Downton Abbey BTS clip reveals how racing scenes were filmed

Just over a month after it arrived in UK cinemas, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is now available to rent and buy on digital platforms – and to celebrate the release, we’ve got an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip giving us a new look at how the movie’s racing scenes were filmed.

It turns out that rather than being filmed at Royal Ascot – where the scenes were set – production actually took place more than 200 miles away at Ripon Racecourse in North Yorkshire.

Alongside footage showing the camera crew hard at work, the clip also includes interviews with the cast, including Lady Mary star Michelle Dockery, who says: “Today we’re filming the scenes at Ascot, but we’re actually at Ripon.

“It’s kind of one of the main events of the film, where the family come together and they go to the races and it’s a really exciting day for everyone.”

Meanwhile, franchise newcomer Alessandro Nivola – who has a key role in the film as somewhat dodgy financial advisor Gus Sambrook – explains: “This is a beautiful old racetrack that’s meant to double for Royal Ascot, which has been renovated since the period of the movie.”

Production designer Donal Woods further details why the change of location was made, revealing that “the real Ascot looks like Terminal 5” and that it is now a “huge skyscraper of a building”.

He continues: “Ripon’s still got a lot of period features so not every shot had to be CGI [or] had to be green-screened. And it’s a very quiet course, I mean, we’re now in the middle of the flat-racing season and we had four days filming plus two days to prep – so we needed a clear time frame to actually create the physical side of Royal Ascot that we’re building.”

Since its release in cinemas, the film – which draws the curtain on the hugely popular period drama after six seasons of the TV show and two previous movies – has gone down very well with long-time fans, while also attracting broadly positive reviews from critics.

In our verdict, we called it a “pleasant stroll with characters you know and love” while also remarking on how it ended “with a touching dedication to the legendary actress” Dame Maggie Smith, who memorably played Lady Violet Crawley and sadly passed away last year.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is now available to buy or rent exclusively on digital platforms and is also still showing in some UK cinemas.

Sonam Bajwa reveals she turned down Bollywood films over kissing scenes: ‘Is Punjab going to be OK with it’

Sonam Bajwa reveals she turned down Bollywood films over kissing scenes: ‘Is Punjab going to be OK with it’

by jummy84 October 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Actor Sonam Bajwa has revealed that she once declined several Bollywood offers because they involved kissing scenes. She says this decision was driven by fear and self-doubt rather than personal conviction.

Punjabi actress Sonam Bajwa initially turned down Bollywood roles with kissing scenes, fearing how her Punjab audience would react.

Sonam opened up about her inhibitions

In a conversation with Film Companion, the Punjabi star opened up about how cultural expectations and the fear of public judgment held her back early in her career. Sonam said she worried about how audiences in Punjab, where she enjoys massive popularity, would perceive her performing intimate scenes on screen.

“I said no to a couple of things in Bollywood because I kept wondering, Is Punjab going to be okay with it? We have that mentality that families will be watching… I was very scared to do a kissing scene back then. I thought, ‘how are people going to respond to it? How will those who’ve made me who I am react? Will my family understand that it’s just for a film?’ I had all these questions in my mind.”

The Carry on Jatta 3 actor added that her hesitation stemmed from wanting to protect her image and stay true to her core audience. She admitted that she did not want to disappoint people who have supported her since the beginning, explaining that she had created certain boundaries for herself out of respect for her upbringing and cultural roots.

However, a heart-to-heart conversation with her parents completely changed her outlook. “A couple of years ago, I finally spoke to my mom and dad about it. They said, ‘Yes, if it’s for a film, it’s fine.’ I was so shocked. I kept thinking, Why didn’t I talk to them earlier? We make so many assumptions in our heads. I was shy to even bring it up, but they were like, Koi nahi, je film layi hai, koi chakkar nahi (It’s for a film, there’s no problem),” Sonam shared.

Sonam Bajwa’s acting journey

Sonam Bajwa began her career as a model before making her acting debut with the Punjabi film Best of Luck (2013). She rose to fame with Punjab 1984 (2014), earning praise for her natural screen presence and emotional depth. Over the years, she became one of Punjabi cinema’s most popular stars, delivering hits like Nikka Zaildar, Carry On Jatta 3, and Sardaar Ji. Alongside her regional success, Sonam ventured into Hindi cinema with films like Street Dancer 3D and Karam Yuddh, and appeared in Tamil and Telugu projects as well. She was last seen in Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 5 and is waiting for the release of Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat on 21 October.

5 Actors Who Faced The Ire Of Netizens For Doing Bold Scenes

5 Bollywood Actors Criticized For Bold Roles (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Despite the evolving film atmosphere and acceptance of diverse storytelling, some audiences target actors with derogatory comments on social media platforms. Female actors, in particular, bear the brunt of criticism and face personal attacks while there are only a few male actors in the industry who have faced such scrutiny from the Indian audience. Take a look at five Bollywood actors who have been mercilessly trolled for taking up bold projects.

1. Tripti Dimri

Tripti made a mark with her charismatic performances on screen right from her debut in Poster Boys. The actress steadily rose to stardom with films like Bulbbul and Qala but surprised viewers after taking up an entirely new persona as Zoya Riaz in the film Animal opposite Ranbir Kapoor. Their bold scenes became an immediate topic of debate on social media. While a section dubbed Tripti as the “National Crush” shortly after, another called out her role.

Her steamy onscreen performance with Bad Newz co-star Vicky Kaushal, particularly their chemistry in the sultry track Jaanam, also made headlines. While the duo’s on-screen dynamic was met with admiration from some, others  criticized her on X (formerly known as Twitter). Trolls even resorted to calling Tripti a “soft p*** girl.”

2. Deepika Padukone

After the release of Gehraiyaan, Deepika Padukone faced merciless trolling for her bold scenes with Siddhant Chaturvedi. Haters even questioned the actor on how her real life husband Ranveer Singh allowed her to do such intimate scenes with another man. Questioning Deepika’s choices, one user on Twitter wrote in Hindi, “Didn’t your husband mind seeing all this?”

However, during an interview with Bollywood Bubble, when Deepika was asked if she sought permission from Ranveer to do the bold scenes, she said, “It’s stupid that we’re even reacting to it.” She further said that Ranveer Singh is proud of her and her bold performance in Gehraiyaan.

3. Mallika Sherawat

Mallika turned into a sensation after her hot sequences in the film Murder with Emraan Hashmi went viral. However, she also faced much criticism on social media. Born as Reema Lamba, her second film was Khwahish, wherein she made a record seventeen kisses, also attracted criticism. The actress often got trolled and questioned for her morality.

However, in 2021, Mallika opened up about her being subjected to such moral schooling. During an interview (via India Today), Mallika said, “That’s what the patriarchal system is. It’s always the women who are always targeted, not the men. Not only in India, but that’s all over the world. Men walk away with everything, they get away with everything, it’s like those who blame the woman for everything. I don’t know why, but more so in India, I feel.”

4. Emraan Hashmi

While Mallika Sherawat might feel that way, sometimes even certain male actors get targeted for their bold onscreen performances on screen. Emraan Hashmi once opened up about being labeled as a ‘serial kisser’ in Bollywood.

During an interview with Shubhankar Mishra, Emraan said, “I think bahot saare artists ke sath ek patent cheez ho jaati hai, ek image set ho jaata hai, aur wo unka saath nahin chodhta hai (With many artists it becomes a patent thing, an image is set, and it doesn’t leave them).” In fact, the actor acknowledged that trolling is a reality and advised people to not take it too seriously.

5. Tanushree Dutta

Former Femina Miss India Universe 2004 Tanushree Dutta bagged her golden ticket to Bollywood in 2005 with Aashiq Banaya Aapne. There was a hue and cry after the release of the film because of Tanushree and Emraan Hashmi’s bold scenes. Tanushree faced immense criticism for taking up a film like Aashiq Banaya Aapne during a time when vulgar scenes and nudity were unacceptable in society.

Years later, in 2018, when Tanushree Dutta accused Nana Patekar of s*xually harassing her on the sets of the film Horn Ok Please and called him a ‘pathological liar’ after his comments about the Me Too allegations, some netizens rushed to use Aashiq Banaya Aapne as an example to blame the actress, saying on Twitter (X) that past bold scenes have “spoiled her image.”

Russell Tovey on ‘Plainclothes,’ ‘Looking,’ and Sex Scenes

by jummy84 September 22, 2025
written by jummy84

Russell Tovey, the gay British actor who’s been out of the closet since he was a teenager, has played characters both repressed (see: Mormon closet-case Joe Pitt onstage in “Angels in America”) and proudly queer (HBO’s “Looking”).

In his latest “Plainclothes,” the Sundance winner written and directed by first-feature filmmaker Carmen Emmi, he plays a closeted family man who sparks an affair with an undercover cop, played by Tom Blyth. In the 1997-set drama, Lucas (Blyth) is a police officer tasked with baiting men for a bathroom stall hookup in one of those depressing Malls of America, only to arrest them, caught not in the act but just before it. Lucas, though, is secretly gay, and his encounter with Andrew (Tovey) sends his world ricketing off its hinges.

'IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT', (aka YEK TASADEF SADEH, aka UN SIMPLE ACCIDENT), Vahid Mobasseri, 2025.

In this New Queer Cinema-inspired drama that doubles as a coming-out story and a romance — Lucas is feeling a new flush of things for Andrew that might not be totally reciprocated — Tovey gives a marvelously restrained performance as a closeted man who may have plenty of furtive gay experience already, but he has more in the way of secrets.

Tovey, though, is perhaps best known for his role as video-game entrepreneur Kevin in creator Michael Lannan’s HBO series “Looking,” which ran for two seasons between 2014 and 2015 and was followed by a TV movie directed by Andrew Haigh. The “All of Us Strangers” filmmaker also executive-produced the groundbreaking Bay Area-set show about gay best friends and their ordinary lives, and directed many episodes.

Fans of Tovey and co-star Jonathan Groff, who played Kevin’s eventual boyfriend and the series’ lead, have called upon HBO for a revival. Tovey would do it in a second, and in his interview with IndieWire at the Magnolia Pictures offices in New York City ahead of the “Plainclothes” release, he unpacked the younger generational appeal of the series, and spoke about his own experiences with repression that led to his latest role.

This interview has been condensed and edited for length.

IndieWire: You’ve played gay characters who are, for the most part, out of the closet in recent years. What drew you back into playing someone so repressed?

Russell Tovey: Normally, I can tell if I want to do something by the first few lines of dialogue, and I loved his dialogue, and then meeting Carmen was just very exciting, because he’s like a little Labrador puppy. He’s very keen and bouncy and enthusiastic and complimentary to me, which is obviously affirming. Yes, he affirmed, he validated my ego. And I thought, “Well, that’s lovely. I want to do this.” And then I met Tom, and Tom’s brilliant. So that felt like, to play this together would be a real privilege, and I wanted to go to Syracuse, weirdly. I dated someone years ago who was from Syracuse, and in my head, it had this romantic sort of like I was like, this, Syracuse sounds so kind of mystical and magical. I mean, there’s parts of it that are, but the majority of it is pretty run-of-the-mill.

What was your experience there like?

I went to a movie theater one day because I had a day off, and I felt an aggression in there that I wasn’t prepared for. There was some guy who bumped into me, and whispered in my ear, “You’ve got a tiny dick, dude.” I remember going, “Wow.” And I thought, well I’m not going to turn around and say, “Sorry, what did you just say?” I sort of laughed at myself because I found it very funny, and I called my friend up and I said, ‘Guess what’s just happened?’ But it was intimidating, and it was wanting or provoking a response to instigate violence. It jarred me for sure. That sort of energy then informed the rest of my experience in that mall. He wanted to fight, and I knew that.

This idea of a plainclothes cop luring and busting gay guys is most famous in the U.S. because of George Michael, which happened in the year this movie takes place. Was there a parallel of this phenomenon in the U.K.? Anti-gay Section 28 laws were still in effect when you came out, so there was still clandestine behavior like that being surveilled

We also still feel inherent trauma as a community from fucking Oscar Wilde, from sodomy laws, from illegalities, from being pushed further into the margins and doing dangerous things because it’s not a safe world, there’d never been a safe space that was created from us. I came out at a time that Andrew Haigh refers to as the “middle generation,” where we can be treated for HIV, but we’re coming out at an age where you’re working out liking people of the same gender, but with disease and risk. That’s a terrifying notion when you’re 13, 14, 15, that you have to think about that for many years, and it’s still the same thing where sex and death were very much in the same thought when you went to bed with someone. Then afterwards, the insecurities and the paranoia about illness were playing out constantly. I’m going to be 44 soon. It can take a long time to shake those things off.

You’re not aware when you’re in school that this law [Section 28] has been put in place because you’re a kid and you’re not really watching the news. You’re unaware that your education has been determined, and your opportunity for an authentic life or another option has been denied. All those feelings of shame, all those feelings of inherent denial of your sense of self, they all exist within [my character] Andrew. They all exist within Joe Pitt in “Angels in America.” They all exist within many characters I play, so that is something I can access. Artists can use our own shit to cherry-pick from and build characters, and in some ways exorcise these things that linger.

'Plainclothes'
‘Plainclothes’Magnolia

The scene in which Andrew and Lucas finally do have sex explicitly shows a condom being unwrapped, almost like it’s held up to the camera. Was that in the script, or your idea?

I can’t remember if it was or wasn’t, but I wanted safe sex to be in there. That was very important. We see a lot of sex scenes. There’s lube and everything but — I love the paraphernalia of that because it is clumsy and it slows things down, and maybe when you’re coming to writing a film or playing a scene, it breaks up the rush of “I need your body right now.” The realities of it shows the realities of Andrew, who is very much like, “This is what we do. This is how we do it. We’re going to do it my way.” What’s beautiful about this is you’ve got two characters, and there is a power dynamic. Andrew’s older, more experienced, the one who seems to be aware, he sets the location, he’s the one who says, “I can’t right now.” When you see him in the greenhouse, and he finds out Lucas’ job, the power dynamic shifts in an instant. I love that this film can take that tone in such an innocent tone, where suddenly he’s the one that’s vulnerable, being splayed open, and this younger guy who’s got no experience has suddenly got the power over him. Andrew has never been challenged before.

It was really important to me that we see condoms being used because it’s that period in history. Andrew could have been horrific to him, and it would’ve been a completely different movie, but it’s two guys who fall in love. You [wonder], “Why are they not together then?” They can’t be because they’re on such different spectrums. Andrew can see in Lucas an opportunity of freedom and authentic life. [Andrew] gives [Lucas] permission to do that, even though he can never give that gift to himself.

You obviously didn’t have an intimacy coordinator on “Looking” during the mid-aughts. Do you feel a difference now?

My relationship with Jonathan Groff was heaven. We absolutely adored each other. We felt so safe. We were looked after. At no point did I feel unsafe or uncomfortable, and I don’t think anybody did. That show was full of love, and we would all love to come back and do it. Even Andrew Haigh has said that.

“Looking” served a similar function for gay millennials that “Girls” did for women and straight ones — well, also gay ones too! “Girls” was recently rediscovered by Gen Z. Are you hoping the same for “Looking,” or have you already observed that?

A whole new generation has found it. It’s all over TikTok. I love the fact that people are outraged that there’s only two seasons and a movie, and they want more. I get asked weekly, “Do more ‘Looking.’” If you can talk to someone, I’d absolutely do more “Looking.” It’s one of the only shows I’ve done where I watch it as a fan.

What can Gen Z identify with in “Looking”?

It’s showing queer people hanging out, being mates, and the mundanities of what it is. They’re not extraordinary people. They’re very average people who have jobs, and they live for weekends, and they’re not super rich. I think it’s very aspirational of just peace, or just being, existing, and not needing more. There’s not really much phone stuff. There’s no social media really in that show. It’s like a pause, a moment of just peace, and I hope people will watch that and feel [they’re] finding some contentment in having good friends, someone to talk to, and be gay, be queer. That’s the goal: You’ve made it. That’s success.

“Plainclothes” is now in theaters from Magnolia Pictures.

Coronation Street just saved its police story with powerful Lisa Swain scenes

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Initially assuming that Becky had been in a coma, Lisa was reeling to hear she had actually been in Spain under witness protection from a gang, and that the real Tia Wardley’s body had been claimed as hers.

We’ve known for some time that all was not as it seemed regarding Becky. But, with the ITV soap leaning so heavily on its police set and criminal chaos of late, it rendered the saga slow and stale.

Then, coming face-to-face with the wife she thought had been dead for the last four years, all eyes were firmly on Lisa; and Myers gave a showstopping performance that turned the entire plot around.

Amy Cudden as Becky Swain and Vicky Myers as Lisa Swain. ITV

Viewers are used to actors portraying shock week after week, as soap land would be quiet and unusual without it.

What Myers achieved here, though, was to transcend the genre and make us truly care about the resurrection of a character we had never known until now.

Although Lisa won us over way back when she secured the conviction of killer Corey Brent (Maximus Evans), she has since clocked up quite the fanbase after being made a regular on the cobbles, and falling for Carla.

So it’s safe to say we were gripped by Lisa’s plight, as she journeyed from shaken widow, right through to traumatised witness and an outraged, protective mother.

The range of emotions spanning across one episode was something we hadn’t had the opportunity to see from Lisa, and both the script and the actress leading it gave their all, creating the most captivating instalment of Coronation Street in months.

Not only has the Becky reveal moved the story on at last, her arrival has elevated it, and amid all the corruption surrounding dodgy DI Costello, we’re back to character-driven drama with Lisa right at the very heart of it.

Carla looking at Lisa as Becky stands nearby in Coronation Street

Lisa told Carla that Becky is alive. ITV

It’s a welcome change of direction, and with newcomer Cudden delivering a strong debut, we’re now ready to find out what kind of person Becky really is.

Although Becky’s presence is sure to complicate the ‘Swarla’ relationship, with the actress recently describing her alter ego’s opinion on Carla, Lisa kept Carla fully involved in the aftermath, and it’s a breath of fresh air to finally take Lisa out of her comfort zone.

Usually seen either at the police station, bickering with daughter Betsy (Sydney Martin) or enduring setbacks with Carla caused by her own struggles, Lisa now has the answers she’s been seeking, and more backstory than the limited, off-screen edition.

It’s not that we didn’t believe in what we’d been told, but it was difficult to engage with the mystery of Becky’s death and whether or not she was a rogue officer.

Being able to get to know Becky, and having an extra layer to add to Lisa’s persona, makes this arc all the more authentic.

Lisa’s explosive scenes have revived what started out as a mini-recreation of Line of Duty, transforming it into a worthy exploration of a popular Coronation Street mainstay’s psyche.

Behind the Scenes at Courtney Love and Madonna’s 1995 VMAs Clash

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Where were you, Gen Xers and elder millennials, when Courtney Love awkwardly crashed Madonna‘s live interview with Kurt Loder after the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards? Eduardo Braniff was literally right there. A mid-level MTV executive at the time, Braniff was the designated talent escort for Love and her Hole bandmates for the 11th annual VMAs, held at New York’s Radio City Music Hall 30 years ago, on Sept. 7, 1995.

Braniff says he was “randomly” assigned to escort the band during rehearsals and night-of-show. And while colleagues knew he was deft at handling “shall-we-say ‘dynamic’ talent,” none could predict that Love would make pop culture history that night: After pelting Madonna and Loder with compacts from her purse, she inserted herself into their chat, which was being held on a platform outside the venue.

The clash between two very different icons — Madonna begged Loder not to invite her up, quipping “Courtney Love is in dire need of attention right now” — went viral a decade before YouTube or Twitter launched, and served as a chill precursor to Kanye West and Taylor Swift’s 2009 debacle. Broadcast during MTV’s hegemonic peak, that night’s actual ceremony featured some equally wild, if forgotten, juxtapositions of stars. The Notorious B.I.G. and Bill Bellamy (remember him?) presented Michael and Janet Jackson with a Moonman for Best Dance Video for “Scream”; Janet wore a “Pervert” T-shirt, widely interpreted as mocking pedophilia accusations against her brother. But nothing could compare to this post-show moment.

The two women were at distinct professional and personal phases at the time. Madonna was enjoying her second consecutive decade of global superstardom, celebrating her fourth Moonman win (for “Take a Bow”), a comeback from the harsh backlash toward her Erotica LP and Sex book era, and preparing to shoot her dream film role, Evita. (Motherhood and her acclaimed album Ray of Light were still a few years away.) She was also a VMAs MVP from the jump, with a slew of definitive show moments behind her, including the seismic debut of “Like a Virgin” at the very first broadcast in 1984; a performance of “Vogue” in Marie Antoinette drag in 1990; and a post-feud appearance with David Letterman in 1994.

Editor’s picks

Fellow scene-stealer Love, by contrast, was still ascendant and much rougher around the edges. A year later, the grunge goddess would get a proper glam Hollywood makeover while touting her part in The People Versus Larry Flynt. But back in ’95, only about a year and a half had passed since the traumatic, era-defining suicide of her husband, Kurt Cobain. That night, before performing “Violet” with Hole, she dedicated it to Cobain, River Phoenix, Hole’s late bassist Kristen Pfaff, and other friends they’d lost.

“To me, she was nothing but super cordial,” Braniff recalls of Love that night. “[But] she was a little loaded for bear with MTV, thinking that they had not done enough to promote the album… She was frustrated.”

During the “chaotic” post-show walk to their cars, Braniff says Love’s entourage included not just her bandmates Eric Erlandson, Patty Schemel, and Melissa Auf der Maur but also pal Drew Barrymore, Love’s toddler Frances Bean Cobain, and a nanny. “It was a little bit like herding cats,” he says now. “One of my cats darted away! I don’t know exactly how she clocked that Madonna was out there, but she did.”

Braniff quickly realized what Love, eyeing the Queen of Pop, was about to do. “She is making her way over to Kurt and Madonna, wanting to be extraordinary Courtney,” Braniff remembers. “She has something to share, she’s got a show to give. I, in my capacity supporting the production, was like, ‘I don’t know if I want to interrupt this.’” Show producers agreed. “They knew that there was some artist-rivalry gold in the making,” he adds, recalling their take as “‘Let that happen because this is going to be good.”

Related Content

And it was. Over an excruciating four minutes, with a sedate Loder declining to moderate much, the two previously acquainted women spoke about their shoes, comedian Dennis Miller, and Madonna’s Maverick label breakout Alanis Morissette. A rambling Love likened fame to working in a hospital: “I like it here. Good money!”

“And a lot of available drugs!” Madonna snarled back. Before the Material Girl’s publicist, Liz Rosenberg, finally whisked her away, air kisses were exchanged. (A solo Love later hugged it out with Loder’s MTV News partner Tabitha Soren.)

“I mean, you have Madonna in full Tom Ford couture, and you’ve got Courtney in that messed-up baby doll look,” Braniff says. “It was almost cartoonish. How could we draw these two more distinctly? There they were.”

The twosome would cross paths a couple times again — most notably for an iconic 1997 Rolling Stone “Women of Rock” cover with Tina Turner — but relations never seemed to thaw much.

“I don’t like her and she doesn’t like me,” Love, who is now based in London, told the Standard last year. “I loved Desperately Seeking Susan, but for the city of New York as much as her.”

Trending Stories

For his part, Loder told his alma mater Rolling Stone back in 2023: “It was a wonderful moment for television. If you were gonna have to write it up later, it would have been terrible… If somebody falls off the top of a building, it’s wonderful television.” (Madonna has never addressed the incident. Neither she nor Love responded to a request for comment for this story through their reps.)

“We all love a good spat, but back in the day, because it was a different media landscape, you didn’t get to have as many episodes in the rivalry,” adds Braniff. “It was a really wonderful capper to the evening and that time.”
