Sabrina Carpenter advocates for trans rights during MTV VMAs performance: “In trans we trust”

Sabrina Carpenter turned the 2025 MTV VMAs into a huge dance party with her ‘Tears’ performance, which also saw her celebrate and advocate for trans and LGBTQ+ rights – watch the full performance below.

The 2025 MTV VMAs took place last night (September 7) at the UBS Arena in Long Island. A highly anticipated moment of the entire awards show was Sabrina Carpenter’s performance, which lived up to fans’ expectations.

For her performance, she played ‘Tears’, taken off her latest album ‘Man’s Best Friend’. The performance saw the singer appear from underneath a manhole cover to join a slew of drag and trans performers and other dancers onstage.

Throughout the performance, dancers in the background held up hand-drawn signs that read “Protect Trans Rights”, “In Trans We Trust”, “Support Local Drag”, “Love Each Other” and “If You Hate You’ll Never Get Laid” among others. Later on, Carpenter ditched her shimmery top for a dance break that saw sprinklers rain down on her and her dancers, a la Flashdance.

Watch the full performance below.

Elsewhere at the VMAS, Sabrina Carpenter also won Album Of The Year for last year’s ‘Short N’ Sweet’, Pop Artist and Best Visual Effects for her ‘Manchild’ music video. During her acceptance speech for Album Of The Year’, Carpenter doubled down on her support for the queer community, thanking her “queens on stage”.

“This world, as we all know, can be so full of criticism and discrimination and negativity,” she said in her speech. “So to get to be part of something that can bring light, make you smile, make you dance, and make you feel like the world is your fucking oyster. I’m so grateful to do that.”

As for her new album ‘Man’s Best Friend’, that record scored a four-star review from Nick Levine for NME: “Given Carpenter’s fondness for even a dodgy double entendre, it feels fitting to end on one. With ‘Man’s Best Friend’, she’s done more than enough to keep herself on top.”

Elsewhere at the 2025 MTV VMAs, Ariana Grande took home the night’s biggest award, Video Of The Year’ for ‘Brighter Days Ahead’, while Lady Gaga was crowned Artist Of The Year, Rosé and Bruno Mars won Song Of The Year for ‘APT.’ and Mariah Carey was awarded the Video Vanguard award for her historic career. Yungblud and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry have also paid tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne with a touching performance. Check out the full list of winners here.

Amazon picks up rights to Life Is Strange with Kaos creator as writer and showrunner

The games centre around 18-year-old photography student Max Caulfield, who learns that she is capable of rewinding time.

Based on the premise of the butterfly effect, by which changing small things in the present can radically alter the future, the narrative unfolds in different ways depending on how players choose to use this power to interact with the world.

The show is set to be written by Charlie Covell, the writer behind hit shows such as Netflix’s Kaos and The End of the F***ing World, who will also serve as executive producer and showrunner.

KAOS creator Charlie Covell will act as writer and showrunner. Netflix

They will be joined by executive producers Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson under their Story Kitchen production company.

The series comes from the game’s original publisher Square Enix, as well as Story Kitchen, Lucky Chap and Amazon MGM Studios producing.

On the project, Story Kitchen’s Johnson and Goldberg said, “Story Kitchen has always believed that Life Is Strange deserved to be more than just a game – it’s a cultural touchstone.

“After a decade-long journey, we’re honoured to be bringing this beloved story to Amazon MGM alongside our incredible partners at Square Enix, our brilliant showrunner/writer Charlie Covell, and the amazing team at LuckyChap.

“Together, this thoughtfully assembled dream team is ready to share Life Is Strange with the world in an entirely new way!”

Covell was equally enthusiastic about the chance to work on the game, stating “It’s a huge honour to be adapting Life Is Strange of Amazon MGM Studios. I am a massive fan of the game, and I’m thrilled to be working with the incredible teams at Square Enix, Story Kitchen and Lucky Chap

“I can’t wait to share Max and Chloe’s story with fellow players and new audiences alike.”

The original Life Is Strange, first released in 2015, received widespread acclaim from both critics and players, largely for its characters and storytelling.

Since then, Life Is Strange 2, released in two chunks across 2018 and 2019, and 2024’s Life Is Strange: Double Exposure have proven rather more divisive, garnering mixed reviews, having been perceived to lack aspects of what made the original so special.

Morrissey Email Soliciting Offers for Rights to Smiths Songs Shut Down

by jummy84 September 6, 2025

Morrissey shut down an email to solicit offers for his rights to the Smiths’ music and other connected intellectual property, according to a post on his official website.

“The ‘eaves’ business email address has been switched off due to the colossal response to Morrissey’s announcement of his wish to pass his ‘Smiths’ interests over to an investor,” the post from Friday stated. “Although Morrisseys’ love for the songs of the Smiths era will never waver, he is tired of the disagreeable and vexatious characters involved in ‘The Smiths’ business.”

The post continued: “After thirty-eight years of insults and abuse, Morrissey has had enough. All (or most) of the ‘eaves’ emails will be answered in time.”

Last week, Morrissey Central and the singer’s official Instagram accounts posted an announcement that he was selling the entirety of his business interests in the Smiths. It is unclear if Morrissey created the posts. Reps for Morrissey did not immediately return Rolling Stone’s requests for comment. The posts, titled “A Soul for Sale,” included a quote attributed to the former Smiths frontman that said he was “burnt out by any and all connections” with his former bandmates, and wanted to “live disassociated” from them. He cited that it led him to put his rights to Smiths intellectual property up for sale. The announcement included an email address, which bounced back when Rolling Stone reached out for comment.

Up for grabs, per the announcement, are the “full and exclusive rights” to the name “The Smiths” created by Morrissey, all of the Smiths’ artwork created by him, All Smiths merchandising rights, all Smiths songs lyrically and musically, all synchronization rights, all Smiths recordings, and all contractual rights for Smiths publishing.

“I am burnt out by any and all connections to [Former Smiths members Johnny] Marr, [Andy] Rourke, [Mike] Joyce. I have had enough of malicious associations. With my entire life I have paid my rightful dues to these songs and these images,” he said per the quote attributed to him. “I would now like to live disassociated from those who wish me nothing but ill-will and destruction, and this is the only resolution.”

Morrissey continued: “The songs are me – they are no one else – but they bring with them business communications that go to excessive lengths to create as much dread and spite year after year. I must now protect myself, especially my health.”

A rep for Marr did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment regarding the sale announcement. A rep for Joyce said he does not comment on what his former bandmates say or do.

The Smiths broke up in 1987 and Morrissey and Marr have had a tenuous relationship ever since. Last year, Marr revealed he said “no” to an offer Morrissey said he received from AEG Entertainment Group to reform the band alongside Marr.

Though in 2008, they met at a pub to discuss a possible Smiths reunion. “In that moment it seemed that with the right intention it could actually be done and might even be great,” Marr wrote in his 2016 memoir Set the Boy Free. “For four days it was a very real prospect.” The potential reunion was fleeting, however, after Marr left to Mexico to tour with the Cribs. “And then suddenly there was radio silence,” Marr wrote. “Our communication ended, and things went back to how they were and how I expect they always will be.”

Drummer Joyce has been estranged from Morrissey and Marr following a 1996 lawsuit over the Smiths royalties that was contentious. After bassist Rourke died in 2023, a proper reunion was no longer possible.

Morrissey Claims He’s Selling His Rights to the Smiths’ Catalog

by jummy84 September 5, 2025

Morrissey would apparently like to divest from the Smiths. A post on his website claims that he “has no choice but to offer for sale all of his business interests in ‘The Smiths’ to any interested party / investor” because he is “burnt out by any and all connections to” his former bandmates: guitarist Johnny Marr, drummer Mike Joyce, and the late bassist Andy Rourke.

When reached by Pitchfork, representatives for Johnny Marr had no immediate comment to share from the guitarist. And Mike Joyce’s manager told Pitchfork that the drummer does not comment on the actions or comments of his former bandmates.

Morrissey is apparently trying to offload his stake in the Smiths’ band name, artwork, song titles, lyrics, recordings, merchandise, and rights to publishing and synchronization. There is also a Gmail address for “serious investors” to contact, but Pitchfork’s email to it bounced back.

“I have had enough of malicious associations,” wrote Morrissey. “With my entire life I have paid my rightful dues to these songs and these images. I would now like to live disassociated from those who wish me nothing but ill-will and destruction, and this is the only resolution. The songs are me – they are no one else – but they bring with them business communications that go to excessive lengths to create as much dread and spite year after year. I must now protect myself, especially my health.”

The Smiths broke up in 1987, five years after forming. In his 2016 memoir, Set the Boy Free, Marr discussed the possibility of reuniting with Morrissey in 2008. Music festivals such as Coachella have reportedly offered generous performance fees to entice the British jangle-pop staples to get back together, too, but the Smiths’ remaining members have rejected those deals. Last year, Morrissey said that he agreed to a “lucrative” offer for him and Marr to perform a global tour in 2025, but that Marr ignored it. In a statement to Pitchfork, Marr clarified: “I didn’t ignore the offer. I said no.”

Also last year, Morrissey asserted that Marr obtained the trademark rights to the Smiths’ name “without any consultation to Morrissey, and without allowing Morrissey the standard opportunity of ‘objection.’” Speaking with Pitchfork, Marr’s management said that, in 2018, “Marr reached out to Morrissey, via his representatives, to work together in protecting The Smiths’ name.” Following a lack of response from Morrissey, the guitarist decided “to register the trademark himself.”

“There is also an obvious media shift to delete me from being the central essence of the Smiths,” Morrissey wrote on his website in January, “but this cannot work because I invented the group name, the song-titles, the album titles, the artwork, the vocal melodies, and all of the lyrical sentiments came from my heart … and so it’s a bit like saying Mick Jagger had nothing to do with the Stones.”

CW, Pac-12 Extend Rights Deal Through 2030-31 Season

Nexstar’s CW Network and the Pac-12 Conference are continuing their team-up –even if some of the teams associated with the group are no longer present

The broadcast network and the collegiate-sports league have extended their current rights deal through the 2030-31 season. Under terms of the pact, the CW will televise 13 regular-season football games next year, during the 2026-27 season, along with regular-season telecasts of 35 men’s basketball games and 15 women’s basketball games. CW will also get to telecast the semifinal and championship games for the new Pac-12 women’s basketball tournament. Pac-12 Enterprises, the broadcast production arm of the conference, will produce all football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball games, totaling 66 events annually.

The original Pac-12 fell apart last year when USC and UCLA, and then others, exited for other groups. Those maneuvers left Oregon State and Washington State as the group’s only members. The new grouping, which launches in 2026, will also feature Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State. Gonzaga will join for sports not tied to football and Texas State will serve as an joins as the eighth football member. Pac-12 has already struck a deal with CBS Sports to show some of its games.

“The Pac-12 has been a key partner in the success of CW Sports, and we are thrilled to solidify our relationship with the conference for an additional five years,” said Brad Schwartz, president of The CW Network, in a statement. “We have experienced firsthand the passion of the Oregon State and Washington State football programs and their dedicated fans and we are eager to introduce an additional seven schools in the new Pac-12 to our nationwide CW Sports audience. We are also excited to bring Pac-12 men’s and women’s basketball to our viewers featuring some of the most dynamic and celebrated collegiate programs in the country.”

Pac-12 has been on CW since the 2024 football season, and will be telecast by the network in 2025. The CW’s most-watched college football game of the year was the matchup between Washington State and Oregon State in Corvallis.

“The Pac-12’s partnership with The CW has been one of mutual growth and transformation, from the development of our Pac-12 Enterprises’ broadcast production business to the significant added value and positive impact to our current and future members via true national reach across 100% of U.S. television households,” said Teresa Gould, the Pac-12 commissioner, in a statement.
