6 Women-Centric Films That Powerfully Showcase The Strength Of Female-Led Cinema

The nationwide momentum around HAQ has officially positioned the film as one of the year’s most significant social-justice successes both critically and commercially. With its continued performance and cultural traction, HAQ demonstrates that women-led, rights-focused narratives are culturally urgent. Produced by Junglee Pictures, in association with Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios, HAQ extends the studio’s long-standing commitment to socially impactful storytelling. Starring Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi, the film’s gripping courtroom narrative has struck a nationwide chord, igniting conversations across audience segments, media circles, and policy spaces alike. The film is directed by Suparn S Varma and written by Reshu Nath. HAQ now enters the landscape shaped by women-centred successes and films that proved that authentic, grounded stories can deliver both emotional resonance and broad commercial reach.

6 Women-Centric Films That Powerfully Showcase The Strength Of Female-Led Cinema

Laapataa Ladies

This film uses humane humour and gentle satire to tell the story of two young brides who get accidentally swapped on a train. It subtly and powerfully champions female agency and identity by exploring the lives of women who have once been lost, find an unexpected opportunity for self-discovery outside the confines of patriarchy.

Jigra

This film centres around the fierce, protective bond between a sister and her younger brother. The plot is driven by the sister’s dangerous and unwavering resolve to rescue her brother when he is wrongfully imprisoned and sentenced to death in a foreign country with strict laws. It highlights the lengths a woman will go to for her family.

Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway

This film is based on a true story about an Indian mother whose children are taken away by the Norwegian Child Welfare Services due to cultural differences in parenting. It is a powerful narrative of a mother’s relentless, global fight against a foreign system to reclaim her children, highlighting the trauma of cultural alienation and bureaucratic insensitivity.

Panga

A heartwarming sports drama centred on a former Kabaddi world champion, now a loving wife and mother, who decides to stage a comeback to the sport years after retiring. The film celebrates a woman’s ambition, identity, and the importance of a supportive family that enables her to chase her deferred dreams.

Thappad

A cultural milestone that confronts the normalisation of domestic violence, even in its most subtle forms. The film follows a seemingly happy homemaker whose world shatters when her ambitious husband slaps her publicly at a party. Her decision to seek a divorce forces her family and the audience to question the fundamental nature of respect and equality within a marriage. It confronted normalised violence and sparked debate nationwide.

Haq

A courtroom drama inspired by the landmark 1985 judgment of the Supreme Court. The film talks about a woman who seeks justice for herself and her 3 children. When her husband divorces her and stops paying maintenance, it leads to a legal battle that explores women’s rights within personal faith, social customs, and civil law.

With HAQ, Junglee Pictures adds yet another title to its catalogue of high-impact cinema. The studio’s dedication to socially relevant narratives like Raazi, Badhai Ho, and Badhai Do finds renewed validation as the film’s commercial and cultural traction continue to grow.

As its theatrical run continues to build momentum, HAQ stands tall as a defining victory for socially fearless storytelling and ignites the bigger conversations on the Uniform Civil Code. The need for establishing one law for all religions so that justice is served equally to all. It doesn’t just join the country’s growing wave of robust, justice-driven cinema; it raises the stakes and sets a new benchmark for what women-led narratives can achieve at the Indian box office.

The singer also recounted going to see Justin Bieber when she was growing up and creating a chant in hopes of going backstage

Addison Rae stopped by The Tonight Show to perform a medley of “Diet Pepsi” and “New York.”

The pop singer took the late-night show’s stage in gold gown, offering an ethereal take on “Diet Pepsi,” the hit single she dropped last August. She then danced across the floor to a segment of “New York” before climbing onto host Jimmy Fallon‘s desk.

Rae also sat down with Fallon to discuss her debut album, Addison, and celebrating her 25th birthday. “I actually love aging,” she said. “I think aging is amazing. I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, everything just feels like it matters much less when you get older. Yeah, actually, anything goes.’ As long as I’m surviving, I’m good.”

The singer recalled going to see a Justin Bieber concert on one of her birthdays when she was growing up. “Just seeing him on stage, I was dying,” she said. “But also just like, ‘Wow, one day that’ll be me up there in the levitating heart.’” She added that she created a chant with her cousins to get Bieber’s attention: “We’ve got Bieber fever. It’s 102. And the only way to cure it is to go backstage with you.” She noted, “It didn’t work. Epic fail.”

Rae released Addison in June. The album came a year after she first began teasing new music. Last June, she posted a video of her underwater as the then-unreleased track “Aquamarine” played over it. Lead single “Diet Pepsi” was dropped in August, with “Aquamarine” officially arriving a couple months later. Ahead of the album, she unveiled five total songs off the LP, all with their own videos.

The singer recently appeared in the trailer for Ryan Murphy’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story, playing one of the infamous murderer’s alleged victims. Premiering on Netflix today, The Ed Gein Story is the third installment of Murphy and Ian Brennan’s true crime anthology series, following seasons on Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez Brothers. Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam will star as Gein and Laurie Metcalf will portray his mother, with whom Gein shared a strangely close relationship. Rae is billed as playing Evelyn Hartley, a teen girl who went missing in 1953.

The annual Westminster Venue Collection showcase last night welcomed over 100 event planners and industry professionals to Central Hall Westminster for an invaluable evening of venue finding and networking. The exclusive event saw the host venue’s latest re-developed space: ‘The Wesley Suite’, transformed into a winter wonderland where guests explored over 50 of London’s most prestigious venues.

Westminster Venue Collection’s sought-after portfolio includes fashionable townhouses, private members’ clubs, luxury hotels, iconic attractions and historic institutes, offering organisers an extensive range of options for corporate and private events. Having launched its re-developed website in March 2025, with advanced features simplifying venue search, shortlisting and enquiries, the showcase further supports planners in their research with venue discovery and matchmaking.

On arrival, guests were welcomed into Central Hall’s brand-new space in which Boo Productions had created a serene, enchanting world where winter came to life. Decorative elements including a frosted twig entrance arch, a beautiful table centre display and cascading chandelier feature, set the tone for a magical experience. The stage featured a bespoke Arctic theme, with a custom-made lectern inspired by frozen landscapes, while a scenic landscape backdrop framed the presentation area. A white winter sleigh photo opportunity provided a memorable moment throughout the evening.

While meeting the collection’s member venues and exploring the history, heritage and versatility the City of Westminster offers as a destination for hosting world-class events, attendees enjoyed a delicious selection of canapés and bowl food from Central Hall’s in-house catering partner, Green & Fortune. Highlights from their new, sustainably-sourced menu collection launching in January, included Aged Corney side Beef tartare with egg yolk emulsion and Slow cooked beef cheek, Peela pilau rice, saffron yogurt, white onion salad – both featuring beef from Green & Fortune’s own farm. Cauliflower salad with chilled puree, smoked Applewood panko, golden raisin and shallot vinaigrette, and Avocado cream, blackened chalk stream trout with foraged confetti and burnt lemon honey were other popular dishes.

The evening also featured games and entertainment from Clownfish Events, which were tailored to the event theme and designed to engage the guests with fun interactive elements. The host venue’s in-house AV partner, White Light, ensured seamless technical delivery, with installed lighting, video and audio to enhance the space. Exciting prizes donated by the members, including luxury afternoon tea experiences, an overnight stay at The Guardsman Hotel and Tate Britain exhibition tickets were won by lucky guests.

Westminster Venue Collection Chair Barbara Wutte says: “Every year, our guests remind us how important our annual showcase is for giving them unrivalled access to such a diverse selection of venues under one roof. This year’s White Winter Wonderland theme perfectly demonstrated the creative possibilities available within our ever-growing portfolio. We were thrilled to host this year’s event in Westminster’s newest space, giving guests a first look at ‘The Wesley Suite’, as well as the opportunity to simplify their venue finding and meet their event needs by connecting with all our members in one fantastic night.”

The Westminster Venue Collection 2025 Showcase was kindly supported by partners Central Hall Westminster, Green & Fortune, White Light, Boo Productions, Clownfish Events, Hire It and Andrew Lunn Photography.
