Neurosurgeon with 33 years of experience explains why you can’t sleep even when tired, shares 4 tips to rest better

by jummy84 October 22, 2025
written by jummy84

Are you counting sheep as you lie in bed, super exhausted, yawning, but for some reason, sleep continues to evade you? You toss and turn, checking how much time you have left before the morning alarm rings. It may feel ironic that despite being worn out, your mind is anything but that, buzzing and rather frustrated with the inability to sleep on time. This association that exhaustion automatically means quicker sleep may not always work. If exhausting yourself to sleep was your tactic, maybe, from the mental fatigue of reading a boring academic book, you need a more well-rounded strategy to fix this issue.

If you are unable to sleep despite being exhausted, your daytime habits are to blame. (Picture credit: Shutterstock)

Dr Prashant Katakol, a neurosurgeon with over 33 years of experience, shared in an Instagram video, posted on October 22, addressing this common challenge of sleep. He shed light on an interesting root cause. “Why do you find it difficult to fall asleep even when you are exhausted? As a neurosurgeon, I will tell you how your daytime habits are ruining your nights,” he said. This means your choices during the day determine how well you sleep at night. The neurosurgeon suggested 4 tips for modifying daily activities which make you sleepy at night.

1. Walk more

One of the culprits is prolonged inactivity. Many people sit for long hours during the day, whether at the office on weekdays or lounging on the couch bingewatching over the weekends. Dr Katakol shed light on this aspect, saying, “Walk more than you sit during the day.”

2. Dim the lights

“Once the sun sets, lower the lights around,” the neurosurgeon advised. It’s important to dim the light before bedtime. This involves switching from bright overhead lights to warm bedside lamps.

3. No screens before bedtime

Life is hectic, rushing in the morning, grabbing anything within reach for breakfast, grinding it out at the office, pushing for deadlines and attending meeting after meeting. The chase is simply relentless. So often, people consider evening as their downtime, catching up on TV shows or vapid doomscrolling. But this stretches all the way up to bedtime or even beyond.

The neurosurgeon flagged this habit and emphasised, “Put your screens away 3 hours before your bedtime.”

4. Early dinner

The last fix Dr Katakol recommended was having an early breakfast.“Finish your dinner early, ideally before sunset and take a 20-minute walk subsequently,” he advised. This habit lowers digestive discomfort. What happens is that when one eats dinner too close to bedtime, the digestive process is disturbed. To improve digestion, as the neurosurgeon shared, it’s vital to go for brief walks so that the stomach doesn’t feel bloated in bed. And when your stomach is heavy, you are likely to toss and turn more.

Neurosurgeon Dr Katakol’s advice is to continue these habits ‘sincerely’ to see the results. In others, you will have to be consistent with these healthy changes to sleep better.

Evan Dando Finally Puts Those Courtney Love Rumors to Rest

by jummy84 October 6, 2025
written by jummy84

On July 21, 1994 – just three months after Kurt Cobain‘s suicide – a photo of Courtney Love kissing. Lemonheads frontman Evan Dando in a hotel room bed ran in the New York Post and quickly spread across the globe. “Merry widow Courtney Love was recently photographed sharing a passionate kiss with singer Evan Dando of the Lemonheads,” read a report that week in the National Enquirer. “As Courtney kissed Dando, she was clutching a teddy bear [filled] with Kurt’s ashes.”

The provocative image created the perception that Dando and Love were having an affair. The rumors continued once Dando was photographed wearing some of Cobain’s old sweaters onstage at Lemonheads concerts.

In his new book Rumors of My Demise: A Memoir (out October 7 via Simon & Schuster), Dando finally puts the issue to rest by detailing the full context behind the notorious photo, and that extremely tumultuous time in his life when the Lemonheads were pegged as the next Nirvana. “His memoir will remind readers what was so great about the pre-internet Nineties: the innocence, the access, and the anonymity,” reads.a synopsis. “Reclaiming the purity and exuberance of his early days and encapsulating the spirit of the era, this candid autobiography presents a portrait of an artist who lives wholly for his music, and one that makes no apologies for doing so.”

In this exclusive excerpt, Dando reveals the true story of his relationship with Love, how the rumors spread, and the regrets he holds to this day.

Things got warped beyond belief after Kurt’s death. A lot of people thought that something was going on between me and Courtney, including many of our mutual friends, which fanned the flames of the rumor. If even my friends thought we were having an affair, then the rumors had to be true, right?

Wrong. A lot of people thought we slept together while we were on tour. Courtney tried to make that happen, but I didn’t go for it. Nothing happened between us, but she told people that it had, and they believed her.

Editor’s picks

I reached out to Pat Smear, who’d been brought in to play with Nirvana, to ask him something that had been bothering me.

“Did Kurt think Courtney was cheating on him with me?” I asked.

“Yeah, man,” Pat said. “He thought you and Courtney were having an affair.”

“He didn’t really think I’d do that to him, did he?”

“Afraid so.”

Oh god, I thought. Kurt went to his death thinking I’d slept with Courtney.

Pat was a friend of mine. I was in awe of him. He told me he’d tried to reassure Kurt there was nothing going on, but apparently Kurt wasn’t convinced. Even though things got weird toward the end, deep down I think Kurt was a good person. Just knowing Kurt was carrying that with him when he died was deeply upsetting to me.

***

Courtney was fixated on me, but she wasn’t the only one. It was always strange. It happened again when Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill put out a zine called My Life with Evan Dando, Popstar. The zine reflected her frustration with the media, to which I could certainly relate, but I wasn’t offended by it, but her fans thought it was an attack on me and felt obligated to take action and mobilize a protest against me. Riot Grrrls would come to my shows and not enjoy themselves as a statement. They’d stand around in groups and yell, “Evan Dando sucks!”

Related Content

The funny thing was they didn’t do this outside. They bought tickets and did it during the show. As long as you pay your way in, you can protest all you want.

Kathleen and I actually knew each other. We’d met by chance at the Portobello Road market in London. We literally bumped into each other and hung out for a while. It was totally cool and completely innocent, but you’d never know that reading the zine. She was using her imagination. It just had very little to do with our encounter that day.

By the way, My Life with Evan Dando wasn’t the only anti–Evan Dando zine on the market. Die Evan Dando, Die beat Kathleen Hanna to the punch. When people don’t like me, they go out of their way to make their feelings known. I can relate. Sometimes I don’t like me either.

***

The second time I didn’t sleep with Courtney, I was hanging out with her the summer after Kurt died. She was supposed to go on the aptly titled Live Through This Tour, but the death of her bass player, Kristen Pfaff, made that impossible.

People in the scene kept slipping away, mostly from drug overdoses. In terms of my own drug use, I was very much in denial. I did a lot of drugs with Courtney the summer after Kurt died.

I’d say something like “We’ll party after the show.”

“What we’re onto is way beyond partying. You shouldn’t even call it partying,” Courtney said.

She was right, but I wasn’t ready to admit that I had a habit, that I looked forward to that first shot of the day a little too much, that the only time I felt right with the world was when I was high. Those realizations were coming, but in the summer of 1994, they were still a long way off.

Courtney kept trying to make something happen between us. I would tell her no and she would sulk about it for a while and I’d avoid her. Then she’d ask me for a small favor, the kind that any friend would do, especially after what she’d been through, and I’d do it. I felt bad about rejecting her all the time considering the terrible situation she was in.

She was grieving. Maybe she felt the bullshit she had to deal with from the media and the fans couldn’t possibly be worse. People were literally stalking her and showing up at her house at night. It was a horrible situation, and I cared about her as a friend. I wanted to be there for Courtney during this very dark time. That’s how I fell into her trap.

“Here, take this,” she said one night, handing me a bag.

“What is it?” I asked.

“Some of Kurt’s clothes. I want you to have them.”

“Why are you giving this to me?”

“Everything is so fucked right now. Just take it.”

So I did. I didn’t think it was strange at first. I thought Courtney was giving Kurt’s stuff away to keep his possessions in her circle of friends rather than have them disappear and show up for sale somewhere. Everyone wanted a piece of Kurt. I took the clothes, and I wore them occasionally. There was a ratty-looking trench coat that I wore onstage a few times and a blue cardigan sweater. One thing that bands from the Northeast shared with bands from the Northwest was an appreciation for a good sweater.

At the time, I didn’t understand how famous Kurt’s sweaters were. There was a whole field of sweater detectives who kept track of all the different sweaters he wore. Eventually, I wised up to the fact that Courtney wanted me to be seen wearing Kurt’s clothes. I’m pretty sure the sweater Courtney gave me is the one he’s wearing on the back of the greatest hits album. In the pantheon of Kurt’s sweaters, it’s up there. Courtney knew what she was doing when she gave it to me.

Then there was the bear.

Courtney had a stuffed teddy bear in which she kept Kurt’s ashes. It was part teddy bear, part backpack, so she could carry it around her wherever she went. At first, I liked the bear. I liked knowing that Kurt was close, but eventually it started to give me the creeps.

A bunch of us were in Courtney’s hotel room in Manhattan. It was me, Courtney, and some members of Juliana’s band. It wasn’t a party, but people were partying.

“Let’s take a picture together,” Courtney said.

“Okay.”

“Let’s pretend like we’re making out.”

I didn’t want to do it. We were on her bed and even though there were lots of people around and nothing intimate was happening, I knew people would get the wrong idea if they saw the photo. It was just an awkward situation, and I wanted no part of it.

“I don’t want to,” I said.

“Come on, Evan! It will be funny in fifteen years.”

I shook my head, but she wouldn’t let the matter drop.

“Come on, do it!”

Finally, it got to the point where I felt like it would be less strange if I just did it than her asking me over and over again. It was my camera, and I figured no harm would come of it if no one ever saw the photo.

“All right,” I relented.

I pressed my lips against hers and someone took the picture. Our lips barely touched, like the way you’d kiss a close friend or relative.

Anyway, like so many other things, I forgot all about my kiss with Courtney. I didn’t even think about it when my camera went missing a few days later. A bunch of us were staying in the hotel to support Courtney and our stuff was spread out in different rooms. I figured it would turn up eventually.

About a week later the photo of me and Courtney kissing in bed was splashed all over the New York Post. Even though you can tell the photo is posed, there was a huge uproar over it. People were not cool with that photo. Fans felt like it was disrespectful to Kurt’s memory, and it made me look like a sleaze ball who was taking advantage of Courtney during a vulnerable period of her life.

That was the best-case scenario. For some, that photo was proof that the rumors Courtney had been spreading about us were true and that I was a first-class scumbag. I figured it was someone working at the hotel, or someone posing as a hotel worker. Paparazzi spy tactics. Real cloak-and-dagger shit.

Later, someone told me that Courtney sent the photo to the tabloids herself, which made me sad. I wanted to believe that she wouldn’t pull a stunt like that. I think on some level we all care what people think about us.

When you’re the subject of intense media scrutiny, you have to figure out a way not to care or you’ll go crazy. But this was different. Courtney was trying to plant an idea that simply wasn’t true. It wasn’t fair and it wasn’t cool and there was no getting away from it.

Unfortunately, I’ll always be a part of the sad, strange story of Kurt and Courtney. That photo implicated me in all kinds of conspiracy theories about Kurt’s death, which persist to this day.

Even Courtney’s father insinuated as much in Nick Broomfield’s documentary.

Trending Stories

My real friends know what happened, but Kurt’s fans, Courtney’s fans, and some of my own fans were mad at me. Even though I’ve told the story many times, people still think that I had something to do with the circumstances that led to Kurt’s death. I felt like the only thing I could do was run away.

Flavor Flav is determined to stay sober for the rest of his life

The 66-year-old rapper, born William Jonathan Drayton Jr., has made the declaration months after admitting to a relapse in April.

He told People magazine about his continuing sobriety journey: “Right now it’s going very well. I’m back on point. I’m back on track, you know what I’m saying?

“And this is the way that I plan on staying for the rest of my life.”

He also offered advice to others struggling with addiction.

Flavor added: “If you take a fall, don’t lay there and stay stuck. You got to get up off of that fall and you have to K-I-M — keep it moving.

“Operation no choice is now in progress. Either you keep it moving, or you stay stuck. And the name of the game is to keep it moving.”

In April, Flavor told fans on Instagram he had “briefly relapsed”, adding he wanted to make the admission publicly to “hold myself accountable”.

In a message to his followers he wrote: “I remain authentic to who I am and a large part of the past 4.5 years for me has been my sobriety journey.

“I think I’ve been an inspiration to many that if I could get sober, anyone can do it. But just when you think it’s easy, it ain’t. I briefly relapsed.

“I say this to admit my mistake and publicly hold myself accountable. I am a human being who makes mistakes and it doesn’t make me a bad person.

“I hope those who are around me support my choice to be sober.”

He added: “I went back to Day 1, again. Time didn’t stop, my journey continues.”

In a 2023 interview on the Off the Record with DJ Akademiks podcast, Flavor said he had once spent “$2,400 to $2,600 a day … for six years straight” on drugs.

He admitted much of his drug use was kept “hidden”, though he said he maintained his outward appearance “very well” despite addiction.

Flavor began his sobriety journey in 2020.

Speaking on the same podcast, he added: “I guess God wanted me to live. And he knows that I’m a mouthpiece to the world.

“So, I feel that God let me live through that, so that way, I could teach people about the mistakes that I made. And hopefully, they won’t make them later on in life.”

In October 2024, to mark World Mental Health Day and the four-year anniversary of his sobriety, Flavor said: “My mental health is an important part of my sobriety journey.”

He marked the occasion by covering the cost of therapy app subscriptions for fans.

Fitness coach reveals 5 ways to ‘get enough protein for the rest of your life’: Identify better sources to supplements | Health

by jummy84 August 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Protein has become a cult classic among fitness enthusiasts because of its non-negotiable role in strengthening muscles, supporting bone health, and maintaining energy levels. And even otherwise, protein’s mention for maintaining good health is quite widespread. But here’s a reality check- your protein intake needs to be sustainable, it’s not just about a few months, but about building a natural dietary habit that lasts for decades, becoming a seamless part of everyday life.

Try to add protein in your every meal.(Shutterstock)

So how do you go about it, making it a normal instinct so that you stop treating it as a chore and instead naturally include it in your daily routine?

Fitness coach Raj Ganpath, who regularly shares fitness tips with his Instagram community, in an August 20 post, addressed this concern many people may have. To make regular protein intake sustainable across decades, he highlighted some strategies that simplify it over time.

Here are the 5 strategies Raj listed:

1. Every meal should have some form of protein

The first step is to make protein a part of your regular meals, not like an addition, but fundamentally integral to the dish you have, irrespective of what you eat and where you eat.

The coach added, “Make sure your every meal you eat contains some form of protein. What protein doesn’t matter, how much doesn’t matter- just make sure there is some form of protein in any meal that you eat.”

Protein should not be skipped, and it’s important to include it in some form at every meal, wherever you are. He said, “It could be breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack at home, outside in your city, outside your city, does not matter- make sure it is a part of your meal.”

2. Get accustomed to better protein sources

The next step is to ensure you are choosing the right sources. Raj advised identifying the right sources, depending on whether you are veg or non-veg.

He elaborated, “Identify protein sources that are actually rich in protein, based on your dietary constraints and make them a part of your day. For instance, if you are a meat eater, eggs, meat, sea food all that is great. But if you are a vegetarian, you need to eat low-fat cheeses, tofu, tempeh, soya chunks, things like that. You may not be used to it but try to identify them and include them, get used to them.”

Often vegetarians, especially Indians, struggle with low protein intake as the sources are commonly thought to be pulses, but they may not be sufficient. This is why Raj stressed the fact that you need to adjust to the protein sources as per your dietary restrictions, even if foods like tempeh, tofu are new to you.

3. Protein not as a side to your main dish

Are you the one who includes boiled eggs alongside your main plate, holding your nose, and quickly eating them just to get it over with? If so, one reason your protein intake may fall short is that protein is treated as a side dish. The fitness coach also pointed out this issue.

He said, “Make these protein-rich options a part of your meal, not just a side where you are force-fitting it into your meal. That means don’t create a protein-free meal and then have protein on the side and think okay, I just have to somehow eat the protein, then I can enjoy my protein-free meal.”

Suggesting the solution, he continued, “Instead, try and make it a part of the meal, how do you include it in the recipes, that is the only way to make a part of your life in the long term.”

So instead, try adding egg or whatever protein you have as one of the ingredients, like egg bhurji with green veggies to pair with your ragi roti.

4. Supplement when necessary

Now there are possibilities of falling behind your recommended protein intake despite diligent meal planning. Raj suggested taking a supplement to fill this gap.

He said, “If you are doing the first three steps and you are still not getting enough protein, you most definitely should supplement. This is precisely why supplements exist. So don’t fight it. Don’t overthink it. Try to get protein from real food if you are not able to supplement wisely.”

5. Track but don’t obsess

While tracking your protein makes you aware of the protein amount you are consuming every day, hyperfixating on it may backfire. The fitness coach warned that constantly counting every last protein gram. It will just make you paranoid.

Raj said,“You should know how much protein you are getting. It is important because you are not getting enough of it, so maybe once a month or once in two months, do a breakdown and understand how much protein you are getting in grams, but don’t get into the habit of counting protein grams every day.”

He instead suggested including protein in every meal, adopting a structure rather than measuring the numbers all the time. And every couple of months, the daily meals’ protein amount can be checked, not every other day.
