Is papaya safe during pregnancy? Gynaecologist shares the benefits and risks of eating this fruit

Pregnancy is a time of joy and excitement, but it also means paying close attention to what you eat for your own and the baby’s well-being. This fruit is rich in minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Still, there is always a debate about whether it is safe to eat papaya during pregnancy.

Papaya is believed to be heat-inducing and pregnant women are often told to avoid it. (Adobe Stock)

Papaya is a very healthy fruit. It contains a lot of folate, potassium, and fibre. It is also a good source of vitamin C, which helps keep your immune system strong and supports your baby’s growth during pregnancy. “Papaya can help with digestion, easing common problems such as constipation, bloating, and heartburn”, Dr Sonamm Tiwari, Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at Hiranandani Hospital Vashi, tells Health Shots.

While papaya has many benefits, it’s important to know its risks during pregnancy. Dr Tiwari warns: “The enzyme papain in papaya can cause uterine contractions, which may lead to miscarriage or preterm labour”. Unripe or semi-ripe papaya is even riskier, as it can cause the amniotic sac to rupture, resulting in a loss of amniotic fluid that can harm the feotus.

Dr Tiwari further says that “pregnant women should be cautious, especially in the later stages of pregnancy, when risks can increase. Expectant mothers should stay informed about these risks as they make dietary decisions.”

Is unripe papaya better than ripe papaya during pregnancy?

Eating papaya during pregnancy requires caution. Papaya contains phytoestrogens, natural compounds that can mimic estrogen in the body. Even ripe papayas may disrupt hormones and potentially cause problems such as low birth weight or developmental issues for the baby. Dr Tiwari advises, “It is important to be careful and eat papaya in moderation.”

Should you totally avoid papaya during pregnancy?

According to Dr Tiwari, the answer is “not necessarily”. If you still want to enjoy this tropical fruit, the expert shares some tips on how to do so safely:

  • Choose fully ripe papayas: Unripe papayas have much higher levels of papain compared to ripe ones, making ripe papayas a safer option for pregnant women.
  • Practice moderation: “If you decide to eat papaya, limit yourself to no more than 1 cup of fully ripe fruit per day,” the doctor says. Pay attention to your body; if you feel any discomfort, stop eating it right away.
  • Consult a healthcare professional: If you have any concerns about eating papaya during your pregnancy, it’s important to talk to your doctor for personalised advice. Every pregnancy is different.

What to do if you accidentally ate papaya during pregnancy?

Mistakes happen. If you accidentally ate papaya, stay calm. Eating a small amount usually won’t cause harm. “Watch for any unusual symptoms, such as allergic reactions, stomach problems, or uterine contractions”, shares the doctor. If you notice anything unusual or have concerns, contact your healthcare provider. They can support you through this.

Jennifer Lawrence ‘felt very safe’ with Robert Pattinson

6 November 2025

Jennifer Lawrence didn’t want an intimacy coordinator on Die My Love because she felt “very safe” with Robert Pattinson.

Jennifer Lawrence stars in the new comedy-drama film

The Oscar-winning actress stars alongside Robert, 39, in the new comedy-drama film, and Jennifer has revealed why she didn’t feel an intimacy coordinator was necessary on set.

The 35-year-old movie star said on the Las Culturistas podcast: “We did not have [an intimacy coordinator], or maybe we did but we didn’t really … I felt really safe with Rob.

“He is not pervy and very in love with [partner] Suki Waterhouse. We mostly were just talking about our kids and relationships.

“There was never any weird like, ‘Does he think I like him?’ If there was a little bit of that I would probably have an intimacy coordinator. A lot of male actors get offended if you don’t want to f*** them, and then the punishment starts. He was not like that.”

Meanwhile, Jennifer previously admitted that she suffered self-doubts before giving birth to her first child.

The Hollywood star conceded that she didn’t know what to expect from motherhood and how she would cope with the challenge of raising her child.

The film star – who has Cy, three, and a son called Louie, who was born earlier this year – told Vogue magazine: “It’s so scary to talk about motherhood. Only because it’s so different for everybody.

“If I say, It was amazing from the start, some people will think, It wasn’t amazing for me at first, and feel bad. Fortunately I have so many girlfriends who were honest. Who were like, It’s scary. You might not connect right away. You might not fall in love right away. So I felt so prepared to be forgiving.

“I remember walking with one of my best friends at, like, nine months, and being like, ‘Everyone keeps saying that I will love my baby more than my cat. But that’s not true. Maybe I’ll love him as much as my cat?'”

It’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month — This Is My Story From Survival To Safe Horizon

by jummy84 October 28, 2025
written by jummy84

Warning: This story contains graphic details of domestic violence.

I will never forget the night that finally made me leave. My ex-partner and I were at an event with friends. Everything seemed fine until he — as he often did — switched from affectionate to enraged without warning. Throughout the night, he sent me cryptic texts: “I’m watching you. You’ll see what happens when we get home.”

The venue was dark and crowded, which allowed him to hide in the shadows. When he finally appeared, I was already in tears. I told him I was done. He grabbed me so tightly I could barely breathe, whispering, “You’ll never leave me.” When I tried to escape, he threw me to the ground and began kicking me—my face, my stomach, my back. I remember praying, “God, please help me get through this.” A friend eventually pulled him off me, and another rushed me outside.

That night, I ran to my sister’s apartment. My best friend joined us, and together they convinced me to call my mother. I didn’t want to; I had been hiding so much from my family, and I knew calling meant going to the hospital and filing a report. I also feared what my ex had always threatened: “If you send me to jail, I’ll kill myself.”

When my mom saw my bruised face over FaceTime, she broke down. At the hospital, I was surrounded by police officers and doctors, forced to retell the story again and again. Even then, I tried to protect him—until I learned he and his mother lied to the police, saying I’d fallen down stairs. That betrayal broke something in me. I told the truth. I filed for a restraining order, terrified but determined to protect myself.

When I met him, I was in a vulnerable place and searching for love, something I think now that he sensed. The control and manipulation started subtly—name-calling, jealousy, isolation. I was shocked, yes, but I took it because I convinced myself that he loved me. Then the emotional abuse became physical. I was constantly walking on eggshells, terrified of his next outburst. He would punch walls, throw objects, and then apologize, promising he’d never hurt me again. Like so many survivors, I stayed, believing he could change. I was in a constant state of hope—hope that the man I first met would return, hope that things would go back to “normal.” However, the truth is that there was never anything normal about it.

Domestic violence is not simply isolated or personal; it’s cultural, systemic, and global. It crosses every boundary: race, class, gender, and age.

The abuse only escalated from there. Over time, I became someone I didn’t recognize—isolated, anxious, and ashamed. He would push me against walls, crack drywall, and then threaten to harm himself to pull me back in. I remember breaking down locked doors to stop him from self-harming. Every time I thought of leaving, he’d promise to change—or promise to die.

After that final night, something inside me broke open. I started therapy and eventually found Safe Horizon through friends and family who told me about the work they do. It was the first time I felt truly ready to speak out.

I learned that my story was not unique, and that’s what makes it so devastating. Domestic violence is not simply isolated or personal; it’s cultural, systemic, and global. It crosses every boundary: race, class, gender, and age. The tactics abusers use are eerily similar: isolation, intimidation, emotional manipulation, and control.

Safe Horizon, the largest victim service nonprofit in the U.S., provides critical resources for survivors of abuse and violent crime. What drew me to them was their inclusive approach—they support survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, sex trafficking, and more. Their Streetwork Project helps young people experiencing homelessness due to abuse, offering food, shelter, medical care, and compassion without judgment. They reach survivors wherever they are, meeting them with dignity and safety.

Too often, young women—especially Black women—don’t feel safe seeking help. We’re told to stay quiet, that no one will believe us, that leaving is pointless. And the question survivors hear most—“Why didn’t you just leave?”—is one of the most harmful. As FKA Twigs bravely shared when speaking about her own experience, that question blames the survivor instead of the perpetrator. Leaving isn’t simple—it’s dangerous. It’s layered with fear, shame, financial dependency, and psychological manipulation. Even after leaving, survivors face systemic challenges: renewing restraining orders, reliving trauma in court, and constantly looking over our shoulders.

Through Safe Horizon, I found healing, advocacy, and community. The organization’s leaders like Lisa A. O’Connor and Liz Roberts, create true safety by approaching survivors with empathy, patience, and emotional intelligence. Even small gestures—asking “Do you welcome hugs?”—remind survivors that we have autonomy again.

One of the most profound parts of my healing has been realizing that survival doesn’t mean the pain disappears. It means transforming it. As author and grief expert David Kessler wrote, I learned to turn my “pain into purpose”. I use my voice now to help others recognize the signs of abuse before it’s too late. Love should never make you smaller. Real love doesn’t silence, it protects and uplifts.

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, reach out to Safe Horizon at 1-800-621-HOPE (4673) or visit safehorizon.org. There is a way out, and there are people here to help you find it.

Diwali 2025: Veterinarian doctor shares 5 tips to keep pets calm and safe from fireworks sounds

Happy Diwali 2025! Pet parents prepare in advance before Diwali evening to ensure your dogs and cats stay calm and stress-free.

Diwali 2025: The festival of light is a celebration for all of us, full of excitement and illumination, but when celebrated with crackers, many are excluded from joy. For many, bursting crackers are synonymous with Diwali celebrations. Besides the most immediate consequence, which is the emission of polluted gas, the loud sounds also overwhelmingly impact vulnerable groups, like elderly people and pets at home.

ALSO READ: Think Omega-3s are just for you? Your dog needs it too: Vet shares top nutrients for growing pets

Dogs, anyway, have a heightened sense of hearing, so the sounds are intensely overstimulating for them. They become frightened, cowering in corners, trying to hide.

To address this concern of pet parents, HT Lifestyle spoke to Dr Deepak Saraswat, head vet at Zigly, who pointed out that noise sensitivity in pets can make Diwali stressful for them.

“Diwali brings bright sparkles and joy, but for dogs, the loud firecrackers can be quite stressful. Noise sensitivity in pets can make this festive time tough for our furry friends,” the vet shared.

The way forward is to ensure that pets feel comfortable and secure amid the celebrations. Typically, Diwali evening sees a series of explosions with people everywhere bursting crackers at the same time. There’s no breather space, but just constant explosive noises. This can be very disorienting and anxiety-inducing for dogs.

Veterinarian doctor Saraswat shared 5 tips for pet parents so that they can prepare beforehand and reduce their pet’s stress:

1. Make a quiet, safe place

  • Create a quiet space in your home, not near windows or doors. Put your dog’s favourite bed, blankets, and toys to make it warm and inviting.
  • Closing curtains and closing windows are good at muffling large noises and protecting from flashing lights. This may calm your dog when the celebrations get noisy.

2. Use soothing sounds

  • Play calming music or switch on the television in the background to drown out firework noises.
  • Soft tunes or pet playlists reduce anxiety and distract your dog from sudden booms.
  • This creates a more peaceful indoor environment and helps your pet relax during peak cracker hours.

3. Keep close and comfort your dog

  • Being in their presence does matter. Spend more time with them nearby, offer gentle cuddles, and console your dog if he/she seem to be tense.
  • Some dogs enjoy massages or snuggle sessions, monitor their reaction, and calm them down in a way that they like.
  • Please don’t leave them at home alone, especially on late nights when crackers are most potent.

4. Schedule early walks and limit time outdoors

  • Organise walks early morning or during quieter periods, far from cracker spurts.
  • Always keep your dog on a leash and avoid noisy, crowded areas.
  • For safety, it is best not to take your dog out when there are likely to be fireworks, and ensure home doors and gates are shut to avoid accidental release.

5. Use calming products if necessary

  • If your dog is excessively anxious, consider using calming products like anxiety vests, or pheromone diffusers that your vet recommends.
  • These provide soothing comfort through pressure or calming fragrances.
  • Be sure to consult your vet first before attempting new remedies, and have your pet’s water bowl full to help alleviate stress and dehydration.

Cardi B And Kehlani Channel TLC’s “Creep” In New Music Video “Safe”

by jummy84 September 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Cardi B and Kehlani have brought their collab “Safe” to life, turning the standout track from Cardi’s sophomore album Am I The Drama? into a cinematic moment. In the music video, the “Up” rapper and “Folded” songstress tap into their inner TLC, recreating the iconic “Creep” scene with silky matching pajamas and a playful dance routine.

The clip opens with Cardi and Kehlani moving in sync as she delivers the hook: “I don’t need a rich ni**a, just somebody that can make me feel, safe/ I dealt with a couple ni**as, but nobody ever made me feel, safe like you/ ’Cause when I’m with you, I just know I’m fine/ You take all the pressure off my mind (all the time)” — with Kehlani echoing “safe” in the background.

As the storyline unfolds, Cardi takes on the role of a pregnant girlfriend to her on-screen partner. Their romance quickly turns dark after a heated argument between the two sends roses crashing to the floor and Williams storming out the door. Moments later, tragedy strikes when a gangster shows up at Cardi’s door and fatally shoots her.

Williams’ character returns home only to be distraught by the bloody aftermath. Watch below.

“Safe” featuring Kehlani hails from Am I The Drama? which dropped today (Sept. 19). Standing at 23 tracks, the project features a star-studded lineup including everyone from Lizzo to R&B/Pop icon Janet Jackson.

The LP has standouts like “Dead” and “Shower Tears,” both featuring Summer Walker, the aformentioned “Safe” with Kehlani, “Better Than You” with Cash Cobain, and “Nice Guy” with Tyla. In addition to “Safe,” the collaborative track “Principal” with Janet Jackson is another crowd favorite especially for the simple fact that Cardi was able to secure the “Pleasure Principle” icon, herself.

AITD also has cuts like the circulating songs, “Bodega Baddie” and “Imaginary Playerz,” as well as interesting titles like “Man of Your Word,” which could be an ode to her divorce with Offset, and the return of “WAP” featuring Megan Thee Stallion.

To further push the album, Cardi B announced her first-ever headlining Little Miss Drama Tour kicking off post-pregnancy in February and running through April 2026. She will be hitting the major cities like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Toronto, Atlanta, and others.

Cardi hopped on X to remind her fans that she’s locked in, although expecting baby No. 4. “Album drops Friday! Thank you everybody for the love and support…by the time tour comes I’ll be doing splits, somersaults backflips and handstands,” she wrote. “I want this really bad and I’m on a very strict plan.. trust me I’m determined to give my fans the best album AND tour experience!!”

“I owe this to myself, and I owe this to my past. They’ve been waiting for such a long time. I know we don’t live for the fans, but I owe this to y’all,” she added.

Bigg Boss 19: Salman Khan Questions Gaurav Khanna For Playing Safe After Tanya Mittal, Baseer Ali Call Out Game Plan; Labels Mridul Tiwari ‘+ 1’ Contestant During Weekend Ka Vaar

by jummy84 September 21, 2025
written by jummy84

The latest Weekend Ka Vaar saw Salman Khan put Gaurav Khanna in the spotlight once again, questioning his lack of participation and visible presence in the house. Citing the recent pirate task, Salman asked Gaurav to explain his contribution, pointing out how his absence from action is raising questions about his strategy and intent in the competition.

Salman Khan Calls Out Gaurav Khanna For Giving A Star Cameo

When asked about his role in the pirate task, Gaurav said, “It was our strategy to study other teams’ players and send people accordingly. We sent the girls first, then later played accordingly. I wanted to play, but…” Salman interrupted to probe deeper, asking, “Aapka ghar mein jo dikh raha hai, ye aapka asal kirdaar hai? Are you getting intimidated by other contestants’ talents? You need to speak up on muddas. How are you getting performance pressure on that? This is a competition of the mind to tackle issues rightly. You’re an intelligent man why are you not using it?”

Defending his stance, Gaurav clarified, “I like to stay aloof from all the abuses and aggression that happens during tasks.” However, Salman delivered a sharp reality check, saying, “Your role in the house is like a star cameo, jo poster mein nazar aata hai, but picture mein nahi dikhte.” As Gaurav continues to walk the fine line between restraint and invisibility, it remains to be seen whether he will finally rise to the occasion or fade further into the background.

Salman Khan Calls Out Mridul for Lacking Individuality

On the latest Weekend Ka Vaar, Salman Khan turned his attention to Mridul, questioning his individuality and visible presence inside the house. Drawing comparisons, Salman remarked, “Jitne bade Gaurav hai TV pe, utne bade aap social media pe ho. But if you haven’t bought your followers, why have they followed you? And now that you’re not visible in the show, will they continue to like you?”

Salman further pointed out that Mridul often comes across as a supporting act rather than a standalone player: “Sometimes you’re with Natalia, sometimes with Gaurav — you’re always showing up in the +1 category. Your personality inside the house is very different from the one people see on your channel. You’re not giving any solo opinions; you’re always seen under someone’s shadow.” Agreeing with this critique, Mridul admitted that he, too, has been feeling the same about his current stance in the game.

“You’re hiding something…” “I’m not even here, man.” Voltage Pictures has revealed an official trailer for a movie called Safe House, a generic action thriller made by filmmaker Jamie Marshall. Not to be confused with the 2012 Denzel Washington movie also literally called Safe House – or any of the other recent movies about people hiding out in a safe house. The intense thriller is about six government agents sequestered in a covert location after a terror attack on Los Angeles. As they attempt to navigate their way through a web of paranoia, they come to suspect the perpetrator may be one of their own. But, who? Starring Lewis Tan, Lucien Laviscount, Hannah John-Kamen, Ethan Embry, and Holt McCallany. As totally expected, this looks especially bad. The script will probably make it even worse if anyone dares try to watch this film.

Here’s the official trailer for Jamie Marshall’s action thriller movie Safe House, direct from YouTube:

Safe House Movie Trailer

The screenplay is written by Leon Langford. Produced by Alexandra Cocean, Lucas Jarach, and Timothy C. Sullivan. This hasn’t premiered at any film festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. Voltage Pictures will debut Marhsall’s Safe House movie in select US theaters coming soon this fall stay tuned for the exact date. Anyone interested in watching this?

While a trip during the rainy season is calming, there are a lot of health challenges, particularly for pregnant women. Know how to stay safe with these tips.

Monsoon unveils a new side to familiar sceneries, whether it’s making nature look greener or giving the cityscape a fresh look. So, people feel tempted to go on trips during the rainy season to see these beautiful sights, including pregnant women. But monsoon also brings several challenges that demand extra caution for expectant mothers. From slippery roads to a higher risk of illnesses, pregnant women need to take due precautions to ensure a safe journey.

ALSO READ: Gynaecologist explains why pregnancy mood swings worsen during monsoon and suggests 5 tips to improve mental wellbeing

Dr Ritu Choudhary, Lead Consultant, Obs and Gyn, Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Apollo Cradle and Children’s Hospital, Bangalore-Electronic City, told HT Lifestyle that safety is essential, from maintaining hydration to eating clean foods. She said, “With some pro-activeness in choosing the right mode of transport, keeping oneself hydrated, eating clean food, and prioritising safety, expectant mothers can ensure a safe and pleasant journey in monsoons. ” Further, she cautioned that if the conditions worsen, then visit a doctor.

Dr Ritu Choudhary shared eight tips, including essentials ranging from what types of clothes to wear to the preferred seat type on transport:

1. Ask a doctor first

  • Always consult the gynaecologist before arranging any travel, especially during the first or third trimester of pregnancy.
  • Travel may be prohibited during high-risk pregnancy or at certain stages, depending on individual health conditions.
  • Always carry reports and documents of medical history and emergency contact numbers.

2. Selecting proper transportation

  • Trains and private vehicles are usually more comfortable and safer than buses or two-wheelers during the monsoon; thus, always prefer those if possible.
  • When travelling via flight, always check the airline policies for pregnant women and avoid air travel after 36 weeks of pregnancy.

3. Check the weather and road conditions

  • Always check the weather before and look at a weather app or website to get a clearer view of whether to venture out.
  • Avoid going out when it is pouring rain, or there are storms or other warnings.
  • Long road trips should be further considered by the prospect of wet roads, water pooling, and poor visibility.
  • All of these situations drastically increase slipping and falling or getting into a car accident.

4. Prioritise comfort and safety

Wear comfortable clothes while you are travelling.(Shutterstock)
Wear comfortable clothes while you are travelling.(Shutterstock)
  • Wear loose, cotton clothes and keep a spare set of clothes nearby. Carry waterproof jackets and strong umbrellas.
  • Wear anti-slip, comfortable shoes to minimise the risk of slipping on wet surfaces.

5. Maintain hygiene

  • The risk of infections like UTIs and gastroenteritis is greater during the monsoon.
  • Keep hand sanitisers, wipes, tissues, and a toilet seat disinfectant spray handy.
  • Minimise the use of public toilets. Drink clean potable water.

6. Follow a balanced diet

  • Pregnancy cravings are normal, but it’s advisable to avoid street food during the monsoon.
  • Eating fruits, salads, that are already cut and food that is left uncovered can be risky.
  • Oily, spicy, or very salty foods could also trigger heartburn or indigestion.
  • Consume freshly cooked food only prepared under hygienic conditions.

7. Ensure protection from mosquitoes

  • Dengue and malaria peak during the monsoon season so dress in long-sleeved shirts and apply pregnancy-safe insect repellents.
  • Stay away from stagnant water and sleep under a mosquito net on your travels

8. Take breaks during travel

  • Extended travel can cause leg cramps, back pain, or fatigue. Remember to take regular breaks from your travels to move and stretch.
  • If you are travelling by car, be sure to stop every 1.5–2 hours.
  • When booking a train ticket, it is best to book a lower berth for the convenience and safety of getting on and off the train.

Download Festival may be famed for its massive stages, legendary acts and 70,000-strong crowds — but behind the scenes, an army of council officers are working year-round to keep it safe, compliant and connected with the local community. In this exclusive interview with Andy Cooper, Environmental Health Manager at North West Leicestershire District Council, Event Industry News uncovers the hidden work of licensing, environmental health and safety teams who make one of the UK’s biggest festivals possible.

What does the local council actually do at a festival like Download?

First of all, we’re the Licensing Authority and we issue the license for Donington Park, allowing events like Download Festival to take place on the site.

We chair the Safety Advisory Group (SAG), which brings the event organisers together experts from various agencies to guide and support event planning and safety.

Our communities and communications teams help with liaison with parish councils and local residents, and getting information out there to keep communication open and responsive.

During the festival our officers oversee food safety, water testing, and hygiene inspections, working closely with on-site teams to ensure everything meets high standards and complies with the law.

We also live-monitor sound levels and campsite conditions, with a direct link to event management to prevent and respond to any issues.

We inspect bars, work with taxi services, and ensure all licensing conditions are met during the event.

It’s a whole load of hidden work – all geared towards people having a fun and safe time at Download.

When does planning for Download start, and who’s involved?

Our work to prepare for the next Download Festival happens year-round. As soon as the festival is over, we debrief and start planning for next year, with SAG meetings, joint planning sessions and site visits. We use the learning from the event just gone to improve planning for the following year’s event alongside the event organisers.

Our monthly SAG meetings usually start in the January, with subgroups set up for noise, health and safety, water safety, traffic, police and security and so on.

The event is pretty unique in that we also have to consider aerodrome safeguarding because it’s so close to East Midlands Airport. So, alongside all the usual considerations for an event of this size we’re also looking at the impact of pyrotechnics, radio frequencies, drone mitigation, lighting and structures, in relation to the airport operations.

As part of the process, the event organisers will reach out to partners, businesses, and residents, and will host several engagement meetings. Each year we’ll run various tabletop exercises running through different scenarios to ensure we can react, deal with and manage different situations that could arise.

With the festival taking place in early June, the site build starts in May, and during the build, site visits will be held with different agencies.

The Safety Advisory Group is absolutely key to the safety of the event.

Collectively, we offer advice and guidance, and help event organisers understand their responsibilities. We make sure they have the necessary plans and procedures in place – for things like risk assessments, emergency planning, and crowd management.

Our advice is always based on relevant legislation, best practices, and the specific circumstances of the event. We bring together the various agencies –  local authorities, emergency services, health and safety bodies, and other relevant organisations – which means everyone is aware of the event plans and can contribute their expertise and resources effectively.

One of the things that makes Download such a success is the way that the event organisers engage with the planning and safety process, before, during and after each festival. Delivering an event of this scale, while ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all attendees, is no small feat. It requires exceptional planning, dedication, and collaboration.

Communication and coordination between different agencies is key – in the planning and in the real time management of the event, which, ultimately means people have a good, safe time, and the festival gets a well-earned reputation as a well-run event.

As the local council for the area, we also need to have an eye on our permanent communities and any impact the festival might have on them. The SAG works to minimise any potential negative impacts of events on the local community, such as noise, traffic congestion, or disruption to local businesses.

We’ve found that, so long as local people are aware of what’s happening and they have a place to contact with any concerns, they’re generally very supportive of the festival and what it brings to the area.

How is safety and compliance managed during the festival itself?

During the live event, we’re on the ground, working side-by-side with event teams in the control centre and across the festival site to keep everything running smoothly.

Our ultimate role is to make sure the event runs successfully and safely, so all that planning, communicating and coordination really comes into its own during the festival itself.

With more than 70,000 people on site typically, our job is not just about ticking boxes. We’re constantly monitoring, checking, inspecting, communicating – working as one big team with the event organisers and other agencies.

If issues arise during the event our officers are in contact on the ground with the organisers to deal with issues swiftly. And then we have daily debriefs –  each day ends with a review of any incidents or concerns, so we can continually improve safety, even as the festival is in full swing.

What are the biggest challenges from a regulatory perspective?

Large-scale festivals come with complex risks. Some of the most critical areas are food hygiene, water quality and sanitation, crowd safety and noise control.

We also keep a keen eye on how waste is managed on the site, and the access to the site, whether that’s traffic management around Donington Park or taxi license and safety checks.

Each agency brings its own expertise to the table. For example, police and SIA handle security, while the council uses industry standards like the Purple Guide to ensure best practices are followed.

What happens after the festival ends?

For us, the post-event review is just as important as planning.

Each agency sends debrief feedback to the event organisers, and then we have a joint in-person session with all partners. Each agency receives these findings and we share them with our parish councils.

Any lessons learned are used to shape planning for the following year, so we are always raising standards and making sure we avoid repeat issues.

Why is this work so important – and often overlooked?

Many people don’t realise the scale of local authority involvement in making festivals happen. It’s not just about enforcement – it’s about enabling a safe, successful event that benefits everyone.

Council teams take great pride in their work. We help create an environment where festivalgoers can have fun, while also protecting the local community from disruption.

It’s a rewarding role that deserves recognition.

What’s it like to be part of a major festival from the local authority side?

It’s an honour and a real point of pride to be part of Download Festival. Although I’ve worked on the event for many years, this year was my first time leading as the SAG Chair, and it was a fantastic experience.

I’ve received great feedback from event organisers, local councillors, and colleagues, which means a lot. It’s a real team effort, and the collaboration with partner agencies is invaluable.

We’re all working toward the same goal: a safe, successful event for everyone involved.

What makes this work meaningful for council staff?

The bulk of the work brings three council teams together – Licensing, Environmental Health and Environmental Protection. We chair the Safety Advisory Group for the event and we’re the lead for food health and safety. Our communities team also supports us with liaison between the event and the communities surrounding Donington Park.

Being involved in a large-scale event like Download offers something unique – there aren’t many licensing, environmental health and environmental protection professionals that get to work on the second largest festival in the country!

For many Environmental Health Officers (EHOs), this might be their first experience working on an event of this scale. It’s a chance to apply their skills in a dynamic, high-profile setting.

We also get to collaborate with our colleagues from across our organisation and other agencies – staff who don’t usually work in events get the opportunity to contribute, learn, and grow in new ways.

And finally, there’s a real sense of achievement in helping deliver a nationally recognised event that puts the district on the map.

Are there any personal highlights?

Absolutely – there are definitely perks to being part of the action!

Catching Green Day up close was a standout moment from this year! But more than that, it’s seeing everything come together – the planning, the teamwork, the problem-solving – and knowing you played a part in making it happen.

Why does this work matter beyond the festival itself?

I think this kind of behind-the-scenes work builds public trust and showcases the value of local government in action.

We aim to strengthen community ties through our work by working closely with residents, businesses, and partners, helping to foster a sense of shared ownership and pride.

We’re also really aware that successfully hosting a major event like Download enhances the district’s reputation as a capable, vibrant, and welcoming place.

And ultimately, we hope that promoting what we do can help to inspire future talent. By showcasing the impact of public service in such a visible way can encourage others to consider careers in local government.
