Cardiologist explains how to recognise silent heart attack before it is too late

Silent heart attacks can be deadly if left untreated, as they might not receive prompt medical attention. If you’re concerned about silent heart attacks, Dr Bimal Chhajer, a cardiologist specialising in non-invasive cardiology, shared a blog about it on his website, Saaol.com, on June 5. It was titled, ‘Recognising pre-heart attack symptoms: what your body is telling you’. According to him, heart disease is a leading cause of death worldwide, and a heart attack can be fatal if not treated promptly. Fortunately, the body often gives early warnings before a heart attack occurs.

Know your body’s warning signs

In the blog, the cardiologist wrote, “Recognising those pre-heart attack symptoms can help save lives by enabling timely medical intervention. Common heart attack symptoms include chest pain, pain radiating to the arms, neck, jaw, or back, shortness of breath, cold sweats, nausea, and lightheadedness. Never disregard symptoms like dizziness, bodily aches, exhaustion, or chest pain. Additionally, silent heart attack signs may be mild and go unnoticed, increasing the risk of future complications. Understanding these warning signs and adopting healthy lifestyle changes can help prevent heart disease and protect your heart’s health.”

As per the cardiologist, ‘a pre-heart attack’, also known as unstable angina, is a serious warning sign that the heart isn’t getting enough oxygen-rich blood: it occurs when the coronary arteries become narrowed or partially blocked due to the buildup of plaque.

Symptoms include: chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, unusual fatigue, discomfort in the arms, neck, jaw, or back. These symptoms, as per the blog, can appear during rest or physical activity and may come and go. A pre-heart attack should never be ignored, as it can quickly lead to a full heart attack, he shared, adding that immediate medical care and lifestyle changes are crucial to prevent life-threatening damage.

Silent heart attack: the unnoticed danger

The cardiologist also said, “A silent heart attack occurs with little or no noticeable symptoms. Signs are mild or absent, which can lead to long-term heart damage. An impending heart attack shows warning signs like chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or extreme fatigue. Both are serious and require immediate attention. Early detection is crucial in preventing severe future cardiac events… being aware of pre-heart attack symptoms, impending, and silent heart attack signs is vital to prevent life-threatening events. Adopt a zero-oil diet, heamanage risk factors… listen to your body — early action today protects your heart tomorrow.”

Clinical psychologist explains victim mentality in relationships: How to recognise the signs and strategies to manage

Psychologist Dr Vandana V. Prakash explains how victim mentality affects relationships, key signs to watch for and strategies to build healthier partnerships.

Ever feel like your partner constantly plays the victim and blames you for everything that goes wrong? You’re not alone. Experts say this pattern of behaviour, known as victim mentality, is becoming increasingly common in relationships and can take a serious toll on emotional intimacy. Often rooted in past trauma or unresolved experiences, it is a clinically recognised behaviour that can strain even the strongest relationships.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Vandana V. Prakash – a clinical psychologist with 30 years of experience in psychotherapy and psycho-diagnostics, who is currently associated with Max Hospital, Vaishali – discusses the rising prevalence of victim mentality in relationships, particularly within marriages. She outlines the key signs to recognise this behaviour and shares strategies that can not only support a person struggling with victim mentality but also foster a healthier, more balanced relationship.

What is victim mentality?

Dr Prakash defines victim mentality as “marked by a general sense that one’s unhappiness or circumstances are completely due to the fault of others. Those who play victim deflect blame and responsibility on others.” She flags victim mentality as a serious issue in close relationships, with the potential possibility of breaking up marriages. The psychologist highlights, “Persons who have this mentality often overwhelm the partner by excessive blame, complain how nothing has worked for them, and due to others’ fault, they are powerless to change their circumstances.” This could sometimes stem from childhood experiences of trauma and is used as a coping mechanism by the person.

How to recognise victim mentality?

Dr Prakash lists the following as key signs of recognising victim mentality in your partner.

  • Great amount of worrying
  • Constant complaints
  • Rejection of advice given
  • Repeating the same problem without efforts to find a solution
  • Hearing but not listening
  • Emotionally uninvolved with life partner
  • Expectations of being looked after, but always dissatisfied that it was not enough
  • Feeling unloved and uncared for, despite the opposite being true.

How to manage victim mentality?

If you notice these signs in your partner, Dr. Prakash recommends taking proactive, healthy steps to address the issue.

  • Listen and empathise, but don’t always agree
  • Point out their thinking
  • Help them take responsibility
  • Help them love themselves
  • Help them in accepting others

However, the psychologist mentions that these strategies, despite being effective, take a fairly long time to manifest substantial changes. If all else fails, she recommends seeking help from a mental health professional.

Spotting ghostlighting: How to recognise this toxic dating trend and protect yourself

Ghostlighting is the subtle yet harmful dating trend where someone manipulates your feelings and perception while slowly disappearing from your life. Ravi Mittal, founder and CEO of QuackQuack, shares with HT Lifestyle the signs to watch for and shares ways to protect yourself from falling into this toxic pattern. What is ghostlighting?

It is the worst of two worlds. The trend suggests that when a person ghosts you and thinks that ghosting wasn’t painful enough, they decide to take it up a notch with pro-level gaslighting, where they pretend that YOU imagined their sudden disappearance; in fact, they never even ghosted you.

In simpler terms, they first pull off the magical act of disappearing into thin air, and then come back after weeks, non-apologetic, with tons of excuses that will make you doubt whether they ever ghosted you, or was it all in your “overthinking” mind. Luckily, this trend has been recognised, named, and shamed by Gen Zs and Millennials alike.

How to recognise?

The signs might be subtle, but Ghostlighters are not as sneaky as they believe themselves to be. The first sign is often finding yourself left on hold, and one fine day, messages start getting left unread. And the next clear sign is when, after the limbo of seen and unread, the same person suddenly messages with bangers like, “you don’t text me anymore”, “you never called me back”, “I told you I’d be busy these days.” The aim is to make you question your memory. 4 in 5 people on the receiving end of the treatment claimed these were the most important signs.

Reason behind this trend

Emotional immaturity, commitment issues, or avoidance techniques. Some people rush into getting too close and, in the end, do not feel the same spark as in the initial days. However, they lack the maturity to communicate it and choose to ghost.

How to dodge it

Trust your gut. If your instinct says something is off, it’s worth checking. Keep mental notes of conversations; it sounds petty, but it will help you remind yourself that this isn’t “overthinking or imagining”. Finally, a good match would never leave, especially without a goodbye or proper explanation.

Zeenat Aman says she once didn’t recognise Sabyasachi Mukherjee: I spluttered an apology | Bollywood

New Delhi, Legendary actor Zeenat Aman, who often shares anecdotes from her life on social media, recalled the time she failed to recognise a renowned designer, Sabyasachi Mukherjee.

Zeenat Aman says she once didn’t recognise Sabyasachi Mukherjee: I spluttered an apology

Sabyasachi is known to be among the top choices of the biggest Bollywood celebrities. Earlier this year, he also designed for Shah Rukh Khan for his debut at the Met Gala.

Zeenat shared pictures of herself on her Instagram handle on Friday as she posed wearing a red top from the celebrity designer. The 73-year-old actor penned a lengthy caption along, explaining the incident, which happened in 2022.

In her post, she recounted it was the birthday of her son, musician Zahaan Khan, when she ended up using the same elevator as the designer, who also expressed his admiration for the veteran actor.

“As we turned a corner towards the elevator, we could see its doors beginning to close. Just then, an elegant hand shot out, and the doors parted open smoothly for us. In the elevator carriage were two gentlemen, both immaculately coiffed and dressed. One was a bearded Indian man, and the other I suspect, was of caucasian descent. I smiled my thanks as we entered, and observed from their body language that they had recognised me,” the post began.

“Cara jabbed the button for the lobby, and the bearded man spoke. ‘Ma’am, I’m a big fan of yours, it’s an honour to meet you. I just want to say you have inspired me since I was a boy.’ I thanked him for his generous words and he explained to me that he was a designer.”

The “Don” recalled asking the name of the designer, on hearing which she apologised.

“As the elevator dinged to a halt, I asked him: ‘What is your name?’ Sabyasachi, he said with a demure smile, politely taking my hand as I spluttered an apology for not recognising him. The two men walked away, and Cara and I looked at each other before bursting into laughter at my gaffe.”

Zeenat will next star in “Bun Tikki”, alongside Shabana Azmi and Abhay Deol. The film is directed by Faraz Arif Ansari of “Sheer Qorma” fame. It is produced under Jio Studios and celebrated fashion designer Manish Malhotra’s banner, Stage 5 Production.
