Wolf Alice Electrify with Cathartic Power in Oakland » PopMatters

by jummy84 October 29, 2025
written by jummy84

It’s a Friday night in uptown Oakland, and there’s a buzz in the air as British rockers Wolf Alice arrive at the Fox Theater on their much-anticipated fall tour. The band have won growing acclaim with each of their four albums, but there were four years between the release of 2021’s Blue Weekend and 2025’s The Clearing.

Thus, there’s been a long wait to see Wolf Alice back on tour. The group’s first major-label album since signing with Columbia Records last year is a polished, ambitious collection of songs that explores an array of sonic landscapes. There’s dream pop, power ballads, full-tilt alternative rock, and tunes that defy easy categorization as dynamic vocalist Ellie Rowsell and her cohorts explore their craft.

Sonic diversity is a Wolf Alice trademark, but there’s also a more seasoned approach on The Clearing. The group have been around the block a few times and are moving into their 30s, a time when one starts to ponder life’s existential questions more deeply. “I think a lot of it is like, maybe you think when you’re younger that you’re going to get older and understand yourself and everything around you a bit more,” Rowsell told Rolling Stone UK earlier this year. “Maybe getting older is understanding that you might never. You don’t always figure it out. You don’t figure yourself out because you’re always changing.”

Change can be a fine line in the rock world, where fans want the familiar sound they fell in love with. However, it’s the bands that can maintain their original vibe while also growing and experimenting with their art who tend to have the most enduring careers. Thus, Wolf Alice are poised to continue their ascent. Guitarist Joff Oddie has had to stay home, missing the fall tour while awaiting the birth of his first child. Reports indicate he hand-picked guitarist John Victor to fill in for him, along with keyboardist Ryan Malcolm.

The first few songs here at the Fox Theater showcase the band’s dream pop side, highlighted by the atmospheric vibe of “Delicious Things” from Blue Weekend. Rowsell wears what appears to be a sequined white leotard, white stockings, and white boots, making her look like a cross between an Olympic gymnast and a superheroine from The X-Men.

The set ignites on “Formidable Cool”, an electrifying hard rocker from 2017’s Visions of a Life. Bassist Theo Ellis and drummer Joel Amey lay down a wicked groove, and the guitars crank up the amps to send the group’s sound to a more powerful sonic landscape. The stylish Rowsell seems to embody the concept of formidable cool, with what feels like a shamanic presence, and it becomes evident that she is a first-tier rock goddess and a solid guitarist.

Amey takes the lead vocal on “White Horses”, a vibrant tune about personal identity from the new record, where Wolf Alice soar with a crisp upbeat sound that takes on a multi-dimensional flavor with Rowsell coming in for the choruses. It’s a standout track on the album that really comes alive onstage as the audience grows increasingly engaged. Wolf Alice’s sound clearly has more of an edge in the live setting, and it’s exhilarating to experience.

“Bros” from 2015’s My Love is Cool returns to the dream pop realm and is clearly a fan favorite, as Rowsell gets the adoring audience clapping in unison. “Your Loves Whore” is another song from that 2015 release that soars, a power pop gem where Rowsell’s voice shines. Wolf Alice mix it up when Amey and Malcolm come out front to join Rowsell for trio harmonies on “Safe From Heartbreak (if you never fall in love)”, winning simpatico cheers when they sing, “You fucked with my feelings.”

A showcase moment for Rowsell occurs on “The Sofa”, the dreamy closing track from The Clearing. At first listen, the song may seem like an oddly emotional number about chilling on one’s couch, but the song has deeper layers, both sonically and thematically, as Rowsell explores life’s conflicting emotions. She sings about having a wild side, but sometimes she just wants to lie there on the sofa all day long. A lot of people can probably relate, but only Ellie Rowsell turns this universal feeling into an existential power ballad, with the crowd waving their hands back and forth in sympathetic unison.

“Bread Butter Tea Sugar” follows as an upbeat number that blends a Beatlesque production vibe from the Sgt. Pepper’s era with 1970s pop rock, as Rowsell continues to shine with a giant star backdrop behind her. Wolf Alice crank the energy level to incendiary levels on the combo of “Yuk Foo” from Visions of a Life and “Play the Greatest Hits” from Blue Weekend. There are extra psychedelic lighting effects and wild, side-energy from Rowsell as she headbangs and swings her long hair around like a woman possessed. The energy is contagious, as the Fox is really rocking out now.

“Lipstick on the Glass” returns to a mid-tempo level, but there’s a shimmering vibe as Rowsell emotes in a mesmerizing way over a tight bass line, creating a song that feels like it could be from a neo-noir film soundtrack. “Giant Peach” is a rocker from the first album with a punk edge that revs things up again in sensational fashion. Ellie Rowsell can hang with the best in dream pop, but she transforms into a genuine force of nature on the harder-rocking songs with her mesmerizing presence.

“I’ll tell you one thing, thank god for the West Coast of America,” bassist Theo Ellis says sincerely, thanking everyone for coming out before the band launch into one of their most scintillating songs with “Smile” from Blue Weekend. It’s a Wolf Alice tour de force with the heavy groove, the tight riffs, and Rowsell’s syncopated freestyle type vocals as she sings of lost souls congregating at the bar to remember who they are, before a big chorus. Rowsell is also back on guitar here, rocking out like the rock star that she is.

“Bloom Baby Bloom” pairs well with “Smile”, the hard-rocking first single from the new album that feels larger than life as Rowsell belts out a powerful vocal over big hooks and a fierce beat, culminating in a climactic conclusion to the set.”When I’m playing this song, I’m just trying to channel that Muppet that plays the drums – you know, Animal. Yeah. Just on the floor tom for, like, three-and-a-half minutes. So maybe I’m trying to outgrow my nonanimal persona and into my animal persona,” drummer Joel Amey told NPR about his approach to “Bloom Baby Bloom”, which seems fitting for the song’s high energy level.

“A primal scream to remind yourself that you are brilliant as you are and not to let anyone let you forget that. Maybe when you feel in doubt of your own strength and power, like, it could serve as a kind of encouragement or something that you are amazing,” Rowsell added regarding her intention with the song, highlighting rock’s ever-compelling power to foster and encourage personal empowerment.

The encore of “The Last Man on Earth” starts as a contemplative ballad, before taking off with a shimmering sonic grandeur as Rowsell sings, “You’d like a light to shine on you, Let it shine on you,” seemingly channeling a bit of the vibe from the Rolling Stones‘ “Shine a Light”. It hits the feels like sonic honey for the soul, setting up the finale of the band’s hit power-pop song “Don’t Delete the Kisses”.

It’s been a sensational night at the Fox Theater, as Wolf Alice continue to build on their legend that began with taking their name from a short story of the same name by Angela Carter. It’s apparently a variant of “Little Red Riding Hood” from the perspective of a feral child, which perhaps provides some explanation for how fierce Ellie Rowsell can seem at times onstage. It’s been said that rock ‘n’ roll may not be able to change the world, but that it can get you through the night. Tonight’s performance has undoubtedly been one of those, as fans exit feeling blessed to bask in the uplifting power of Wolf Alice.

‘Cornucopia Live’ Captures Björk At the Height of Her Live Power

by jummy84 October 28, 2025
written by jummy84

The best concert albums bring home the excitement of the live experience. Though the songs might not sound as polished as the studio versions, live records present us with different iterations of music that have continued to gestate long after the producer has applied the finishing touches. On triple-live album Cornucopia Live, released October 24, Björk distills what was a multimedia experience down to its very essence: the music.

Taken from the September 1, 2023, performance at the Altice Arena in Lisbon, Cornucopia was initially released as a concert film directed by Ísold Uggadóttir earlier this year, along with a shortened audio-only version streaming on Apple Music. This new version, released on vinyl and CD, contains the entire 90-minute experience. The concert film is also available on DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray.

The show was part of Björk’s Cornucopia tour, which ran from 2019 to 2023. With half its songs pulled from Utopia (2017), the rest of the set is drawn from various corners of the musician’s career, including songs from her newest album Fossora (2022). At an hour and a half, the live record certainly feels its length at times, but the advantage to the vinyl version is the opportunity to take breaks between each side.

After a brief introduction featuring nature sounds, Björk begins the concert with a divinely ethereal version of “The Gate.” Backed by a choir, strings, and other instruments such as flute, Björk’s voice commands the listener’s attention. Without the extravagant visuals to pull attention away, this audio-only iteration puts the singer front and center without distraction. For example, on “Show Me Forgiveness” from Medúlla (2004), she turns in an emotional, captivating a capella performance. Meanwhile, “Isobel”—the sole song from Björk’s ’90s output—is updated to a more languid pace but still retains the twitchy feeling of the original.

As on Utopia, flute plays a major role here. The instrument playfully courses over the brief, spoken-word “Arpeggio.” But not everything is lightness here. The flute stabs in devastating blows over the nearly 11-minute “Body Memory.” And “Sue Me,” which comes later in the record, can feel rough-hewn. Yet, like all of Björk’s music, beauty peeks out from even the most difficult terrain. By the time Cornucopia Live ends with a gorgeously devastating version of “Future Forever,” we are reminded yet again that Björk is a demanding artist who refuses to pander. She does not tour often and when she does, the shows are often reserved for major cities. Cornucopia Live allows those who missed the tour, and those who want to relive it, the chance to experience the power of Björk live.

Miley Cyrus Takes the Plunge Into Power Suiting

by jummy84 October 26, 2025

It’s no wonder Cyrus finds kinship in the vision of Mugler’s creative director Miguel Castro Freitas: the spring 2026 show saw Freitas articulate his own take on the house’s precise, exacting lexicon. There were those iconic hourglass silhouettes and va-va-voom corsets, but also pin sharp pants and couture-level draping, and some quite fabulous feather and jewel moments. Cyrus opted for the more simple—but still powerfully chic—look 15 from the collection.

The Miley Cyrus compendium for personal style is maximalist but refined, with ’70s inflected aesthetics and modern, sexy twists by way of strong-shouldered Saint Laurent jackets and suiting, Alaïa gowns, and lots of leather. There is an enduring punk rock persona too, with some more subversive, feminine details. She spans that darker, nipped in femme fatale that Mugler does so well, while also looking to more avant-garde looks of Alexander McQueen. Cyrus can’t resist exploring the Mugler archives too, especially for onstage outfits.

Power suiting, of course, continues to be a defining fall trend, enjoyed by everyone from Demi Moore in Saint Laurent and tailored Thom Browne to Julia Roberts in Versace and Victoria Beckham in her own designs. Not brave enough for the power suit plunge a la Miley? There’s plenty of other options to incorporate into your fall wardrobe.

bitchy | Will Parliament give the monarch the power to strip all royal titles?

by jummy84 October 24, 2025
written by jummy84

As an American, I am often confused by the British monarchy and government’s “separation of powers.” Before this week, it seemed like prime ministers and Parliament basically left all of the title debates and housing issues up to the monarch’s prerogative. But Prince Andrew’s situation has changed everything, as MPs are loudly fuming about the monarchy’s mismanagement of this crisis. There is a growing political consensus that Andrew cannot be allowed to live out his days in a grand and rent-free 30-room mansion on the Windsor estate. It’s very likely that Parliament will have a formal inquiry into Royal Lodge and perhaps even the wider mismanagement of the Crown Estates. But there’s also proposed legislation to give the monarch power to remove titles on his own, only needing a “recommendation” from Parliament. The NY Times tried to explain:

Britain has been one of the world’s most durable constitutional monarchies, in part because its two pillars — the crown and Parliament — stay out of each other’s business. King Charles III steers clear of politics, while Prime Minister Keir Starmer leaves the affairs of the royal family to the monarch. That longstanding arrangement has come under rare stress in the last week, following scandalous new disclosures about Prince Andrew, the king’s younger brother, and his ties to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The details were outlined in a newly published email between Andrew and Mr. Epstein, and in a memoir by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, an Epstein victim who accused Andrew of raping her when she was a teenager — an accusation he denies. They have led to calls for him to be stripped of his most familiar title, prince. This would likely require an act of parliament.

That, in turn, has set off a chicken-and-egg debate. The government says the decision of whether to deprive Andrew of his titles is one for the king, not for Mr. Starmer. Officials at Buckingham Palace say it would be improper for the king to take any position on a parliamentary act that might come before him for royal assent. Both sides are drawing on centuries of convention, a powerful argument in a country with an unwritten constitution. Yet as the outcry grows over Andrew’s alleged misconduct during his friendship with Mr. Epstein, falling back on century-old laws and even more ancient customs is proving contentious.

“The argument that this is purely a matter for the royal family will not wash,” said Vernon Bogdanor, an expert on the constitutional monarchy at King’s College London. “Our monarchy since 1689 has been a parliamentary one. It exists only so long as Parliament, representing the people, want it to continue.”

On Wednesday, a Labour member of Parliament, Rachael Maskell, introduced a bill that would give the king the authority to rescind royal titles on his own initiative, following a recommendation from a parliamentary committee. Without the government’s support, however, it has little chance to pass.

Last Friday, Andrew announced that he would stop using one of his titles, the Duke of York, a step he took under pressure from his brother Charles. But he did not formally lose either the dukedom or the title of prince, to which he is entitled under a 1917 royal prerogative, known as a Letters Patent. Under that decree, issued by King George V, the title of prince or princess is limited to the child of a monarch, the child of the sons of a monarch, and the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales, the heir to the throne. Amending the Letters Patent to strip Andrew of his title is possible, experts have said, but it would be such a grave, unusual step that it would probably happen only if the king and the government agreed in advance.

[From The NY Times]

This is interesting from a how-the-sausage-is-made perspective, but it also has larger repercussions. Let’s be real – everyone can agree that Andrew should be stripped of all of his titles and that he should be forced onto an ice floe and set out to sea. THAT is not the debate. The real debate is: who will do the title-stripping and what happens if and when we give the monarch power to strip titles at will, with nominal input from the government? The actual debate is “what happens when we have a king who is petty, jealous and violently unfit to lead, and who uses his power to childishly settle scores?” Gee, I wonder why everyone is hesitating to give the crown these powers???

What 185,000 Events Have Taught Me About the Power of Entertainment

by jummy84 October 22, 2025
written by jummy84

By David Bevan, Founder and Director of Alive Network Entertainment Agency

When I founded Alive Network back in 1999, live entertainment at events was often seen as an afterthought — something to book once the venue, catering, and logistics were in place. Over two decades later, having supplied performers to 185,000+ events ranging from weddings and private parties to corporate celebrations for brands like BBC, Google, Microsoft, and Bentley, I can say with certainty: entertainment is not an optional extra. It’s the glue that holds an event together, the spark that transforms logistics into experiences.

Entertainment is the Emotional Anchor

Events are about people. While venues and catering provide structure, it’s the entertainment that creates emotional connection.

  • A live band can turn a corporate dinner into a celebration.
  • A magician or caricaturist can break the ice at a networking event.
  • A DJ or saxophonist can lift energy from polite conversation to unforgettable dancefloor moments.

Sometimes all it takes is the energy of a live rock and pop band to shift a room from polite conversation into a full-scale celebration. When audiences remember an event years later, it’s rarely the menu they recall — it’s the feeling created by entertainment.

The Business Case for Entertainment

It’s not just about fun; there’s a clear ROI for organisations investing in live performance:

  • Engagement: Staff and guests are more receptive when they’re relaxed and entertained.
  • Branding: The entertainment chosen reflects the host organisation’s values and creativity.
  • Memorability: Attendees are far more likely to share, post, and talk about events that had a unique entertainment element.

From networking mixers to large-scale conferences, choosing the right corporate entertainment can transform a formal agenda into a memorable shared experience. Over the years, I’ve seen entertainment elevate events into PR moments in their own right — generating social content, boosting brand affinity, and even securing repeat attendance.

What 185,000 Events Have Taught Me

  1. Fit is everything – The right act for one audience may miss the mark for another. Tailoring entertainment to audience demographics and event objectives is key. For inspiration, we’ve curated our Top 50 corporate event bands — proven acts that deliver energy and engagement across different audiences.
  2. Diversity matters – From string quartets to street performers, variety not only delights but also makes events more inclusive.
  3. Quality is non-negotiable – Professional performers elevate the entire event; one weak act can undo months of planning.
  4. Entertainment is logistics too – Booking the right act isn’t just about talent, but about reliability, timing, and seamless integration with the wider event schedule.
  5. Adaptability wins – Over 25 years we’ve seen everything, from last-minute weather changes at outdoor weddings to CEOs unexpectedly joining bands on stage. The best entertainment can pivot and still deliver magic.

Looking Ahead

As hybrid and immersive events grow, entertainment will continue to evolve. We’re already seeing greater demand for interactive performers, digital integrations, and personalisation at scale. Yet the essence remains the same: creating experiences that connect people on a human level.

After more than two decades and £130m of work secured for our artists, I believe the future belongs to event planners and businesses who recognise that entertainment isn’t just an addition — it’s the foundation of unforgettable events.

Virat Kohli’s sister-in-law Chetna Kohli shared a post on Diwali, sharing that she chooses to move beyond ‘noise of celebration into the serenity of awareness.’

Anushka Sharma has shared a shoutout for Virat Kohli’s sister-in-law, Chetna Kohli, for highlighting the power of Yoga and taking care of one’s health. Anushka, who keeps her personal life away from the media, often takes to her social media to share pictures of her advertisements and shoutouts for Virat. On Tuesday, Chetna’s post on Diwali caught the actor’s attention, and she shared that she is ‘proud’ of her.

Anushka Sharma is ‘proud’ of her jethani Chetna Kohli.

What Anushka said

In the post, Chetna performed various asanas and wrote a long note in the caption. It began, “My poses are far from perfect and that’s where my practice lives. Somedays I tremble, waver and somedays I flow. But every attempt is a prayer of becoming and willingness to learn, unlearn & evolve. A reminder that GROWTH IS SACRED EVEN IN ITS IMPERFECTIONS.”

She added, ‘This Diwali, I offer my practice to the divine light within. I choose to light up myself to transform not the world around me but the one within me. To let the inner flame of truth burn away self doubt, fear, illusion, limitation and return to the Essence of who I am. MAY I RISE BEYOND THE NOISE OF CELEBRATION INTO THE SERENITY OF AWARENESS. MAY I GLOW NOT BECAUSE I WISH TO BE SEEN, BUT BECAUSE I HAVE LEARNED TO SEE.”

The Time I Set My Amp on Fire Through the Power of Rock

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

On one of the U.S. tours to support the album Alien Lanes, Guided By Voices, for whom I played bass guitar at that time, did a show at a club in Los Angeles called Spaceland. It was so new it didn’t even have a stage. The P.A. system was not top flight, either, which is where the trouble started.

On the guest list that night was the main guy from the band Soul Asylum, who was dating the girl from Edward Scissorhands at the time, so we were a little bit excited that a real Hollywood celebrity might show up to our show. Whether the Soul Asylum person or his date showed up, I could not say. This was a time, please understand, before GBV were regularly visited backstage in Los Angeles by, for instance, the guy from Zoolander, the little girl from E.T., that one thin blonde girl from that one movie, and possibly Che Guevara (actually, Benicio Del Toro, who played him in the movie). Because nobody had heard of the band yet, except people who liked rock music, and the guy from Soul Asylum.

Despite our lack of celebrity clout, the place was packed. The tiny sound system couldn’t cope. Especially the monitors. Things got so bad that our singer, Bob, actually stopped the show at one point and sat down on the floor, and said into the mic that he wasn’t going to play another song until someone fixed the fucking monitors. His voice was almost hoarse because we had been on tour for some time, and had only a couple of shows left on this particular leg.

The soundman at the club did something to the monitors where it was possible for Bob and Kevin to at least hear the vocals, so that Bob didn’t blow out his voice, but I’m pretty sure he was in a bad mood and in a hurry to get off the stage. He signaled that we would play “Exit Flagger,” and that that would be our last song.

“Exit Flagger” was, when I first heard it, and remains to this day, one of my very favorite Guided By Voices songs. It has a very simple structure, and adeptly performs that neat magic trick where a song can be both anthemic and melancholic at the same time. Towards the end of the song, where Bob and Toby keep singing “Exit Flagger” over and over, I used to go kind of crazy with my bass runs.

It was always a blast to play that closing bit, especially when drunk, because everyone knows that when you are drunk your fingers move faster. But what happened next was really a little extraordinary.

To this day, I will never know whether my (quoting Toby Sprout) “smoking” bass runs or some technical glitch in the bass cabinet caused my amp to cut out at the exact moment the song ended. I turned around to look for the reason, only to find that the cabinet was on fire. I mean, literally on fire. Flames were coming out of it. Toby turned around at the same time, noticed the flames, and casually picked up a cup of beer and poured it over them. The flames went out. Toby muttered something about “wasting good beer,” and that was that.

I can’t explain the cause, I can only speculate. And because I can only speculate, I prefer the satisfying explanation that “Exit Flagger” set my bass amp on fire through the power of rock. Having no use for it, and not wishing to load its heavy carcass into the van, I left the scorched wreck on the floor of Spaceland. It stood where it had died, I like to think proudly, or nobly, but dead all the same.
Our next show was a festival somewhere in San Diego. Luckily, our management had already got in touch with one of the other bands, who agreed to lend us their bass rig for our set. The kid who showed me how to use the rig was very nice; I can’t remember his name. He played with a band none of us had ever heard of before, and some of us have not listened to ever again, except accidentally, but I would like to stress: very nice people. The band was called No Doubt, which is fitting, because that is how I feel about the supernatural provenance of my amp’s fiery death.

‘After The Hunt’s Luca Guadagnino On Film’s Power & Desire Dynamics

Luca Guadagnino, director of Amazon MGM Studios‘ picture After The Hunt, has revealed what drew him to the debut script of Nora Garrett.

After The Hunt follows a college professor (Julia Roberts) who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star pupil (Ayo Edebiri) levels an accusation against one of her colleagues (Andrew Garfield), and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come to light.

Guadagnino regular Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloë Sevigny also star along with Lío Mehiel, Thaddea Graham, Will Price, Christine Dye, and Burgess Byrd.

Appearing on stage at Deadline’s Contenders London event on Saturday, the Oscar-nominated Italian director said the dynamics of power and desire were appealing to him. He recalled reading Garrett’s script for the first time on a flight.

“It struck me the way in which Nora could bring together a very particular story in a very specific place, and make it a stage for idiosyncrasies and impulses that could speak to everybody,” he explained.

Garrett, an actress who has appeared in Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, said it was “difficult to put into words” how grateful she was that Guadagnino took on the project after his previous work on films like Call Me by Your Name and Challengers.

Unpacking the ambition behind the story, she said: “I was really interested in someone who had such a powerful mechanism of self-denialism, and that mechanism is what supported their effort towards external success in a way that was powerful and propulsive, but hampered them in an emotional integrity way.”

Cinematographer Malik Hassan Sayeed said they wanted After the Hunt to feel like it was shot in the 1980s, using a single lens and other technology from that time. “He’s [Guadagnino] very precise and masterful at his craft, and I think it was an amazing pairing for us,” Hassan Sayeed said.

Guadagnino praised casting director Jessica Ronane for her “astonishing” work in balancing a cast that was “so wide and deep.” Roanne said it was a “great responsibility and a great thrill” to work on the movie.

After The Hunt premiered on October 10.

John Lennon / Yoko Ono / Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band / Elephant’s Memory: Power to the People (The Ultimate Collection) Album Review

At the One To One concerts, Lennon displayed a certain nervous energy, which pairs well with the sleazeball boogie of Elephant’s Memory, a local NYC band best known for its contributions to the soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy. Elephant’s Memory served as the backing band for Some Time, but were too slack and lackadaisical to get through the One To One concerts without the reinforcement of drummer Jim Keltner, who helps give the performance a serious, heavy swing.

Frontloading Power to the People with the One To One performances—the two sets are here, along with a hybrid highlights disc—illustrates how Lennon spent the early ’70s wallowing in the pleasures of old-time rock’n’roll. Even when he and Ono are having an improvisatory freak-out with Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention, it’s rooted in basic three-chord changes. Almost all of the songs John and Yoko wrote during this period are deliberately simple: “Sisters, O Sisters” is a revved-up girl group number, “Attica State” and “John Sinclair” are straightforward blues, “The Luck of the Irish” is a folk ballad, ”New York City” is high-octane Chuck Berry boogie.

The exception to the rule is the one song of the period that isn’t here: “Woman is the N***** of the World,” an overblown wall-of-sound homage intended as an anthem of feminist solidarity, inspired by a slogan Yoko Ono likely adapted from a line in Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God. The box set ignores that track (despite the fact that Lennon chose it as Some Time’s single), cutting it out of the new mixes of the album and the accompanying concerts. Its absence helps shift the story towards Lennon’s continued return to the big bang of 1950s rock’n’roll during this volatile period. Left to his own devices, he sings oldies: the last song disc here is a “Home Jam,” where he’s sitting around the house strumming Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly tunes. On its cousin “Studio Jam” disc, Lennon leads his band through Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley rockers. These passages are loose, maybe even to a fault, but they’re charming, capturing one of the greatest rock vocalists singing unencumbered by an audience.

These two discs of informal jams are the ideal coda to Power to the People, which chronicles the era when Lennon was keenly aware that he was performing at all times. It wasn’t just that he was playing his first live shows since the breakup of the Beatles. Lennon and Ono were omnipresent in 1971 and 1972, heading off to Ann Arbor to play a rally to free John Sinclair, strumming songs with Phil Ochs in a hotel room, accepting seemingly any offer to appear on TV, as evidenced by their appearance on the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy telethon. A rousing reggae-fied version of “Give Peace a Chance,” plucked from the telethon, features Lewis himself as part of the onstage chorus; his appearance crystallizes the essential oddness of this period. Even as he got his hands grimy in the leftist underground, Lennon remained one of the most famous men in the world, using mainstream platforms to preach politics to the masses. The dissonance of this intersection remains intriguing, long after the headlines have faded away.
