Rugby Shirts Are Everywhere — Are You Game?

From pitch to pavement, the rugby shirt has emerged as fashion’s latest heritage sportswear revival, bringing bold stripes and crisp collars into a modern context. The classic staple — think heavyweight jersey shirts with folded polo necklines — has officially touched every corner of the industry, …

bitchy | Princess Kate didn’t go to the women’s Rugby World Cup final & England won

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

For the past month, the Women’s Rugby World Cup has been played across stadiums in England. The Princess of Wales, patron of England’s men’s and women’s national rugby teams, has only been to one match during the month-long tournament. Her husband, who is patron of the Welsh national rugby teams, has also only been to one match this month. They went to separate matches on the same day so they wouldn’t have to attend another event together. While the Welsh women didn’t do so great in the World Cup, England’s Red Roses battled their way to the final. And guess what? They WON! Another English women’s team winning a major championship! You would expect their royal patron to be there, at the World Cup-winning match, right? Well, Kate couldn’t be bothered. She sent them a good-luck tweet before the final

Good luck England! 🌹🤠 Wishing the very best of luck to the @RedRosesRugby in their Women’s Rugby World Cup Final at Twickenham today. We’re so proud of you! C pic.twitter.com/AqoVN1FUKP

— The Prince and Princess of Wales (@KensingtonRoyal) September 27, 2025

And that was it. This match was in LONDON, at the Allianz Stadium. The final got historic crowds for women’s rugby. There’s a huge boom for women’s rugby right now following some amazing matches at last year’s Paris Olympics. Meaning, there’s never been more interest in the sport, and it would have been amazing for England’s Red Roses to have their royal patron there, cheering them on AT HOME. Like, Prince William was lazy as hell and sexist as hell for not flying to Australia to support the Lionesses in the Women’s World Cup final in 2023, but at least you could say “well, it would have taken a lot of time and effort to fly to Australia last-minute.” William still should have done it, don’t get me wrong. But it’s absolutely insane that Kate was too f–king lazy to go to London for this major moment in women’s rugby, women’s sports and English sports. Kate literally had ONE day of work last week. This happened on a Saturday too, there was no school run to divide her precious attention. But hey, she tweeted her congratulations after the match. She didn’t sign it “-C” so the message was done by staff.

Congratulations to @RedRosesRugby, the new Women’s Rugby World Cup Champions! 🏆🏉

Well done to Canada – you had an outstanding tournament. Both teams should be so proud! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🇨🇦 https://t.co/O0Wg2rdUUb

The Rugby Shirt Is Fall’s Easiest, Coziest Trend—Shop Our Picks

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

The college student uniform looms large this fall, and among all the track pants, flip-flops, and sweater vests trending right now, the rugby shirt is the most popular campus staple of the moment. And for good reason: It’s one of the most versatile layering pieces you can own, on top of being available at every price point. Why not invest while you’re still ahead of the curve?

Rugby shirts—essentially just long-sleeve polo shirts, traditionally made from thick, sturdy cotton—were initially popularized by their namesake sport because they provided warmth and protection during matches. In the 1950s and ’60s, as the prep aesthetic gelled, Ivy League students adopted the tops for off-duty pursuits. And with the rise of brands like Ralph Lauren and J.Crew in the ’70s and ’80s, rugby shirts (and their short-sleeved cousins) became enshrined in preppy, academic style.

Glamour’s rugby shirt trend wish list

Now they’re back in a big way. Prep has been a major fashion trend for a few years now, but it’s evolving this fall, drawing more on campus style and sporty references—leading us right to rugbies. Bold stripes, another hallmark of the rugby shirt, are also gaining ground among the street-style crowd, as are polo collars, meaning this is one of the easiest ways to buy into several of the season’s biggest trends.

I saw them all over the showgoers at Copenhagen Fashion Week, where brands like Sea and Damson Madder were incredibly popular among the crowds. (You can shop both labels in my edit below.) Rugby tops are also enjoying a big showing at New York Fashion Week; attendees are pairing them with barrel jeans and sheer skirts as the city navigates September’s transitional weather.

Styling a rugby shirt can take about 30 seconds; if you find yourself rushing out in the morning, just throw on one of the stops with some worn-in jeans, leather loafers, and rectangular sunglasses to nod at classic prep. Wear a rugby over a dress in 70-degree weather; you can pop it off and tie it around your waist or shoulders when the sun is out.

But there’s room to get a little weirder too. On chillier days, layer one of the tops over a paper-thin turtleneck and under a denim jacket or trench coat; you’ll look like a Nancy Meyers protagonist. You can also contrast the borrowed-from-the-boys silhouette with more feminine bottoms like sequin skirts or silk pants. At the office, replace your button-down shirts with rugbies—they’ll look just as polished with your oversized blazers and wide trousers.

Get a jump start on your rugby shirt collection below; my edit includes thin, under-$20 gems, heavyweight OGs, and new-school takes in cashmere. Your fall capsule will thank you.

bitchy | Prince William & Kate sent tweets instead of showing up for their rugby patronages

by jummy84 August 25, 2025

Prince Harry used to be the royal patron of England’s Rugby Football Union. After the Windsors forced Harry out of his “royal” patronages, they let the RFU patronage sit dormant for a year, then they gave it to the Princess of Wales. Since 2022, she’s only done a handful of rugby themed-events. She and William did attend a rugby game in March, but that’s the only thing Kate has done with rugby in two years. Well, the Women’s Rugby World Cup started last Friday with some big round-robin match-ups, including England vs. the United States. England won. And their patroness was not there to see it. But hey, she sent a tweet. So did Prince William, who is patron of Welsh Rugby.

Wishing the Red Roses the very best as they kick off their Women’s Rugby World Cup campaign tonight. I look forward to cheering you on and seeing the team rise to the challenge on home soil! C https://t.co/Dyx0MEgucY

Much like William and Kate skipping VJ Day and just sending one tweet about it, I really find it odd that these two “working royals” don’t understand what an “easy win” it would be to simply show up? Like, it’s the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, you should actually take a day “off” from your vacation to make it there in person. It’s even more galling with these rugby games – it’s less of a time commitment, it’s an actual “fun” activity which tons of people would love to do, and they could bring their kids. Incidentally, as if on cue, photographers got a few pics of Kate and William in Balmoral on Sunday. That’s their justification for not showing up for rugby – they were on vacation in Scotland, how dare you expect them to switch up their vacation plans to work!

bitchy | Princess Kate ‘never misses’ her kids’ soccer and rugby matches

by jummy84 August 24, 2025
written by jummy84

The current Princess of Wales is often credited with inventing things which have existed for years, decades or centuries. Remember the log seat Kate “invented”? Remember when she invented maternity leave? Remember when she invented buttons? Good times. Well, this week, Kate is being credited with inventing soccer-moms. You see, one of the new Real Housewives of London claimed that she sees Kate at the Wales kids’ sporting events all the time, which is a brand new thing and definitely not what Princess Diana was known for either! Behold, an excerpt from Tom Sykes’ Substack “Soccer Mom Kate Is Raising Her Children a Whole New, Very Un-Royal Way.”

Prince William and Princess Kate’s parenting style has long been a source of fascination to me. I strongly believe these two are going to raise the first generation of royal children not to be traumatized by their upbringing in over 70 years. I have several friends whose kids either go or went to the same school as William and Kate’s kids and I checked in with them today after Real Housewives of London star Panthea Parker, speaking to Hello!, gave a rare insight into the Waleses parenting style.

She revealed that the Princess of Wales never misses her children’s sports matches, whether soccer or rugby. Her son’s school plays against Prince George’s, she explained, so she often sees Kate cheering from the sidelines.

“I see her quite a few times because my son’s school plays against her son’s school. So they play rugby and football against each other so we’re always at her school or my school. I do see her a lot but not to talk to, just from afar. So classy, so lovely, and she never misses any of her children’s matches, so really amazing.”

I have heard variations on this theme from many parents over the years. One parent whose kids were at school with them when they lived in London told me: “They always showed up to absolutely everything. Often both of them, but always Kate. She never wore make-up at school events or on the school run, and we were all very protective of her. She always looked amazing, but noticeably very slim. She often looked absolutely shattered, just like the rest of us, but was relentlessly cheerful.”

A parent whose children attend their current school told me: “They are like caricatures of middle-class parents. I went to the house for a kid’s birthday party, and they were the ones organizing the games and playing rounders [a British game similar to baseball]. Any of us lot would get an entertainer in and sit in the house drinking rosé.”

It’s always been very clear that William and Kate have made a conscious decision to fight for their children’s day-to-day lives to be steeped in normality, a habit setting them apart from previous generations of royal parents.

[From The Royalist]

While I agree that Kate is trying to raise the kids differently than “the royal way,” I also think she just doesn’t know any other way, and William is fine with it. The reason William is fine with it is because Diana already paved the way and broke all of those stuffy traditions anyway. The biggest difference between Diana and Kate is that Kate seems extremely opposed to boarding schools, whereas Diana was fine with shipping off her sons to boarding schools when they were pretty young (too young, if you ask me). Kate is a pretty typical Millennial/Xennial helicopter parent, super-involved in her kids’ school lives and sporting events. Also: “She always looked amazing, but noticeably very slim. She often looked absolutely shattered, just like the rest of us, but was relentlessly cheerful.” Hm.
