Time Has Come for the Penny—Luckily, the Penny Loafer Remains

by jummy84 November 15, 2025
written by jummy84

It’s official: The penny is on its way out. After 232 years, they’re cancelling it, literally. It matters little that they cost three times as much to mint, or that few of us still keep single cents in our wallets—in our heart of hearts, they’ll always belong on the vamp of a great loafer, even after they disappear from circulation.

Vogue’s Favorite Penny Loafers

The penny loafer has been a fixture of American style since the 1930s, when G.H. Bass introduced the “Weejun,” a Scandinavian-inspired slip-on with a tidy little slot just big enough for a coin. Students slipped in pennies for good luck and a cultural icon was born. Penny loafers eventually came to define everything from Ivy League dressing to ’90s minimalism.

Nearly a century later, the shoe’s appeal is broader than ever. The best loafers for women are a true wardrobe workhorse: genderless, ageless, and endlessly adaptable. Fashion insiders wear them with puddled trousers and oversized knits; celebrities sport them year-round with jeans and knits, and preps still swear by a traditional black or oxblood pair that goes with everything.

Part of the loafer’s magic is its range. It can skew crisp and collegiate or subversively cool, polished enough for the office yet relaxed enough for weekend errands. The best penny loafers for women make an excellent anchor for tailoring, dresses, stiff denim, or slouchy layers.

If the demise of the penny has you feeling sentimental, or maybe even a little shortchanged, consider this your excuse to revisit the timeless style it helped make famous. You might need to look elsewhere for a little luck, but as far as penny loafers go, the below are worth every cent.

In for a Penny, in for a Pound

The classic penny loafer, of course, looks great with other staples like a bomber jacket, jeans, and button-ups.

A Pretty Penny

For a cheeky yet mature take on the school-girl skirt and shoes, wear a pleated skirt that hits mid-calf with Miu Miu’s heeled loafers. A suede jacket and a turtleneck take the outfit into fall.

See a Penny, Pick it Up

Timeless with a preppy twist: mix suiting separates with a plaid button-up and black leather penny loafers.

A Penny for Your Thoughts

Rich burgundy loafers pair well with cozy textured clothes, like a knit dress, chunky socks, and a lush camel topper.

When the Penny Drops

Mix a hint of collegiate charm with cool off-duty separates (track pants, hoodie, cap) for a balanced take on high-low dressing.

The Girlfriend box office collection day 4: Rashmika Mandanna’s film maintains momentum with the surge of positive word of mouth.

The Girlfriend box office collection day 4: Rashmika Mandanna and Dheekshith Shetty’s much-awaited film, The Girlfriend, finally released in theatres on Friday and opened to largely positive reviews from the audience, but mixed reviews from critics. Now, after a decent weekend, the film has managed to maintain its momentum on its first Monday.

The Girlfriend box office collection day 4: Rashmika Mandanna’s film fails to maintain momentum.

The Girlfriend box office performance on first Monday

According to Sacnilk, the film saw growth over the weekend, collecting ₹2.4 crore and ₹2.7 crore on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, due to good word of mouth. However, it saw a slight drop on Monday and collected ₹1.10 crore. Now, the film’s total stands at ₹7.50 crore.

The Girlfriend had an overall 18.55% Telugu occupancy, with 14.61% in morning shows, 22.55% in afternoon shows and 18.49% in evening shows. The film is also facing tough competition from Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi’s Haq in the Hindi belt.

About The Girlfriend

Written and directed by Rahul Ravindran, it tells the story of postgraduate student Bhooma Devi (Rashmika), who is gaslighted into falling in love with Vikram (Dheekshith), the college stud. She soon finds herself in a toxic situation she cannot seem to extract herself from. Produced by Dheeraj Mogilneni and Vidya Koppineni, the film also features Anu Emmanuel and Rao Ramesh in key roles.

Talking about directing Rashmika and Dheekshith, filmmaker Rahul told HT in 2024, “The amount of faith she has given me as a director… the way she has dived in and given her everything, it has been an absolute pleasure to work with her. I am good at ensuring that my actors have a comfortable working environment, and I adapt to work with them. But with Rashmika, our natural instincts just fit well together. Dheekshith is so motivated and driven that having him on set has been a joy.”

by Alex Billington

“Only normal people with normal feelings & normal problems. Ahh I love this film!! Janus Films debuted the first US trailer for an Icelandic dark comedy film titled The Love That Remains, a sly break up movie from Hlynur Pálmason. This premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year & was one of the best films of the fest – it also recently played at NYFF. Anna, an artist, and Magnús, a fisherman, live with their three children & charismatic sheepdog in the quiet grandeur of the Icelandic countryside. As fractures in their marriage come to the surface, the couple try to hold onto the afterimages of a life together and make sense of a deep & lingering devotion. Filmmaker Hlynur Pálmason (also of the immaculate Godland) brings surprising humor and emotional weight to this gorgeous, intimate, and brilliantly expansive scenes from a marriage, amidst the majestic backdrop of the changing seasons. Starring Saga Garðarsdóttir, Sverrir Guðnason, Ída, Mekkín Hlynsdóttir, Grímur Hlynsson, Þorgils Hlynsson, Ingvar Sigurðsson, Anders Mossling. And Panda the doggie. I’m lucky to be quoted in this trailer and on the poster! It’s also Iceland’s official selection for Best International Feature Film for this year’s Oscars. What a brilliant trailer.

Here’s the first US trailer (+ poster) for Hlynur Pálmason’s film The Love That Remains, from YouTube:

Zubeen Garg’s Mortal Remains To Return To Assam After Post-Mortem In Singapore

by jummy84 September 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has shared a detailed update regarding the repatriation of singer Zubeen Garg’s mortal remains, who tragically passed away in Singapore at the age of 52. Zubeen, one of Assam’s most beloved cultural icons, died on Friday while in Singapore to perform at the North East Festival.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), CM Sarma confirmed that Singaporean authorities have scheduled a post-mortem examination of the late singer. “We expect this to conclude by 2 PM SGT (11:30 AM IST). Thereafter, his mortal remains will be handed over to Indian authorities, and we shall begin the process of bringing him home,” the Chief Minister posted.

I am in constant touch with the High Commissioner of India H.E Dr Shilpak Ambule.

We are coordinating to ensure beloved Zubeen’s mortal remains return to Assam at the earliest. As soon as the process is firmed up, I will share an update. @HCI_Singapore

— Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) September 19, 2025

He further added that he is in regular contact with the Indian High Commissioner to Singapore, Dr. Shilpak Ambule, to ensure that the necessary formalities are completed swiftly. “I am in constant touch with the High Commissioner. We are coordinating to ensure beloved Zubeen’s mortal remains return to Assam at the earliest. As soon as the process is firmed up, I will share an update,” he assured.

Once the mortal remains arrive in India, they will be kept at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. This will allow fans and admirers an opportunity to pay their last respects. “We hope to bring back Zubeen to Guwahati at the earliest. There will be an opportunity for the public to pay their last tributes at Sarusajai,” Sarma added. “Thousands of his admirers are waiting on the streets to have his last glimpse – we are doing our best to bring him back home soon.”

A Life and Voice That Touched Millions

Zubeen Garg had travelled to Singapore to participate in the North East Festival, a cultural event showcasing the region’s talent and heritage. He was scheduled to perform at the festival a day after his sudden demise. According to a statement by the festival organisers, the singer encountered breathing difficulties during a scuba diving session. He was immediately given CPR and rushed to Singapore General Hospital, where he was declared dead around 2:30 PM IST, despite all medical efforts.

His sudden passing has sent shockwaves across the Northeast and beyond. Known for his unmatched energy on stage, emotional depth in his songs, and deep connection with the Assamese identity, Zubeen Garg was more than just a singer — he was a symbol of cultural pride.

In an official statement, Chief Minister Sarma mourned Zubeen’s passing, calling it a loss that words cannot fully express. “Today Assam lost one of its favourite sons. He has gone too early. This was not an age to go,” he said. “His unique voice stirred the masses and created music that touched the hearts and souls of people from all walks of life. His voice had an unmatched ability to energise people and his music directly spoke to the minds and souls.”

The Chief Minister and his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, also visited Zubeen’s residence in Guwahati to personally offer their condolences to the grieving family. They met with the late singer’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and other family members. Sharing a moment from their visit on X, Sarma posted, “Riniki and I visited the residence of our beloved Zubeen in Guwahati to stand in solidarity with his family in this hour of grief.”

As Assam awaits the arrival of Zubeen Garg’s mortal remains, tributes continue to pour in from fans, fellow artists, and public figures across the nation. Streets in Guwahati and other parts of Assam are already filled with admirers holding vigils, singing his songs, and preparing to bid farewell to the man who shaped an era of music in the region.

Zubeen’s death marks the end of a chapter in Assamese cultural history, but his legacy will live on through his music, his message, and the love he inspired in millions.
