Does coffee make you rush to the loo? Florida gastroenterologist explains why drinking coffee stimulates bowel movements

Do you need to drink coffee in the morning to stimulate bowel movements? Dr Salhab explains the science behind the connection.

We’ve all experienced it: that urgent need to dash to the bathroom right after your morning coffee – or the dread of drinking coffee when you’re out and about. While it might feel like a quirky coincidence, there’s actually a scientific explanation behind it.

Dr Joseph Salhab, a gastroenterologist and health content creator from Florida, specialising in digestion, liver, pancreas and nutrition, is explaining what makes you want to run to the loo after drinking coffee. In an Instagram video posted on November 8, the gastroenterologist highlights the role of coffee in stimulating bowel movements and shares three gentler alternatives that won’t leave you running to the loo.

Why does coffee make you need to poop?

Dr Salhab states, “Does coffee make you have to go poop? If it does, you’re not alone. In fact, 30 to 40 percent of people who drink coffee regularly report that coffee has to make them go to the bathroom in the morning.”

He mentions that this happens for a few reasons. He explains, “First is the caffeine content. Caffeine can stimulate movement of the colon within four minutes of ingesting it. Coffee also stimulates contraction of your gallbladder to pump digestive enzymes and bile. And this also stimulates your gastrointestinal tract to start moving.”

The gastroenterologist adds that coffee is typically served warm, and consuming warm beverages can naturally stimulate bowel movements – warm water also works the same way. He continues, “Also, the antioxidants within coffee have been shown to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria within the gut and these beneficial bacteria can also influence how often we use the restroom.”

Gentler alternatives

Dr Salhab outlines three effective ways to manage that sudden urge to run to the loo after drinking coffee.

  1. You can opt for beverages with lower caffeine content – such as green tea – or simply cut down your usual coffee intake to reduce its laxative effect.
  2. Switching to a cold brew or iced coffee also helps.
  3. If that doesn’t work, you can just switch to a decaf version, which still has plenty of antioxidants and health benefits, minus the sudden urge to rush to the bathroom.

Rush Honor Kiss’ Guitarist Ace Frehley: ‘An Undeniable Character’

by jummy84 October 17, 2025

The members of Rush are looking back on their time touring as an opener for Kiss in the Seventies. Following Ace Frehley‘s death on Thursday, Oct. 16, Rush shared a tribute to the Kiss guitarist, calling him an “undeniable character.”

“Absolutely stunned and saddened by the news Ace Frehley has tragically passed away,” the band wrote on Instagram. “Back in 1974, as the opening act for KISS, Alex, Neil and myself spent many a night hanging out together in his hotel room after shows, doing whatever nonsense we could think of, just to make him break out his inimitable and infectious laugh.”

The band added, “He was an undeniable character and an authentic rock star. RIP Ace .. thanks for welcoming us newbies into the rock and roll world.”

Rush‘s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson previously shared stories from their tour with Kiss (and especially Frehley) in a documentary, Time Stand Still, back in 2016.  While on the road, Lifeson used to dress as “The Bag” — placing a paper bag over his head and putting his hands through his pants to entertain his bandmates and Frehley.

“Gene was very, very upset with the Bag,” Lifeson recalled in the documentary. “And that made Ace even happier.”

Trending Stories

“Gene was straight,” Lee added at the time. “He wasn’t high like we were. He had a different sense of reality when he came into Ace’s room. We were drinking and smoking and generally being idiots.”

Frehley died in Morristown, New Jersey, at age 74. Lori Lousararian, Frehley’s rep, attributed his death to a “recent fall at his home,” though a specific cause of death was not immediately available. “We are completely devastated and heartbroken,” Frehley’s family said in a statement. “In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth.”

Rush Reuniting For 2026 Anniversary Shows

by jummy84 October 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Rush will celebrate a milestone anniversary by hitting the road next year for the first time since the 2020 death of legendary drummer Neil Peart. Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, who are both now 72, will be joined for the shows by new drummer Anika Nilles, who previously played with Jeff Beck and has released four solo albums.

The Fifty Something tour will begin June 7 in Los Angeles and run through Sept. 17 in Cleveland. Rush will play two sets each night selected from a pool of 35 songs, including hits and rarities. Click here for tickets.

“It’s been over 10 years since Alex and I have performed the music of Rush alongside our fallen bandmate and friend Neil,” says Lee. “A lifetime’s worth of songs that we had put our cumulative hearts and souls into writing, recording and playing together onstage. And so, after all that has gone down since that last show, Alex and I have done some serious soul searching and come to the decision that we fucking miss it, and that it’s time for a celebration of 50-something years of Rush music. So in 2026 my BFF Lerxst (aka Alex Lifeson) and I are going to hit the road once again to pay tribute to our past and to Neil by performing a vast selection of Rush songs in a handful of cities. No small task, because as we all know Neil was irreplaceable.”

“Yet, life is full of surprises, and we’ve have been introduced to another remarkable person; an incredible drummer and musician who is adding another chapter to our story while continuing her own fascinating musical journey,” he continues. “Her name is Anika Nilles, and we could not be more excited to introduce her to our loyal and dedicated Rush fanbase, whom, we know, will give her every chance to live up to that near impossible role. Before we hit the stage, we also hope to add another musician or two to expand our sound a wee bit and free up Alex and I, in order to show off some of our new fancy dance steps. Lerxst, Anika and myself, along with many of our longstanding crew members have been hard at work rehearsing and designing the kind of Rush show you’ve grown accustomed to expect from us. We dearly hope you will come along and help us celebrate our history together.”

Lee and Lifeson have performed together on a handful of occasions since Peart’s death, most notably for two 2022 tribute concerts in memory of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.

“We are thrilled to support the Fifty Something tour, celebrating a band whose music has resonated and inspired fans for generations, and to honor Neil’s extraordinary legacy as both a drummer and lyricist,” said Peart’s widow Carrie and daughter Olivia. “Neil’s musicianship was singular. Compositions of intricacy and power that expanded what rhythm itself could express. As both drummer and lyricist, he was irreplaceable. Inimitable in his artistry, and unmatched in the depth and imagination he brought to the lyrics that inspired and moved so many, he profoundly shaped how fans connected with him and the band, giving voice and meaning to their own lives. As the band enters this new chapter, it promises to be truly unforgettable. We are excited to see how their new vision unfolds, and to hear this legendary music played live once again.”

Here are Rush’s tour dates:

June 7, 9: Los Angeles (Kia Forum)
June 18: Mexico City (Palacio de los Deportes)
June 24, 26: Fort Worth, Tx. (Dickies Arena)
July 16, 18: Chicago (United Center)
July 28, 30: New York (Madison Square Garden)

RUSH Reveal How They Chose Anika Nilles as Their New Drummer

by jummy84 October 6, 2025
written by jummy84

RUSH surprised fans on Monday morning with the announcement of a 2026 North American tour, marking their first shows in 11 years. Even more surprising may have been their choice of drummer to fill the shoes of the late Neil Peart: the relatively unknown Anika Nilles.

Interestingly, RUSH frontman Geddy Lee first mentioned Nilles’ name in a 2023 interview with The Guardian, saying, “I heard this drummer the other day, I think her name is Anika. She played on the last Jeff Beck tour and I thought was she was terrific.”

On Sunday night, October 5th, at a press event at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland (as transcribed by Ultimate Classic Rock), Lee revealed how Nilles became RUSH’s new drummer.

“My bass tech, Skully was working with Jeff Beck and he was on tour,” began Lee. “Sadly, before Jeff passed away, he was on tour with him for a few years, and on the last tour, he was playing with this drummer named Anika Nilles, an incredible drummer, and he would come home, he would rave about her, What a brilliant player she was, and great person, blah, blah, blah…”

He continued, “So I kind of looked her up, and she’s all over YouTube. She’s fairly well known in her own world of music. And then we started talking about playing again, so I said, check her out. Maybe that’s an interesting way to go. And so one thing led to another, and when we made the decision, we wanted to see if it would work.”

Lee went on to say that he and guitarist Alex Lifeson didn’t exactly know what their intentions were when they brought Nilles in to jam with them, even likening it to an “experiment.”

Rush Announces Reunion Tour To Celebrate Life Of Drummer Neil Peart

by jummy84 October 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, co-founders of the classic rock band Rush, have announced the band’s first tour in 11 years. The 2026 “Fifty Something” tour will, in the words of the band, celebrate Rush’s “music, legacy and the life of late drummer and lyricist Neil Peart.”

The tour, with German musician Anika Nilles taking drum duties, launches Sunday June 7 at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum, the first of two nights there.

See below for full tour itinerary.

In a lengthy statement (read it in full below), Lee said, “It’s been over 10 years since Alex and I have performed the music of RUSH alongside our fallen bandmate and friend Neil. A lifetime’s worth of songs that we had put our cumulative hearts and souls into writing, recording and playing together onstage. And so, after all that has gone down since that last show, Alex and I have done some serious soul searching and come to the decision that we fucking miss it, and that it’s time for a celebration of 50-something years of RUSH music. So in 2026, my BFF Lerxst (aka Alex Lifeson) and I are going to hit the road once again to pay tribute to our past and to Neil by performing a vast selection of RUSH songs in a handful of cities. No small task, because as we all know Neil was irreplaceable.”

Peart died in January 2020 of glioblastoma.

The 2026 tour is being undertaken with the full support of Peart’s widow Carrie Nuttall-Peart and daughter Olivia Peart, who said in a statement, “We are thrilled to support the Fifty Something tour, celebrating a band whose music has resonated and inspired fans for generations, and to honor Neil’s extraordinary legacy as both a drummer and lyricist.”

After the two dates in Los Angeles, the Fifty Something tour will then go to Mexico City for one show, followed by two-night stands in Fort Worth, Chicago, New York and Toronto. The tour ends on September 17 with a single concert in Cleveland.

The band also announced today a 50-track super deluxe anthology, RUSH 50, available in five distinct configurations, including the (1) Super Deluxe Edition, (2) RUSH Store Exclusive Super Deluxe Edition, (3) 7-LP Deluxe Edition, (4) 4-CD Deluxe Edition, and (5) Digital Edition. The career-spanning anthology includes the first-ever reissue of their 1973 debut single and concludes with a live recording the final song Lee, Lifeson, and Peart played together during the 2015 R40 Tour closer at The Forum.

Among the band’s many hits are “Tom Sawyer,” “Fly By Night” and “New World Man.”

Here is Lee’s full statement:

“It’s been over 10 years since Alex and I have performed the music of RUSH alongside our fallen bandmate and friend Neil. And here is the Carrie Nuttall-Peart and Olivia Peart statement:

“We are thrilled to support the Fifty Something tour, celebrating a band whose music has resonated and inspired fans for generations, and to honor Neil’s extraordinary legacy as both a drummer and lyricist.

“Neil’s musicianship was singular. Compositions of intricacy and power that expanded what rhythm itself could express. As both drummer and lyricist, he was irreplaceable.
