Refresh for updates…Meryl Streep honored Robert Redford today, saying in a statement, “One of the lions has passed. Rest in peace my lovely friend.”

Streep’s was just one of many tributes to the Hollywood and indie film icon that began arriving with news of his death at 89 today, and will no doubt continue throughout the day.

“Our film, Coda, came to the attention of everyone because of Sundance,” wrote Marlee Matlin on X. “And Sundance happened because of Robert Redford. A genius has passed.”

“What a career, what an actor, what a sad loss,” wrote Piers Morgan.

Film at Lincoln Center called Redford “a true icon of the silver screen, a tireless champion of up-and-coming film artists…”

Deadline will update this post as more tributes arrive…

RIP Robert Redford, 89.
One of the all-time great movie stars. A true Hollywood legend who starred in so many of my favourite films: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, The Way We Were, All The President’s Men.

Emmerdale star teases John Sugden “twists and turns” as Aaron and Robert remain in danger

by jummy84 September 11, 2025
written by jummy84

However, with things getting ever more complicated for John, it would seem that surely he’s only moments away from being caught out? Or maybe not…

Speaking with RadioTimes.com on the red carpet for the National Television Awards 2025, John’s actor Oliver Farnworth was asked whether there was more carnage on the way for his character.

He teased: “It wouldn’t be Emmerdale without a few twists and turns, would it? So I’d say, just when you think something’s gonna go one way, it can always go another.”

John Sugden in Emmerdale. ITV

Farnworth also said that John does love Aaron “1 million per cent”, and that he “feels like he’s his soulmate”.

“But the problem that comes with that, with someone who’s been kind of shielded from love as John has a lot of their life, is that he doesn’t really know what to do with love.

“So he’s got Aaron, and he goes, ‘Well, I just love you so much, I just want you, I don’t want anyone else.’ It just becomes quite possessive, quite dangerous. And I think that’s what’s happened in this instance, and that’s what’s led to all of this carnage.”

It was previously reported that Farnworth will be departing from the soap “imminently” – but just how soon that actually ends up being, and how much damage John can do in the meantime, remains to be seen. ITV previously declined to comment on John’s future.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1. Stream on ITVX.

'I Swear' Star Robert Aramayo, Director Kirk on Making Tourette's Pic

‘I Swear’ Star Robert Aramayo, Director Kirk on Making Tourette’s Pic

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

A movie about Tourette’s syndrome called “I Swear” usually elicits a small chuckle and “good title” from someone hearing about the film, which premieres in Toronto. And that’s the reaction director and writer Kirk Jones (“Waking Ned Devine”) wants to dispel — using humor and heart to educate audiences about Tourette’s through this real-life story of John Davidson.

The crowd-pleaser bows Sept. 7 at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival. Bankside is repping international sales on the film; Studio Canal distributes in the U.K. while Blue Fox Entertainment distribs in Canada.

Robert Aramayo (“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”) stars as Davidson, who as a young teen in the early 1980s was diagnosed with Tourette’s at a time when it wasn’t understood. Davidson struggled but in adulthood found an advocate in his friend’s mother Dottie (Maxine Peake) and under the mentorship of Tommy (Peter Mullan), who saw through the uncontrollable ticks and swearing and gave him a job. (Aramayo remarks that it was a dream to work with those performers. “And for me, it was, it was just a dream as well. I think that they were all first choices. And you know, that doesn’t always happen,” says Jones).

Davidson not only learned to advocate for himself, he advocated for all with Tourette’s leading outreach and education campaigns through the U.K. In 2019, he accepted an MBE from Queen Elizabeth II.

But while the film will draw tears, it’s hardly a cup of treacle. “We spoke a lot about tone,” says Aramayo, noting that the whole film “could live inside the opening scene.” That shows Davidson freaking out about meeting the queen in order to accept his MBE, finding his inner strength with the help of Dottie to entering the grand hall with a vulgar outburst and charmingly apologizing. “There’s a different kind of energy in that scene with the queen — there’s fun in the film,” he says.

Both Jones and Aramayo were drawn to the material to shed a light on Tourette’s — Jones proudly points out that out of 90 cast members, 30 have Tourette’s.

“I think now actually, especially with artists like Lewis Capaldi, there are people in the spotlight who have Tourette’s, who are quite happy to speak about Tourette’s, who are open about Tourette’s,” says Jones.

“Most people have perhaps the wrong understanding of the condition. For both Rob and I, it was a really steep learning curve.”

Jones spent a lot of time with Davidson, “From a dramatic point of view, from an emotional point of view, from a comedic point of view, I was really drawn to this idea of someone being out of control of what they said, and John, is a really lovely, kind, gentle spirit, but what has come out of his mouth over the years has been violent and aggressive and led to him being beaten up and just in general, causing huge, huge upset. So I just thought it was fascinating, and I was amazed it hadn’t really been dealt with before,” says Jones.

Aramayo says his research was both broad and deep, and spending a lot of time with Davidson as well as people with Tourette’s really allowed him to unlock his portrayal.

“I had this philosophy that I could try and find the John inside of myself. I didn’t want to come from a from a perspective of impersonation, or anything like that,” he says. “And I read lots of books, all about triggers and, like, just really tried to understand and get underneath what ticks are and what Tourette’s is.”

Asked about his incredible physicality in the role, he credits his movement coach. But a kay wans’t so much the tics, it was “literally just the amount of space that John takes up in a room. You know, how he moves around the room. And the robustness to John and things like that was really important to get right,” he says.

“Just to play John himself is not an easy endeavor,” he continues. “I’ve never really been in that energy with a character before!”

Robert Rushing Tells Toya Johnson He “Will No Longer Be Available” Once NFL Season Starts

Earlier this week, Robert Rushing and Toya Johnson took to Instagram to share a joint video post from their accounts. Furthermore, the caption read, “Had to hit her with them papers… it’s that time again. 🏈…”

In the video, Rushing appears to be filming while approaching Johnson with a paper in his hand. As he hands it off to her, Johnson then begins to read the document.

“‘Toya, this is to inform you that 1 week from today is the start of the Falcons’ football season. For the past several months, I have been a helpful, engaging, and loving husband. Robert Earl Keen, Tyler Childers Sing for Texas Flood Relief

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Robert Earl Keen was three songs into his headlining set at his Applause for the Cause benefit last Thursday night, as a crowd of 5,600 exhausted, sweaty, and fulfilled fans hung on his every word. They had been brought here through tragedy, but this was a night of healing at Whitewater Amphitheater, set along the Guadalupe River outside of New Braunfels, Texas.

The event was Keen’s brainchild — a coming together of artists and fans in the same area where flooding on July 4 killed at least 138 people and saw devastation stretching for nearly 30 miles, with all proceeds going to flood relief via the Community Foundation for the Texas Hill Country — and he set up the musical payoff he wanted.

“This has been a day full of surprises,” Keen said from center stage. “But sometimes, there’s a great big surprise!”

Keen and his backing band then launched into “White House Road,” the 2017 Tyler Childers staple that Keen covers frequently.

Keen sang one verse and then gestured to his right, where Childers calmly walked on stage to a microphone. The Texas songwriting icon then stood up, waved to the crowd, and yielded to Childers for the next half hour.

From the wings, Keen smiled and applauded while Childers blistered through a set of signature songs like “Country Squire,” Rustin’ in the Rain,” and “Percheron Mules” before ending with an acoustic version of “Lady May” and ceding the spotlight back to Keen for the grand finale.

The appearance by one of the most in-demand artists in music, with his latest LP Snipe Hunter basking in attention from fans and critics alike, let Keen see his goal of a major benefit show to a successful conclusion. Keen filled out the bill with names like Miranda Lambert, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Ryan Bingham, and Cody Jinks, in large part by texting artists directly and calling in favors in the wake of the tragedy.

“Mr. Keen reached out to me and asked if I’d be willing to come down here to Texas,” Childers told the crowd. “I said, ‘absolutely.’ I was honored that he asked me, and I wasn’t doing anything but hanging out at the house anyhow.”

Editor’s picks

Organizers estimated the concert, along with an auction the previous evening at nearby Gruene Hall — hosted by Keen and with Childers attending — had raised at least $3 million by the end of the night. A slew of sponsors pitched in to offset the cost of producing a high-end event. Arch “Beaver” Aplin, CEO of the Buc-ee’s chain and a presenting sponsor, tells Rolling Stone: “Robert Earl told me he was gonna have a big lineup of artists, and I said, ‘Are all the artists participating volunteering their time?’ He said yes, and I said, ‘Well, I’m all in.’ All these artists are doing it for the right reasons — to raise money after this unspeakable tragedy. That was the sell for me.”

It was neither the first benefit concert, nor the largest — that distinction went to the “Band Together Texas” flood relief concert, co-hosted by Lambert and Parker McCollum, at Austin’s Moody Center earlier in August, which raised at least $8.5 million. But the combination of the Hill Country setting, steps from the same Guadalupe River that flooded Kerrville on July 4, and Keen’s involvement made Applause for the Cause arguably the most significant. As the show played out over nearly 10 hours, artists backstage mingled and caught up with one another.

With the afternoon temperatures nearing 100 degrees, Vincent Neil Emerson opened the day playing on a side stage with a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Dead Flowers” and his ode to his favorite dance hall, “White Horse Saloon.” By midnight, nearly 30 artists had taken turns serenading the Whitewater crowd.

Related Content

The first hour on the main stage, featuring artists like Kelsey Waldon, Jason Boland, Jamestown Revival, and Sarah Jarosz, ended with Keen’s first appearance. As Terry Allen played “Amarillo Highway,” Keen stepped out to sing a verse of the song he has covered for most of his career. After the song, Allen said, “That’s a song that Robert Earl Keen did not write.”

Keen then gave a welcome address, saying, “Music can relieve our grief, warm our hearts, and bring strangers together in a celebration of life,” before asking fans to join him in “Amazing Grace.”

The main stage sets began in earnest with Lambert, Jon Randall, and Jack Ingram swapping songs, backed by a group of Lone Star State musicians that Keen termed “the all-star house band.” Lambert sent “Tequila Does” out to fans whose judgment may have been compromised in the midsummer heat, while Ingram covered Charlie Robison’s “My Hometown” and dedicated it to the late Texas crooner. Hayes Carll, Radney Foster, and Ray Wylie Hubbard followed with a set of standards that Hubbard capped off with his own “Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother” as the sun set. When Randy Rogers joined the Panhandlers — Cleto Cordero, Josh Abbott, and William Clark Green — Cordero, the frontman of Flatland Cavalry, said, “It feels like I’m on stage with my heroes.”

The last song swap featured Bingham, Jamey Johnson, and Cody Jinks, who led off by telling the crowd, “I still find it as cool as you do that they put me with these two guys up here.” The high point was a series of extended ovations for Bingham’s “Bread and Water,” Johnson’s “In Color,” and Jinks’ “Hippies and Cowboys.”

On the heels of a sold-out Boys From Oklahoma show in Waco, Texas, the weekend prior, and on the day the band announced an April date at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Cross Canadian Ragweed took the stage ahead of Keen and Childers. The eight-song set featured Boland sitting in on “17” and a pair of Todd Snider covers, “I Believe You” and “Late Last Night.” Frontman Cody Canada dedicated the song “Boys from Oklahoma,” their longtime homage to marijuana, to Texas governor Greg Abbott, and sang the line “Get your shit together, Texas, and legalize the weed.”

Canada was openly appreciative of the lineup that Keen put together, remarking from the stage that the backstage vibe was that of a family reunion. Several artists on the bill spent their dues-paying days in New Braunfels and the surrounding Hill Country before their careers took off.

“If you only knew the hell that Jason Boland and Ryan Bingham and I used to raise up the road at River Road Ice House,” Canada deadpanned, before making a slight correction. “If I only knew the hell we raised.”

After Ragweed cleared out, Keen walked to a chair at center stage. The “all-star house band” consisted largely of Keen’s touring outfit, though the legendary producer Lloyd Maines sat in on steel guitar. So, when they kicked off the final set with “Feelin’ Good Again,” it felt like a classic Keen performance.

Keen was acutely aware that Childers’ half-hour performance stood to drain the crowd, so he saved his biggest anthems for the end of the show. Before he left the stage, Childers made a point to embrace Keen, who then went directly into “Dreadful Selfish Crime.” That was followed by “The Road Goes on Forever,” which has yet to be upstaged by any artist — Childers, Ragweed, or otherwise.

“This is overwhelming for me,” Keen told the crowd after the song. “But as far as a group of people, you’ve done it man. Thank you so much.”

Keen closed the evening by bringing Canada on stage to sing “My Hometown” as a duet — the second time the song was featured during the benefit — as an extended drone display lit up the sky above the stage.

Backstage moments later, with the crowd still filing out and workers firing up forklifts to clear equipment, Childers sought out Keen for a proper goodbye. It was Keen who got the first words in.

Robert Townsend Praises Beyoncé, Reflects On ‘Carmen’ Audition

by jummy84 August 29, 2025
written by jummy84

Robert Townsend wanted to blindly hire Beyoncé to star as Carmen Brown in the MTV film, Carmen: A Hip Hopera, and watched Queen Bey “blossom” right before his eyes.

In conversation with Lena Waithe for Legacy Talk, Townsend reflected on the singer’s audition for her acting debut in the 2001 film.

“I didn’t know Beyoncé […] I knew of her and I was like, ‘Wow, she has a striking look.’ You know, she’s a beautiful, young girl, but I could see that she had something special. ‘Cause [with] my director eyes, I go, ‘Something’s going on with her. She’s got something,’” he remembered. Townsend felt Bey was perfect for the role, but the studio demanded that she audition for it.

With this being her first audition ever, Townsend could tell that Bey was “really nervous” and used her team to strengthen her performance.

“I have an arsenal when it comes to getting performance or making somebody comfortable,” he explained before detailing he told her bodyguard and the label executive who accompanied Bey to be part of the scene as well.

Ironically, Townsend admitted, “They started to sweat and really get nervous and then she was watching them get nervous and she got stronger. I said, ‘Oh, there it is.’” Bey was so excited and asked to repeat the scene a few more times and even requested to do the “death scene.” (For those who haven’t seen Carmen: A Hip Hopera, yes, her character dies.)

Townsend was clearly impressed and later praised Beyoncé, her tenacity, and star power.

“Watching her blossom into the superstar that she has become, I saw it in that room because there’s certain actors/actresses’ first audition, they wouldn’t go all the way there. She went all the way there,” he said proudly.

The full conversation can be viewed here; check out the Bey snippet above.
