Netflix’s ‘Death By Lightning’ Director Matt Ross Interview

by jummy84 November 13, 2025
written by jummy84

[Editor’s note: This interview contains spoilers for “Death by Lightning.”]

We all only have one wild and precious life to live, and while James A. Garfield couldn’t spend any of his watching a Netflix miniseries, director Matt Ross wants any story we do spend two or four or 10 hours on to be worth it. Ross immediately knew he’d found such a story on reading Mike Makowsky’s script for “Death by Lightning,” which follows both Garfield (Michael Shannon) and his eventual assassin Charles Guiteau (Matthew Macfadyen) from the former’s surprise nomination for President at the 1880 Republican National Convention through the latter’s hanging for murder. He wanted to take on the challenge of making the visual storytelling feel as immediate, surprising, and modern as Makowsky’s script read.

Poker Face

Much of that work, Ross told IndieWire, has nothing to do with the cinematic apparatus itself. “I want to be taken away and not the whole time think, ‘Oh, great shot. Oh, that’s an interesting costume choice. Oh, why did they choose to shoot it that way?’” Ross said. “I want to have an intellectual and emotional response.”

The intellectual and emotional response to “Death by Lightning,” for Ross, is all wrapped up in people — and in picnic tables. “[The script] wasn’t a history lesson. It was through the prism of these two men who I think represented very polar opposites of a desire for legacy — a thing men probably, historically, had more of a desire for because of women’s lack of agency in patriarchal societies, right? There’s this desire to matter,” Ross said. “The meaning of the entire thing is the last scene with Crete [Betty Gilpin] and her children… These two men are left with nothing. They’re both dead. The actual legacy is our friends and our family — the love we share, the people we connect with while we’re alive.”

Ross’s task for “Death by Lightning,” then, was to realize a group of people and make their surprising complexity be the thing that matters far more than any turn of the plot — which is, after all, just a Wikipedia article away. Knowing that thematic idea is the destination the series is driving toward allowed Ross to build a team and direct accordingly.

When thinking about Garfield and Guiteau, Ross wanted to bring on actors who could flex new sides of themselves and slightly play with an audience’s expectation of their personas. It is a testament to Matthew Macfadyen’s acting chops (and awful haircut) that you really do believe no one in the Oneida free love commune to which Guiteau belonged for five years wants to have sex with Mr. Darcy. Michael Shannon has a history of playing, shall we say, rather intense individuals; “Death by Lightning” was a chance for him to embody much more of a Clark Kent than a General Zod.

“ I try and cast, personally, the same way one casts in theater — which is to say, you’re assuming that this person can do anything. So what have they not done recently that might be fun for them to do, you know?” Ross said. “Then it just becomes a conversation of how you illuminate the humanity of the characters, because for me, I didn’t want Garfield to be a one-note good guy. I wanted him to be grumpy and complicated and angry at times, frustrated, and have his own maybe nascent ambitions.”

Ross gives full credit to the actors — “I learned like 35 years ago, and it’s true, that there’s a misconception about an actor/director relationship that somehow a director is getting something from an actor. I think that’s a negation of an actor’s talent. I don’t get anything from them that they don’t want to give me,” Ross said. There’s only the work of collaborating on the right levels on the day, trying something a little more or a little less, or experimenting with different eyes, and there is the small, invisible work that Ross does behind the camera to properly focus the audience on an actor’s performance.

An example of this is the scene where Guiteau is hanged for Garfield’s assassination. The setup is quite simple. We follow Guiteau across the prison yard from the front (the better to see the poem he has written for the grand occasion) and behind, two other views of the crowd (spotty) and the gallows (simple). Once on the gallows, Ross mostly sticks to a pretty straight-on medium closeup of Guiteau as the noose is put around his neck. We get the most devastatingly silent “Wow, is this thing on?” reaction shot from the observers after Guiteau sings “I’m Going to the Lordy” and laughs, thrilled at his own handiwork. It’s all perfectly serviceable, invisible filmmaking.

Then just as simply and invisibly, Ross tightens the visual noose. The camera slowly pushes in on Guiteau’s face as he absorbs the silence, and lets out an “Oh” so horrified you can almost hear the italics. “We thought that would be powerful,” Ross said. “Matthew and I talked about what that would be — I mean, here’s a man who was in prison for murder and he was writing a manifesto and trying to solicit a wife and all this craziness, and he thought it would change everything and that he would be saved and loved and he was making jokes on the way to the gallows, but… would it not be profound for this man, if at the very last moment, he realizes his insignificance.”

A dance between performer and camera like that one requires a clear, shared vision for the emotional intent of a scene, a willingness to play and experiment, and trust that the story is, in fact, worth the four hours. “I could spend an hour discussing what each actor brought, whether it’s, you know, the emotional power that Betty brings or Nick [Offerman, or Shea Wigham], but with each person, I just want to illuminate them and their work. We’re only as good as the people with whom we play, and they all brought their A game and were so willing to explore and to try to push the characters in different ways.”

“Death by Lightning” is now streaming on Netflix.

Diana Ross remains the ultimate diva, entrancing her beloved audience during her most recent Beautiful Love Tour stop in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Taking over Ocean Casino Resort’s Ovation Hall Saturday (Oct. 25), the “Queen Of Motown” brought Hollywood glamour, New York elegance, and Detroit charm to a sold-out crowd of adoring patrons, many of whom were heard covering the icons classic tunes as they bopped into the venue with spirited anticipation.

Clips of the legend’s rise to stardom and highlights of her illustrious career greeted the crowd as her band, back-up, and crew hit the stage, just ahead of Ross making her grand entrance to — you guessed it — “I’m Coming Out.” And did she ever, in an opulent orange gown and coat that screamed both fall and fierce!

Stage presence was on ten as she broke in and out of song on occasion to acknowledge fans, all while keeping the show moving at a smooth pace. With hits spanning over five decades, it would only make sense that many were cut short, but she still manages to touch on all the known classics while giving her more die-hard followers treats from projects like Lady Sings The Blues and The Wiz.

She’s also a beacon of gratitude, a refreshing trait in someone so accomplished. Sharing her own mantra with the crowd, highlighting her band several times throughout the night, bringing out daughter Rhonda for a sweet duet, these are the moments when you realize why she’s been in the business for so long. It’s not just the obvious talent and beauty, but an understanding of how community, collective care and humility will keep one sane enough to withstand the storms, even while living in your gift and dismissing the nonsense. It radiated through her smile the entire evening, mirroring the brilliance of the fab fashions she quick-changed into and out of throughout the night.

The evening was thee highlight of a weekend spent on the luxe boardwalk resort venue, that boasts acts ranging from Ross and Smokey Robinson to John Legend and Lenny Kravitz. Catch Ross in a city near you here and check out what Ovation Hall has to offer at Ocean Casino Resort.

Rick Ross Lists Lavish $6.5 Million Florida Mansion For Sale + Features Soundproof Theater, Nine-Car Garage & More

Rick Ross is ready to cash out on one of his most luxurious properties. The Miami rapper has officially listed his stunning South Florida mansion for $6.5 million, giving fans a glimpse into his boss-level lifestyle.

Located in Southwest Ranches, Florida, the 14,000-square-foot property includes six bedrooms, six and a half bathrooms, and sits on 2.3 acres in the exclusive Landmark Ranch Estates neighborhood.

The home boasts marble floors, soaring ceilings, a private driveway, a resort-style pool, a custom bar, a soundproof theater, two offices, and even a nine-car garage. The primary suite is a showstopper, with “a custom one-of-a-kind closet, sitting area, bonus room and spa-inspired bath,” according to the listing.

Rozay bought the property from former NBA star Amar’e Stoudemire in 2021 for $3.5 million cash and made major upgrades, including a massive double-R logo driveway and a new roof. He still owns his 322-acre Georgia estate, “The Promise Land.”

Would you drop $6.5 million on Ross’ mega mansion?

Kate Carney aces, Ross King’s misstep and more from Week One of Strictly Come Dancing 2025

Karen Carney opened the series with a sparkling jive alongside Carlos Gu, landing 31 points and topping the leaderboard.

Strictly Come Dancing

Judges praised her sharp footwork and infectious energy, a performance that defied her footballing background and announced her as an early contender.

Ross King’s cha-cha-cha with Jowita Przystal fell flat, scoring just 10 points and drawing stinging critiques about timing and control.

While Motsi Mabuse urged patience, it was a sobering start for the broadcaster and left him near the bottom of the standings.

Other standouts emerge, and a rule change sparks intrigue

Lewis Cope impressed with a stylish routine, while Amber Davies – joining the lineup late – showed poise and potential.

Former footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink also surprised with a lively quickstep, demonstrating that sport and dance can mix on the Strictly floor.

This season introduces a significant shift in the judging panel’s dynamic. Shirley Ballas will no longer hold the permanent deciding vote in eliminations, with the responsibility now rotating between judges.

The change has already stirred debate and could prove decisive as the competition heats up.

Liam Payne’s Cousin Ross Harris Pays Tribute With Song ‘Bones’

by jummy84 September 2, 2025
written by jummy84

Ross Harris is honoring his cousin Liam Payne with a new song. On Sunday, the musician released “Bones,” a track he wrote in tribute to Payne about the difficulties of dealing with grief.

“I’ve been back and forth about releasing this song a dozen times. It’s the most personal thing I’ve ever written – which made the idea of releasing it absolutely terrifying,” Harris wrote on Instagram. “After my cousin passed on October 16th, writing this song (with the extremely talented Jordan Round) gave me an outlet for my grief.”

He added: “Eventually, I knew I had to get it out into the world – for myself, for Liam and for anyone who’s lost someone.”

Harris said he wanted to release the song as a “nice little birthday present” for Payne, who would’ve turned 32 on Friday, Aug. 29. “I still see us as young boys with the world at our feet trying to figure out how to trick our parents into letting us have a sleepover,” he wrote.

For the song’s artwork, Harris used a rose that Payne drew himself. In his post, Harris thanked Payne for “trying to teach me how to scribble a Rose.”

“This one’s for you, Liam. Even though you’re not here to hear it, maybe you’re listening somewhere,” Harris wrote.

Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy shared Harris’s Instagram post about the “beautiful song,” and said she was so proud of Harris for releasing it. “I just know Liam would LOVE this song,” she wrote. “He’s singing it from up there in heaven.”

Trending Stories

Cassidy also shared a touching letter to Payne on Friday, which would’ve been his birthday. “In your 31 years here on this earth, you brought so much joy, happiness and hope to so many- especially to me. I hope you know how brightly you still shine, even from up there,” Cassidy wrote. “I would give up years of my life just to give you a few more. I miss making memories with you. I miss having things to look forward to together.”

Payne died on Oct. 16, 2024, after falling from the balcony of a hotel room in Buenos Aires. Netflix recently released Building the Band, in which Liam served as a mentor for new groups in formation. He was honored on the show.

Rick Ross Can’t Get Enough Of Jazzma Kendrick’s Cooking Skills

The Shade Room snagged videos of Rick Ross and his bae Jazzma Kendrick enjoying some quality time. The footage shows the duo in the kitchen with Jazzma standing over a pot, chefing it up. The influencer whipped up some lasagna, and when she gave Rozay a lil’ taste, he nearly lost it over how fire it was. Jazzma just laughed as he told her, “I’m happy for you.” In another clip, Ricky basically demolished his plate, leaving no scraps, and went on to say, “it ain’t a secret, I’m going for round two! Right now!”

Jazzma had posted a fly shot of herself leaning against a car, and an IG user commented, “You’re so beautiful you deserve the world along with flowers lol.” Ross quickly replied the comment writing, “she gets it alllllll.” Internet detectives went into full investigation mode when they realized the car Jazzma posed in front of matched the whip Ross had been spotted in on social media. Tracee Ellis Ross’ Solo Traveling Taught Me That I’m My Own Best Travel Partner

by jummy84 August 21, 2025
written by jummy84

I just so happened to be taking my first solo trip at the same time as Tracee Ellis Ross’ new series Solo Traveling hit Roku. And it turned out to be divine timing.

A weeklong trip to Oaxaca City and Mexico City had been on my vision board for about two years. As an avid traveler, I’ve always loved Mexico. I became obsessed with everything I had heard about the culture, food and art of these two cities and found myself daydreaming about sipping a mezcalrita at a speakeasy and dancing with a belly full of the country’s finest tacos. iIt remained just a dream as I came up with excuses for why I couldn’t go just yet — I needed a decent amount of time off from work, a good chunk of disposable income, a snatched waist, and a great travel partner. The list was getting longer and longer. It wasn’t until I was at my absolute wit’s end and needed a vacation for my mental health’s sake that I realized that I’m my own best travel partner.

This is the thesis of Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross. Over the course of three episodes, Ross packs viewers in her carry-on as she takes us with her on solo trips to Marrakech, Morocco, Riviera Maya, Mexico and Marbella, Spain. The Girlfriends star is already known for her aspirational life approach, charismatic silliness and all-around majestic aura, but there was something very special about seeing Ross share her solo travel so intimately. Her awkward moments dining alone felt as resonant as the loneliness she’s honest about feeling.

I did exactly what the hell I wanted for eight days straight… It was healing.

But Ross underscores the curse of constantly waiting for a “perfect time” in your life to do the things you desire:“So much of what solo travel is about for me [is] not waiting for something in order to walk towards my life, in order to be in my life, in order to experience my life,” she said in Episode 1.

As a Black woman solo traveler, there are plenty of factors to take into account. I was heading to a country where I don’t know anyone and don’t speak the language. When I talked about my travel plans with friends and family, they’d tell me to “be careful” because of stories of travelers going missing or racism they experienced abroad. I nearly backed out of my trip until I recognized that if I let others project their fears onto me, I’ll still end up just dreaming about this trip instead of taking it.

So with only mild anxiety and a whole lot of wanderlust, I took a dream vacation by myself. My first stop was Oaxaca City, where I stayed at Grana BNB, a gorgeous former mansion turned bed and breakfast with amazing service in the state’s capital. During my visit, Oaxaca was celebrating La Guelaguetza, an annual festival that emphasizes communal reciprocity. And I truly felt their generosity. Daily performances, museums, parades and a hell of a lot of mezcal and mole (the region’s signature) kept me busy over the course of 4 days. On the third day, I visited Hierve el Agua for a grueling hike that was absolutely worth it to see one of only two petrified waterfalls in the world.

On Friday, I arrived at my accommodations at Hotel Volga for four days in Mexico City. I splurged a bit, treating myself to a more luxurious stay in the city. Located in the bustling Roma Norte, I ended up walking around the neighborhood a lot. I felt as if I was growing taller the more I explored. Even with it being the rainy season, I felt like this trip’s timing couldn’t have been better. From buying a ticket from a scalper at a Luchadores match to dining solo at the Michelin-starred Pujol, I moved around like the only one granting me permission was me. And that’s something I tend to forget at home as calendar invites and imagined responsibilities take control.

We deserve a life full of wonder, rest, joy and vulnerability. And we deserve to know that the world is our oyster regardless of who is or isn’t on life’s journey with us.

My trip felt like jazz. Impromptu, soulful, vibrant and exploratory. I did exactly what the hell I wanted for eight days straight and sometimes that was nothing. It was healing. As Black women, we’re constantly checking on others, nurturing our communities and playing maternal roles regardless of if we choose to have children of our own or not. It’s overly draining.

Ross dropped so many gems in her show. But what stood out to me the most was how much the show uses silence to underscore Ross’ time to herself. I found myself sitting in silence a lot. I often opted for the room’s AC or rainfall over my headphones. I relished in the quiet. But I also found myself a bit anxious because of it until I got used to it. Then I realized those were the same moments that I was going deeper into myself in ways I couldn’t access without travel.

At 33, I’ve had to get real about what my biggest fears actually are. Nowhere on that list is getting lost, hurting myself in another country or getting racist stares. What I fear most is regret that I let anxieties stop me from living the life my heart desires.

“I’m responsible for my own happiness,” Ross said in the show. Black women must remember that for our own sake. We deserve a life full of wonder, rest, joy and vulnerability. And we deserve to know that the world is our oyster regardless of who is or isn’t on life’s journey with us.

Though this was my first international solo trip, it won’t be my last. And with Solo Traveling now renewed for a second season, I hope more of us find the courage to stop waiting for others and see that we’re our own best travel buddy.

Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?

Drake and Adin Ross to cover funeral costs of Kick streamer who died mid-livestream after “10 days of torture”

by jummy84 August 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Drake and Adin Ross are reportedly going to be covering the funeral costs of a Kick streamer who died during a livestream.

The streamer in question was 46-year-old Raphaël Graven, was was found dead at a home near Nice, France on August 18. He was best known by the moniker Jean Pormanove, and was said to have been in the middle of a 10-day streaming marathon when he passed.

Authorities in France have confirmed that there will be an investigation into his death due to claims that he had faced “humiliation” and “mistreatment” during the livestream. Various French outlets have also claimed that Graven had been subjected to sleep deprivation, violence and the “ingestion of toxic products” during the 10 day livestream, while people watched live.

News outlet Nexta claims that the livestream saw him “beaten, choked, and sprayed with paint for donations”. It is understood that he died in his sleep while the livestream continued.

News of his passing was shared by Owen Cenazandotti – a fellow streamer who goes by the name Narturo. In a statement with Safine Hamadi, the two shared: “We’ve laughed together for six years, we’ve given each other blow after blow… Six years of memories. I’ll miss you. I love you. Rest in peace, my brother.” They also asked people to not reshare any clips of Graven dead or unconscious.

Following news of his death, tributes have poured in online, and popular streamer Adin Ross has claimed that he had Drake – the rapper who is an ambassador for the Kick streaming platform – have decided to cover the costs for his funeral.

“This is horrible and disgusting. Whoever was a part of this deserves to face severe consequences,” Ross wrote on X, referring to the allegations of violence towards Graven. “I just spoke with Drake. Drake and I will be covering the funeral costs, this won’t bring his life back, it’s the least we can do. Prayers go out to Jean’s family.”

The Canadian rapper has yet to share a public statement about Graven’s death.

Talking to X, French digital technologies minister Clara Chappaz shared her condolences and confirmed that the incident had been referred to Arcom, France’s media regulator. “The death of Jean Pormanove and the violence he endured are an absolute horror. I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones,” the tweet read, adding that the streamer was “humiliated and mistreated for months live on the Kick platform”.

“The responsibility of online platforms regarding the dissemination of illicit content is not optional: It is the law,” she added, sharing that she had contacted Kick for an explanation. “This type of failure can lead to the worst and has no place in France, Europe, or anywhere else.”

In a statement, Kick said (via ITV): “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Jean Pormanove and extend our condolences to his family, friends and community. We are urgently reviewing the circumstances and engaging with relevant stakeholders to investigate the situation.

“Kick’s community guidelines are designed to protect creators, and we remain committed to upholding these standards across our platform.”

This is a developing story.
