Why Did Captain Cragen Die in ‘SVU’? Dann Florek’s Season 27 Death – Hollywood Life

The season 27 premiere of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit opened with a funeral service for the late Captain Donald Cragen, played by actor Dann Florek. Although Cragen had been off SVU for years, fans were surprised to learn the character had died off screen.

“He was the best boss I ever had,” Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) tells the squad, crediting her late mentor during the episode. “Everything that I know about being a Captain, I learned from him.”

But was Cragen’s death inevitable on the show? Hollywood Life explains what we know so far about how Cragen died in the series.

How Did Captain Cragen Die? Inside His Off-Screen Death

Cragen’s cause of death is not clarified during the season 27 premiere of Law & Order: SVU. His former colleagues gather to honor the late captain at his funeral, where a video from his retirement party is shown.

“I lived for my job,” the captain says in the clip. “I don’t think that surprises anybody. And I can’t imagine my life any other way. … It’s been a long road. It hasn’t always been pleasant, and it certainly hasn’t always been easy. … It has been a privilege to have been able to serve with you.”

Why Did Captain Cragen Leave Law & Order: SVU in Season 15?

The captain retired back in season 15, leaving Detective-turned-Captain Benson (Hargitay) to take the lead.

Florek left the series because his character had to retire, just like real-life New York City cops. The actor remained in the Law & Order franchise, though, appearing in its other spinoff series Organized Crime.

Why Did Captain Cragen Die in Season 27 of SVU?

Since we’re only at the beginning of season 27, not much is known about Cragen’s off-screen death, but Florek did not leave the show for any particular reason other than his character’s retirement.

In January 2024, Florek spoke with People about “passing … the baton” to Hargitay’s Benson on the show.

“It’s a beautiful passing of the baton. I got to do one little scene, I think I shot it on Zoom, and I was able to say to her — I’m gonna cry — ‘You have no idea how proud it makes me to say, ‘Captain,’” Florek recalled. “When I started SVU, a lot of people said, ‘Is there room for two Law & Orders? Well, we made it past that. Then I said, I hope we can make five [years]. Then I made 15 [years] and here we are for 25. It’s crazy but good. Crazy because it should be.”

Who’s Left in the Law & Order: SVU Season 27 Cast?

The main cast of Law & Order: SVU features Hargitay, Ice T, Peter Scanavino, Kelli Giddish, Kevin Kane and Aimé Donna Kelly.

Feeling lonely this Navratri? Therapist shares 6 tips to navigate through loneliness this festive season

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

The festive season is a time of joy, celebration, and the warmth of togetherness. However, it may not be a great time for everyone, especially those living far away or cut off from family and friends. Many people experience disappointment and despair during the holidays due to family conflicts, the death of a loved one, and other pressures, which exacerbates the all too prevalent feeling of seasonal loneliness – but rest assured, you are not alone.

The festive season can be difficult for some people.(Pexel)

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Mansi Poddar – a trauma-informed psychotherapist and mental health expert with over 15 years of experience – stresses that the holiday season can be an exceptionally difficult time for some people, which is a completely normal human response to loneliness. She outlines six therapist-approved tips to help cope with festive loneliness, making the season a little easier for those who find it challenging to navigate through the holidays.

1. Acknowledge your emotions

According to Dr Poddar, “Festive loneliness is more prevalent than most people realise. Recognise your feelings rather than ignoring them. By giving your emotions a name, you can lessen their intensity and keep them from turning into self-blame.”

2. Practice mindfulness

According to the therapist, some research indicates that practising mindfulness might help reduce feelings of loneliness. Even if you are only using mindfulness apps and practicing it only for a period of time every day, it makes a difference.

3. Keep a simple routine

Dr Poddar recommends making a to-do list of things you can do, be it daily activities or something special, over the holidays – it helps keep your schedule as well as your mind organised.

She elaborates, “Give yourself permission to let go of everything you are unable to do over the holidays due to emotional, mental, or physical limitations. Try making a menu of things you can do, broken down into high and low-energy activities, if you have trouble sticking to a schedule. It’s crucial that you determine what activities are truly engaging rather than merely something you ‘should’ do.”

4. Treat yourself with compassion

“Imagine a loved one approaching you to share their feelings of loneliness over the holidays. You would most likely listen to their worries, treat them with the utmost kindness, and tell them that you care about and love them,” says Dr Poddar, adding the question, “So why not do the same to yourself?”

She suggests treating yourself the way you would treat someone you love – be gentle with yourself, practice kindness and compassion, believe in yourself, and care for yourself just as you would for a friend.

5. Practice gratitude

“An excellent place to start is with a gratitude diary. Writing down all of your blessings, from the more philosophical to the more mundane, could be a good place to start,” suggests the mental health expert.

Practising gratitude and counting your blessings can help you see the good in people, point out the things you are blessed with, which helps you appreciate what you have – directing your attention to life’s good aspects and eventually, aiding your recovery.

6. Engage with communities

The festive season is a time of celebration and togetherness, so it is only natural to feel lonely. Dr Poddar emphasises that it is a common human sensation and should not be viewed as a personal weakness. “Even if the holidays don’t look like traditional festivities, you may make them a time of healing and purpose by establishing deliberate connections, rituals, and self-care routines,” she highlights.

“The impacts of social isolation can be countered even by conversing with complete strangers. Attend local gatherings like concerts, sporting events, or open-mic nights where you may meet others who share your interests. Become a member of a book club. Make use of social media to broaden your network and get in touch with former acquaintances. Engage in forums and social media groups related to your interests.”

Jessica Sanchez performs in the "AGT" 2025 final

‘America’s Got Talent’ Crowns Season 20 Winner

by jummy84 September 25, 2025
written by jummy84

After all the tears, the cheers, the confetti and the fireworks, America’s Got Talent has a new champion — Jessica Sanchez.

The Texas native’s name was called out during the finale Wednesday night (Sept. 24) on NBC, completing a decades-long dream that a scriptwriter would be proud of.

With her win, Sanchez collects the $1 million champion’s check, an all expenses paid trip to Universal’s new theme park Epic Universe, and a special place in the hearts of a nation.

Sanchez is the comeback kid, for real. She auditioned for the first season of AGT back in 2006, when she herself was a child. Now aged 30 and married, she’s the hero of AGT 2025, which she aced while nine months pregnant with a daughter of her own.

On Tuesday night’s (Sept. 23) live final, Sanchez nailed her rendition of “Die With A Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. Wearing a delicate all-white ensemble, Sanchez was all power and precision. “It’s perfection,” remarked Sofía Vergara, after the singer’s final performance. “You look like a little pregnant angel. I mean you look beautiful, your voice, I’ve never heard anything like that. Bravo Jessica.”

It was Vergara who, during Sanchez’s audition, gave the singer her Golden Buzzer, and a direct pass to the live round of the competition.

Viewers agreed. When America voted for the final time, it was Sanchez who came out on top.

Earlier, Sanchez joined forces with aerial specialists Sirca Marea for one last performance of “Golden Hour” by JVKE, returning to a song that earned her a spot in the Finals.

Performing in front of the acrobatic pair, “I feel like they made the song come alive,” she later told AGT host Terry Crews. “I mean, they’re just so amazing.”

Sanchez came out ahead of a 10-strong Finals field that included Mama Duke, Micah Palace, Steve Ray Ladson, Team Recycled, Chris Turner, LightWire, Jourdan Blue, Leo High School Choir and the high-flying Sirca Marea.

For the record, second place went to freestyle rapper Chris Turner, and singer Jourdan Blue completed the podium in third place. Chicago’s Leo High School Choir came fourth, and visual artists LightWire snagged fifth position.

Watch Sanchez’ final performance below.

More to come.

Paramount+ UK Sets Season 2 of Eve Myles Drama ‘The Crow Girl’

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

Eve Myles (Hijack, Cold Water, Keeping Faith) will return for season 2 of the original drama series The Crow Girl, based on the bestselling novels by Erik Axl Sund, the pen name of Swedish author duo Jerker Eriksson and Håkan Axlander Sundquist, Paramount+ U.K. & Ireland said on Wednesday.

Produced by Buccaneer Media (In Flight, The Burning Girls, Marcella), the second season will begin filming in Bristol this year.

Picking up the morning after the events of season 1, “Bristol Police Detective Jeanette Kilburn has ended her marriage and found herself in bed with enigmatic psychologist Dr. Sophia Craven,” reads a plot description for season 2. “Jeanette’s hunt for the killers of young male asylum seekers takes a shocking new turn when a mummified body, discovered in a church wall, and a body in a freezer reveal a chilling connection. As Jeanette digs deeper, Sophia begins to suspect Victoria Burkeman, her mysterious and unstable former patient who has previously been convicted of multiple murders, could be responsible. With the case growing darker, Sophia suspects Victoria is more familiar than she thought, and Jeanette must face the terrifying truth: the killer may be closer than she ever imagined.”

Returning to their roles along with Myles are Katherine Kelly (Mr Bates vs The Post Office, The Long Shadow), Clara Rugaard (Black Mirror, The Rising), Victoria Hamilton (The Crown, COBRA) and more, with new cast members set to be announced at a later stage.

Executive producers include Buccaneer CEO Tony Wood, screenwriter Milly Thomas, alongside music legend Slash, Myles, Federico Ambrosini, Niclas Salomonsson and Sund. Charles Martin will direct, with Debs Pisani producing. The second season will be produced in association with and distributed by ITV Studios.

The new season was commissioned by Sebastian Cardwell, deputy chief content officer, U.K., and Paul Testar, commissioning editor, for Paramount+ U.K. & Ireland.

“The first season captivated audiences with its bold storytelling and standout performances, and we can’t wait to see where the team takes the story next,” said Cardwell.

Added Wood: “The opportunity to return to the world of DCI Jeanette, Sophia and Victoria is a real thrill; it’s a drama that stretches character and bends time. I’m absolutely delighted to be back.”

Shawn Johnson and Andrew East on Season 4, Preparing for the Show, and More (Exclusive)

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

Shawn Johnson and Andrew East may be former professional athletes, but Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test was far from a cake walk for the couple.

“We’re very used to, I don’t want to say physical pain, but coming from elite athletics, we know how to deal with that,” Johnson tells TV Insider. “It’s an expectation. The mental side was way different than anything I think Andrew or I had ever dealt with before, so that was new.”

They both agree that the mental portion of the show was much harder than the physical portion for them, even though they attempted to train for the grueling physical challenges before filming.

“I thought it was going to be all physical challenges, so I was like, ‘Let’s make sure we’re in good shape and our cardio’s good and our strength’s good,’ but there was so many different types of challenges beyond just the physical challenges that you can’t prepare for,” East explains. “It’s like, how do you face your biggest fear? You have to just face it and see how you do in that situation. … It takes a really unique skillset to do well on that course. It’s way more than just physical prowess.”

Johnson says she tried to work on “holding [her] breath underwater” and “rucking because [she] knew the [backpacks] were heavy,” adding, “I think the only thing we really did was work out to make sure we were feeling good.”

Scroll down for more from our chat with the Season 4 cast members, including how they supported each other through the course, despite competing individually, and more.

Tell me a little about getting cast for the show – was one of you approached first or was it always a two-for-one deal?

Shawn Johnson: I had been asked in previous seasons and, unfortunately, always had to say no because I was either pregnant or postpartum. This time when they came back, they offered both of us, and I was like, “Oh heck yes.” I’d rather do it with my husband, anyways.

Andrew East: I think what made us want to do it is we are kind of adrenaline junkies. We knew there’d be a lot of exciting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. I think we walked away wanting to keep those experiences once-in-a-lifetime and not do them again because it was a really grueling experience but definitely worth it.

PETE DADDS / FOX

Was there any hesitation knowing you were going to be away from the kids for a few weeks and everything?

East: There was for sure hesitation about leaving our kids, but we talked to all the doctors and psychologists and they were like, “We think your kids will be OK for this duration of time.”

Johnson: We brought in, like, a full army for our kids. They didn’t even notice we were gone.

East: They were with their cousins and nana and papa and the whole thing. It was great. I think they probably preferred us leaving. But it was so fun to do together, and I’m glad we did that.

Were you able to work together on the show at all, or was it totally an individual thing?

Johnson: Totally individual, which was fine. We were separated pretty quickly and we would still see each other throughout the day, but we were rarely on the same team. The teams change multiple times a day. You go from singles to doubles to big teams to small teams. But it was almost better that way. We were both independently there for our own challenging to see how far we could go. We were just big cheerleaders for each other.

East: The whole vibe of the show, too, is that everyone is kind of competing against each other, but you’re also not in certain ways. Everyone’s rooting for each other and it feels like if one wins, the whole team wins. I feel like that was the case for Shawn and I and all the cast members. It was really fun to know Shawn and know where she had more she could do and maybe where I could push her in certain ways and if she’s in a really uncomfortable spot, maybe I can show her some good old love in that moment. It was great and I feel like we all got closer together.

Were there ever moments when you saw one another struggling and weren’t able to help the other one?

Johnson: I mean, yeah. We both saw each other go through moments of struggle. It definitely hurts as a spouse to see that. Andrew saw me get concussed and be given a broken nose, and I saw him crack ribs. It was wild that way. But it also challenged both of us to have faith in each other’s strengths and just be like, “I’m here for you if you need me, but you got it.”

East: That was really cool where I know what Shawn’s capable of in a really unique way, I think, so in some ways it was like, you don’t need my help and I’d just remove myself from the picture. Honestly, I would put my money on Shawn in any type of competition or if she’s facing any other competitor. So I knew that she was going to crush it the whole way.

Had you watched past seasons of the show, and were you able to talk to any former cast members about their experiences?

Johnson: We had. So we had watched all the seasons and we have a lot of friends who have been on the first three seasons. A lot of advice – it’s only so transferable because every season’s very different and you don’t know what the challenges are going to be. But I think everyone said the same thing, which is just focus on getting to the next meal. Basically don’t look at the bigger picture, just do little steps day by day.

East: Everyone said it was way harder in person than what the show shows. It’s the little things. Like they really intentionally build the whole experience to make you uncomfortable. They did a good job with that.

What would you say surprised you the most about the experience?

Johnson: I think my favorite thing about the experience was the relationships with the DS and the recruits. I think it’s such an eclectic cast. We’re all from different walks and industries and styles of life, but we all became so close, so fast, and really trusted each other with our lives. The DS imparted their wisdom and their stories and learning they’re truly just trying to make you better was really special.

Was there anyone on the cast that you got close with that you didn’t expect?

Johnson: I didn’t know Brianna [LaPaglia] before at all, and we got to be really close on the show.

East: It was fun because it was such an eclectic crew. Some of the crew was on other reality shows. This was my first reality TV experience, and I think it was very shocking at how stressful the entire experience was. You’re not filming and going back to some fancy hotel room and eating a fancy meal. It’s 24/7 stress and you don’t know what’s going to happen and when. It was constant surprises, is what I felt like.

What are you excited for people to see this season?

Johnson: I am itching to see it. I cannot wait. Because the only thing I remember is myself. I feel like, when we’re doing the show, it’s so intense, you’re so focused on doing your job and helping your team, we actually don’t get to watch a lot of each other go through these moments. Everybody’s on a very specific journey that the DS are helping them with. So I think it will, I don’t know, finish the story for me, to see everyone’s journey and everyone’s struggles and see how they handled it all. I’m so excited to watch it.

East: I’m excited because I think there’s a little bit of everything in it. We laugh, we cry ,we had near-death experiences, we had deep talks. I think it will just be a good TV show to watch. So I’m really excited to watch it.

First Look at Robert Carlyle as Sherlock Holmes in Season 2 Trailer

For those wondering how Watson would reveal that Sherlock Holmes is alive since Robert Carlyle was cast in the recurring role, well, TV Insider’s exclusive debut of the Season 2 trailer ahead of the October 13 premiere appears to do just that!

“Everything changes, Dr. Watson. Everything,” someone says as we watch Dr. John Watson (Morris Chestnut) leave Laila (Tika Sumpter) in bed. He then finds someone raiding his fridge. “My dear Watson,” Sherlock Holmes greets him to his surprise.

Watson began with the presumed death of the iconic detective, Watson’s best friend, at Reichenbach Falls when he faced off with the villain Moriarty (Randall Park). But over the course of the first season, Moriarty was revealed to be alive, messed with Watson’s work, and, ultimately, died due to the doctor’s actions. Since there hadn’t been a body, the major question had been whether Sherlock survived as well. Now, we have the answer.

CBS

The trailer, which you can watch above, offers a look at Watson’s work as “the world’s greatest doctective,” more from Sherlock, and Watson’s ex-wife Mary (Rochelle Aytes) insisting, “You push boundaries. This is what you do.” Is that related to her mother?

Watson is kicking off its second season with Mary’s mother the patient in the premiere. “A Son in the Oven.” Watson and his fellows take her on as their patient when she accidentally poisons herself while suffering from a rare form of dementia that’s progressing with impossible speed.

“She is suffering from a mysterious and fast progressing form of dementia, believing that she is 25 years old and pregnant with her first child,” executive producer Craig Sweeny told us for our Fall Preview.

As for Watson‘s version of the dynamic between the doctor and Sherlock Holmes, that, now, “is a work in progress,” according to Chestnut. The two are also equals, with Watson having more time under his belt as a detective with his medical cases, as we saw in Season 1.

“Morris is so commanding in the role of Watson that I stopped worrying about the character sharing the spotlight with Sherlock Holmes,” Sweeny shared.

He also teased that Sherlock “very much has his own agenda,” which will have him “dropping in and out of Watson’s life in Pittsburgh. Holmes doesn’t share [everything] with Watson at first, and the parts he does share leaves Watson a little unsettled.”

Vince Is Dead, Billy Burke Exits in Season 4 Trailer

CBS isn’t going to make viewers wait until the Oct. 17 premiere to find out who survived the massive fire on “Fire Country.” On Tuesday, the first trailer for Season 4 revealed that Vince (Billy Burke) died in the burning building that the finale ended with, while both Sharon (Diane Farr) and Walter (Jeff Fahey) survived — and Bode (Max Thieriot) seemingly had to be locked in the truck in order to save him too.

In the trailer, Jake (Jordan Calloway) won’t allow Bode to run back inside; he yells, “I will never forgive this.”

After the fire, the trailer cuts to Bode giving a eulogy at his father’s funeral. “I’m going to spend the rest of my career protecting my father’s town, my father’s station, and my father’s mission,” he says. Later, it’s revealed that he feels that means he should be battalion chief, telling Jake (who, more qualified, wants the role), “It’s my birthright.”

The show’s creators opened up about the decision to kill off Vince, telling TVInsider that on a show about firefighters, it felt “truthful to the work that these people do” to have a death.

“Last season was about legacy — Vince dealing with the legacy of his father and using that as a lens to look at what his relationship with Bode was. And as we were talking about the end of the season, we felt like the thing that was really going to shake up the show and shake up our characters in the best way possible and force them to really reassess where they were and what they were doing was this kind of loss,” Tony Phelan said. “And so at the same time, we want to be very respectful of the character of Vince, of how important he is to the show, and how important Billy was as a presence on the show. So, the loss of Vince is going to echo through the entire season, and we are going to see our younger firefighters really have to begin to grapple with growing up and what is the next step for them.”

Elsewhere, the trailer previews a grieving Sharon telling the 42 they’re suspended from active duty and Audrey (Leven Rambin)’s return; plus, Gabriela (Stephanie Arcila) tells Bode she still loves him. Though back for the premiere, Arcila is exiting the series after the episode.

Emmy winner Shawn Hatosy also joins this season and can be briefly seen visiting the firefighters in the trailer. He’ll be portraying a new character who helps firefighters deal with loss.
