Hole and Smashing Pumpkins legend Melissa Auf der Maur announces memoir ‘Even the Good Girls Will Cry’

by jummy84 November 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Former Hole and Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur has announced her memoir, Even The Good Girls Will Cry.

It will be Auf Der Maur’s first book and is described as a “part coming-of-age autobiography, part travel diary, part psychedelic scrapbook” and will also feature rare photos from throughout her career.

The memoir will be released via Da Capo on March 17, 2026 and you can pre-order/pre-save your copy here.

Auf Der Maur is seen as a pivotal figure in ’90s US alternative rock, and her career began as she was studying at university in Montreal when she formed the alternative rock band Tinker. She was recruited by Hole in 1994 and played on several records, including the 1998 classic ‘Celebrity Skin’. After leaving in 1999, she briefly joined The Smashing Pumpkins as touring member, and launched her solo career in 2004 with ‘Auf Der Maur’.

Auf Der Maur has said: “This book is about the decade that defined me and my generation, 1991-2001, and my life in the rock bands which allowed me to have a front row seat to an incredibly visceral and unforgettable moment in the counterculture.”

“It’s a love letter to the power of music and one-of-a-kind voices that make the world a cooler place; it’s also an ode to the analog, and what magic has been lost. Sharing what our generation witnessed, and what the world once was, in my hope of building a more livable future together.”

An official description of the book reads: “Even the Good Girls Will Cry begins with Auf der Maur’s bohemian upbringing in Montreal, where her early, deep connection to art and music gave her entry to the colorful and thriving local creative scene. Working as a cassette DJ and ticket girl, she would see (and sometimes meet) the luminaries who’d pass through town – Nirvana, Jane’s Addiction, Pavement, Sonic Youth.”

“Thanks to a thrown beer bottle and a long-shot fan letter to a PO Box, her band Tinker scored a life-changing opening slot for The Smashing Pumpkins and, sensing her natural talent on bass, Billy Corgan recommended her to Courtney Love, just one of the many uncanny threads that weaves destiny throughout this riveting memoir.”

“Whisked from her local scene and thrust into the eye of a hurricane of grief on a global stage, Melissa joined Hole for the band’s 1994 ‘Live Through This’ world tour just after the deaths of Kurt Cobain and Hole’s prior bassist, Kristen Pfaff, with Courtney Love at the center of it all. It was a tour of passionate intensity, as a chaotic yet stunningly powerful band constantly threatened to spin out of control. Melissa brings the reader with raging intimacy into the action, offering a heroic portrait of the unforgettable Courtney Love as she howled into the darkness as if to keep grief at bay.”

This summer, Auf Der Maur reunited with Corgan at a show in Montreal for ‘The Everlasting Gaze’, with the bassist also taking the moment to address her hometown crowd in French.

She also got back in the studio with Courtney Love last year for the first time in over two decades, and the two joined forces in an appearance on 070 Shake’s cover of Tim Buckley’s ‘Song To The Siren’.

Love and Auf der Maur also appeared on stage together in October 2018 in Hudson, New York, playing Hole songs ‘Doll Parts’, ‘Miss World’ and ‘Softer Softest’.

Auf Der Maur also dated Dave Grohl between 1999 and 2001, and in 2023 she reflected on the relationship, saying: “We had this beautiful compatible couple of years where, I mean, we were madly in love.”

bitchy | Prince Harry & Meghan took their kids to the pumpkin patch & carved pumpkins

Not to get too insidery, but doesn’t it feel like some new social media accounts have been activated very recently and there are instructions to swarm on anything involving the Duke and Duchess of Sussex? The online hissy fits and tantrums over the Sussexes are very weird and I wonder who’s paying for it. In any case, Meghan spread some lovely Halloween joy on Sunday, posting some special photos and videos including her kids, her husband, her mom and a man who looks like Markus Anderson (one of Meghan’s besties). The Sussexes went to the pumpkin patch, Meghan had a pumpkin wagon, a pink-clad Lili decided she needed a ride in the wagon, all while Archie (dressed in all black) ran around the rows of pumpkins. Meghan also included a time-lapse video of Harry carving the sh-t out of a pumpkin.

All of this led to some discussion about Americans and Halloween, and how the rest of the world really doesn’t “do” Halloween like Americans. As a nation, we’re obsessed with Halloween decorations and pumpkins and pumpkin carving. I wonder what else the Sussexes do for Halloween in Montecito – their neighborhood doesn’t seem conducive to trick-or-treating, but I bet there are events for kids this week in the community. Like, trunk-or-treats or some kind of Halloween festival at the kids’ school, something like that.

The countdown to Halloween week has begun and artists and entrepreneurs in the city are organising exciting workshops and parties, there’s something for every age group.

A fun Halloween bash

From eerie escape rooms and pumpkin mosaic art, to Halloween themed vinyl listening and art with puppies, there’s something for every ghost, ghoul, and goblin to enjoy. These Halloween activities promise unforgettable memories and spine-tingling excitement.

‘We will take attendees through two very dark metal albums’

For fans of heavy metal music, you are in for a treat this Halloween. Aaryaman Sharma from Ink n Brew cafe, is hosting a Halloween themed vinyl listening session. They will take attendees through two very dark metal albums- ‘Black Metal’ by Venom, and ‘Paranoid’ by Black Sabbath. This will be followed by open-mic and jamming sessions limited to themes of Halloween and prizes to be won for best dressed, best entertainer and best guitar shredder. Aaryaman says, “The event is for anyone above the age of 16-years-old. We will also be serving Halloween themed special drinks on the occasion that include Pumpkin Spiced Latte and Ghost Cold Brew among others.”

‘DIY activities include Pumpkin mosaic art, Halloween soap making’

If you are looking to explore your creative side this Halloween and create your own decor join in an art session that has everything from DIY Pumpkin mosaic art, Halloween soap making, googly eyes headband Making, DIY haunted magnets and Halloween bunting painting. Mrudula K from Skillo Skillo Parties says, “If you’re hosting a Halloween party then we come and organize our fun activities- from Halloween soap to magnet making, for a minimum of 8 children. Children learn to make their own art that they can take back home and the Halloween theme adds to the excitement.”

‘Join in the nightmare hour’

If you are a fan of gaming and looking at shaking a leg while at it, here’s where you should be! GenZone’s Halloween Party is a mix of music, gaming, and pure Halloween chaos. The night brings together top GenZ DJs, interactive spaces, and a few wild surprises, including our signature ‘Nightmare Hour’, where the vibe completely flips for those who can handle it. Shorya Gupta, founder, says, “Come in your best Halloween outfit and with full energy. The event is for those above 18- years-old, expect the perfect playground where music, lights, and games come together. It’s an experience that connects energy, culture, and community.”

‘Halloween for a good cause’

Animal lovers, here’s how you can celebrate a fun Halloween while also supporting a good cause. Pawga, is organising Halloween themed pet yoga and pet art across various cities in India. Founders Subhashree Madhavan and Sinduja Krishnakumar say, “In some cities we have puppies dressed in Halloween themed costumes as they join in puppy yoga and puppy art sessions. The idea is to promote adopt, don’t shop. All the puppies who join these sessions are free for adoption. At the same time we dont force those attending these sessions to adopt, even if one adoption happens, we are happy but the pet should reach a safe home.”

‘Spooky art workshops and dreamy Halloween decor’

This isn’t your usual Halloween party, no blaring music or overcrowded clubs here. Hosted by Dewoy and The Mastani House, this event is for people who want to celebrate Halloween in a more chill, creative way. Arisha Jana, founder says, “Expect exclusive small brands to shop from, a hand-poke tattoo artist for those spontaneous tattoo moments- a hand-poke tattoo artist on-site for anyone looking to get an impromptu tattoo and make the evening even more memorable. There’s also good food, dreamy Halloween décor, and a spooky art workshop to enjoy with your friends or family. Come dressed up in your Halloween best and click great pictures at plenty of cute photo corners.”

If you are planning to host your own Halloween home party-

-Use string lights, candles, lanterns, or coloured bulbs

– Decide on your Halloween playlist or ambient creepy sounds.

– Decor should include cobwebs, fake spiders, skeletons, carved pumpkins and a fog machine can be rented out

– Themed areas include a graveyard for photos, a witch’s bar, or mad scientist’s lab for drinks. Food can include – Mummy” hot dogs (wrapped in crescent dough), Popcorn, chips and dips, Pumpkin-shaped cheese balls or cookies.

Deep Cut Friday: ‘Cash Car Star’ by the Smashing Pumpkins

by jummy84 October 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Each week, SPIN digs into the catalogs of great artists and highlights songs you might not know for our Deep Cut Friday series.

The last few years of the Smashing Pumpkins’ ’90s run were a little chaotic. Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was fired and then rehired, and bassist D’arcy Wretzky permanently left the band. Frontman Billy Corgan envisioned another epic double album as a grand farewell record. But Virgin Records, stung by low sales for 1998’s Adore, only agreed to release a single-disc version of Machina/The Machines of God in February 2000.

As the year wound down, Corgan decided to go out with a bang, assembling the extra music Virgin declined to release as Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music. Corgan had 25 vinyl copies pressed up and given away to friends and fans with instructions to share the music on the internet, and the album existed for decades only as a beloved bootleg. Machina II opens with a couple of uptempo rockers including “Cash Car Star,” featuring lyrics that seemed pointedly disillusioned with show business.

The band reunited in 2006 and have released many new albums since then, but for many years a proper release of Machina II remained elusive. And then this month Smashing Pumpkins released Machina – Aranea Alba Edition, a massive 80-song box set featuring an expanded version of both albums. The Machina II songs “Speed Kills,” “Let Me Give the World To You,” and “Real Love” have appeared on reissues and compilations over the years. But the new box set offers the first retail release of most of the songs on the album, albeit in a very expensive limited edition package ($395), including “Cash Car Star,” which the band performed on television multiple times.

“Cash Car Star” made its live debut in October 1998, when Smashing Pumpkins opened for Kiss at Dodger Stadium for a Halloween special broadcast on the Fox network.

Two years later, in between the black market release of Machina II and the band’s farewell shows in Chicago, the band made one last television appearance, playing “Cash Car Star” on The Tonight Show. Host Jay Leno walked over to banter with Corgan afterwards, asking why the band was breaking up. “Comedy doesn’t pay, Jay,” Corgan deadpanned. “You’ll be back, you guys will be back,” said Leno, who’d later have his own struggles with gracefully leaving the spotlight.

Three more essential Smashing Pumpkins deep album cuts:

“Hummer”

Siamese Dream is more purely a guitar album than the Smashing Pumpkins records that would follow it. But the “Hummer” intro is one of the album’s more unusual moments, a distorted loop of Corgan playing sitar that producer Butch Vig chopped up on the same Akai S 1000 sampler that he’d go on to use for many of Garbage’s early songs.

“Starla”

1994’s Pisces Iscariot is one of the most impressive rarities compilations in the alternative rock canon, full of great songs that somehow didn’t make the cut for the band’s early albums. The 11-minute “Starla,” originally released on the B-side of the “I Am One” single, climaxes with arguably Corgan’s most transcendent guitar solo.

“Here is No Why”

The tuneful Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness highlight “Here is No Why” is sandwiched between the band’s heaviest hits, “Zero” and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings.”

The Smashing Pumpkins Announce 30th Anniversary Edition of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

by jummy84 October 2, 2025
written by jummy84

The Smashing Pumpkins have announced a 30th anniversary edition of their seminal double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

The new expanded edition will be available November 21st as a 6-LP super deluxe edition and on January 9th as a 4-CD box set. Each contains the original tracklist along with 80 minutes of previously unreleased and recently unearthed recordings from the 1996 tour in support of the album.

“Unearthing these live recordings from the original lineup’s true, last large-scale tour was a labour of love, and for me certainly a bittersweet as once we blew apart in 1996, we were never quite the same: be it emotionally, or spiritually,” commented frontman Billy Corgan in a press release. “Thankfully, I can say this as the band is now enjoying our greatest public success since that time, and one can hear in these tapes the raw power that such nascent faith afforded us, then, and the will and wisdom to persevere that followed.”

The 6-LP deluxe vinyl box set also includes a hardbound book featuring new liner notes by Corgan, a custom tarot card deck, and seven lithographs in a velvet slipcase.

In addition to the expanded reissue, Corgan will also be celebrating the album’s anniversary with a seven-concert collaboration with the Lyric Opera of Chicago in November. Dubbed “A Night of Melon Collie and Infinite Sadness,” these shows will see Corgan performing newly commissioned arrangements and orchestrations he made alongside conductor James Lowe. Corgan will be joined by soprano Sydney Mancasola, mezzo-soprano Zoie Reams, tenor Dominick Chenes, and baritone Edward Parks. Dates include November 21st, 22nd, 25th, 26th, 28th, 29th, and 30th. Get tickets here.

Moreover, the Pumpkins are collaborating with Chicago-based chocolatier Vosges Haut-Chocolat on a limited-edition chocolate box set containing a limited-edition poster and six chocolate bars inspired by Mellon Collie songs.
