If you’re taking thyroid medication but still struggling to keep your hypothyroidism under control, you’re not alone. While prescription medicines are effective, their success can be influenced by several factors and understanding these influences can help ensure your treatment works as intended and keeps your thyroid levels balanced.

Dr Isha Arora, a Ludhiana-based endocrinologist and specialist in diabetes and hormonal health, explains how thyroid medications function, what factors can affect their effectiveness, and why they may sometimes fail to work as expected.

In an Instagram post on April 3, the endocrinologist outlines several factors – such as underlying health conditions, storage methods, and medication interactions – that could impact the effectiveness of your hypothyroidism treatment. She emphasises that regular check-ups, correct medication timing, and managing underlying conditions are essential for keeping hypothyroidism under control.

Why are your thyroid meds not working?

According to Dr Arora, “Uncontrolled hypothyroidism can result from even gastrointestinal disorders like celiac disease and atrophic gastritis, which impair thyroxine absorption.” Hypothyroidism is treated with prescription medication, but certain factors play a role in treatment, including how your thyroid medicines are absorbed in your body.

The endocrinologist mentions parameters such as where you store the medicine, how you take them, and interference from other medications, that influence the treatment of hypothyroidism.

Medication interferences

Dr Arora highlights, “Certain medicines, such as calcium supplements, iron tablets, antacids, and proton pump inhibitors, can reduce the absorption of thyroxine. Additionally, drugs like phenytoin, carbamazepine, and phenobarbital can accelerate thyroxine metabolism.”

Faulty storage

The endocrinologist warns against storing your thyroid medicines in the kitchen or fridge, since cold temperatures and humidity can affect their potency. She recommends, “Keep your thyroid meds away from heat, light, and humidity to maintain their effectiveness.”

Problem with intake

The timing and method of taking your thyroid medication can significantly influence how effectively it works in your body. Dr Arora stresses, “Tablet has to be taken in an empty stomach in the morning, with a gap of one hour between tablet intake and having tea or breakfast.”

Plastic surgeon shares if facial yoga can give the same result as cosmetic treatments and tighten your face naturally

The eternal quest for youthful skin! While natural approaches, like face yoga, can promote skin health, there is a perception that cosmetic treatments, like Botox, provide more dramatic and lasting results. Is it true? Facial yoga can help tighten your face naturally. However, as per doctors, diet, facial yoga, and collagen boosters can’t compete with clinical treatments, but they can support and maintain the body’s natural processes.(Pexels)

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, experts shared that diet, facial yoga, and collagen boosters can promote skin health; however, their effectiveness compared to clinical treatments — think Botox, fillers, or lasers — may be limited.

Dr Rachana Tataria, consultant, breast reconstruction and plastic surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, Mumbai, said, “Definitely, diet, facial yoga, and collagen boosters cannot compete with or give comparative results to clinical treatment. At the same time, anti-ageing procedures cannot substitute for a healthy lifestyle.”

According to Dr Raina Nahar, consultant dermatologist at PD Hinduja Hospital and MRC, Khar, Mumbai, diet and facial yoga, along with skin treatments, can give you the best benefits. She explained: “None of them can be independent of each other, especially without diet and a disciplined lifestyle. You cannot achieve the best treatments for even the skin sessions that we do, the procedures that we do. So this is mandatory and non-negotiable — you follow a diet which is rich in protein, protein as per the body weight requirement, depending on your physical activity.”

Best approach: combining natural, clinical methods

She added, “The aim of these overall — the holistic approach that you’re following or the skin treatments that you’re doing — is to stimulate the body to age gracefully, to slow down or delay the ageing process by stimulating collagen and elastin. These are the protein, fibres formed in the dermis which give you the tenacity, elasticity and youthful appearance; production of hyaluronic acid, your natural proteins, all these will hold water and give you that hydrated and tight skin.”

Dr Tataria explained that healthy eating, exercise, yoga, and supplements aim to support and maintain the body’s natural processes effectively. “Equally important are sufficient sleep, stress management, and avoiding habits like smoking and drinking. These can help you age well rather than focus on anti-ageing,” Dr Tataria said.

She went on to add: “Various clinical treatments, both surgical and nonsurgical, aim to improve and enhance the body’s features to a more youthful appearance. Diet and exercise work by improving biological age, increasing longevity, and enhancing the body’s immunity to age-related diseases via reducing oxidative stress and improving metabolic health. But they cannot reverse the existing age-related damage and changes. Anti-ageing procedures cannot help improve these dramatically through various procedures that are quick and effective, some with less or more downtime.”

Quick and effective results

Chemical peels, skin boosters, and anti-pigment medications can improve skin texture and quality. Face lifts, blepharoplasty, and neck lifts can address loose skin and volume loss. Dr Tataria shared that various non-surgical procedures available in India include chemical peels, skin boosters, and anti-pigment medications and can ‘help improve skin texture, quality and clear dark spots’.

She added, “Outpatient procedures like Botox, fillers, endolift, laser help with wrinkle and skin tightening treatment. Surgical procedures like face lift, blepharoplasty, neck lift, and fat grafting can help with ageing in people with loose skin and volume loss to a great extent.”

How to use diet as part of your anti-ageing routine?

A balanced diet rich in protein, fibre, and complex carbs supports skin health, Dr Nahar said and explained: “All of this is important. So if you are having three meals in a day, plan it according to 20 grams approximately of protein and 10 grams of fibre per meal. Include your essential fatty acids and complex carbs so that you can digest the protein very well. This will help you age slowly. The fibre will add to your gut bacteria again, which will help.”

She added, “When you are taking care of everything — your mental well-being, your gut — your skin will reflect the good health. So diet forms a very, very important part. It is basic, wholesome protocol for any good treatment, be it for your heart, for your kidney or for your skin. Diet forms the basis. It is the nutrition or the boost that you give.”

How to use facial yoga to look younger?

Dr Nahar further said, “The facial yoga that you’re doing will stimulate the muscles, improve your blood supply, improve the elasticity of your skin, and tighten your muscles. Also, along with that, you can do certain procedures that help you drain the lymphatic fluid in the skin. So, your lymphatic drainage, de-puffing, all this will help you get tighter skin. You will improve the elasticity, fluid retention, water retention, and muscle.”

Collagen boosters for youthful appearance

She added that while dietary collagen is difficult to obtain, consuming greens rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids can help slow down ageing. Asked if you need to add collagen to your diet after the age of 25, Dr Nahar said: “All foods have collagen. It is difficult to get that from the diet, but it can be in a lot of greens that you include in your diet. They will help you age gracefully — your fibre, your antioxidants, your omegas, all these will slow down your ageing process.”

She also shared how skin boosters, exosomes and such skincare procedures, help the skin: “They work directly when injected in the skin or applied on the skin. Some mesotherapy, mesoporation, and microneedling will directly stimulate your dermis to produce collagen, improve your hyaluronic acid, and water retention. So you’re directly doing procedures at the level that you want, and you’re anti-ageing. You cannot compare eating clean to doing an angioplasty. So, these two are independent, but when you combine the two — ‘I had to do the procedure, but along with that, I’m eating clean, I’m maintaining my lifestyle’ — you get the best benefits. We’re all going to age, but a clean diet, a good lifestyle like doing yoga, and treatments, along with skincare, are the way to go.”

‘Jeopardy!’ Fans React After James Bond Controversy & Shocking Result

[Warning: The following post contains MAJOR spoilers for the Friday, September 19, episode of Jeopardy!]

The September 19 episode of Jeopardy! was met with some controversy over a ruling on a James Bond clue. Continue reading to find out the results of the game and see if Paolo Pasco won for the eighth time.

Pasco, from San Diego, California, played against Hebah Uddin, from Long Island, New York, and Steven Olson, from Princeton, Illinois. The reigning champion had a seven-day total of $195,717.

Puzzle writer Pasco had the lead for the first 15 clues. Olson, a band director, found the Daily Double right before the first commercial break. He had $800 and wagered the allotted $1,000. In “Quick Chem,” the clue was “Atomic number 27, it’s used in EV batteries & when mixed with alumina, it’s a brilliant blue.” He answered correctly with “What is cobalt?”, bringing him to $1,800. Olson still maintained third place.

In the second half of the round, Pasco answered the clue “From an N64 game: ‘Recover the pirate helicopter & get to the bottom of this. You are licensed to kill’” in “From the Video Game Manual.” He said, “What is GoldenEye?”

Host Ken Jennings asked him to be more specific, and Pasco said, “James Bond: GoldenEye?” He was wrong.

Olsen then buzzed in and said, “What is 007 GoldenEye?”

“It pains me to say this because you were so close,” Ken Jennings said. “GoldenEye is the movie, GoldenEye 007 is the game.” They both lost $1,000 on that response.

“Terrible ruling,” a Reddit user said.

“GoldenEye absolutely should have been accepted, and “007 GoldenEye” probably should have been too. On the box art, the way the logo is stylized doesn’t clearly indicate whether the 007 is supposed to come before or after GoldenEye, and on the title screen, there’s no 007 at all; the in-game name of the game is just GoldenEye. The very first page of the manual before the table of contents, does say “Thank you for selecting the GOLDENEYE 007 Game Pak”, but the page that they got the quote in the clue from is titled THE GOLDENEYE STORY,” another commented.

“It’s absolutely ridiculous that neither Paolo’s nor Steven’s responses were accepted,” a third wrote.

By the end of the round, only $400 separated first and second place. Pasco had $4,000. Olson moved to second with $3,600. Uddin, a social media moderator and Ph.D. candidate, had $2,200.

Olson found the first DD in Double Jeopardy. He had the lead with $7,800 and wagered $4,000. In “Let’s Go To The Park,” the clue read, “The world’s tallest animal is so common there that Nyerere National Park has been nicknamed this, punning on a dino-franchise.” “What is Giraffic Park?” was the correct response. Olson improved to $11,800.

He continued to dominate the round, surpassing Pasco by a lot. Olson then found the last DD. With $13,400 in his bank, he wagered $2,000. In “Your Prime Number’s Up,” the clue was “The highest 2-digit prime, it needs 4 syllables in French & 5 letters in Roman numerals.” At the last second, he guessed, “What is 97?” and moved to $15,400.

Olson led with $17,400 by the end of the round. Pasco had $9,800. Uddin was in last place with $4,600. Could Final Jeopardy be Pasco’s saving grace?

The category for Final Jeopardy was “Slogans.” “After adopting ‘Very Nice’ in tourism ads, an official of this country said its people, ‘jokes to the contrary, are some of the nicest,’” was the clue. The correct response was Kazakhstan, a reference from the movie, Borat.

Uddin wrote, “What is Canada?” She was wrong and dropped down to $2,600 after wagering $2,000. Pasco wrote, “What is Kazakhstan? (I liiiiike!)).” He was right and wagered $7,601, giving him $17,401, $1 more than Olson’s current total. However, Olson also got the answer right and wagered $2,202, giving him a final total of $19,602. He became the new winner, taking down Pasco. Olson will return on Monday, September 22.
