How Designer Rio Uribe Overcame 'Being Hot, and Then Not' in Fashion

Designer Rio Uribe’s journey through the fashion industry hasn’t exactly been a breeze. (Has anyone’s?) The Los Angeles native worked in janitorial and retail before moving to New York City and getting a job in the stockroom of a Balenciaga store; there, he climbed his way up to a corporate …

Rio Spring 2026 Ready-to-Wear Collection

It’s been–to say the least–a turbulent year for Los Angeles, with last winter’s wildfires giving way to ongoing ICE raids that have disproportionately targeted the city’s sizable Latino community. At The Rio World’s runway show at The Broad on Tuesday, November 11, though, resistance was not just palpable but joyful; the event, dubbed “A Poem and a Protest” was billed as “an immersive evening of fashion, music, performance, and art honoring creative spirit and cultural expression while celebrating the Latinx community of Los Angeles.”

Rio Uribe’s collection creatively reflected the influence that Latinos have had on the L.A. goth scene, with models dancing down the runway in dramatic black-and-white makeup, giant hoops, bucket hats, visible thong bikini bottoms under miniskirts, and—in one memorable instance–a skinny scarf. (Were we ever so young?)

Uribe’s talent for blurring oppressive and binary gender lines was as evident as ever, with the audience–which included model Vivian Wilson and influencer Aaliyah Mendes–hooting appreciatively at a low-slung, frayed, puffed take on a uniform kilt that seemed to recall Emma Corrin’s 2021 Miu Miu micro-mini, begging the question: is this the era of the schoolthey skirt?

Fun abounded through denim newsboy caps, sheer plaid T-shirts displaying bikini tops underneath, and fur coats that could have been borrowed from a grandmother’s closet layered over bare chests, but the night’s potent political message was consistent and carefully executed; a surveillance drone buzzed persistently in the air from the show’s opening moments to its close, and when singer Cain Culto–who also walked in the show–took the mic to perform his song “KFC Santería” (sample lyric: “F*ck Trump, F*CK ICE, free Palestine”), the tips of his fingers were blue, as if he’d recently been fingerprinted.

“I started designing the collection in summer of 2024, and it was very much about beauty and poetry and how much I love the beaches and the laid-back style; I made a lot of pieces that are ruffled and stretchy and comfortable with some sparkle and denim, but when we started seeing ICE raids and protests and budget cuts, I decided it would be kind of irresponsible or out of touch to continue with that collection,” Uribe said, adding, “We started building out this very armor-like section of the show that was quilted, reflective, ready for anything. In my mind, my girl is leaving work, going to a protest to stand up for herself and her friends, and then going out to dinner or to the club. What would that outfit look like? What does she need to be wearing?”

As the strains of cumbia and ’90s música romántica rang out through the crowd and the smoky perfume of a model’s lit cigarette reached the front row at the night’s end, the actual LAPD helicopters circling over downtown L.A. only reinforced the ominous yet defiant message sent by the silhouette of the drone against the Broad’s side: if you’re being watched (and imitated 24/7, you might as well put on a show.

bitchy | Princess Kate will skip the Rio Earthshot events because of the Forest Lodge move

It’s still fascinating to see the complete lack of commentary around the Princess of Wales refusing to attend her husband’s Earthshot Prize ceremonies. Kate only went to the first two Earthshot events. She skipped in 2023 because “George had a test,” a hilariously dumb excuse. She skipped last year because her health was too fragile to travel internationally for anything other vacations. Speaking of, Kate has traveled a lot this year – several ski trips to the Alps, a vacation in Mustique in February, several weeks on a yacht in Greece, and probably several more vacations which we don’t even know about. But when it comes time to travel for “work,” Kate begs off. She will not join her husband in Rio. She even had a brand-new excuse: she can’t go to Rio because she’s moving into Forest Lodge!

Kate Middleton won’t join Prince William in Brazil for a key royal outing. The Prince of Wales, 43, is set to travel solo to Rio de Janeiro for his Earthshot Prize awards ceremony on Nov. 5. The Earthshot Prize “searches the world for environmental solutions that show the greatest potential.” During the event, William and a distinguished prize council will announce the five winners with a prize of £1 million, or around $1.3 million.

Following the events in Rio, William will then head to the UN climate conference in Belém, Brazil, on Nov. 6.

Meanwhile, Princess Kate will be staying home with the couple’s three children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7.

This year, Kate will be focused not only on taking care of the kids during their half-term break from Lambrook School and her ongoing recovery after announcing she was in remission from cancer, but she’s also seeing her family through a major transition.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ family plans to move from Adelaide Cottage in Windsor to the nearby Forest Lodge in the coming weeks, upgrading from the four-bedroom abode to the eight-bedroom home on the Windsor Great Park estate.

The relocation serves as a fresh start for the family, who have endured a trying few years since moving to Adelaide Cottage in August 2022. Following that transition, the royal family mourned the loss of William’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth, as well as Kate and King Charles’ dual cancer diagnoses.

[From People]

“I can’t support my husband’s busywork scheme because I’m organizing our move into our fifth forever home which includes a 150-acre land grab of a public park” is quite an excuse. Granted, I acknowledge that much of this isn’t even Kate’s choice. While I doubt she wants to go to any Earthshot events, William absolutely does not want her there. That goes back to all of those suspicious stories in 2023, about how we would see William stepping out solo more often, and how he acts like a hot divorced dad or something. They were hyping up Solo/Single William a lot in the months before Kate’s mysterious hospitalization in January 2024.

Fest Rio Announces China Focus in 2026, Premieres CMG’s ‘Shenzhou 13’

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — The Rio International Film Fest will feature China as its country focus in next year’s edition, as part of the 2026 China-Brazil Cultural Year, said Walkiria Barbosa, Rio Fest’s executive director and int’l marketing.

The governments of the two countries announced in Nov. 2024, during a visit of China’s president Xi Jinping to Brazil, that the  2026 China-Brazil Cultural Year will feature a broad programming element, currently in preparation.

“China is the largest film market in the world. Our intention is to have in the 2026 edition of Rio Fest the main Chinese film production companies, streamers and exhibitors for a big business meeting and screening of Chinese films,” Barbosa told Variety.

The China Media Group (CMG) made a presentation Oct. 3 in RioMarket, the business section of Rio Fest, with the presence of the company’s Latin America chief bureau Zhu Boying, as well as of China’s consul in Rio, Tian Min.

Following the presentation, CMG premiered the feature “Shenzhou 13,” the country’s first 8K film shot in space, which was theatrically released nationwide in China Sept. 5.

The film depicts the routine of astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping, and Ye Guangfu on the Shenzhou-13 mission, which was launched Oct. 16, 2021. The crew spent a total of 183 days in orbit, setting a new record for the longest continuous spaceflight by Chinese astronauts.

The film reveals awe-inspiring cosmic vistas and glimpses of daily life in orbit, captured with 8K ultra-high-definition cameras. Most of the footage was filmed by astronauts, with Wang’s perspective guiding the story.

The main Brazil-China co-production now in course is produced by Rio-based LC Barreto and CCTV Animation, a subsidiary of CMG. They are developing a TV animation series and an animation feature, both with Panda HoHo, a well-known character starring in other CMG productions.

“Hoho & The Tropical Sound Clash” is a 3D animated series aimed at preschoolers. The series is due to have four seasons, each with 13 episodes running 10 minutes in length.

Series showrunner Joao Amorim told Variety the first season is expected to open in the second half of 2026 on free-to-air TV channels TV Cultura in Brazil and CCTV Animation in China. Zhang Fan is the series’ animation director.

In the series, Panda HoHo will form part of a trio of Brazilian animals, with a Golden Lion Tamarin, a symbol of Brazilian biodiversity, and Capy, an adventurous capybara. In each episode, the trio will embark on adventures across Brazil, discovering unique biomes, cultural traditions and important lessons about environmental preservation and the power of collaboration.

The second LC Barreto-CCTV project, “Amazonika – The Origin” is a 3D animated feature about the recreation of the Amazon Rainforest, presented as an ancient link between Asian and Brazil’s Indigenous cultures. Panda HoHo will help Zo, a young man who can communicate with nature, and Nika, a bold princess warrior, to restore harmony in a world on the edge of collapse.

“We are working with two Indigenous Brazilians as consultants for the projects. Benki Piyãko is of the Asháninka original people and Zezinho Yube is of the Huni Kuin people,” Amorim said.
