Bob Dylan’s Publisher Seemingly Responsible for Takedown of Zohran Mamdani’s “Times They Are a-Changin’” Ad

On the eve of his New York mayoral election victory, Zohran Kwame Mamdani posted an ad on social media soundtracked by Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are a-Changin’.” The video, like much of Mamdani’s campaign, went viral, as its “New York is a-changin’” slogan rapidly spread across social media. By the following morning, however, it had been removed from X with a takedown notice: “This media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright holder.” Unsurprisingly, this was not a snub by Dylan himself but an apparent decision by Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG), The New York Times reports. In a statement, UMPG, which acquired Dylan’s songwriting catalog in 2020, said, “As a longstanding policy, we do not license Bob Dylan compositions for projects involving political figures.”

The publishing company has previously denied a request by the Mamdani campaign to license the song, The Times reports, citing two anonymous sources briefed on the matter. UMPG did not explicitly say it had ordered the ad’s removal; copyright violations are sometimes detected electronically, prompting automatic takedowns. As of Thursday morning (November 6), the video is still available on Instagram and TikTok.

Ajith said, “I’m not trying to put anybody down, but like I say, there’s so much happening in Tamil Nadu today because of this stampede that happened. That individual (Vijay) alone is not responsible; we are all responsible for it, and I think even the media has a part to play in this. Today I think we have become a society that’s so obsessed with gathering a crowd, to show your crowd. All this has to end.”

He said that there are certain ways in which fans can express their love. “I mean, you have a crowd that goes for a cricket match, you don’t see all this happening there, do you? Why is it happening only in theatres? Why is it only happening with celebrities, film personalities? So, what happens? It projects the whole film industry, world over, in a bad light. I mean, even Hollywood actors or we don’t wish this. We want that love and that’s what we work hard for…There are ways you can express your love.”

‘It Is Wrong To Held Sportsperson Responsible’, Suniel Shetty On Ongoing India Vs Pakistan Match Controversy

The Asia Cup 2025 has officially begun, and one of its most awaited matches, India versus Pakistan began on September 14. Traditionally, an India-Pakistan game is nothing less than a high-voltage cricketing spectacle, where every run, wicket, and moment grips millions of fans across the globe. However, this time, the atmosphere is overshadowed by political and emotional sentiments following recent terror attacks.

Suniel Shetty

Earlier this year, India witnessed two major tragedies: the Pulwama attack and the Pahalgam terror strike in April. The incidents left the nation enraged, and even after India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor, the wounds remain fresh. Against this backdrop, a section of people on social media have demanded a boycott of the high-profile match, arguing that cricketing ties with Pakistan should not continue under such circumstances. Bollywood celebrities have also weighed in.

Raveena Tandon

Actress Raveena Tandon shared her thoughts on X, writing, “Okay, the match has started. I hope our team will play wearing a black band and will kneel before victory.” Her post reflected the emotions of many who believe the match should symbolize solidarity with the martyrs. Veteran actor Suniel Shetty, however, offered a balanced perspective. Speaking to the media, he said that while individuals are free to have their opinions about the India-Pakistan clash, it is unfair to hold the players or sporting bodies responsible.

He emphasized that such tournaments are organized by international federations involving multiple nations and athletes, and the rules of the game must be respected. According to him, the players’ role is to represent their country with pride, and they should not be blamed for political situations beyond their control. Shetty further clarified that choosing to watch or skip the match should be a personal decision, not a collective compulsion. He urged fans to avoid spreading negativity and to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship.
