“They end up clashing here – soul to soul… I thought of it as a love scene as we filmed it.” ⚔️ Netflix has debuted a making of promo video for the badass Japanese action series called Last Samurai Standing, which is now streaming on Netflix already. Based on the manga of the same name, it’s about a vicious battle between nearly 300 samurai warriors in Kyoto back in the late 19th century. Shujiro enters a deadly game where points are earned for each kill. During the Meiji period, 292 warriors, including Shujiro Saga, gather at the Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto at nightfall, lured by the promise of a cash prize. Under the veil of night, the temple is filled with unease & the presence of bloodthirsy warriors. When the signal is given to begin the game, the combatants launch into their relentless battle. It’s packed with incredible fight scenes! Starring Junichi Okada, Yumia Fujisaki, Kaya Kiyohara, Hiroshi Tamaki, Hideaki Itō, Gaku Hamada, Hiroshi Abe. “Nothing less than their heads!” Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for an action thriller samurai movie called Lone Samurai, made by American filmmaker / producer Josh C. Waller. This just premiered at Beyond Fest 2025, where they explain in the intro: the film “reimagines the classic samurai epic through an intimate, hallucinatory lens. When a violent and reckless ronin is shipwrecked on a remote island, he’s left with no outlet for his rage—only the ghosts of his past and the unforgiving landscape around him now. As isolation corrodes his mind, his search for peace turns into a brutal spiritual trial, one that blurs the line between reality and nightmare.” The film stars Japanese actor Shogen (real name Shogen Itokazu) as Riku, along with Keigo Sunagawa, Yuma Sunagawa, Sumire Ashina, and badass Indonesian actor Yayan Ruhian you’ll recognize from The Raid films. The fest adds: “With sparse dialogue, stark visuals & a surreal crescendo that fuses Cast Away’s existential solitude with the feverish pulp of Temple of Doom, [the film] becomes a meditation on redemption, madness, and survival.” This sounds and looks pretty cool! Click play.

Here’s the official trailer (+ two posters) for Josh C. Waller’s film Lone Samurai, direct from YouTube:

A violent, reckless samurai (starring Shogen) is shipwrecked on a desolate island, stripped of any outlet for his rage. As he embarks on a punishing spiritual journey to quiet his turbulent mind, the line between meditation and madness begins to blur. When external demons—manifesting as flesh-hungry cannibals—abduct him, his grip on reality and his mastery of the blade are tested in ways he never imagined. Lone Samurai is written and directed by American producer / filmmaker Josh C. Waller, director of the films Raze, McCanick, and Camino previously; plus a producer on many other indie projects including Mandy. Produced by Alan Pao, Doris Pfardrescher, and Josh C. Waller. Filmed in Indonesia and Japan. This initially premiered at the 2025 Beyond Fest and Newport Beach Film Festivals this fall. Well Go USA will release Waller’s Lone Samurai film direct-to-VOD on December 12th, 2025 this fall. Look good? Want to watch?

“You fools who live without meaning: kill each other, until just one remains.” Netflix has revealed their full official trailer for their awesome new Japanese action series called Last Samurai Standing, which is not a game show despite the title sounding like it might be. Based on the manga of the same name, it’s about a battle between nearly 300 samurai warriors in Kyoto back in the late 19th century. “One life, one point.” Shujiro enters a deadly game where points are earned for each kill. Who will be the last samurai standing in this sinister scheme? During the Meiji period, 292 warriors, including Shujiro Saga, gather at the Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto at nightfall, lured by the promise of a huge cash prize. Each given a wooden tag, they join a vicious game in which they must steal the tags of their fellow participants and reach Tokyo to win the prize money. Under the veil of night, the temple grounds are filled with unease and the presence of bloodthirsy warriors. When the signal is given to begin the game, the combatants launch into their relentless battle for survival. Let them fight! Starring Junichi Okada, Yumia Fujisaki, Kaya Kiyohara, Hiroshi Tamaki, Hideaki Itō, Gaku Hamada, Hiroshi Abe. This looks as badass as Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai and as entertaining as the recent Shogun series. Stylish and action-packed! I’ll definitely be watching when it’s out.

Junichi Okada on Creating Netflix’s ‘Last Samurai Standing’

by jummy84 September 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Japanese heart throb-turned-tough guy Junichi Okada hopes to have a global hit on his hands with the upcoming Netflix tentpole Last Samauri Standing, and the formula he believes will work is a combination of contemporary aesthetics with a healthy dose of old school action.

Speaking on the sidelines of this week’s 30th Busan International Film Festival, Okada — a veteran now of two decades in cinema — explained that the aim was to produce Japanese period drama and action that “speaks to the new generation.”

“I was thinking about how I could deliver this, and what I had in mind was taking traditional elements, the intrinsic parts, the basics [of martial arts], but we encapsulate them in stories and characters for the younger generation,” says Okada. “We wanted to look into how people could experience the action.”

Audiences in Busan have this week been treated to a preview of Last Samurai Standing, Netflix’s much hyped six-part actioner that’s set for a November 13 global rollout.

The series throws its 292 fallen samurai warriors into a fight to the death and, ultimately, for the winner, untold riches, with period echoes of FX’s wildly successful Shogun and plot echoes of Netflix’s own blockbuster Squid Game. But the style and substance in the action sequences is its own.

As Okada — onboard as lead actor, producer and action choreographer — and director Michihito Fujii explained, the plan here has been to eschew leaning heavily on CGI in order to capture the spirit of history’s martial arts masters — and to not allow technology to distract from the drama.

“I wanted to make sure that the human drama is not something separate from the action sequences that we will be delivering in the show,” says Fujii, who named-checked the likes of great cinematic “realists” Buster Keaton and Akira Kurosawa as his inspirations.

A former member of Japanese boy-band V6, Okada has become one of Japan’s most bankable stars in recent years thanks to a brand of believable action built on his own decades-long commitment to traditional martial arts. His proficiency in Japanese and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, as well as Jeet Kune Do and Kali fight styles, has helped him become one of the industry’s leading fight choreographers.

Okada today gives a nod to the great Japanese director Kurosawa, creator of the epic Seven Samurai along with a string of hits that redefined action cinema, and a filmmaker who learned martial arts in order to make his films feel more real.

“I am a martial arts geek, or otaku,” says Okada. “Ever since I was a child, I wanted to work in movies. I wanted to work in action. I started out as an idol, a pop star, and being in the movies was my dream. Basically, to do that I looked into what Kurosowa did and what he did is he had these people around him to make it authentic, actual martial arts experts, sword fight experts. So to be authentic, I wanted to make sure I had the skills of martial arts. Having that is kind of my weapon, that is my skill.”

Last Samurai Standing is set in 1878 Japan, the post-samurai period when these famed warriors had — along with their swords — been left on society’s scrap heap, as the country’s feudal system came to an end. Drawn by mysterious invitation to the historic grounds of the Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto, they are tempted into a game of survival, with the claim that 100 billion yen awaits the winner. Cue violence, and a wild cast of characters and — in case we’ve not mentioned it — a bloody fight to the death.

The series comes lifted from the pages of Shogo Imamura’s best-selling Ikusagami series of novels, later turned into a manga series.

The show is quite obviously a passion project for Okada. “I felt that in the original source material, [Shogo Imamura] was basically working on period drama but trying to change the model,” he says. “I wanted to speak to a newer audience.”

Official US Trailer for ‘Samurai Fury’ Historic Japanese Action Thriller

“Give me a year of your life for freeing you. I’ll put your skills to good use.” Well Go USA has revealed an official US trailer for a Japanese action thriller called Samurai Fury, which is just the simplistic English title. The film’s original title in Japan is Muromachi Outsiders or 室町無頼 (Muromachi Burai) because of the story: this historical action epic follows Hasuda Hyoe, a man who led an uprising in the Muromachi period. In Kyoto, Hyoe gathers a group of outlaws as he plans an unprecedented riot against authorities. As famine and plague ravage 15th century Japan, the laconic shogun watches and does nothing. The rebellious wanderer Hasuda Hyoe has seen enough and plots to depose the shogun and save Japan from self-imposed devastation. Starring Ôizumi Yô as the heroic Hyoe, the story pits him against one-time friend Honekawa Doken, the iconic Shin’ichi Tsutsumi in a fight for survival. Also with Nagao Kento and Matsumoto Wakana. Looks like a full-on epic with massive fight scenes and tons of extras. I just hope the rest is good.

Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Yû Irie’s action film Samurai Fury, direct from YouTube:

Produced by Kazuma Kuryû. This first opened in Japan in January earlier this year, and it also played at the New York Asian Film Festival this summer. Well Go USA releases Samurai Fury direct-to-VOD to watch starting October 7th, 2025 coming soon. Any good?

“Legend is what history doesn’t record… but still remembers.” Netflix has revealed a first look featurette for the next season of Blue Eye Samurai, the awesome anime action fantasy series which debuted back in 2023. I’m a big fan of this series – it kicks all kinds of ass, I enjoyed watching every episode. Glad it will continue on soon. They’re already deep in development on the sequel, the next season, currently titled Blue Eye Samurai 2. Everyone’s favorite samurai character Mizu is back again in a continuation of the story from the first season. “Mizu’s quest for revenge will continue. Season 2 of the award winning series, Blue Eye Samurai is now in production.” View a sneak peek with the series’ co-creators Amber Noizumi & Michael Green as well as executive producer, Jane Wu. They tease that this might take place at different times in the past, and we might see a few characters that were killed in the first season back in here again. That’s all they hint at, as there’s not much more other than this very brief glimpse of footage – direct from Anime NYC. This is enough to get me hyped for this, whenever it’ll be out to watch sometime next few years.

Here’s the first look in production teaser for Netflix’s series Blue Eye Samurai – Season 2, via YouTube:

Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 Teaser

Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 Teaser

Set in Edo-period Japan, Blue Eye Samurai follows Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine), a mixed-race master of the sword who lives a life in disguise seeking the deliverance of revenge. Blue Eye Samurai is a series created by Amber Noizumi and Michael Green (Oscar-nominated writer of Logan, Blade Runner 2049, Murder on the Orient Express, The Call of the Wild, Jungle Cruise, A Haunting in Venice, “American Gods”), who are also executive producers and writers. Jane Wu is supervising director and producer. Also produced by Haven Alexander and Nick Read. Blue Eye Samurai is made by Blue Spirit animation studio. It’s executive produced by Noizumi, Green, and Erwin Stoff. Netflix is expected to debut Blue Eye Samurai: Season 2 streaming on Netflix in late 2026 / early 2027.
