Oscars Commentary (Updated: Oct. 23, 2025): As the early days of the Oscar race continues to heat up, the fall festival circuit continues to spotlight quiet contenders and crowd-pleasers alike. At the Middleburg Film Festival, the Audience Award ended in a second consecutive year of a tie between two awards hopefuls: Focus Features’ “Hamnet,” Chloé Zhao’s intimate adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, and Searchlight’s “Rental Family,” Hikari’s offbeat and emotionally resonant dramedy.

Meanwhile, AFI Fest opened with 20th Century Studios’ “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” Scott Cooper’s biopic chronicling the making of Nebraska, which opens nationwide this weekend.

And down south, the SCAD Savannah Film Festival kicks off Saturday with A24’s “Eternity,” a high-concept romance that premiered at Toronto and has its fair share of fans.

Updated predictions are below.

Top 3 projected Oscar nomination leaders (films): “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners” (13); “Hamnet” (11); “Wicked: For Good” (10)

Top 3 projected Oscar nomination leaders (studios): Warner Bros. (28); Netflix (16); Focus Features and Neon (15)

Zodiac Sign Predictions for Halloween Season

by jummy84 October 19, 2025
written by jummy84

What This Mercury in Retrograde Means for the Zodiac Signs, According to Astrologer Aliza Kelly

Never mind ghosts and goblins: a true jump scare for some? Setting boundaries.

However, as astrologer Aliza Kelly exclusively told E! News, some of the zodiac signs should gear up to do just that—and more—during this spooky season. Take for instance, Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21). This, in fact, is your time to shine and celebrate your birthday, after all. So expect all eyes on you as “you’re truly in your element.”

“This is your time to be radiant, magnetic,” Aliza added, “and just a little dangerous.”

Speaking of possible danger: Virgo, now is the time to be a little more careful than usual.

“Whether you’re manifesting, setting boundaries, or confessing something raw,” Aliza shared, “your language carries weight.”

As for those who will feel a bit haunted this time of year? Here’s looking at you, Leo. “The past few weeks have been great for networking,” Aliza noted, “but now you’re being dragged deep into the basement…Be sure to bring a flashlight.”

Red Carpet Predictions: Glamour We Expect at 70th Hyundai Filmfare Awards 2025 With Gujarat Tourism

by jummy84 October 5, 2025
written by jummy84

The countdown to the 70th Hyundai Filmfare Awards 2025 With Gujarat Tourism begins. It is scheduled to take place at the EKA Arena in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on October 11, 2025. Now, the excitement isn’t just about who will take home the coveted trophies but also what fashion statements will dominate the red carpet. Like every year, one can expect a tapestry of fashionable looks. But this is Filmfare we are talking about! So, we can anticipate a blend of tradition and trendsetting glamour. Of course, this year promises to be no different, with designers and celebrities gearing up to set new fashion benchmarks.

Fashion expectations

In 2025, we have seen a revival of Y2K fashion. Futuristic, metallic and bright aesthetics with bold, hyper-feminine elements have come to greet us once again. But can we expect the same at the Filmfare red carpet this year? Definitely. We have seen some stunning looks at the recent Filmfare Glamour & Style Awards 2025 as well. If we are to take them as examples, one can expect a blend of elegance with drama. Ananya Panday’s glittering body-hugging gown with intricate side cut-out detailing had taken the red carpet by storm. Tamannaah Bhatia had worn an interesting wine-coloured A-line dress. We can expect all of this and more from the stars!

With the youth fixating on woke culture, we are also expecting to witness an increased emphasis on sustainable fashion as more celebrities embrace eco-friendly fabric and ethical craftsmanship. Traditional silhouettes will be reimagined with contemporary cuts, bold colour palettes and innovative draping techniques. Interestingly, one cannot forget the rich sarees and traditional ensembles that can be expected at the Filmfare Awards. From the yesteryear actresses like Sharmila Tagore, Jaya Bachchan, Rekha and more to the newer generation, including Kareena Kapoor Khan and Alia Bhatt, rich brocades and intricate hand-embroidery to sleek, tailored sarees have always stolen the spotlight. Think of Kareena Kapoor Khan’s regal red saree for Filmfare Awards 2024, or her sparkling silver saree for Filmfare OTT Awards 2024. Alia Bhatt’s contemporary saree from Anamika Khanna, which she donned at Filmfare Awards 2024 was nothing short of beautiful.

Filmfare

Celebrity-designer pairings

A major highlight will be the much-anticipated collaborations between leading Bollywood stars and their favourite designers. Much like Shah Rukh Khan and Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s surprise MET Gala 2025 collaboration, one can expect Bollywood’s finest to turn up in ensembles from their favourite designers at the Filmfare Awards 2025 too.

Iconic looks to watch

The performers, including Ananya Panday, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Kriti Sanon are set to dazzle in stylish avatars. The hosts, including Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Maniesh Paul are also expected to be dapper and fashionable. This year, the spotlight could also be on statement accessories like oversized earrings, embellished clutches and bold footwear. One can expect red carpet staples like sequins and velvet to make a comeback but with unexpected twists. Overall, the 70th Hyundai Filmfare Awards 2025 With Gujarat Tourism will be a celebration of creativity and style. Watch out for the glamour and more!

2026 Oscars Best Actress Predictions

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

Variety Awards Circuit section is the home for all awards news and related content throughout the year, featuring the following: the official predictions for the upcoming Oscars, Emmys, Grammys and Tony Awards ceremonies, curated by Variety senior awards editor Clayton Davis. The prediction pages reflect the current standings in the race and do not reflect personal preferences for any individual contender. As other formal (and informal) polls suggest, competitions are fluid and subject to change based on buzz and events. Predictions are updated every Thursday.

Oscars Best Actress Commentary (Updated Sept. 12, 2025): We’re just getting started. The best actress race seems to be top-heavy in terms of contenders, but campaign selections will ultimately determine the best chances of recognition for a few of these ladies..

Leading the pack is Jessie Buckley’s powerhouse turn in Chloé Zhao’s adaptation of “Hamnet,” which stunned audiences at Telluride and Toronto, and seems to be the early favorite coming after her first nom for “The Lost Daughter” (2022). The Focus Features drama delivers heart-wrenching performances from Buckley, as well as co-star Paul Mescal. Zhao’s adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel is emerging as a major Oscar contender across multiple categories, and Buckley could be the key that keeps the campaign intact.

Close behind is Renate Reinsve in Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” which premiered as a major awards contender at Cannes before making stops at the fall festivals. The Norwegian drama serves as Trier’s follow-up to “The Worst Person in the World,” which won Reinsve best actress at Cannes and earned two Oscar nominations. Norway has already selected “Sentimental Value” as its official submission for international feature, and Neon is giving this a huge awards push, which offers Reinsve the needed momentum.

Cynthia Erivo remains an intriguing wildcard for Jon M. Chu’s musical sequel, “Wicked: For Good,” with her Elphaba still unseen but carrying considerable anticipation given her previous Oscar nomination and the musical’s built-in fan base.

And then two performances could face category placement questions that would impact their places in the race. Two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone’s revered work in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia” solidified Focus Features’ dominance at Telluride. At the same time, Kate Hudson’s role in Craig Brewer’s “Song Sung Blue” will close AFI, potentially offering late-season momentum depending on whether campaigns target lead or supporting categories. Hudson is rumored to be a possible spoiler (especially after seeing the trailer), which could bring the former Oscar nominee her second nod after “Almost Famous” (2001).

We also have Sydney Sweeney on our radar, who could make a run for her biopic “Christy,” despite the mixed reviews. The same goes for Academy Award winner Julia Roberts, who’s the best part of her Luca Guadagnino drama “After the Hunt.” And never count out other A-listers like Jennifer Lawrence from Lynne Ramsay’s “Die, My Love” or Laura Dern, who may get a boost from Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly,” and get a lift for her upcoming work in Bradley Cooper’s “Is This Thing On?” which is said to be a leading role.

Keep watching this space for more updates as it all unfolds.

Final Emmy Predictions, As Chosen By Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast

by jummy84 September 12, 2025
written by jummy84

We did it! Well, almost. It’s just a few days until we finally learn who won the “Severance”/ “The Pitt” smackdown… and this weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys only added to the intrigue: Shawn Hatosy won guest actor for “The Pitt” and Merritt Weaver was named guest actress for “Severance,” splitting those two up nicely. “Severance” has a lead on “The Pitt” when it comes to win tally so far (6 vs. 2) — but then, “The Pitt” won for the all-important casting category, perhaps showing where the acting votes are headed.

On this episode of the Variety Awards Circuit podcast we talk to Emmys host Nate Bargatze about how this sunday’s awards show is shaping up. But first, on the Roundtable, we give our final predictions in all the major emmy categories. Listen below!

This year’s Emmys, produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment, will include reunions timed to the 25th anniversary of ‘Gilmore Girls,’ with stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, as well as a 40th anniversary ‘Golden Girls’ tribute, as Reba McEntire leads a sing along of the show’s ‘Thank You for Being a Friend’ theme song.

Also, Mariska Hargitay will lead a tribute to the ‘Law & Order’ franchise, and Jeff Probst will celebrate the 50th season of ‘Survivor.’ Plus, Eric Dane and Jesse Williams will help mark the 20th anniversary of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’

As for Bargatze, he’s excited to talk about his plan to keep acceptance speeches short by donating money to the Boys & Girls Club every time winners don’t go long. And he discussed the fact that he’s heading to Denver this weekend to perform standup before heading back here to host the Emmys.

“I think in my stand up, you’re along for a ride a lot more, and we don’t really veer out of it,” he says. “A night like this is going to be a little more present, a little more in the moment of what’s happening as stuff happens throughout the night. I’ve got to be prepared for anything that can happen. If you think of something funny at the moment, you’ve got to kind of trust it and just throw it out there and see if it works. It’s a lot more in the moment than my stand up is, which is very prepared and exactly I know where I’m going.”

Meanwhile, here is Variety chief awards editor Clayton Davis’ final thoughts on the major Emmy categories:

NFL predictions: Ndamukong Suh picks Super Bowl contenders, dark horses, MVP and players to watch

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Both the Eagles and Chiefs are among the teams expected to get back to the big game but who are the other sides to watch? Who will end the season as MVP? Which defensive and offensive players will stand out? And who are the dark horses?

To answer all those questions, RadioTimes.com sat down with NFL legend and Sky Sports pundit Ndamukong Suh to get his predictions for the season ahead.

Ndamukong Suh’s NFL 2025 predictions

Super Bowl contenders

“I think there are going to be a lot of teams that have an opportunity to win. I think the strongest conference will be the NFC but there are a couple of teams I think have an opportunity to get to the Super Bowl.

“I have to mention the Kansas City Chiefs. I would also say the Detroit Lions. I think the Washington Commanders as well. And of course, the Philadelphia Eagles seem like they’re rebuilding every single year to make that hard push to get into the Super Bowl.

“Those are my kind of top four teams as of right now that I think have a legit chance to get there as of right now.”

Dark horses

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, in white, blue and orange NFL uniform, hands off the American football to running back D'Andre Swift, with Bears and Kansas City Chiefs players in the background.

“I’ve just got a good feeling about my dark horses being the Chicago Bears. I think Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams are going to find a way to create havoc in that black and blue division of the NFC North.

“Ultimately, I mean, it’s fair game for anybody and everybody. Everybody is at 00:00 today. We’ll see after week one how things shape up but even then. I mean, it’s so early in the season. The season, honestly, hasn’t even started yet.”

MVP

“My MVP for this year is Lamar Jackson. And the reason I’m picking him is I believe he and the Baltimore Ravens understand this is kind of a ‘put up or shut up’ year.

“He’s going to have to have an MVP season to be able to dethrone the two nemeses of his career – Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs – to win that Conference (the AFC) and go from there.”

Defensive player to watch

“The player I’m most excited to watch outside of my defensive tackles? That would have to be Micah Parsons.

“I think as long as he stays healthy, you’re going to see a Green Bay Packers defence that is built around him to have success. I feel like they made that trade as their next version of Reggie White to come in and take them to a Super Bowl and have an opportunity to go and win it.”

Offensive player to watch

Saquon Barkley, in green and white NFL uniform, celebrates with his Philadelphia Eagles teammates in the end zone.

“The non-quarterback to stand out this year? It’s a tough one. I mean, I think my easy answer would be Saquon Barkley. I think he back doors his successful season.

“He may not have a record-breaking year, but he’s still going to be a massive force to be dealt with. He’s obviously the linchpin and cornerstone of the Philadelphia Eagles team and offence.”

Wednesday Season 2 Predictions

by jummy84 August 29, 2025
written by jummy84

Wednesday returned with the first part of season 2 this month, and the show brought with it new and familiar faces along with a new mystery for our endearingly weird protagonist.

The first four episodes found Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) having psychic visions of her roommate, Enid (Emma Myers), dying and blaming Wednesday for her death. Meanwhile, a flock of crows is murdering local townsfolk, including the death of Donovan Galpin (Jamie McShane), the former sheriff of Jericho and the father of Tyler (Hunter Doohan), the Hyde who went on a killing spree last season and as a result is now a patient at Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital. Elsewhere, Pugsley Addams (Isaac Ordonez), now a student at Nevermore Academy, sets loose a zombie he calls Slurp (Owen Painter), who also used to be a student there.

In episode 4, we learn that Willow Hill employee Judi Spannagel (Heather Matarazzo) is not only the person behind the bird attacks but also running a program called LOIS (Long-term Outcast Integration Study) that’s doing experiments on Outcasts. Meanwhile, Laurel Gates/Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci) returns to set Tyler free, only to be killed by him moments later. The fourth episode also ends with what appears to be Wednesday’s death after Tyler (as Hyde) pushes her out a window.

Among the many other new characters introduced this season: Nevermore student Agnes DeMille (Evie Templeton), Wednesday’s fangirl/stalker; Morticia Addams’ (Catherine-Zeta Jones) mother, Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley); new Nevermore principal Barry Dort (Steve Buscemi); Dr. Rachael Fairburn (Thandiwe Newton), who runs Willow Hill and meets an untimely end; Ron Kruger (Anthony Michael Hall), a Phoenix Cadet Master who goes head-to-head with Wednesday, also before meeting his own untimely end; Miss Capri (Billie Piper), Nevermore’s new music teacher; and Professor Orloff (Christopher Lloyd), a Nevermore teacher. Returning to the show are Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester, Lurch (with Joonas Suotamo taking over the role from George Burcea) and Pugsley Addams (Isaac Ordonez, now a series regular).

Ahead of the Part 2 premiere, The Hollywood Reporter takes a look at some of the burning questions and fan theories surrounding the new season.

  • Is Wednesday really dead?

Jenna Ortega in 'Wednesday' season two.

After she lands on the pavement and we see her covered in blood, Wednesday says in voice-over: “I’ve always dreamed of looking death in the face. But in my final moments, all I hear is my mother’s words ringing in my ears. Maybe I have made things worse. Much worse.” But don’t expect a The Last of Us-style shocker. With the show renewed for a third season, it’s highly unlikely she’s dead; the series is, after all, titled Wednesday. Not to mention, a teaser for the second part of the season shows Wednesday appearing to wake up from a coma.

  • What role does Lady Gaga play?

    Lady-Gaga-Wednesday-Song-Music-VideoLady-Gaga-Wednesday-Song-Music-Video
Image Credit: Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images for The Recording Academy

In May, Netflix posted on X: “Lady Gaga will guest star in Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 as Rosaline Rotwood — a legendary Nevermore teacher who crosses paths with Wednesday.” However, Ortega later told Entertainment Tonight: “She’s not a teacher. That’s your little clue. She’s not. Whatever you heard, it’s wrong.” One theory posits that she might show up as Wednesday’s new spirit guide, replacing Goody Addams (also played by Ortega in the first season). Another suggests she might be a villain, given that we already found out who the stalker is and who is controlling the crows. Yet another theory suggests that she might show up to reveal Nevermore secrets crucial to what’s really going on at the school and/or psychiatric hospital.

  • Who is the mystery woman that Wednesday saved in the LOIS chamber?

Wednesday helps an unnamed Willow Hill inmate (Frances O’Connor) escape from Lois in episode 4. Some fans are speculating that it’s Ophelia Frump, Morticia’s sister, who is playing a big role in this season’s storyline so far. Others speculate that Gaga will be playing Ophelia. However, seeing as Gaga appears only in one episode and only in the second half of the season, and Ophelia is becoming very central to this season’s storyline, the latter theory seems unlikely. Another theory suggests that Miss Capri, the music teacher, is actually Ophelia, given her advice to Wednesday about how to reach her full potential by letting the music (and her powers?) control her instead of the other way around. (Some fans are speculating that Miss Capri also might wind up being Wednesday’s new spirit guide.) Or could the woman be Tyler’s mom? That would explain how Galpin knew about the LOIS experiments. Her reaction to the Hyde (aka Tyler) also was not one of fear or surprise but more of a calm lack of emotion. But if she were his mom, why would Dr. Fairburn need to bring in Laurel/Marilyn to help with Tyler? (It should be noted that TV sleuths believe they have figured out who her character is based on the dubbing of the show, but we won’t spoil that here. You can find their thoughts online.)

  • How are Gus and Slurp connected?

Owen Painter as Slurp in episode 203 of 'Wednesday.'Owen Painter as Slurp in episode 203 of 'Wednesday.'
Image Credit: Courtesy of Netflix © 2025

Augustus Stonehearst (Philip Philmar), who is now in the psychiatric hospital, is a former Nevermore professor and father to Judi who began the experiments on Outcasts. A so-called Normie, Gus wanted to figure out how to transfer the Outcasts’ powers to himself and even experimented on his daughter, giving her the power to control the crows. However, his experiments caused him to go mad, leading to his being admitted as a patient at Willow Hill. At the end of episode 4, Slurp dines on Gus’ brains, but not before speaking to him (the first words the reanimated corpse utters): “Hello, old friend.” Do they know each other from Nevermore? From Willow Hill? One theory suggests that Slurp was Gus’ former student. Another posits that Slurp was one of his early subjects. Yet another suggests he may have helped Gus build the machine he used for experiments. Or perhaps a combination of all three is correct.

  • Is Slurp regenerating?

Owen Painter as Slurp in episode 205 of 'Wednesday.'Owen Painter as Slurp in episode 205 of 'Wednesday.'

We see that he’s growing a brain and was able to speak to Gus before he took a bit out of him. Fans have noted that he gets smarter every time he eats someone. At any rate, many believe this zombie will play a big role in the upcoming events given how much screen time the character has received thus far.

  • Who will kill (or try to kill) Enid?

Emmy Myers in 'Wednesday' season two.Emmy Myers in 'Wednesday' season two.

Before he escapes the psychiatric hospital, Tyler tells Wednesday he plans to kill Enid. But is the answer that obvious?

  • Is Laurel/Marilyn really dead?

Christina Ricci as Marilyn Thornhill in episode 204 of Wednesday.Christina Ricci as Marilyn Thornhill in episode 204 of Wednesday.

Co-creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar won’t say she’s definitively deceased. “Christina Ricci is just an amazing person and actor, and she brings such value to the show, and the character’s so wonderful. Never say never,” Gough told Netflix. Added Millar: “I will say, in this show, no one is officially dead dead. There’s always a way.”

  • What is Dort’s role in all this, and why is he so obsessed with money?

    'Wednesday' season two.'Wednesday' season two.

Dort asks Morticia to be this year’s gala chair and then extorts Bianca (Joy Sunday) to use her siren song to force the Addams matriarch to ask her mother for a big donation. One fan theory is that he owes a lot of money to someone. Adding to the suspicion surround him is a phone conversation Bianca and Ajax (Georgie Farmer) overheard him having in his office: “I’ve always had your back, you’ve always had mine. So relax. I’ve never been more confident about anything. I have it under control.” One theory speculates that he’s working with someone on a way to further the LOIS experiments. Another theory speculates that he himself is an Avian — someone who can control birds, like Judi — given his reaction to Wednesday’s query. Yet another fan suggests that he might be a descendant of Edgar Allan Poe given there’s been multiple references to the author this season, including Dort referencing a portrait of Poe and a close-up of Dort when the lyrics about Poe were being sung by the students in the school’s alma mater.

  • Is Bruno working with Agnes?

Noah B. Taylor and Emmy Myers in 'Wednesday' season two.Noah B. Taylor and Emmy Myers in 'Wednesday' season two.

Agnes, who can become invisible, was revealed to be Wednesday’s stalker. Meanwhile, Enid has a new love interest, Bruno, who stopped Enid when she bared her claws at Agnes. Many fans seem to think both are a bit suspicious and play a bigger role in everything that’s going on that it might seem. The evidence? Agnes tied up both Enid and Bruno in a twisted game that nearly killed them until Wednesday showed up (turns out it was all a stunt to impress the young Addams). But how did a girl of such a petite frame carry them both up inside that tower? Did she have help? If so, might it have been Bruno? Moreover, some fans suggest, the characters seems to be designed purely to keep Wednesday and her roommate preoccupied with other things.

  • Where is Cousin Itt?

    'Wednesday' season two.'Wednesday' season two.

We’ve seen everyone from Lurch to Fester, and now Morticia’s mother, so why has the hairy figure been absent thus far? Ortega has previously said she’d “love to see Cousin Itt,” but there’s been no indication that an appearance will happen in season 2. However, some fans have noted the inclusion of Cousin Itt products in the Wednesday toy line, leading many to wonder if that might be a hint of things to come.

  • Will Wednesday get her psychic powers back?

She says: When I started working with him, I would ask for notes. He wouldn’t give any. He was allowing me the space to find what was going to work. It created greater confidence, so you want to get weirder and weirder with it.She says: When I started working with him, I would ask for notes. He wouldn’t give any. He was allowing me the space to find what was going to work. It created greater confidence, so you want to get weirder and weirder with it.

Morticia burned the book that Wednesday believes would help her get her powers back. One theory suggests that someone — maybe Ophelia or even Wednesday’s own grandmother — is the culprit. Morticia reveals that Ophelia had the same psychic powers and starting experiencing the same black tears that Wednesday was. Another theory speculates that Grandmama is manipulating Wednesday as a way to drive a wedge between Morticia and her daughter.

  • How does Bianca’s mom, Gabrielle, figure into all of this?

Your guess is as good as ours, though interestingly, one theme that runs throughout this season thus faris that of the sometimes shaky mother-daughter relationship: Wednesday with Morticia, Morticia and Ophelia with Hester, and Bianca with Gabrielle.

  • Will we get to see Wednesday dance again?

    Tim BurtonTim Burton

Gaga will drop a new song, “Dead Dance,” that also will appear in an upcoming episode. One of season 1’s highlights was seeing Wednesday dance at a school function, so one can only wish for a reprise. However, director Tim Burton may have put a damper on any hopes for another viral moment, recently telling The Hollywood Reporter when asked about trying to top that moment: “This sums up what I like about working with Jenna. We didn’t do a big Broadway rehearsal [for the dance scenes]. We didn’t hire a choreographer. I picked the song and said, ‘You just go do it.’ She showed up on the day — I think she even had COVID — and we just did it. It was the most fun I had on the show because we just let it go. But to your question: No, we didn’t think about it this time because we didn’t think [about the dance number being a big deal] to begin with. It gets dangerous to say, ‘We have to do something like this again.’”

Part 1 of Wednesday Season 2 is streaming on Netflix. Part 2 will be released Sept. 3.

Early Oscar Predictions From Fall Festivals: No Frontrunner Yet

Early Oscar Predictions From Fall Festivals: No Frontrunner Yet

by jummy84 August 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Nine months into 2025, the machinery of Oscar campaigning has reached peak operational velocity. But beneath the familiar choreography lies something unprecedented: genuine uncertainty about who will emerge victorious.

The Academy has lit the first torch of awards season with the release of its initial wave of digital screeners. Seven modest offerings have been uploaded to its portal: “Becoming Led Zeppelin,” “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight,” “Hello Beautiful,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “KPop Demon Hunters,” “The Luckiest Man in America” and “The Ugly Stepsister.” These appetizers now populate the Academy Screening Room for more than 11,000 voting members — the first course in a sprawling feast of hundreds more titles set to drop weekly leading up to the 98th Academy Awards.

Yet this season, and also hinted by the past few years of Oscar predicting, we’re witnessing nothing less than the collapse of Hollywood’s established hierarchy.

For the first time in recent memory, no cinematic deity seems to be dominating the early landscape. There’s no Spielberg, no Scorsese — no filmmaker whose mere attachment to a project prompts industry genuflection before principal photography even begins. This absence of an ordained frontrunner has created something resembling actual democracy — unpredictable, messy and thrilling for awards obsessives, even as it unnerves studio strategists.

Unless Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” emerges from Venice with the force of “undeniability,” or Chloé Zhao’s period drama “Hamnet” delivers Shakespearean gravitas at Telluride, we’re confronting a field where previous Oscar winners may be relegated to spoiler status rather than frontrunners.

And let’s be honest, we should welcome that.

Peter Mountain/Netflix

In an industry long governed by the assumption that past success predicts future triumph, this shift levels the playing field — at least somewhat — for up-and-coming auteurs and actors to make a meaningful impact.

Netflix is executing what insiders call a strategy to focus on its “holy trinity” of hopefuls. Noah Baumbach’s dramedy “Jay Kelly” pairs George Clooney with Adam Sandler — a calculated bridge between generations designed to spark cultural conversation. Alongside it stands Kathryn Bigelow’s thriller “A House of Dynamite,” bolstered by Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson. And, of course, del Toro’s much-anticipated “Frankenstein.”

Netflix has long understood that a successful Oscar campaign requires portfolio diversification — multiple entry points into voters’ consciousness rather than banking on a single prestige title.

A24’s potential masterstroke is the company’s attempt to recast Dwayne Johnson as a dramatic actor and legitimate Oscar contender in Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine,” a sports biopic that pairs him with Emily Blunt, fresh off her “Oppenheimer” nomination. It’s audacious cultural arbitrage — leveraging Johnson’s populist appeal to expand the Academy’s demographic comfort zone. If successful, it could further redefine what Oscar-worthy casting looks like. How many of us thought the Academy would ever nominate a body-horror film like “The Substance” or and its star, Demi Moore?

Over at Venice, several international specialty titles serve as tactical wild cards. GKids’ anime “Scarlet,” Gianfranco Rosi’s Neapolitan nonfiction “Below the Clouds,” and Park Chan-wook’s South Korean drama “No Other Choice,” acquired by Neon, could all shake up category expectations.

Meanwhile, Alberto Barbera, Venice’s artistic director, has curated an out-of-competition section that could now function as sophisticated reputation management. Gus Van Sant returns with “Dead Man’s Wire” — his first major play since 2008’s “Milk” — starring Bill Skarsgård and Colman Domingo. Julian Schnabel’s “The Hand of Dante,” arriving 18 years after “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” will provide a new chance to see his name in the marquee.

Oscar Isaac appears in both Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” and Julian Schnabel’s upcoming film. This dual presence may renew awareness that, despite acclaimed performances in “Inside Llewyn Davis” (2013) and “A Most Violent Year” (2014), Isaac has yet to receive an Oscar nomination. His co-star Jacob Elordi could also emerge as a viable contender in what looks to be a highly competitive supporting actor race, going head-to-head with his Netflix counterpart Adam Sandler, who is rumored to deliver a standout turn in “Jay Kelly.” Let’s not forget Stellan Skarsgård is already an early frontrunner after Neon’s “Sentimental Value,” directed by Joachim Trier, was the runner-up at Cannes and will also play various fall festivals on the circuit.

Telluride’s secretive lineup continues to generate speculative — albeit organic — buzz. The Aug. 26 lineup, curated by Julie Huntsinger, is expected to include Edward Berger’s gambling thriller “Ballad of a Small Player,” starring Colin Farrell, and Scott Cooper’s Bruce Springsteen biopic “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” featuring Jeremy Allen White, who’s riding a two-Emmy streak (and a possible third) from “The Bear.”

While Netflix and Neon boast deep arsenals, it’s Focus Features that’s presenting its most audacious and dynamic lineup of contenders in years. In addition to Oscar winner Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet,” the indie studio will premiere Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film, “Bugonia,” at the Lido at Venice, with Jesse Plemons, Emma Stone and newcomer Aidan Delbis — all rumored to deliver standout turns. Then comes the return of three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, who emerges from an eight-year retirement for the family drama “Anemone,” set to premiere at the New York Film Festival. He co-wrote the film with his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, who makes his directorial debut.

One A-lister set to command attention is Julia Roberts, making a triumphant return to the big screen in Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt” from Amazon MGM Studios. The film, which premieres at Venice, marks the Oscar winner’s first major awards vehicle since “August: Osage County” (2013), following her Academy Award win for “Erin Brockovich” (2001). Early buzz suggests it could be a real head-turner, with a trailer that evokes the psychological tension of “Notes on a Scandal” and the artistic intrigue of “Tár.”

This season is sure to be challenging to navigate. And not only for strategists but for pundits alike.

The traditional awards season journey, from the National Board of Review to the Golden Globes and major guilds, will be disrupted by shifting timelines and evolving demographics. BAFTA and the Writers Guild of America have scheduled its nomination announcements until Tuesday, Jan. 27 — five days after the Oscar nominations are revealed. That means not a single industry-driven screenplay nomination, which would include those with AMPAS overlap, will be named before the Oscars’ big reveal.

As many know, the screenplay category has long been a vital component of a film’s chances at winning best picture. Only seven films have won best picture without a screenplay nomination: “Wings” (1927), “The Broadway Melody” (1928), “Grand Hotel” (1932), “Cavalcade” (1933), “Hamlet” (1948), “The Sound of Music” (1965) and “Titanic” (1997).

Studios are expected to mount highly focused and concentrated campaigns to ensure their screenwriters are not overlooked, in order to not making their ultimate Oscar goal, anymore difficult.

Nonetheless, in the last decade, simply following “Oscar stats” has proven less reliable. Consider “CODA’s” best picture win for Apple with zero technical nominations, or how “Everything Everywhere All at Once” transformed from quirky genre piece to a cultural juggernaut. Traditional metrics are becoming archaeological relics in the predicting world.

I’ll admit, predictions made in August are little more than sophisticated brand positioning. Early frontrunner status tends to reflect industry esteem — not necessarily voter enthusiasm for films nobody has watched yet. Remember: Few pundits had 2016’s “Moonlight” on their radar before it premiered at Telluride and went on to topple the musical “La La Land” in the eleventh hour.

The Academy’s demographic transformation has created ideological and generational rifts that go beyond artistic taste. Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “The Secret Agent,” bolstered by a Cannes best director win, could challenge American dominance in storytelling with another strong Brazilian entry. Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or winner “It Was Just an Accident” can do the same — especially from an auteur who has been imprisoned for his art. That’s a narrative that can go far if it manages to become France’s official submission, if it can fend off Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague,” which Netflix picked up at Cannes.

The monthlong marathon from Venice to the New York Film Festival remains the industry’s most transparent meritocracy — where artistic quality can still (occasionally) overcome marketing budgets and studio influence. Laura Poitras and Mark Obenhaus’s decision to thread their Seymour Hersh documentary “Cover Up” through all four major festivals signals either supreme confidence or strategic necessity. That film will be looking for a U.S. distributor along the way.

The newly introduced best casting category adds another layer of uncertainty and complexity. Whether it becomes a stepping stone to best picture — perhaps like film editing — or might stand alone like BAFTA’s casting category, it will reshape campaign planning for years to come.

What emerges from this analysis is a simple truth: Oscar season has evolved beyond prediction models into something closer to a real democracy, believe it or not. It’s messier, less predictable and far more compelling. The festival circuit remains the battleground where artistic merit can triumph over institutional power. A long standing ovation can launch a campaign. A muddled response can tank one.

May the best story win.
