We Can Tell You How to Get to Sesame Street—and More Secrets

‘Sesame Street’ Addresses Hacker Sharing “Disgusting” Posts on Elmo’s Account

Guess what? We can finally tell you how to get, how to get to Sesame Street.

After 56 years on air, the iconic children’s series—that made its debut on Nov. 10, 1969—is still one of the most beloved TV shows, by children and adults.

After debuting on national public television provider PBS, Sesame Street made household names out of Jim Henson‘s beloved Muppets such as Big Bird, Elmo, Cookie Monster, Bert, Ernie, Mr. Snuffleupagus and more. Plus, it helped educate children about letters, numbers and, over time, more serious subject matters, like death, divorce and drug addiction.

All these years (and more than 4,700 episodes!) later, the show is as popular as ever, with a reported 100 percent brand recognition globally, airing in 180 countries.

But did you know one state actually banned the series, which moved from PBS to HBO in 2015? And that two Muppets were retired after sparking controversy?

Oh, and that Kermit the Frog actually exited the show after just one season? It really isn’t easy being green.

Welcome back! Netflix has unveiled their fun first trailer for a continuation of the beloved Sesame Street series. They’re labeling them as new episodes Volume 1 in Season 56 – a “freshly reimagined Sesame Street series featuring characters you love, fan-favorite segments, and new ways to play!” The first 4 episodes are already ready to watch starting next week on Netflix. The series has been airing on PBS ever since 1970, and has also been streaming with HBO since 2016 as well. But that’s now moving over to Netflix with worldwide options in many languages. Sesame Street was created by Joan Ganz Cooney & Lloyd Morrisett, along with Jim Henson, and has been a wonderfully education show for many decades. The highly anticipated freshly reimagined Sesame Street debuts with a new season on Monday. Episodes will invite children to play along in new ways, bring viewers inside the world’s most famous brownstone, and feature celebrity guests, original music, engaging animation, and, as always, lots of laughter. And all your favorite characters like Big Bird, Elmo, Oscar the Grouch, Grover, Cookie Monster, and many others. Also recommend the excellent doc film Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street about how they made this series and why it’s so special. Enjoy.

Here’s the first official trailer for Netflix’s next season of Sesame Street, direct from their YouTube:

“Season 56 reimagines Sesame Street, inviting children into the action and bringing them hand-in-hand through high-stakes stories, powerful learning moments, and laugh-out-loud surprises. And, as always, Sesame Street’s curriculum is designed to meet children’s most pressing needs — so our focus this season is on kindness and compassion, something we can all use more of today.” –Executive Producer Sal Perez

Each episode will feature interactive, immersive, and visually engaging 11-minute stories that put young viewers at the center of the action. Episodes will drop in 3 volumes and the feature guest appearance in the first volume is professional race car driver and NASCAR champion Bubba Wallace. Throughout the season, Sesame Street friends will explore compassion, kindness, and social problem-solving in ways little ones can relate to — whether it’s learning to take turns, cheering up a friend, or finding ways to solve problems together. Sesame Street originally launched on TV on November 10th, 1969 and for the first time, the new reimagined season will launch on Netflix in 30+ languages offering more options globally for fans to enjoy the beloved show. Netflix’s Sesame Street series is executive produced / showrun by Sal Perez, who has been working on & producing the show since 2008. New head writer & co-exec producer Halcyon Person, an Emmy, Humanitas, NAACP Award-nominated TV maker who’s worked as a writer, director & producer for everything from preschool to late night. Produced by Sesame Workshop. Netflix will debut Season 56 of Sesame Street streaming on Netflix starting November 10th, 2025. Ready to watch?

Netflix’s First ‘Sesame Street’ Season: Watch the Trailer

Netflix is for the children!

On Monday, the streaming giant revealed the trailer for its first Sesame Street season — the 56th season overall of the iconic preschool series — which premieres in exactly one week. Netflix promises its version will have an all-new playability, as well as more comedy.

Netflix will release Sesame Street episodes four at a time over three separate premiere periods — think Stranger Things season five, just with much furrier monsters. The first feature guest appearance on season 56 is NASCAR champion Bubba Wallace, whom parents might remember from this incident.

“Season 56 reimagines Sesame Street, inviting children into the action and bringing them hand-in-hand through high-stakes stories, powerful learning moments and laugh-out-loud surprises,” Sal Perez, Sesame Street executive producer, said in a statement. “As always, Sesame Street’s curriculum is designed to meet children’s most pressing needs — so our focus this season is on kindness and compassion, something we can all use more of today.”

Sesame Street episodes on Netflix will remain 30-minutes long; until 2016, they were an hour.

The show’s new head writer is Halcyon Person, who served the same role on Netflix’s Karma’s World (2021), the animated show from rapper Ludacris starring his daughter, and Dee & Friends in Oz (2024). Netflix’s Sesame Street will be available in 30-plus languages.

Sesame Street first launched on Nov. 10, 1969, exactly 56 years prior to its Netflix era (the seasons align to the years). The new Sesame Street episodes will simultaneously premiere on the PBS Kids app.

These changes have been in the works for a while. More than two years ago, Steve Youngwood, the CEO of Sesame Workshop, walked The Hollywood Reporter through the new vision for the old show.

The single-largest change will see the program drop the “magazine”-style format it has long used in favor of two longer, more narrative-driven segments, which will be paired with a new animated series, Tales From 123. The new format will feature two 11-minute story segments, with the new animated series sandwiched in between them. Read more here.
