

Who Is the Sky? is Byrne’s first full-length effort since 2018’s highly regarded American Utopia. The new album was produced by Grammy winner Kid Harpoon, with all 12 songs arranged by members of New York-based chamber ensemble, Ghost Train Orchestra. The LP arrives with a slew of guest appearances from the likes of Paramore’s Hayley Williams, St. Vincent, The Smile and Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, and American Utopia percussionist Mauro Refosco.

“At my age, at least for me, there’s a ‘don’t give a shit about what people think’ attitude that kicks in,” Byrne said about his new work in a press statement. “I can step outside my comfort zone with the knowledge that I kind of know who I am by now and sort of know what I’m doing. That said, every new set of songs, every song even, is a new adventure.”

Byrne will celebrate the new release with a multi-leg world tour, which kicks off later this month on September 14th in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After covering North America, the show will head over to Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, wrapping up March 2026 with a two-night stand in Paris. The new shows will feature a band of 13 musicians, singers and dancers, including some members of the American Utopia band. Like that tour, everyone on stage will be fully mobile. See the complete itinerary below, and get tickets here.

The singer released a trio of singles leading up to the release of the new album: “Everybody Laughs,” “She Explains Things to Me,” and ““The Avant Garde.” Just last night, he previewed a fourth song, “What Is the Reason for It,” with a live band performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. During the interview with Fallon, he revealed how an autocorrected text helped name his new album.

The world tour will cap an eventful year for the former Talking Heads frontman, which includes getting married to his partner, Mala Gaonka, the same week as the release of Who Is the Sky? Byrne marked the special occasion by sharing the mostly instrumental wedding playlist that spans 42 songs and two-and-a-half hours.

This summer saw Byrne join Olivia Rodrigo at the Governors Ball festival for a surprise performance of Talking Heads’ classic, “Burning Down the House,” complete with synchronized choreography.

In February of this year, he joined Robyn at SNL’s 50th anniversary concert to perform her song, “Dancing on My Own,” as well as Talking Heads’ 1983 single, “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody).”

David Byrne Laughs at the Weirdness of Life on ‘Who Is the Sky?’

By now, fans see David Byrne as more than a quirky dude in a beloved legacy rock act. He’s a plainspoken public intellectual; an advocate for civic improvement and multi-cultural cooperation; a neurodiverse poet of the modern condition; an artistic éminence grise with fingers on multiple cultural pulses. In some ways, as the multi-format American Utopia project showed, a sort of non-denominational minister, with a goofy sense of humor, who one might look to for guidance, hope, encouragement and words of wisdom when things get scary.

Well, things are pretty scary right now, and on his first album of original songs since before the pandemic, Byrne is … writing musical comedy. “I met the Buddha at a downtown party,” he announces on the bouncy song of the same name; “he was hangin’ by the pastries and the canapés/Just stuffing himself like there was no tomorrow/With a beatific smile all over his face.” When the singer expresses concern, the deity schools him: “‘I’ve had to retire from that enlightenment biz/I don’t have the answers, and I never did/They think I can help them, but I’m not that smart/ so here, have a piece of this blue blueberry tart!’”

In “The Avant Garde,” the art school student-turned-pop singer acts out an aesthetic crisis over an intermittently jerky groove, rhyming “I saw a woman in a leotard” with “I’m not sure how I feel ‘bout the avant garde,” and positing “it doesn’t mean shit” in the chorus. On “Moisturizing Thing,” over cheeky string arrangements, his sweetheart says: “‘Hey David, put this on your skin/It says it’s anti-aging, anti-oxidant too/ go ahead, try it/Let’s see what it can do.’” Lo and behold, it transforms the singer into an apparent toddler. “My honey wakes up, she looks over and screams,” he recounts; “that lotion is magic, I look like I’m three.”

The storytelling style isn’t off-brand for a polymath who’s been making stage musicals for two decades, longer if you count Eighties collaborations with Twyla Tharpe (The Catherine Wheel) and the late Robert Wilson (Music for “The Knee Plays”). There’s also evident connection here with Byrne’s recent interactive Theater of the Mind project, and a rap sheet of role-play songwriting that stretches back to “Psycho Killer” and “Life During Wartime.”

Editor’s picks

What made those songs work, and these, is the sound of Byrne’s mind cogitating inside them. Memoir seems to flicker through Who Is The Sky? — whose title, Byrne cops, comes from an AI voice transcription error of the phrase “who is this guy?” Worries over aging, about people sweating you for your creative choices, or hoping for words of wisdom to decode the world’s madness, seem like triggers Byrne might well have. And tbh, it’s refreshing, and hilarious, to hear Byrne sounding downright bitchy on “The Avant Garde,” since dude rarely dials things up past pointedly wry (not to mention having a CV full of his own mea culpas).

There’s evident memoir, too, in the album’s love songs, considering Byrne’s imminent marriage to the writer/hedge-fund founder Mala Gaonkar, a fellow polymath (NB: his wedding dinner playlist is definitely worth a listen). On “What is the Reason For It?,” Byrne overthinks the phenomenon of love atop mariachi-brass abstracts with a charming assist from Paramore’s Hayley Williams, the latest of his 21st -century-pop sidekicks — see also Robyn, Olivia Rodrigo and St. Vincent’s Annie Clark, a veteran Byrne collaborator who turns up here on “Ev’rybody Laughs,” the LP’s lead single and default mission statement. “She Explains Things To Me” is another love song, of sorts. It’s the record’s most touching and vulnerable moment, an expression of gratitude, with faintly comic frustration, for someone who enlarges your perspective, mansplaining re-imagined as man-listening.

Trending Stories

Musically, Byrne taps into modern-ish pop strategies via Harry Styles producer Kid Harpoon. But being Byrne, he’s also enlisted the New York-based Ghost Train Orchestra, a chamber ensemble known for their interpretations of the late composer/street musician Moondog, and jazz-rock drummer Tom Skinner of Radiohead side-band, the Smile. If Byrne’s approach recalls that of Colors, Beck’s 2017 pop turn with Greg Kurstin, the touch here is lighter, with the multicultural rhythmic and melodic surprises that always brighten Byrne’s solo work.

The risk with humor in songs, of course, is that jokes wear thin. But laughing’s pleasurable and undeniably therapeutic; it may even be a pop music trend (ie: Laufey’s salty punchlines, laugh-advocate Laraaji’s contributions to the new Big Thief album). Either way, Who Is The Sky? is an compelling invitation, like the one Byrne offered on the Talking Heads signature “Road to Nowhere” — beautifully covered by Brazilian expat Rogê on a forthcoming Heads tribute LP, it should be noted — to join him on what’s looking like a long ride into who knows what, singing and laughing as needed.
