“It took 7 days to create the world, it only took one to disrupt its balance.” And let’s be honest – it’s all our fault. This mesmerizing animated short film is entirely worth a watch, especially if you love this planet and all the plants & animals on it. On the 8th Day is an 8 minute animated short film created by 5 students at the acclaimed Piktura animation school in France. The original French title is Au 8ème Jour and it was finished in 2023 – but it has been playing at film festivals and other events around the world for the pat 2 years. Now it’s online for everyone to enjoy thanks to Short of the Week. This is created with 3D animation but it has the same look & style of stop-motion animation, specifically felt & cloth & yarn animation usually made by hand. The short is an eco fable visualizing our interconnected world and the link between all living creatures on planet Earth. The pieces of yarn connect everything and everyone. Until darkness starts taking over… It’s a beautiful creation and the animals are so cute. Bravo to the team for crafting this stunning film.

Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip on this one. Intro via YouTube: “It took 7 days to create the world, it only took one to disrupt its balance. This award-winning 3D animation mimics hand-crafted stop-motion to tell an environmentalist parable about the interconnectedness of all life. What elevates it is the remarkable polish of its execution, the genuine emotion it stirs, and an apocalyptic sense of scale and foreboding that feels attuned to the current moment.” On the 8th Day is an animated short film created by students at the acclaimed Piktura animation school based in Roubaix, France. You can find out more about the school on their official site. This was made by Agathe Sénéchal, Alicia Massez, Elise Debruyne, Flavie Carin, Théo Duhautois. Originally completed in 2023. Produced by Carlos De Carvalho. With original music by Thomas Peyrounette with Adèle Chavy on the violin. View the making of video here. For info on the film, visit SOTW or the film’s main page. Let them fight? Why not. Along with the awesome new Predator: Badlands movie hitting theaters this week, there’s an awesome new fan-made short film to enjoy as well. Predator: Fire and Stone is a quick 3-1/2 minute animated sci-fi action short made by a collection of young filmmakers – going under a series of online handles: Bauan Edits, Mr. Vega, and Fuzzeke on the music. The short is also inspired by a comic book series from a few years ago also called Predator: Fire and Stone, featuring this storyline crossover between two sci-fi creations: Prometheus and Predator. The short film features a fight scene between an Engineer humanoid from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (2012) movie who ends up attacked by a Predator Yautja. There’s not much more to the showdown than this. I guess it’s a riff on thinking these Engineer creatures would be formidable, but of course Predators always win any fight. Glad this was made by people not AI. Check it out.

Predator: Fire and Stone Short Film

Thanks to Bauan Edits on Twitter for the tip on this new short. Very brief synopsis from YouTube: “An epic encounter between a Predator and an Engineer.” Inspired by the iconic Dark Horse Comics event “Fire and Stone” from 2015, written by Joshua Williamson with art by Christopher Mooneyham and inspired by the animation style seen in Predator: Killer of Killers, directed by Dan Trachtenberg and co-directed by Josh Wassung. Predator: Fire and Stone is a short film created and directed by young filmmaker “Mr. Vega” aka Luis B. Vega from Lima, Peru – you can view more of his work on his YouTube page for follow him on IG @mrvegaofficial. He primarily uses Blender. Featuring an original score by “Fuzzeke” (@fuzzeke). With mocap and sound design by YouTube creator Bauan Edits (@bauanedits). And 3D animation by Mr. Vega. Posted on their YouTube – for more info click there. Janus Films Acquires Nathan Silver’s Carol Kane Doc Short Carol & Joy

by jummy84 November 4, 2025
written by jummy84

Janus Films has acquired all U.S. rights to “Carol & Joy,” a vérité documentary short featuring Oscar-nominated actress Carol Kane and her 98-year-old mother, Joy.

The film — directed by Nathan Silver (“Between the Temples”) — had its world premiere at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival and continued its fall festival run at the New York Film Festival, Hamptons International Film Festival and Woodstock Film Festival. It had its international premiere at the Viennale.

“Carol & Joy” will now debut exclusively on the Criterion Channel on Dec. 1, 2025. Janus will be supporting the film’s efforts for best documentary short category at the 2026 Academy Awards.

On New York’s Upper West Side, Kane lives with her 98-year-old mother Joy, an active music teacher, former dancer, and lifelong Francophile. In this intimate short vérité documentary shot on 16mm, the filmmaking team behind the acclaimed “Between the Temples” —  for which Kane was recently nominated for a Spirit Award — visit the pair in their home for an afternoon of music and friends and stories.

The film is produced by Jamie Gonçalves (“Predators, “Dos estaciones”), C. Mason Wells (“Between the Temples,” “Thirst Street”), Dweck Productions’ Hannah Dweck and Theodore Schaefer (“Maddie’s Secret,” “The Adults”), and Brian Liebman (“Brats,” “The Featherweight”). Executive producers include Natalie Portman and Sophie Mas’ MountainA (“May December,” “Arco”) and Diane Lanyi (“Between the Temples”). The film was shot in the tradition of legendary cinema vérité makers Albert and David Maysles by Sean Price Williams (“Good Time,” “The Sweet East”) and Hunter Zimny (“Funny Pages”).

“We filmed Carol & Joy on 16mm in a single New York City apartment, using an observational and conversational style indebted to our verite nonfiction heroes from the ‘60s and ‘70s,” said Silver. “I think every one of the documentaries that inspired us is — of course! — in the Janus Films library and streaming on the Criterion Channel. It’s an unbelievable honor for our film to be welcomed to live alongside these greats in the same beautiful building.”

Kane’s career has spanned five decades. She was nominated for best actress at the Academy Awards for “Hester Street,” won two Emmy Awards and earned a Golden Globe nomination for her work on the television series “Taxi,” and garnered an Emmy nomination for “Chicago Hope.” She was also a series regular on the Netflix series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “Hunters.”

“Between the Temples, which world premiered in competition at the Sundance Film Festival, was released by Sony Pictures Classics in 2024. The film was nominated for Best Screenplay at the Gotham Awards and won Kane the New York Film Critics Circle Award for best supporting actress.

Janus Films recently announced the acquisitions of Sophy Romvari’s acclaimed debut feature “Blue Heron,” Carla Simon’s 2025 Cannes selections “Romeria,” auteur Lav Diaz’s latest “Magellan,” the Cannes award-winning “Resurrection” from director Bi Gan, Hlynur Pálmason’s “The Love That Remains,” Sergei Loznitsa’s acclaimed “Two Prosecutors,” and Ira Sachs’ Sundance and New York Film Festival selection “Peter Hujar’s Day.”

“Just holy steady, Sonny… Entry is looking beautiful.” This is how you do it! Make something for nothing and impress everyone! Reentry is a fantastic 1-minute long short (well, 80 seconds to be precise) made by filmmaker Scott Jeschke. We’ve featured his shorts before (Mimic) this is also worth a watch. It debuted on Twittter and is now available on YouTube in HD (view below). The short is an experiment in showing just how much storytelling you can pull off in 1 minute and how it’s ALL made by Scott, without any AI, or crew, or extra money, or anything. “I retaught myself basic VFX compositing in After Effects, and put many hours into making this a fully-human-made piece that I could be proud of,” he explains. An astronaut experiences an intense reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. But there’s also a very clever sci-fi nod at the end. Click on play.

Reentry Short Film

Thanks to Twitter for the tip on this film going around. Very brief synopsis via YouTube: “Plunging through reentry, a lone astronaut clings to fragments of another life.” Reentry is a one-minute short film created and directed by filmmaker Scott Jeschke – you can view more of his work on his official website or visit his YT page or follow him on Twitter @ScottJeschke or on IG @scottjeschkefilm. He’s currently based in Raleigh, NC and has made other shorts including the submarine short Mimic in 2021. Reentry was created entirely by Scott: “[It was] made in my garage with no budget, no crew, and NO AI. I retaught myself basic VFX compositing in After Effects, and put many hours into making this a fully-human-made piece that I could be proud of.” For more info on the film, visit YouTube. Fun Trailer for Jason Kelce’s ‘Thermal Buzz’ Predator-Inspired Short

by Alex Billington
October 29, 2025

“A lot of Predators in this jungle…” 20th Century Studios & Garage Beer have unveiled a trailer for a new sci-fi short film called Thermal Buzz, a marketing riff on the original Predator movie. Even though this is essentially just a big promo for the Garage Beer brand (is the beer any good??), in partnership with former football player / current podcaster Jason Kelce, it’s actually produced & created in collaboration with 20th Century Studios to help also promote the release of Predator: Badlands. Thermal Buzz is an homage to the original 1987 Predator movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger & Carl Weathers. It drops online via the Garage Beer channels this weekend – one week before the full release of Dan Trachtneberg’s Predator: Badlands. Thermal Buzz stars Jason Kelce, pro-wrestler Matt Cardona, & former Philly Eagles player Beau Allen. This looks amusing enough, but I’d rather see other filmmakers making actual short film spin-offs instead.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Jordan Phoenix’s short film Thermal Buzz, direct from YouTube:

Thermal Buzz Short Film

Thermal Buzz Short Film

The film follows two men who face off against Predators in the jungle while enjoying some refreshing beer. In collaboration with 20th Century Studios and the release of Predator: Badlands, Garage Beer and Jason Kelce are back on the screen with Thermal Buzz, a homage to the original 1987 Predator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Thermal Buzz is directed by filmmaker Jordan Phoenix, of the other Brewmite short films previously. Created and produced by Garage Beer as a promotional stunt – in collaboration with the release of Predator: Badlands. The Thermal Buzz short debuts on Garage Beer’s social channels starting on October 31st, 2025. 20th Century will also release Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator: Badlands movie in theaters (huzzah!!) nationwide starting on November 7th, 2025 coming up soon. Who’s ready to watch?

To battle they go! Omeleto debuted a fun 6-minute film called Forever, an animated short about seemingly friendly garden gnomes going to war. The short is made by a group of students from ENSI (École Nationale Supérieure d’Ingénieurs) in France and was debuted recently at the MyMetaStories festival. The only actual synopsis: “Garden gnomes battle an enemy.” It’s about a group of gnomes who realize they must fight back when a golf ball from a nearby golf course destroys one of their ranks. “This rambunctious animated short turns the seemingly whimsical subject – the quiet lives of garden gnomes – into a surprisingly suspenseful battle over life & dominion, told with thriller-like tension, robust humor and terrific energy.” Presented by UniFrance. With a score by Jérémie Esperet. No voices as it is a dialogue-free journey into a golf course battle-zone. There have been a bunch of animated movies about gnomes already: Gnomeo & Juliet (2011), Gnome Alone (2017), & Sherlock Gnomes (2018). Though I’d say this short is better than nearly all of those.

Forever Animated Short Film

Thanks to GeekTyrant for the tip on this short film. Extended intro from YouTube: “The story begins in a cheerful and peaceful backyard garden, where brightly painted gnomes stand proudly among flowers and trimmed grass in quirky poses and scenarios. Bathed in sunlight and silence, their existence is static yet content. But their serene existence is disrupted when a golf ball arcs over a fence and lands among them, damaging one of their numbers beyond repair. More balls soon land, cracking statues, scattering fragments, shattering the calm, and so the gnomes must band together to battle their unseen, nebulous yet powerful adversary.” Forever is a fun short film directed by a team of filmmakers: Theo Djekou, Pierre Ferrari, Cyrine Jouini, Pauline Philippart, & Anissa Terrier. Created at France’s École Nationale Supérieure d’Ingénieurs. Debuted by Omeleto in partnership with Unifrance and its MyMetaStories festival. For more info, visit the film’s YouTube page. Sydney Sweeney Unveils A Short Bleached Bob

Sydney Sweeney Unveils A Short Bleached Bob

by jummy84 October 26, 2025
written by jummy84

Tonight, Sydney Sweeney continues her press run for her upcoming biopic, Christy, with a premiere in Los Angeles. In honor of the exciting moment, the star chose to do something drastic—chop and dye her waist-skimming locks. Of course, her go-to hair team, colorist Jacob Schwartz and hairstylist Glen Coco, were on hand for the transformation.

“Sydney was looking for a change and wanted to have a big hair moment for the red carpet to support her new movie, Christy,” says Schwartz, who worked with Schwarzkopf Professional products to do the color transformation in a single day. “It felt like the perfect time to do something bold.”

And bold it was. Schwartz described Sweeney’s hair as a “dark suede blonde”—natural and rooty. This look is much more monochromatic and overall a much brighter blonde than before. “It’s more of an icy blonde,” Schwartz adds. “The color really makes her eyes and features pop and complements the cut so well.”

In the film, Sweeney’s character goes through her own hair transformations, including a brunette curly mullet, a shaggy pixie, and blonde box braids. But when it comes to real life, Sweeney chose to join Team Bob (other fans include Zoe Kravitz and Pamela Anderson).

“This is a transformation,” Coco says of the blunt, chin-skimming haircut, adding that it’s the shortest that her hair has ever been. “Christy has a lot of underlying tones of resilience, transformation, and power. Sydney herself transformed herself for this role, and I wanted to morph her into this updated version of herself in real life. Something new and fresh to close out the rest of the year.”

Ahahaha someone finally found a fun way to make fun of standing ovation clocks at film festivals. One of the dumbest film journalism trends of this day & age is the way someone will literally count the minutes during a standing ovation at the end of a film’s world premiere at major film festivals including Cannes & Venice. I even wrote an article once how entirely pointless & stupid this trend is, and how standing ovations actually mean nothing, and they usually happen because audiences are obsessed with celebrities (it’s objectively not a measure of the quality of the film or anything besides who is in the audience / why aren’t they leaving). This funny short called Ovation is a riff on this trend, featuring actor Luke Barnett during his Cannes Film Festival premiere of the film The Last Saint of Inishberry (entirely made up). It’s also a satirical answer to the question: what do these actors do during a 20 min standing ovation? Well, watch and find out.

Ovation Short Film

Thanks to Luke on Twitter for the tip on this debuting online. Brief intro via YouTube: “An actor’s journey through a never-ending standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival.” Ovation is a short directed by Los Angeles-based filmmaker Noam Kroll – he runs a filmmaking community website and provides advice – he also has a “commercial production house called ‘Creative Rebellion'”, and runs a filmmaking blog to inspire others. Follow him on Twitter @noamkroll or on IG @noamkroll or visit his YouTube page or Vimeo page. Written and performed by Luke Barnett (also of the acclaimed short The Crossing Over Express). With cinematography by Andy Chinn. Produced by Luke Barnett & Noam Kroll. For more info on this film, visit YouTube or read the article on Variety. “What are the odds of that, right? We deeply apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused.” Wow. Another remarkably clever, ingeniously shot new short film from filmmaker Jon Walkup. After recently premiering at a film festival, the 5-minute short is now available online to watch below. A Minute on Each Side is about James making a microwave burrito for dinner. But there is a bit more to it than that… Here’s the intro: A man’s life falls apart in the time it takes to microwave a burrito. Starring Jake Lewis as James, and director Jon Walkup as the voice on the other end of the phone. It’s also the winner of an Audience Award from the 2025 Nashville Film Festival. Walkup also produced a few other worth watching shorts The Cowboy & The Samurai and Such Good Friends which we’ve featured, and he directed Big Fun. He’s getting better and better with every new film he makes. And this is another impressive dark comedy – watch below.

A Minute on Each Side - Short Film

Thanks to Jon for the tip on this film debuting online. Brief intro via YouTube: “In this comedy-thriller, a man’s life falls apart in real time while a frozen burrito cooks in the microwave. Shot in a single five-minute take from inside the microwave, the film turns an everyday convenience into a front-row seat to a personal nightmare.” A Minute on Each Side is directed by up-and-coming indie filmmaker Jon Walkup, director of many other short films & music videos (producer on The Cowboy & The Samurai, Such Good Friends), as well as his first feature Big Fun a few years ago. You can also follow him on IG @jonwalkup. Written by Jon Walkup & Bri Klaproth. Produced by Bri Klaproth, Rachel Rambaldi, Jon Walkup. With cinematography by Cooper Shine. This just premiered at the 2025 Nashville Film Festival in their “Graveyard Shorts” section. For more info on the film, visit YouTube. To enjoy more shorts (including animation), click here. 10 Best Petite Leggings for Short Women 2025, Tested and Reviewed

by jummy84 September 30, 2025
written by jummy84

The best petite leggings in my closet are the ones I reach for the most. They never drag or scrunch at my ankles, and most importantly, I always feel confident wearing them. As a shopping editor, I’ve tested over a dozen activewear brands over the years and written about some of my favorite women’s leggings. And since I’m 5-feet-2, I frequently run into pairs that are way too long on my ankles, have too-long inseams, or feature awkward waistband lengths. So to help you find the most petite-friendly pairs, I tested options designed for shorter frames, like 7/8-length and capri leggings. I’m a pretty active person, so you can trust these pairs will really hold up on runs, through workout classes, or just while lounging at home.

Lululemon Align No Line High-Ride Pants, 25”

Everyone needs a good pair of black leggings in their closet, and that’s what these Lululemon tights are for me. My fellow editors love their durability (it never pills or shrinks after multiple washes) and that famously soft, stretchy fabric. I picked this pair as the best option for petites overall because of the length and inseam options; you can get 23-, 25-, 28-, and 31-inch lengths, which is great for women of different heights. (The 23-inch size is the shortest I’ve seen compared to other brands.) I love that they’re versatile for any activity, whether it’s working out intensely or walking around my neighborhood. Dress this pair up for fall and winter with a puffer vest or a zip-up jacket for a sporty vibe—or go with a cropped trench coat and ballet flats for a more elevated look.

Pros: Soft, stretchy fabric; two unique petite crops available
Cons: Pricey

Athleta Elation Ultra-High-Rise Double Up Leggings

Original video by Jenifer Calle testing Athleta Elation Ultra High Rise Double Up Legging

I’ve recommended this pair of high-waisted leggings time and time again because they’re just that good. I’ve worn them for just about everything, from reformer Pilates classes to lounging at home. I particularly like them for hot Pilates mat classes because they don’t feel sticky, even after I’ve been moving for close to an hour. The design is firm in the all the right places, but I’m able to stretch and slip in and out of this pair without hassle. They’re comfortable enough for all-day wear, and I’m obsessed with the flattering high-rise fit. Athleta also offers regular and tall inseams, so you can get a more customized fit for your height.

Pros: Great for hot, sweaty workouts; flattering high rise; soft but supportive fabric
Cons: Some transparency

FP Movement Never Better 7/8-Length Leggings

Original video from Jenifer Calle testing Free People Never Better 7/8 Length Legging

Some leggings squeeze my gut too much, and you definitely don’t want that when you’re doing lunges or entering downward-facing dog. That’s why these FP Movement leggings are great for, well, movement. Plus, they’re some of the softest pairs of leggings I own. In addition to yoga classes, I recommend these leggings for nature walks, low-impact workouts like barre, and long-distance walks. The 7/8 length and the 24.5-inch inseam make these the perfect height for petite women. Plus, the unique colors are great for standing out at the gym or mixing into your capsule wardrobe; throw on an oversized hoodie or a denim jacket for an easy off-duty outfit.
