Apologies to the Queen Mary

Wolf Parade

Sub Pop

27 September 2005

With the seemingly ever-growing list of “wolf” bands circa 2005 (Wolf Eyes, Wolfmother, Superwolf), Wolf Parade could have been nothing more than a novelty act, especially considering their slapdash formation. This was a time when the indie apparatus felt compelled to churn out hot new bands (ahem, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah) with little regard for their long-term viability.

Fellow Canadians Arcade Fire, widely considered indie’s next big thing, invited Spencer Krug (then a member of Frog Eyes) to open for them. Krug engaged Dan Boeckner (formerly of Atlas Strategic) and eventually scrapped the drum machine to enlist the talents of Arlen Thompson. That was all prior to the band members learning they had some common ties, in particular having attended Expo 86, the World’s Fair held in Vancouver to celebrate the city’s centennial.

Following some gigs and self-releases, they began rubbing elbows with Isaac Brock, who had ties to Sub Pop and was able to secure them a signing to the label and record a proper EP. When it came time to record their first full-length, it only made sense for Brock to take the helm as producer. With this setup, it seemed impossible for them to fail. What wasn’t a given is just how superb their first record would be, if not in terms of record sales, at least in the collective mindset of indie enthusiasts who were hearing a hot take on those raucous yet familiar sounds.

Wolf Parade – “Shine a Light”

Wolf Parade‘s Apologies to the Queen Mary was met with instant praise, garnering a 9.2 from Pitchfork, which likened the experience to hearing Modest Mouse for the first time. It wasn’t entirely the Brock influence either, although his presence can certainly be felt. It was more the excitement of hearing something so groundbreaking for the first time, similar to how people mythologize Arcade Fire’s Funeral today. Moreover, Wolf Parade’s debut record took full advantage of the spotlight. Unwittingly, it paved the way for Band of Horses’ Everything All the Time, where a band could gain instant recognition with just one song, at the risk of their identity being obfuscated in the process.

As a group formed by two principal songwriters, the Wolf Parade’s LP alternates between the two, a trend that has continued throughout their career. A debate instantly raged about whether Krug or Boeckner was the better songwriter. My friends and I had intense discussions about who was the better vocalist and why, each person leaning toward one camp but willing to concede on certain points. For instance, I consider myself a Boeckner guy through and through, but I maintain that Krug’s “I’ll Believe in Anything” towers above anything in their catalog, whereas a Krug devotee may find Boeckner’s “Shine a Light” equally unmatched.

Apologies to the Queen Mary arrived prior to the ubiquitous scholarly phrase “not either-or; both-and”. However, that is precisely what Wolf Parade demanded of listeners. Those debates, while a fun diversion, become effectively irrelevant because both singers are great and each makes the other better. What has made the group so brilliant is not only Krug and Boeckner’s contrasts but also how their styles converged. They achieve a certain synergy that can only come from musicians so distinct yet complementary. This duality has made Wolf Parade far more enjoyable than their respective solo endeavors, Sunset Rubdown and Handsome Furs.

Wolf Parade – “I’ll Believe in Anything”

Wolf Parade’s debut was more than a platform to showcase Krug and Boeckner. There is depth to the songwriting that allowed cohesive themes to emerge. If childhood and death colored Funeral, Wolf Parade ruminated on ghosts and nighttime, with an apparent disdain for modern constructs. They made the case rather simply on “Modern World” (“I’m not in love with the modern world”) but could equally employ a more lyrical turn of phrase.

The anthemic “Shine a Light”, with its churning guitar and steady synthesizer, finds Boeckner lamenting the current state of things: “There is an awful sound, this haunted town / And it will not, it will not, just be quiet.” The song soon shifts to the afterlife, and he alludes to that old Jim Morrison adage: no one here gets out alive.

Ghosts seem to appear everywhere. They are being pinned down by streetlights and haunting us in domestic spaces, as they witness us succumb to the opiate of the people. There is an urgency to solve the dilemma of life after death. The imagery the band conjures seems to straddle this world and the next. In the blistering “Fancy Claps”, Krug instructs, “When I die, I’m leaving you my feet / When you die, you can stand up for me / We can lie in a homemade canoe / You can put me in your hair, I’ll be happy there.” The visuals are mind-boggling and absolutely brilliant.

Wolf Parade – ” Modern World”

Perhaps the most defining quality of Apologies to the Queen Mary is Wolf Parade’s exuberance. That element can come across as childlike, as heard on “Grounds for Divorce”, or with the ferocious intensity of “We Built Another World”. There are moments of lethargy, like “Same Ghost Every Night”, but the overall impression is that of a band eager to get down to business. That industriousness can be felt with the vulnerable and romantic “This Heart’s on Fire”, which would delight even the most ardent Bruce Springsteen fan.

Similar to Arcade Fire before them, Wolf Parade’s sophomore album, At Mount Zoomer (2008), didn’t quite live up to the hype. However, upon second or perhaps third listen, it may be that it should have (I would challenge anyone to find a more compelling trio of songs than what closes the record). They would go on to release a handful of meaningful albums, including the underappreciated EXPO 86 (2010). They could reasonably release another stunner today, as they have not officially disbanded.

Even after 20 years, Wolf Parade’s debut record still titillates. As good as Apologies to the Queen Mary will forever be—and it is a revelation—it will never transcend the standout track: “I’ll Believe in Anything”. Good or bad, the album will be mentioned in the same breath as those first keyboard notes, drum strikes, and yelping cadence. The vigor with which Krug pleads “Your blood / Your bones / Your voice / And your ghost” feels as visceral—as lifelike, if you will—as anything the band (or those who would become their lifelong fans) could have envisioned.

Emma Stone’s Bugonia Dialogues: The Most Mind-Blowing Revelation Of The Year! | Glamsham.com

With a few months left in the year, moviegoers still have plenty to look forward to — and Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming film Bugonia is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated releases of the season. Known for his unique cinematic style (The Favourite, Poor Things), Lanthimos returns with a darkly humorous, genre-bending tale that blends conspiracy, sci-fi, and psychological tension.

Bugonia stars Emma Stone as Michelle, a powerful, self-assured corporate executive whose life is turned upside down when she is kidnapped by two eccentric men obsessed with conspiracy theories. But this isn’t a standard kidnapping — there’s no demand for ransom, no threats over money or power. Instead, her captors are convinced that Michelle is not a human being, but an alien sent to Earth as part of a plot to destroy it.

The trailer hints at an offbeat and chaotic ride, with Michelle desperately trying to reason with her abductors, only to realize that logic doesn’t work when you’re up against delusion. At one point, in an effort to escape the endless interrogation, she even sarcastically confesses to being an alien — a moment met with skepticism. “The truth, lies, what’s the difference?” she asks, summing up the film’s themes of perception, identity, and control.

Lanthimos’ signature style is on full display, with disorienting camera angles, surreal color palettes, and an atmosphere teetering between absurdity and dread. As the kidnappers’ plan unravels, the lines between reality and belief become increasingly blurred.

Joining Stone in the cast are Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Vanessa Eng, Cedric Dumornay, and Alicia Silverstone. With its mysterious premise and razor-sharp satire, Bugonia promises a thrilling and unconventional addition to this year’s lineup of monster and alien-themed films.

From late-night TV interviews to daytime talk show appearances, the 35-year-old global pop sensation teased that a major announcement was coming to Good Morning America. What Was Taylor’s GMA Announcement?

Prior to her highly anticipated GMA appearance, Taylor shared an announcement on Instagram about her upcoming Disney+ docuseries, The End of an Era.

“It was the End of an Era, and we knew it,” her caption began. “We wanted to remember every moment leading up to the culmination of the most important and intense chapter of our lives, so we allowed filmmakers to capture this tour and all the stories woven throughout it as it wound down. And to film the final show in its entirety. The Eras Tour | The Final Show, featuring the entire Tortured Poets Department set, and the first two episodes of The End of an Era, a 6-episode behind-the-scenes docuseries will be yours December 12th on @disneyplus.”

The Kapil Sharma Show Stars Unite!” – Kiku Sharda And Krushna Abhishek’s Shocking Revelation! | Glamsham.com

Kiku Sharda, one of the most loved faces from The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, has finally addressed speculation about his alleged fallout with co-star Krushna Abhishek. Reports had suggested that Sharda had quit the comedy series after a supposed on-set argument with Krushna. However, putting all rumours to rest, the actor confirmed that there is no feud and that he continues to be an integral part of Kapil Sharma’s team.

Taking to Instagram, Sharda shared a cheerful photo with Krushna and wrote, “yeh bandhan… kabhi nahi tootega! The ‘fight’ was a prank only.” He also urged fans not to believe gossip, assuring them that he remains part of the show’s “parivaar.”

Viral Clip Sparked Confusion

The misunderstanding began after a video circulated online showing Sharda and Krushna in what looked like a heated exchange. In the clip, Krushna was heard saying, “Aap karlo, bhai, koi problem nahi hai. Main jata hu yaha se,” while Sharda responded, “Raise voice ka baat nahi hai, aap isko galat tarike se leke jaa rahe hai.”

What seemed like a genuine argument turned out to be scripted banter, later revealed as a prank. The video’s timing, paired with a paparazzo’s post, fueled assumptions that Sharda had walked out of the show.

Fans Reassured

Sharda’s clarification not only reaffirmed his strong bond with Krushna but also reminded viewers that only three episodes remain in the ongoing season on Netflix. His statement reflects his trademark humour and reassures audiences that the laughter will continue uninterrupted.

Beyond Comedy

While continuing his work on The Great Indian Kapil Show, Sharda is also gearing up for a new project. He is expected to feature in Ashneer Grover’s upcoming series Rise and Fall on Amazon MX Player, with an official announcement awaited.

Jason Kelce has acknowledged that he may not be Travis Kelce’s best man when he gets married to pop star Taylor Swift.

The announcement of Swift and Kelce’s engagement on social media last Tuesday caused a global frenzy.

A crucial aspect of organizing the majority of weddings is choosing the wedding party, which consists of the bridesmaids and groomsmen.

Given their strong relationship and Swift’s obvious adoration for the former Philadelphia Eagles center, many people believe that Jason would be Travis’s first option because he is the most significant or brother of the game gender.

“I hope I’m the best man. I’m just hoping to get the opportunity,” Jason stated on Bussin’ With The Boys, adding, “We’ll see. Trav has a lot of friends.”

Who else can be Travis Kelce’s best man?

Kelce has a lot of choices for his best man, including his boyhood pal Aric Jones, whom he has previously referred to as his “best friend” on New Heights.

Travis might also select Patrick Mahomes, whose wife Brittany Mahomes is a close pal of Swift.

The ‘Anti-Hero’ singer’s fans have already predicted that Jason will be the best man at her wedding.

Most people used the footage of Jason dancing on stage in advance of an Eagles game versus the Atlanta Falcons in September last year.

What we know about Travis-Taylor Swift wedding

The Grammy winner and the 35-year-old NFL player shared the news of their engagement on Instagram on Aug. 26, nearly two years after they first made their romance public.

The couple announced, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨,” concluding the statement with a dynamite emoji, which appeared to be a reference to their “TNT” moniker.

“Right now they just want to enjoy being engaged and they are going to take their time with it,” an insider told the People. “It has been a relief not having to keep it a secret anymore, and they are glad it is out in the open.”

Venice 2025: ‘The Testament of Ann Lee’ is a Cinematic Revelation

by Alex Billington
September 1, 2025

The exhilaration of majestic cinema once again at the Venice Film Festival. Following last year’s masterful The Brutalist (here is my 10/10 review), filmmakers Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold are back again at Venice this year with their latest work. The Testament of Ann Lee is the third feature film directed by Norwegian filmmaker and actress Mona Fastvold, who is married to Brady Corbet. They co-wrote both of these films together and this one is also shot on film just like The Brutalist, and they both worked with the truly one-of-a-kind composer Daniel Blumberg to create the scores for both of these films. Other than that, these films couldn’t be more different. The Testament of Ann Lee is actually a musical, featuring a few truly transcendent, mystical musical sequences of dancing through the forest and around their land. It’s the story of a religious leader and the creation of the religion she believed in, known as the Shakers, but it’s also the story of emancipation and escape and freedom from oppression. Unquestionably of the best films of the year – it’s extraordinary in every single way that cinema can be extraordinary. I need this soundtrack to listen to.

The Testament of Ann Lee, also known as simply Ann Lee, is the story of a real woman named Ann Lee – starring Amanda Seyfried in the lead role as this woman. Born in Manchester, England in 1736 during a time of the Evangelical revival in England, she married young and became pregnant. After 4 pregnancies, all of her children died before they turned 1 year old and this destroyed her. After this experience she turned to religion, helping create what is now known as the the Shaker Movement, preaching about the second coming of Christ as a woman – she came to be called Mother Ann. They were initially known as “Shaking Quakers” because of their ecstatic behavior during worship services. After being attacked by the English church at the time, her followers packed up and got on a ship and headed to the new colonies – America. There they settle in and establish a new home on a plot of land they find by taking a boat up the Hudson River. Of course it is a story about someone creating a religion out of completely made up beliefs (let’s be honest), however it’s also about a woman breaking free from the the shackles of the dominant religion and creating a new series of rules & ideas to live by – some of which were quite utopian & beautiful, including a love for the land and equality among all people of all kinds. It shares her life’s story in such a uniquely magical, transcendent way.

Ultimately this film isn’t really about religion or cults or how to get people to believe in nonsense. The story presented includes these things happening, but that’s not really the deeper meaning of this film. As someone who usually despises films about religion, I was delightfully lost in how much this is anything but. There are even moments where it seems Mother Ann herself (or at least Amanda Seyfried as Mother Ann) knows she’s spouting complete bullshit, but it doesn’t matter, because her whole point is staying true to the dogma of her Shaker religion – namely rejecting marriage and sex and so on. For obvious reasons – considering her early life at the time. At first, Ann Lee’s divine decision to create this religion is more of an of-the-times-she’s-in example of fabricating something to allow her to escape the patriarchal, misogynistic hell (of being forced to pop out babies) she was living in England at time. This was right around when a group of people fled to a new land to create what is now America to escape English religious persecution, so it makes sense she would try this, too. Eventually it also becomes a tale of how America is a rotten place as well. Aside from all of the slavery and racism and violence, she soon learns how much Americans (even in the late 1700s) actually hate others and don’t really want anyone else to be able to practice their own religion(s). Especially one that goes against their own views and is as blasphemous as the Shakers with their belief that marriage and sex is bad.

All of these layers of commentary, even more beyond just these two aspects, are beautifully worked into this magnificent piece of art. And it’s so mesmerizing and enchanting to get totally lost in and swept away by all the magic (and music and singing) of this film. Right from the start with a haunting musical opening with women dancing through the forest, all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, right up to the final days of Ann Lee as her colony in Niskayuna grows and her religion spreads, this is an bewitching film that showcases all of what makes cinema so special. It’s fun and clever and cinematically exciting. It’s about more than what it seems to be about. It’s carefully crafted, enhanced by the storytelling choices. As with The Brutalist, you can tell every single person involved in making this is fully in sync with the vision & the artistry of the filmmaker and everyone gave it their all to make this so magical. Best of all, Amanda Seyfried is absolutely outstanding leading the film preaching a best-of-her-career performance. Her complete devotion to this character, to the performance, to delivering emotion from the depths of her soul to make it believable, is astonishing and she absolutely deserves all the awards & accolades coming her way. She’s matched by supporting turns from Lewis Pullman, Thomasin McKenzie, David Cale (my favorite character), and Christopher Abbott.

Aside from the enchanting cinematography (shot by DP William Rexer on film) and wonderfully accurate period costumes & sets and all of the riveting performances, the music in this also swept me off my feet. All of the songs are incredible. Which I was not expecting, especially based on this story. And that score, THAT SCORE my goodness, Daniel Blumberg is quickly becoming one of my favorite composers up there with Göransson and Zimmer and Desplat. I cant wait to get a copy of this soundtrack. Of course all of the musical numbers are inspired by real Shaker hymns and chants, infused with modern composition. It’s a musical that doesn’t really feel like a musical, which is not an easy thing to accomplish. The musical numbers are integrated right into each scene as if this what the Shakers would be doing at this moment anyway right in the middle of their work day, dancing as part of their daily chores & religious activities. This film absolutely deserves its place in cinema history alongside The Brutalist. These films are two defining modern cinematic experiences and I believe we’ll still be talking about both of them, and both filmmakers, for decades to come.
