Jimmy Kimmel Remembers His Longtime Bandleader Cleto Escobedo III

by jummy84 November 12, 2025
written by jummy84

Jimmy Kimmel is paying tribute to Cleto Escobedo III, his childhood best friend and longtime bandleader for his late night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, who died on Tuesday at 59.

During his 22-minute monologue (below), which he called his “hardest” to date, the host recalled tons of memories he shared with Escobedo over the years. The pair became best friends as children after Kimmel’s family moved in across the street from Escobedo’s home in Las Vegas. Once Kimmel later landed his show at ABC in 2003, he brought Escobedo and his band, Cleto and the Cletones, along since the beginning.

“We had so many adventures,” Kimmel said through tears during Tuesday’s show. “We would laugh so hard. We had our own language that almost no one else understood. We didn’t have to say anything. We’d sit here at rehearsal every day. We didn’t have to look at each other. I knew he was thinking about looking at me and I was thinking about looking at him. We look at each other like this and that would be it.”

Kimmel continued, “We loved all the same things. Baseball, fishing, boxing, [Muhammad] Ali, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Woody Allen, Michael McDonald, Huey Lewis, Stevie Wonder, and most of all, we love David Letterman. We never missed David Letterman. And the first time I was on the [Late Show with David Letterman] was in 1999. It was a really big deal for both of us. That afternoon before the show, I was so nervous. I was walking in New York City, just walking fast, trying to burn off the nervous energy, and I called him just so we could be amazed together that this was happening and it was an amazing thing.”

The comedian went on to praise how “phenomenal” a saxophone player Escobedo was from a young age: “He was a child prodigy who would get standing ovations in junior high school, if you can imagine that.” And once ABC hired Kimmel to host Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he knew he had to bring his best friend along for the journey.

“One day in September of 2002, I got a talk show just out of nowhere. I had a meeting with an executive at ABC named Lloyd Braun and he hired me to host this show. And when you do a show like this, you need a few things. You need a desk, you need an announcer, you need a Guillermo and you need a band. And of course, I wanted Cleto to lead my band,” Kimmel explained. “The idea that anyone other than him would lead the band was terrifying. It had to be him. I was so scared they would say no and I would have to have another band.”

Kimmel eventually found the courage to pitch the idea to ABC, and said Escobedo and his father ended up auditioning for the job together.

“Not only did I want Cleto to lead the band, I wanted his dad to be in the band. So, I pitched it to Lloyd,” he recalled. “Cleto and his dad did a special song. They played ‘Pick Up the Pieces’ by the Average White Band, which is two saxophones. And Lloyd saw it. He saw the father and son together. He said, ‘I love it.’ And he just got up and left. And we’ve been working together every day for almost 23 years now.”

An emotional Kimmel added, “I’ve often said that the single best thing about doing this show was getting the opportunity to allow Cleto Senior to pick up where he left off in 1966 and become a musician again with his son.”

The host continued to express how much “everyone loves Cleto,” and that “everyone here at the show, we are devastated.” He also noted that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be taking a few nights off following Escobedo’s death.

“Even though I’m heartbroken to lose him,” a teary-eyed Kimmel continued, “I’m going to take yet another lesson from him and acknowledge how lucky I was to have him literally at my side for so many years.”

Prue Leith remembers Queen Elizabeth’s pride at inventing dorgi after royal pets hook-up

Queen Elizabeth was very proud to have accidentally created a new dog breed through a “secret liaison” between two royal pets, Dame Prue Leith has revealed.

Queen Elizabeth with one of beloved pet dogs at Sandringham House in 1970

The dorgi hybrid occurred in the 1970s when one of the Queen’s corgis, Tiny, had a private moment with a dachsund named Pipkin, who belonged to the monarch’s sister Princess Margaret, and the two siblings were so enamoured with the pups the tryst produced that they began breeding the pooches.

Great British Bake Off judge Prue can recall a meeting with the Queen and her husband Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace years ago where the late monarch shared her pride at having played a part in creating a new breed of dog that was officially recognised by The Kennel Club, the UK organisation that runs the Crufts international dog show.

Appearing on the Making A Scene podcast, Prue revealed: “One day I was asked to lunch at Buckingham Palace with Prince Philip and the Queen and they had two or three other people from the Palace and then they had six guests. I think this was the idea of getting the royals to meet the people. There was an Olympic sportsman, the Archbishop of Canterbury and various people – so there was a mixture of posh people and ordinary people.

“This flunky told us at the beginning it’s not the done thing to initiate a conversation with the royals. Of course, I forgot that.

“So the Queen came in and she was surrounded by little dogs. I immediately said, ‘Oh, how wonderful ma’am you’ve brought the corgis to lunch.’ She said, ‘They’re not corgis, they’re dorgis.’ Then we had a long conversation about her breeding programme and how one of her dogs had a secret liaison with a dachshund, and so the produce of this union was one half corgi, half dachshund and so she adored this dorgi and so she started to breed dorgis. She was very excited because she said The Kennel Club had just agreed that this was a recognised breed.”

TV chef Prue, 85, admits it is a cherished memory and it came from a conversation she would never have instigated if she didn’t decide to ignore royal protocol.

She added: “So I had this proper conversation with her about something completely you don’t think you’re going to talk about to the royals. I would never have done if I wasn’t just clumsy.”

During her lifetime, Queen Elizabeth – who passed away in September 2022 at the age of 96 – was a committed dog lover and had many corgis and dorgis with a variety of fun names that included Cider, Rum, Berry, Candy, Brandy, Chipper, Harris, Pickles, Piper, Tinker, Vulcan and Fergus.

The former monarch was also Patron of the Dogs Trust dog welfare organization in the UK and her children and grandchildren inherited her love of canine companions.

King Charles and his wife Queen Camilla have a Lagotto Romagnolo named Snuff and a rescue dog called Mole as pets.

Charles’ son Prince William and his wife Princess Catherine have a pet cocker spaniel named Orla, who is the niece of their late dog Lupo, who passed away in November 2020.

Shilpa Shetty Channels Her Inner Chandni As She Remembers Sridevi With Love And Respect | Glamsham.com

Bollywood diva Shilpa Shetty Kundra recently turned heads on social media as she paid a heartfelt tribute to the late legendary actress Sridevi. Dressed in a radiant yellow chiffon saree reminiscent of Sridevi’s iconic Chandni look, Shilpa beautifully recreated the magic of Yash Chopra’s classic romantic musical.

Channelling the Spirit of ‘Chandni’

Taking to Instagram, Shilpa shared a graceful reel video from a photoshoot where she can be seen posing in the bright yellow saree, evoking the timeless elegance of Sridevi’s Chandni. The reel was accompanied by the instrumental title track of the 1989 film, which added to the nostalgic charm.

Captioning the post, Shilpa penned: “My Ode to my forever OG Sriji #Chandni #Chandnivibes.” admirers deluged the comment box with compliments, complimenting Shilpa for her beauty and for keeping alive the memory of one of Bollywood’s finest legends.

Chandni: The Film That Defined a Generation

Directed by Yash Chopra, Chandni became a benchmark in Indian cinema. The film, released in 1989, had Sridevi playing the central character of Chandni Mathur, a vivacious and romantic woman torn between two lovers—played by Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna. Supporting actors were also some of the celebrated ones such as Waheeda Rehman, Anupam Kher, and Sushma Seth.

Chandni marked a change of heart for Yash Chopra, who had lost out on action films. Going back to his roots, Chopra produced a romantic musical that became a classic. The film was characterized by its heroine-oriented script, rich emotions, and melodious music, songs picturized in exotic overseas locations—initiating the “Yash Chopra style” which would be the hallmark for decades to come.

On the Work Front

Following her starring role in the 2023 movie Sukhee, a slice-of-life drama detailing a woman finding herself again over the course of seven days, Shilpa Shetty is set for her next biggie. She can be seen next in the forthcoming Kannada action drama KD: The Devil, helmed by Prem.

The movie boasts the lead role of Dhruva Sarja, supported by an impressive cast featuring Sanjay Dutt, V. Ravichandran, Ramesh Aravind, Reeshma Nanaiah, and Nora Fatehi. Shilpa’s character in the film remains a secret but is likely to infuse the action-packed storyline with the same energy and presence she has come to be known for.
