The Best Skin Care Routine for Mature Skin, According to Dermatologists

by jummy84 November 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Our skin is constantly evolving, which means changes to our regiments are sometimes needed—especially when it comes to finding the best skin care routine for mature skin.

While almost every skin care routine checks the same basic boxes—cleanse, treat, moisturize, repeat—mature skin care routines also typically target concerns like fine lines, loss of elasticity, and hyperpigmentation. According to Dendy Engelman, MD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist, as we age, our skin loses moisture faster, and our collagen and elastin production starts to decline. Introducing anti-aging ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, and peptides can go a long way, but building a consistent daily routine is just as important when caring for mature skin.

We asked dermatologists and skin care experts for their tips to craft the best skin care routine for mature skin. Ahead, you’ll find…

The best morning routine for mature skin

Think of your morning skin care routine as your skin’s best defense against your environment and busy day. “The morning routine focuses on protecting the skin from UV exposure, pollution, and oxidative stress.” Paula Brezavseck PA-C, board-certified physician associate and founder of Azala Skin Clinic, tells Glamour. Here’s what it should include:

Gentle Cleanser

“Use a mild, hydrating cleanser (cream or oil-based are good options) to remove impurities without stripping the skin’s natural moisture barrier,” says Angela Lamb, MD, director of the Westside Mount Sinai Dermatology Faculty Practice.

Serum

While not essential, a morning serum is a great opportunity to work some extra skin care actives into your routine without overwhelming your skin at night. “Vitamin C a potent antioxidant that protects the skin from UV rays and free-radical damage from stress and pollution,” says Dr. Palmer. “It also helps to build collagen and fade areas of hyperpigmentation.”

If you’re noticing more dryness in your skin throughout the day, you can also opt for a gentler serum for an extra shot of hydration. Look for a formula with peptides or hyaluronic acid—“a humectant that can hold up to 1,000x its weight in water, giving skin a plumper, smoother appearance and reducing the look of wrinkles caused by dehydration,” explains Dr. Whitney Hovenic, double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs Surgeon.

Moisturizer

“Mature skin is often drier, so apply a good quality, fragrance-free moisturizer daily to trap water and keep skin hydrated,” Dr. Lamb says. “Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or glycerin.”

SPF

If your daily moisturizer doesn’t include sun protection, make sure to add a layer of broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher—yes, even if it’s winter or you’re planning to be inside all day. “Sun protection is essential, especially on the face, neck, and hands, as UV exposure is one of the biggest drivers of visible aging,” Brezavseck says.

The best evening routine for mature skin

While the morning skin care routine is all about prep and protection, nighttime is for recovery. Active ingredients work hard while you’re sleeping (without pesky environmental complications) to resolve common mature skin concerns. “Because the skin’s natural repair processes slow with age, nighttime consistency becomes especially important,” Brezavseck says. Here’s what you should use:

Cleanser

Since you’re washing your day off (sweat, makeup residue, dirt) you can opt for a lightly heavier-duty cleanser at night, like a foaming formula rather than a balm. But since mature skin care is all about preserving hydration, Dr. Lamb still says to avoid harsh soaps.

Retinol or retinoids

Retinol tends to be the centerpiece of the of the anti-aging skin care routine and for good reason: “Retinol stimulate cell turnover, increases collagen production and decreases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It has also been shown to regulate oil production and decrease inflammation and hyperpigmentation,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Debbie Palmer.

That endorsement might make you want to start drenching your face in retinol nightly, but you’re totally new to the ingredient—and especially if you have sensitive skin—start slow. Kiran Mian, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Hudson Dermatology & Laser Surgery, recommends starting out by with a pea-sized amount of retinol cream or serum to your whole face once a week. Look out for signs of irritation, and gradually increase use (up to every other night) according to your skin’s tolerance.

Targeted Treatment

This is where you can tailor your nighttime routine to your unique skin care concerns. It’s generally best to avoid pairing retinoids with other chemical exfoliants or harsh ingredients, but if you think your routine needs another active, there are additional options.

How to Master Your Curly Hair Routine, According to Pro Stylists

by jummy84 November 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Have you ever seen a curly hair routine on TikTok that made you question…everything? You’re not alone. For every texture from loose 2A waves to tight 4C coils, there’s a trending curly hair routine that promises unprecedented bounce, definition, and shine. And while every curl type deserves its own unique consideration, most routines employ the same basic formula. There’s plenty of great advice on CurlyTok, but if you expect a whole new head of hair the first time you try a new method, you might end up frustrated. That’s why we brought in the experts to break down the essential steps of any great curly hair routine—plus, insight on how to nail down yours.

Ahead, you’ll find…

Which steps should be part of every curly hair routine?

Cleanse

“A well-rounded curly hair routine should always include a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup,” celebrity hairstylist and curly hair specialist Mirna Jose tells Glamour. Alternatively, if you’re trying out the Curly Girl Method or prioritizing hydration, you can use a co-wash—a cleansing conditioner.

Condition and Detangle

After you’ve lathered up, you’ll want to lock in moisture and detangle your hair while it’s still wet. “I would use the Kristin Ess Ultra Hydrating Curl Repair Conditioner to hydrate and detangle, working your way from the ends to the roots,” says Sabrina Porsche, celebrity hairstylist on the Kristin Ess Hair Artistry Team.

Treat

Jose recommends that every curly hair routine incorporate a scalp serum “to promote balance and healthy growth.” To lock in moisture, she also recommends adding a hydrating hair mask for deep nourishment, or a leave-in conditioner straight out of the shower.

Dry

Most curly hair routines combine drying and styling as one step, with the products and techniques working together to maximize curl shape and definition as the hair dries. Instead of a regular towel, which causes friction against the hair which can lead to breakage and frizz, try a microfiber towel or even a T-shirt to remove excess water from your curls.

Jose says that using a diffuser can speed up dry-time and “help define curls and minimize frizz while drying.” But if you’d rather skip the heat, Porsche says you can also air-dry with a curl mousse, gel or curl cream (specific to your texture), and use hands-on techniques like scrunching to enhance your curls’ shape.

Which factors should you consider when crafting your curly hair routine?

Lots of individual considerations, including curl type, hair thickness, and time commitment will help determine the products and techniques you adopt in your custom curl routine. But experts say that catering one factor—which isn’t quite so obvious—can make a big difference in your results.

Porosity

“The first thing you should consider is your hair porosity, which determines how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture,” Jose says. Not sure what your porosity level is? You can do a quick ‘strand test’ to tell, Ona Diaz-Santin, the CEO of 5 Salon Spa, says: Float a clean strand of hair in a glass of water; if it sinks to the bottom, you have high-porosity hair; if the strand floats at the top, you have low-porosity hair; if it floats somewhere in the middle, you have medium-porosity hair.

Now, back to tailoring your curly hair routine: “If you have low porosity hair, you would use a lightweight based product and not too much heat,” says Porsche. “If you have medium prosody hair, your hair will most likely work with most products. If you have high porosity hair, you need to use heavier, oils, or cream based products to help contain frizz and locks in that moisture.”

What are some common curly hair routine mistakes?

Rushing the process

The golden rule of the curly hair routine is that you need to be patient with your curls in both the short and the long term. For starters, “you want your curl to be completely dry before heading out the door, for not only frizz protection but also for extended curl formation throughout the day,” says Jocelyn Smith, stylist and senior director of education at Ouidad Salon.

Long hours sitting at office causing back pain? Study suggests a simple routine that may bring relief

by jummy84 November 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Does your lower back cramp up after sitting for long hours at the office? Desk-bound jobs usually involve very long hours sitting in one position. So it is no surprise when the body eventually protests, showing up with complaints in different ways, including weight gain or a severe backache. Back pain is one of the most immediate effects of prolonged sitting. This leaves many wondering how often they should stand, and if there’s any specific interval that lowers the pain better.

Don’t let your back pain get worse. Know the signs.(Picture credit: Shutterstock)

ALSO READ: Spine surgeon warns Indians not to ignore back pain until it’s too late, reveals who all ‘should be extra careful’

A study published in the journal of Applied Ergonomics put all the guesswork to rest by suggesting an interval that may help ease back pain more for office workers.

What did the study find?

The researchers wanted to identify which sit-stand routine alleviates back pain. They compared two methods. The first one was a fixed routine where everyone followed the same rule of 30 minutes sitting and 15 minutes standing. The second was personalised, which determined the person, choosing their own timing based on when their back aches.

The results showed that those who followed the 30:15 routine had reduced back pain and reported better concentration, lower stress. However, when the study participants followed their personalised timings, the improvements were very slight.

At work, sit for 30 minutes and stand for 15 minutes. (Picture credit: Gemini)
At work, sit for 30 minutes and stand for 15 minutes. (Picture credit: Gemini)

What does 30:15 sit-stand routine mean?

As per the findings, sitting for 30 minutes and then standing for 15 minutes was found to provide more substantial benefits. You may try to customise your own sit-stand routine at work, but it may not be as effective. A personalised routine typically involves deciding your own intervals, based on personal convenience or work commitment. For example, standing up and going for a walk, only after your presentation deck is complete, or when your back aches.

But here’s the catch: you may be inconsistent when you decide your own sit-stand interval. But when you follow a fixed routine, i.e, sitting for 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes of standing, it removes your guesswork as well. You have a structured plan, and even the results are better.

Manucurist Founder Gaëlle Lebrat Personnaz Wants Your Nails to Have Their Own Skincare Routine

by jummy84 November 11, 2025

Flawless from head to toe! Manucurist founder Gaëlle Lebrat Personnaz wants you to treat your nails like your skin, and celebs like Jennifer Lopez, Hailey Bieber, Margot Robbie, and Gwyneth Paltrow have already gotten the memo.

Not only do the lacquers come in 90+ shades to complement every look, but the vegan, plant-based formulas also take a skincare first approach to nailcare with products that plump, brighten, smooth, and protect.

“Your nails are just as sensitive as your skin,” the CEO tells ET. “Like our skin, nails are exposed to environmental stress, lifestyle habits, and daily wear. You wouldn’t apply a glowing foundation to damaged skin, and the same logic applies here.”

Manucurist

When it comes to nailing the perfect mani, Personnaz says prep is key.

“Always file in one direction, soften cuticles with a drop of emollient, gently buff the surface, and clean the nail plate with a mild remover. Then, apply a thin base layer, two coats of color, and a topcoat.”

From there, use the Active treatment range for polishes that double as serums.

“You can wear them solo, but the real fun is in the layering. Apply one, two, or even three together to create different finishes, just like you would with your makeup routine. It’s nail care that plays like beauty.”

Manucurist

For extra shine, Personnaz reaches for the Green Flash collection for salon-level results or a trend-forward twist.

“I’m inspired by the worlds of fashion, design, art, and even travel. A nail color should spark emotion, just as a beautiful garment or a work of art would,” she shares.

Right now, it’s all about the reimagined French manicure with “micro, upside-down, multicolored and textured pearl, glazed, or glossy tips.”

Because for Personnaz, nails aren’t just an accessory, they’re a statement.

Manucurist

“A manicure is that little detail that changes everything. Like a great pair of shoes or a beautiful bag, it completes your look. Well-groomed nails show that you care about yourself and it gives your confidence,” she notes.

To maintain her mani, the businesswoman always keeps hydrating staples and handy tools close.

“I finish my face routine by applying the extra product to my hands and use the rose nouvelle balm to hydrate my cuticles, hands, and lips. I carry our gentle glass nail file, and whenever I travel, I bring the Complete Nail Serum with me. Before bed, I massage in some cuticle oil for soft hands by morning.”

Korean skincare routine: 10 steps to get glass-like glowing skin in every season

by jummy84 November 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Korean Beauty, or K-Beauty as we know it, has been taking the global skincare by storm. Known for giving users a ‘glass skin’ look, the Korean skincare routine emphasises on hydration, nourishment, and consistency rather than quick fixes. If you’ve ever wondered how Koreans maintain their glowing, youthful skin, the secret lies in their 10-step skincare routine.

10 step Korean skincare routine for glowing skin(Freepik)

Korean skincare routine

While it may seem lengthy, each step serves a purpose in transforming dull skin into a luminous masterpiece. Let’s dive into this world of self-care and discover the 10 essential steps to glass-like glow.

1. Use an oil-based cleanser that melts away impurities

The first step in the Korean skincare routine is double cleansing, beginning with an oil-based cleanser. This step removes makeup, sunscreen, excess sebum, and oil-based impurities that water alone cannot dissolve.

Massage the cleanser gently onto your skin in circular motions to lift dirt and grime. Then rinse with lukewarm water. Popular choices include cleansing balms or micellar oils infused with ingredients like green tea, rice bran, or camellia oil.

Why it matters: It ensures a clean slate without stripping the skin’s natural moisture barrier, preparing it for deeper cleansing.

2. Water-based cleanser: Wash away sweat and residue

The second cleansing step in this skincare routine involves a foaming or gel cleanser to remove water-based impurities such as sweat and dirt. This ensures your pores are completely free of residue from the day.

Look for pH-balanced formulas that are gentle on the skin, avoiding harsh sulphates. Ingredients like centella asiatica, snail mucin, or tea tree extract can help soothe and purify the skin.

Why it matters: Double cleansing helps prevent breakouts and maintains skin clarity by ensuring no impurities linger.

3. Exfoliator: Polish away dead skin cells

Exfoliation is crucial but should be done only two to three times a week. This step helps remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, promoting a smoother and brighter texture. Choose between chemical exfoliants (like AHA, BHA, or PHA) for gentle resurfacing or physical exfoliants with fine particles for a mild scrub effect.

Why it matters: Regular exfoliation allows skincare products to penetrate more effectively, revealing fresh, glowing skin.

4. Toner: Balance and prep the skin

Toners in K-beauty are not harsh alcohol-based astringents, but hydrating preps that balance the skin’s pH and replenish moisture. They act as the first layer of hydration after cleansing and help the skin absorb the following products more efficiently. Use a hydrating toner with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, rose water, or bamboo extract.

Why it matters: A good toner restores balance and creates the perfect base for layering skincare.

5. Essence: The heart of Korean skincare

Essence is the soul of Korean beauty rituals. These combine the lightweight feel of a toner with the concentrated benefits of a serum. Packed with nourishing and hydrating ingredients, essences promote cell turnover and skin repair. Apply it by patting gently with your palms, not rubbing.

Why it matters: It provides deep hydration and enhances the overall glow, making skin plumper and more radiant.

6. Serum or ampoule: Target specific concerns

Serums and ampoules deliver highly concentrated active ingredients to address particular issues such as acne, pigmentation, dullness, or wrinkles. For glass-like skin, choose serums enriched with niacinamide, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, or snail mucin. These ingredients help brighten and smooth the complexion over time.

Why it matters: This step delivers the most potent nutrients directly into your skin cells for visible results.

7. Sheet mask – Indulge in intensive hydration

K-beauty’s iconic sheet masks are more than just a pampering treat, they are a hydration powerhouse. These single-use masks are soaked in nutrient-rich essence that penetrates deeply into the skin. Use it once a week, and leave it on for 15–20 minutes for maximum absorption.

Why it matters: Sheet masks flood the skin with moisture, leaving it supple, refreshed, and luminous.

8. Eye cream: Nourish the delicate under-eye area

The skin around the eyes is thin and prone to fine lines and puffiness. Applying a light yet nourishing eye cream keeps this area firm and hydrated. Look for ingredients like peptides, collagen, and caffeine to brighten dark circles and smooth wrinkles.

Why it matters: It prevents early signs of ageing and ensures your eyes look as radiant as the rest of your face.

9. Moisturiser: Lock in all the goodness

No skincare routine is complete without a moisturiser to seal in all the hydration and nutrients from previous steps. Choose a texture that suits your skin type, gel-based for oily skin, cream-based for dry skin, or emulsion-type for combination skin. Ingredients like ceramides, green tea, or squalene help strengthen the skin barrier.

Why it matters: Moisturiser locks everything in, ensuring long-lasting hydration and a smooth, soft finish.

10. Sunscreen: The ultimate protection

The final and most crucial step, sunscreen. Even the most luxurious skincare routine won’t matter if you skip this step. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, even on cloudy days or when indoors. Korean sunscreens are famous for being lightweight, non-greasy, and perfect for daily wear.

Why it matters: Sunscreen prevents premature ageing, pigmentation, and sun damage, maintaining your glass-like glow for the long term.

Final Thoughts

The 10-step Korean skincare routine isn’t just about layering products, it’s a ritual of self-love and consistency. While it might seem extensive, you don’t have to do all ten steps every day. The key is to listen to your skin and adjust accordingly.

The Secret Ingredient Your Skincare Routine is Missing

The Secret Ingredient Your Skincare Routine is Missing

by jummy84 November 4, 2025
written by jummy84

If you’ve ever struggled with acne, you know it can feel like an undertaking trying to find the right ingredients for your skin—especially if it’s also extremely sensitive. To be perfectly honest, it took me years (and connecting with the right aesthetician) to figure out what ingredients worked for my sensitive, breakout-prone skin, but once I found the right routine, my whole life changed.

For a long time, I struggled after tretinoin seriously damaged my skin barrier. My skin became extra dehydrated, red, and prone to acne after that, and I found it frustrating trying to find ingredients that didn’t make it worse. The ingredient that really turned things around for me, though, was beta-glucan. While you may have seen this ingredient pop up in a formula or two in your routine, I still feel that it doesn’t get the spotlight that it deserves. It’s truly fantastic for dehydrated, damaged, acne-prone, and barrier-damaged skin because it’s known for its skin-healing properties.

My aesthetician Sonia Vargas is a huge fan of it and told me it was worth adding to my lineup because it accelerates wound healing and tissue repair. It sounded like exactly what I needed at the time. My skin has taken a huge turn for the positive since I started using it regularly four months ago. For everything you need to know about why this powerhouse ingredient should be on your shelf, straight from the experts, keep on reading.

What is Beta-Glucan?

Vargas explained that beta-glucan is a polysaccharide (made up of sugar molecules) derived from sources like oats, yeast, and fungi. “[They] benefit all skin types,” she says. “It’s good for all skin because it provides deep hydration, strengthens the skin’s moisture barrier, and has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties. This combination makes it excellent for soothing irritation and protecting the skin from environmental damage.”

Keep in mind, beta-glucan may not be the best ingredient for you if you deal with fungal acne, but if your breakouts are not fungal, it can be an amazing assistant when you’re in the process of clearing up your skin. Although it’s helpful for breakouts, it’s also generally great for skin that’s dry or dehydrated because provides moisture without being overly heavy on the skin.

Why Should You Add Beta-Glucan to Your Routine?

Plastic surgeon and founder of Asian Pacific Plastic Surgery Shim Ching, MD confirms that beta-glucan is a superhero when it comes to traumatized skin. “Most of the research around beta-glucans have been around how they help heal damaged skin,” he says. “We’re theorizing that they can help other skin problems by reducing inflammation, hydrating the skin, repairing the skin barrier and boosting the skin’s immune system.” Ching is referring to the fact that beta-glucan is known to stimulate the Langerhans cells—the immune cells within the skin’s epidermis layer. This initiates its immune and reparative functions.

Not only that, beta-glucan is really helpful for treating traumatized skin (like tretinoin damage), abrasions, damage, burns, oxidative stress, premature aging, acne, inflammation, and even calming rosacea. Basically, it does it all and everyone could benefit from adding it to their routine. Ching also suggests taking beta-glucan as a dietary supplement to get the full list of benefits. Beta-glucans can be found in oats, barley, wheat, rye, and certain mushrooms like shitake, maitake, and reishi.

If you struggle with breakouts, though, Vargas says it’s especially key. “Beta-glucan is an essential ingredient for acne-prone skin because it targets multiple issues that contribute to breakouts, including inflammation, a compromised skin barrier, and impaired healing,” she explains. “Traditional acne treatments can be harsh—beta-glucan is gentle and non-irritating, making it a safe choice for inflamed and impaired skin.”

Vargas knew beta-glucan would be perfect for my skin because I struggled with all of the above. It was tough to find ingredients that would clear my breakouts without causing more irritation and barrier damage. What truly helped was stopping all retinoids, exfoliating less, and giving my skin the time it needed to reset and heal. Adding DMK’s signature Beta Gel formula on top of that was the key to my success. Vargas recommended it to me and I haven’t looked back since.

The Best Products With Beta-Glucan

Beta Gel

Vargas recommended I try DMK’s signature beta gel formula because it’s designed to address reactive, chronically irritated, or traumatized skin. After I started using this, my skin totally changed. It wasn’t as red, reactive, or sensitive, and I was breaking out a lot less. I couldn’t believe the difference after just a few short months. It really goes to show that a skin reset is necessary sometimes—a.k.a., stopping all strong actives for a period of time (exfoliants and retinoids). DMK is an incredible brand (truly one of my all time favorites on the market), but it’s only available through an aesthetician. If you’re in the L.A. area, Vargas is amazing to chat with or you can go for celebrity facialist Candace Marino who is also a favorite and DMK therapist in the area. DMK also has a handy tool on their website to help you locate a practitioner near you.

Gut health expert reveals 3 supplements that support his fitness routine: From prebiotics to protein powder

by jummy84 October 24, 2025
written by jummy84

Maintaining good gut health is important for fitness as it affects how well we perform and recover from workouts. Recent research published in the journal Medicine in Microecology shows how a balanced gut microbiome plays a key role in our health. What we eat greatly influences our fitness results. Gut health expert Dr Arpit Bansal recommends adding prebiotics, probiotics, and protein shakes to diets to boost physical endurance and overall well-being. He says focusing on gut health can help to reach peak performance and support long-term vitality in our fitness journeys.

Which is better for gut health, prebiotics or probiotics?(Adobe Stock)

Prebiotics vs probiotics vs protein shakes

“As a gut health specialist and surgeon who lives the fitness journey every day, I often get questions about what helps with performance and longevity: prebiotics, probiotics, or protein shakes. The answer is that it’s not about choosing one over the others. It is about finding a good balance among them,” Dr Arpit Bansal, Gut Health and Longevity Specialist, tells Health Shots. He explains some common misunderstandings about these supplements:

Protein shakes

Protein shakes are made of protein powder. When you choose shakes without added sugars or preservatives, they can be a great source of amino acids. These amino acids help with muscle repair, recovery, and stamina, which is important for someone like me who works out, runs, and stays active. “I use protein shakes to help my nutrition, but they are not a substitute for whole foods”, he explains.

Prebiotics and probiotics

“Fitness is often linked to muscle health, but gut health is just as important. I like to think of the gut as a thriving internal rainforest that needs a variety of plants to stay healthy,” says Dr Bansal.

  • Probiotics are good live bacteria found in foods like yoghurt, kefir, and other fermented foods. They add helpful strains to your gut microbiome and support a healthy digestive system.
  • Prebiotics are foods that help good bacteria in your gut grow. They are found in fibre-rich foods like garlic, onions, bananas, asparagus, and oats. Eating these foods ensures that beneficial bacteria in your gut thrive.

When your gut microbiome is balanced and diverse, it helps you in many ways beyond just better digestion. A healthy microbiome improves how you absorb nutrients, speeds up recovery, reduces inflammation, and even boosts brain function. This balance distinguishes between just training hard and actually feeling energised and strong.

Doctor shares his daily habits for gut health

  • Post-workout nutrition: “After my workouts, I usually have a protein shake, sometimes adding fibre or seeds. This helps my muscles recover and gives extra nutrition to my gut,” shares Dr Bansal.
  • Fermented foods: “Every day, I make an effort to include different fermented foods in my meals. Foods like yoghurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut are important staples that add helpful probiotics to my diet”, he notes.
  • Fruits and vegetable: “I eat a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables that are high in prebiotic fibres. This variety gives my gut different types of nourishment, which helps keep my gut bacteria healthy and diverse,” he explains.

Besides this, he underlines the importance of listening to one’s body. Symptoms like bloating, fatigue, or discomfort are signs that I need to pay attention to my health. I often adjust my diet or routine based on these signals,” he adds.

Dr Bansal also does not ignore the connection between muscles, microbes, and mind. He sums up: “Protein shakes help me recover after workouts. They replace what I lose and give me the energy I need for intense exercise. Probiotics and prebiotics are important for my gut health. They help improve my overall well-being and support my mental clarity.”

Benefits of balancing prebiotics, probiotics, and protein

Let’s look at the main benefits of adding prebiotics, probiotics, and protein shakes to your daily routine:

  • Enhanced recovery: Protein shakes help repair muscles and speed up recovery after exercise. This allows you to train consistently.
  • Improved digestion: A healthy gut helps you digest food better and absorb nutrients more effectively. When you support your gut with prebiotics and probiotics, you can feel more energetic and more nutritious.
  • Decreased inflammation: Both probiotics and healthy food choices can help lower inflammation in the body. This is important for living a long and healthy life.
  • Mental clarity: A healthy gut can improve your mood and enhance your cognitive function. This helps you focus better and feel more positive about life.
  • Overall well-being: When balanced, this combination of nutrients helps your immune system stay healthy, keeps your hormones in balance, and makes it easier for you to handle stress.

Allison McNamara of MARA Is the Real-Life Ariel From ‘The Little Mermaid’ With an Algae-Powered Beauty Routine

Under the sea! MARA Beauty founder Allison McNamara might as well be the real-life Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Like the beloved Disney princess, McNamara is known for her fiery red hair, ocean-blue eyes, glowing skin, and sea-inspired rituals.

The main difference? Her self-care routine is far more sophisticated than detangling hair with a fork.

Instead, the beauty entrepreneur swears by nutrient-rich marine ingredients, including her brand’s proprietary algae sourced from France and Ireland, to achieve her signature glow from the inside out.

Allison McNamara/Instagram

“Algae is arguably the most resilient plant on Earth. It survives the harshest weather conditions, uses sunlight as its sole energy source, and sits at the center of the marine ecosystem, balancing carbon, absorbing toxins, and serving as the basis of the aquatic food chain,” McNamara explains.

And on land, it does the same for your skin.

“There’s an undeniable radiance you get from using our products,” she says. “Our multi-functional formulas help hydrate, firm, smooth, and brighten.”

Celebs like Hailey Bieber, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chrissy Teigen, Riley Keough, Hailee Steinfeld, and Olivia Munn seem to agree, al stocking their shelves with the Algae Cleansing Oil, SeaDream Algae Cream, Sea Silk Lip Balm, and Algae Retinol Face Oil.

Beyond consistent use of her product line, McNamara satisfies her algae cravings through her diet as well.

“I never turn down a sushi night, and when cooking, I use the Algae Cooking Club oil because it has a high burn point, which makes it healthier and more effective for stove-top cooking,” she shares.

Even on the go, she sneaks the super-plant into snacks, smoothies, and water.

“I recently began baking cottage cheese on top of dried nori seaweed and it’s delicious,” she says. “I also love adding spirulina to my smoothies and frequently reach for Juna chlorophyll drops to add into my water, especially when I’m feeling bloated or need a detox.”

But when it’s time to truly unplug, the California native naturally opts for a seaside getaway, and she’s never without her travel-sized treasures.

Allison McNamara/Instagram

“Our Mini MARA Set has everything your skin needs to stay healthy and glowing from the plane to the beach, including our Sea Kale Sunscreen Serum for lazy, no-makeup makeup days.”

As for her mermaid-inspired vacation style: “I pack Toteme sandals, a cute Elce set that can be styled up or down, my favorite white tank and fitted dress from Clyque the Label, and Luv AJ’s new Sunset Stone collection in green,” she spills.

Mallika Sherawat’s intense workout routine

On September 17, Mallika took to Instagram to share a video of her workout, captioning it, “There are no shortcuts to health, nothing replaces the power of regular exercise and consistency.” Dressed in a black tank top and tights, she showcases a series of exercises at the gym.

Here’s a closer look at her workout routine:

Mallika’s workout routine includes a mix of strength and cardio exercises that target multiple muscle groups. She starts with cycling, which helps boost her stamina, improves cardiovascular health, and warms up the body for more intensive exercises. She then moves on to leg curls, focusing on strengthening her hamstrings and lower body, which is essential for maintaining toned and strong legs.

Another key part of her session is the rope pull, an upper-body workout that engages her arms, shoulders, and back, while also enhancing grip strength and endurance. Together, these exercises form a balanced routine that keeps her fit, agile, and energised.

How she practises wellness beyond gym

Mallika is quite active on Instagram and often shares glimpses of her fitness and wellness routines with her followers. In her July 28 post, she was seen enjoying an acupuncture and sound healing session to unwind and release the stress of the past week.

She captioned the post, “Weekend Reset: acupuncture coupled with Sound healing is my ultimate self-care ritual” along with a head massage and sparkles emoji, giving fans a peek into her holistic approach to wellness beyond just workouts.

Best Multipurpose Beauty Products to Streamline Your Routine

by jummy84 September 1, 2025
written by jummy84

As I was having a clear-out of my beauty products the other week, it occurred to me that some of the best products in my routine tend to be multi-purpose beauty products. As a beauty editor, I’m lucky enough to try and test lots of new beauty products for my job, but it’s often the multi-tasking products that end up having a permanent spot in my rotation.

Not only can multi-purpose beauty products streamline your routine, but they can also save you time and money. A complexion product that replaces both my concealer and foundation? Yes please. A chic cream blusher stick I can wear on my eyes, lips and cheeks? I’ll take two. And if I can also use a body oil in my hair, I want to know about it. And just as some of the most successful people in the world have a daily uniform that streamlines their day, multi-purpose beauty products work in the same way. They’re dependable, adaptable to different situations and can often save you time and energy in your day-to-day routine. Not to mention, they save on precious space on your bathroom shelf and in your makeup bag.

So, I decided to round up some of my favourite multi-purpose beauty products that editors love. Scroll on for our tried-and-tested favourites that will quickly become a staple in your beauty routine, too.

Best Multi-Purpose Beauty Products

1. Got2b Glued 2-in-1 Gel

Schwarzkopf got2b 2-in-1 gel

No slicked-back bun is ever complete without this brilliant hair gel wand, which features Got2b’s iconic Glued formula. It effortlessly coaxes flyaways and edges into place with all-day hold. Trust me, once you’ve laid down the hair, it won’t be going anywhere. But what makes it so brilliant is that it can also be used as a brow gel to lock in a fluffy look that stays put. And with it coming in at just £6, this is one of the most affordable multi-purpose beauty products out there.

2. Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Multi Purpose Dry Oil

Nuxe

Huile Prodigieuse Multi Purpose Dry Oil

Nuxe is a French pharmacy skincare staple, but its hero product just so happens to be a brilliant multitasker. Firstly, it’s a dry oil, which works as a brilliant, non-sticky body oil that leaves a beautiful gleam on your limbs. Secondly, it can also be used as a lightweight hair oil to bestow a healthy shine upon your lengths without a hint of stickiness. Because it’s so light, it even works as a featherlight facial oil, whether it be for facial massage or locking in moisture. With it being Nuxe, of course, it smells impossibly chic (think expensive French suncream), so you’ll be left with a scent wherever you apply it. Thought that was it? If you opt for the shimmer version, it works as a bronzy body highlighter too.

3. Make Up For Ever Artist Color Pencils

MAKE UP FOR EVER

You may have spotted Hailey Bieber and countless celebrity MUAs using this Makeup For Ever lip pencil on your feeds. But did you know that these pencils were actually designed to be used as a blush, lip liner and even an eyeliner? They’re creamy enough to scribble on everywhere (à la Emily Wood’s TikTok-viral video) to give you a hint of colour wherever you wish. My recommendations are Anywhere Caffeine (a muted beige-pink) and Endless Cocoa (a mid-brown shade), which are both neutral enough to be used anywhere.

4. By Terry Hyaluronic Serum Concealer

Hyaluronic Serum Concealer

While the shade range could be better, this French concealer has won over our beauty desk for its multi-purpose magic. “Whenever I tell people I don’t wear foundation, a skin tint or a tinted moisturiser, their reaction is always the same: I could never dream of that. The truth is, if I can get away with it, everyone can,” says Who What Wear UK beauty director, Shannon Lawlor. “My skin is far from perfect. It has scarring, active acne breakouts and texture galore. The reason I don’t like wearing an all-over base is multi-fold. 1. I don’t have the patience to blend it out every day. 2. I like my face to look as natural as possible. 3. I can’t stand the way foundation transfers onto everything I touch. So, over the years, I have trained myself in the art of masterful concealer application—and in order to make this work, the power of a multi-purpose, creamy concealer cannot be overlooked,” she says. “This particular formula is, without question, the best ever made. I generously swipe it under my eyes, around my nose and, more or less, all over my chin, and I dab a little onto specific blemishes. I leave it to settle for about 20 seconds and then smoosh it all in with my finger. It evens out texture and tone, gives my skin a dewy glow that doesn’t look oily, brightens up dull areas and conceals spots in a flash. This little tube is my hero makeup product, and I can’t bear the thought of being without it. Concealer, base, highlighter, all-round glow-giver—it does it all.”

5. Rhode Glazing Milk

Glazing Milk — Big (4.2 Oz)

Rhode’s Glazing Milk may be my favourite from all of its skincare. This milky essence adds a splash of skin-soothing, lightweight hydration before going in with serums and moisturisers. But another way I love to use it comes from founder Hailey Bieber herself. In several of her TikTok videos, she uses her Glazing Milk to sheer out her foundation or skin tint, making it a helpful way to dial down the opacity of your base products if they feel too heavy. It also makes your skin incredibly glowy and dewy—if I could bathe in it, I probably would.

6. Weleda Skin Food

Weleda Skin Food 75ml

This is one of those skincare products that I forever see in makeup artist kit bags backstage at London Fashion Week, and you can use it almost everywhere. It has a rich, buttery texture with a tonne of botanical extracts that cosset the skin, leaving it feeling plumped a hydrated. Because it’s so thick, it’s better suited for dry skin or mature complexions (acne-prone or oily skin types, you’ll want to avoid using it on your face), and a little really does go a long way. However, it also makes a brilliant body moisturiser, cracked heel balm and hand cream as the colder weather creeps in.

7. Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush Stick

Baby Cheeks Blush Stick

“Westman Atelier’s Baby Cheeks Blush Stick is one of my favourite cream blushers of all time,” says junior beauty editor, Grace Lindsay. “I use the shade ‘Petal’, which is the perfect everyday pink to add a subtle flush of colour to the skin. I love it so much that I also use the product on both my eyes and lips. The creamy formula is easy to swipe onto the eyelids to help make my eyes pop, and I like layering it under a clear gloss on the lips to tie my entire makeup look together,” she says. “This product is more expensive than your typical cream blush, but the fact that I can do so much of my makeup routine with it makes it a worthwhile investment.”

8. La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+

La Roche-Posay

Cicaplast Balm B5 Multi-Purpose Repairing Balm

I consider La Roche-Posay’s Cicaplast Baume B5+ as the skincare version of a first aid kit. This healing creamy balm has so many uses. Originally developed to calm, repair, and comfort stressed or irritated skin, it’s become a go-to that dermatologists frequently recommend for a wide range of skin concerns. The formula blends prebiotics with zinc and manganese—both known for their antibacterial properties—to help accelerate the skin’s natural recovery. It’s just as good for cuts and scrapes as it is for repairing sensitised skin. Its rich, soothing texture forms a protective barrier, giving skin the best chance to heal. Plus, it’s fragrance-free and hypoallergenic, making it especially well-suited for even the most sensitive skin types. More recently, creators on TikTok have taken to using it as an overnight mask for glass-like skin come morning, or even as a treatment to reduce the look of sebaceous filaments on the nose.

9. Aquaphor Healing Ointment

Aquaphor Healing Ointment

Is it sexy? No. But does it work? Hell yes. Aquaphor’s ointment is one of those multi-tasking products that everyone ought to own. It’s a brilliant lip balm for when lips are cracked and sore, a healing ointment for cuts and scrapes, and some even like to use it as part of their nighttime routine to seal in moisture on parched complexions. When I recently had a CO2 laser treatment for acne scarring, it was also recommended to me as a healing post-procedure aftercare balm. Whenever I interview celebrities on their beauty routines, I always make a point of asking them what their favourite drugstore product under £10 is, and they almost all say this.

10. Merit The Minimalist

The Minimalist

It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of Merit here at Who What Wear UK, and this is one of their best products that just so happens to be a great multi-purpose beauty product. It’s both a lightweight foundation stick with a natural-matte finish, but it also doubles as a concealer with its ballpoint pen-style nib that is nimble enough to conceal around the chin and nose. It’s a real space-saver in your makeup bag! The brand also recommends it for contouring if you go one or two shades darker.

11. Chanel Baume Essentiel

Chanel Baume Essentiel 8g

Beauty editors collectively agree that this is one of the best makeup products ever created. It’s a sheer, glossy highlighter, which imparts a dewy gleam to cheekbones that makes you look like you spent a weekend at a luxury spa retreat. But, it can also be used to highlight the cupid’s bow, the bridge of the nose, or even the decolletage and limbs to bring a glow to the rest of your body. The stick formula makes it so easy to swipe on anywhere. It comes in a few different shades, from sheer pink to tinted bronze, but also a totally transparent shade that gives a natural-looking glow.

12. Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter 1 Fair

Charlotte Tilbury

Hollywood Flawless Filter

The Hollywood Flawless Filter was really a pioneer when it launched. In a world of foundations, primers and highlighters, this somehow managed to singlehandedly replace all three in our makeup routine. The sheer tint offers natural-looking coverage, while the dewy finish gives your skin a glass-like effect of someone who religiously drinks matcha lattes and has regular facials. Honestly, the glow is unmatched. But what’s so great is that it looks beautiful worn alone, or you can wear it underneath foundation as a primer for a glow-boost. Additionally, it can be mixed into your base makeup or applied on top as a highlighter. What a hard worker.

13. Beauty of Joseon Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen SPF30 PA+++

Beauty of Joseon

Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen SPF30 PA+++

It’s hard to find a good SPF that also doubles as a skin tint, but this tinted sunscreen is a new favourite of mine that ticks two boxes in my routine. It’s ultra lightweight and silky in texture, delivering a hint of coverage to the skin, which is enough to even out your complexion. It dries down to a velvety touch and doesn’t budge—even on my oily skin. They say the best SPF is the one you want to wear every day, and this one just so happens to be a great skin tint too—it’s a win-win.
