Frost Children Go for Synthpop and Almost Pull It Off » PopMatters

written by jummy84

Frost Children’s SISTER represents something of a big swing for the sibling duo. Their first three releases all leaned into glitchy hyperpop. In these songs, catchy hooks sometimes landed right on top of irregular, very electronic beats. Or walls of distorted guitar would infect a previously quiet track. It was confrontational and striking music, but perhaps not the kind that would get a roomful of people dancing. Hearth Room (2023) marked a significant departure, relying primarily on non-electronic instruments and adopting at least somewhat more conventional songwriting. SISTER retains that interest in songwriting but brings back the electronics.

The three singles released so far provide a solid preview of what Frost Children are doing this time out. “CONTROL” opens with a strong vocal melody and a catchy, yet minimal, backing track featuring simple drums and a burbling bass. The chorus is as glitchy and weird as the duo’s earlier material, but the song also features a soaring bridge that’s legitimately pretty. “Falling” is even catchier, with a pulsing synth melody as well as a big, hooky vocal. The beat stays in a solid four-on-the-floor groove throughout, making for a true synthpop dance track.

“WHAT IS FOREVER FOR” features a similar combination of a synth hook and a strong vocal melody. The tempo is a bit slower, though, appropriate for the more contemplative lyrics and mood of the track. Once again, the bridge features the track’s biggest vocal hook, which is an interesting choice. Clearly, though, Frost Children have decided to go all in on melody and steadier beats.

SISTER still features plenty of interesting, sometimes even curious, musical choices. The opening track, “Position Famous”, begins with a simple two-note guitar pattern and shouted lyrics. It’s a classic format, where the track builds up to a big, explosive moment later on.

“Position Famous” holds off on this moment for so long that listeners may start to wonder if it’s ever going to happen. Eventually, though, the snare drum roll begins, followed by a pulsing dance beat that emerges under a new melody. Oddly, though, the vocals drop out entirely at this point, leaving the synth piano melody to drive the rest of the song. It’s as if Frost Children are giving listeners what they expect and then almost snatching away the catharsis.

“Sister” begins with acoustic guitar strumming and a story of the siblings’ childhood. In the second verse, sparse synth drums join in, but the acoustic vibe remains. Rather than a bridge, “Sister” features a glitchy electronic collage over its final minute, but Frost Children at least deign to give listeners one more chorus on top of all the noise.

Closer “2 L0VE” appears to be designed as a test of listeners’ patience. It’s built around a vocal sample of the title, as the words “Two Love” are repeated and electronically pitch-shifted into all sorts of different registers, on top of each other and throughout the nearly six-minute-long track. The beats and melody around the title sample are pretty decent, and for a while, the song is blessedly sample-free. It returns before the end of the track; however, it is possibly more annoying than before.

A couple of guest spots break up the record nicely. “Ralph Lauren” features a rap from Babymorocco and is styled as a minimalist Soundcloud rap track. Frost Children are not particularly good rappers, although I did enjoy the bit where they say “clap” instead of using an actual clapping sound. When Babymorocco finally shows up at the end, the flow improves noticeably.

“RADIO” features a strong vocal performance from Kim Petras. Frost Children go full dance-pop with the track, and even the sleepy rap verses don’t detract from the Petras moments. It’s a terrifically catchy song that shows what Frost Children can do when they want to go that route. “Don’t Make Me Cry” is similarly hooky, operating as a sort of synthpop power ballad. Big vocals and simple synth hooks are the order of the day, and it works well.

If there’s an issue with SISTER, it’s that Frost Children haven’t quite figured out the balance between engaging songwriting and just reaching for the big hooks. Too often, those hooks are catchy in the moment but lack the lasting power of genuine pop music earworms. The more intriguing musical moments tend to occur in the less catchy songs. That leaves the interesting ideas searching for a big hook, while the big hooks remain stuck in more generic synthpop arrangements. In certain places, like “RADIO” and “Sister”, the duo find the right combination to make the songs truly memorable. SISTER ultimately feels more like a transitional album than a complete success in a new style.

Post Malone, Lainey Wilson Pull Up For Stagecoach Fest

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

Post Malone, Lainey Wilson and Cody Johnson will headline the annual Stagecoach festival on April 24-26 at Empire Polo Club in Indio, Ca., as part of a wildly diverse lineup that moves ever farther from the event’s country roots.

Although genre mainstays such as Bailey Zimmerman, Brooks & Dunn, Riley Green, Lyle Lovett, Wynonna Judd, Little Big Town and Red Clay Strays will be in attendance, Stagecoach will also play host to borderline head-scratchers such as Journey, Pitbull, rappers BigXthaPlug and Ludacris, Third Eye Blind, the Wallflowers and Counting Crows.

In addition, Diplo will return for the sixth year of his Diplo’s HonkTonk, and chef Guy Fieri will reprise his Stagecoach Smokehouse with BBQ tastings and cooking demos. Tickets go on sale Oct. 2 for the fest, which sold out in advance in 2025 and takes place at the same venue that hosts the Coachella festival the prior two April weekends. Amazon Music is back as the livestream partner.

“My first Stagecoach was in 2022 on the SiriusXM Stage at 2:30PM in the afternoon,” recalls Wilson. “Look how far we’ve come, y’all! I’m honored to headline this year. This is a career highlight and I can’t wait to see everyone there.” Adds Johnson, “I’ll never forget the first time I got the call to play Stagecoach. We were on one of the smaller stages and I remember wondering if anyone would even know our songs. Now, here we are invited back to headline the Mane Stage. What a ride. I hope y’all bring the energy, because it’s gonna get western.”

Meanwhile, the winner of the CBS competition show The Road, which premieres Oct. 19, will perform on the Mane Stage and take home a $250,000 prize.

The Best Denim Jackets Can Pull Any Fall Look Together

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

The best denim jackets aren’t just fallbacks—they can become your closet’s backbone. Regardless of season, these reliable mainstays can be worn year-round and should always be included in your capsule wardrobe. However, something about the current crisp temperatures makes us even more excited to break out our jean jackets. Whether you’re looking for a reliable topper to a favorite pair of blue jeans or you’re ready for a little texture atop a floral dress and knee-high boots, these timeless layers make styling fall outfits simple.

Start your journey by shopping for a classic denim jacket in a blue wash, such as the Levi’s trucker, a silhouette the brand has offered since the ’60s. From there, you can experiment with contemporary silhouettes—whether that means a workwear-inspired barn coat or a trend-forward indigo pick made from raw denim (like at Tory Burch and Ulla Johnson). In our edit below, you’ll find the 30 best denim jackets to get you started this autumn.

The OG that started it all. Think of classic denim jackets as your first essential buy in the category. From the iconic trucker jacket at Levi’s to Gap’s heritage take, these Americana staples have a timeless feel and relaxed fit that’s made for layering. Go the Canadian tuxedo route with blue jeans, a coordinating jean jacket, and a T-shirt—or try one over a favorite hoodie with sweatpants or trousers for easy, everyday outfitting.

2. The denim barn jacket

Barn jackets and chore coats are having a major fashion moment this season, and these workwear-inspired picks feel fresh in denim fabrications. Corduroy collars and flannel linings provide some welcome contrast, while chest and slip pockets offer that work-jacket feel. A few of our favorites this year include a cropped style from J.Crew and a glammed-up take from Anine Bing.

Whether classic blue, daring black, or vintage light wash is calling your name, these finds all offer plenty of versatility, especially in the fall.

Wu Lyf pull latest single ‘A New Life Is Coming’ from Spotify over CEO’s “investment in AI weaponry”

Wu Lyf have removed their latest single ‘A New Life Is Coming’ from Spotify – find out more below.

In April, Wu Lyf released ‘A New Life Is Coming’, marking their first release in 13 years. Now, just five months later, the band have pulled the song from Spotify – and other streaming platforms. While the band haven’t addressed its removal from Apple Music and other platforms, they did confirm on social media that its removal from Spotify was largely due to Spotify CEO Daniel Ek’s investment in AI military drone tech.

Wu Lyf wrote on Instagram over the weekend: “A few months ago we pulled ‘Go Tell Fire to the Mountain’ from streaming services, clearing ground for a new life to take root. There were several conversations that led to this decision, circling around a disdain for what the Spotify algorithm & economics has done to music culture. Since then we’ve all learned about the Spotify CEO’s investment in A.I. weaponry and seen several bands we respect make statements about removing their music.”

“Now, following some lengthy debate we’ve decided to take ‘A New Life Is Coming’ down as well. Nothing ever changes unless we have the courage to try (& perhaps fail) to do things differently. Today on worldunite.org we’re sharing an early demo of ‘Letting Go’ for LYF members. This take was recorded shortly after the initial idea emerged out of some soul making blues, and though the song has evolved somewhat since then we think it captures something special…”

With the move, Wy Lyf join King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Xiu Xiu – who also recently  announced that they are in the process of removing their music from the platform over Ek’s “investment in AI war drones” – and Deerhoof, who pulled their catalogue from the streamer for the same reason, stating: “We don’t want our music killing people. We don’t want our success being tied to AI battle tech,” Deerhoof said in a statement.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard frontman Stu Mackenzie said: “We’ve been saying fuck Spotify for years. In our circle of musician friends, that’s what people say all the time, for all of these other reasons which are well documented.” He went on to explain that while he doesn’t “really consider myself an activist, and I don’t feel comfortable soapboxing,” the band “don’t really want our music to be here, at least right now”.

In recent years, people have been divided about streaming platforms and their impact on the music industry. In 2024, for example, Ek sparked backlash for his comments relating to the cost of “creating content”, with countless users and musicians describing him as “out of touch”.

Ek later walked back on his comments, explaining in an apology that he had no intention of dismissing the struggles faced by musicians and using the “reductive” label of “content”. The negative response to this was heightened as, around the same time, it was confirmed that Spotify had made profits of over €1billion (£860m), following staff being laid off and subscription prices rising.

The streaming platform also received criticism after it officially demonetised all songs on the platform with less than 1,000 streams – making it harder for artists to generate royalties from their music and restricting new artists looking to crack the music industry.

Hotline TNT Pull Music From Spotify

by jummy84 August 24, 2025
written by jummy84

Hotline TNT have pulled their music from Spotify, joining an exodus of indie acts including Godspeed You! Black Emperor, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Xiu Xiu, and Deerhoof. “The company that bills itself as the steward of all recorded music has proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that it does not align with the band’s values in any way,” frontman Will Anderson wrote in a statement. “A cooler world is possible.”

In announcing their departures from Spotify, King Gizzard, Xiu Xiu, and Deerhoof all cited the military investments made by Spotify CEO Daniel Ek through his venture capital fund Prima Materia. Since 2021, Prima Materia has been investing in Helsing, a defense company that sells software that uses AI to inform military decisions. Godspeed You! Black Emperor went one step further and removed their music from all major streaming platforms.

This year, Hotline TNT shared their latest album Raspberry Moon. They’re currently on tour in support of the record. On September 5, Hotline TNT will host a “24-hour telethon” on Twitch, YouTube, and Instagram, during which, according to a press release, they’ll “aim to sell 500 copies of Raspberry Moon via Bandcamp while also talking to artists, journalists, record store owners and others about their favorite new music, sources for discovery, and their feelings on Spotify.”
