‘Harry Potter’ Series Is ‘Such a Delightful Adaptation’: HBO Max Exec

HBO‘s upcoming “Harry Potter” series is shaping up to be “such a delightful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s books, according to HBO Max head of original content Sarah Aubrey.

Speaking on a panel at Content London on Wednesday, Aubrey revealed that she is visiting the set of the series tomorrow. “I just keep thinking, it’s such a delightful adaptation of the books,” she teased. “And I think when people watch it, they [will] think, ‘These are the books.’”

Aubrey added that the series is a great representation of the U.K. industry as a whole. “It’s created by a British writer, it’s directed by a British filmmaker and its craftspeople are the best that this country has to offer,” she said. “I’m so excited for everyone to see it.”

Aubrey’s keynote at Content London came just hours after HBO Max announced a Jan. 13 launch date for the streamer in territories including Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. During her presentation, Aubrey spoke about the original content HBO Max has in the pipeline in those countries, including German production “4 Blocks Zero,” which she called a “fantastic, gritty thriller,” and Marco Bellocchio’s Italian series “Portobello,” which she said “swept the festival circuit.”

Channel 4’s Summerwater gets ominous first look with Harry Potter legend

by jummy84 November 2, 2025
written by jummy84

Dougary Scott stars alongside Harry Potter legend Shirley Henderson (yes, Moaning Myrtle!) in the unsettling first look trailer at new Channel 4 drama Summerwater.

The new six-part Scottish drama is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by author Sarah Moss and boasts plenty of atmosphere in this promo, which airs on Channel 4 tonight (Sunday 2nd November 2025).

Summerwater has been adapted by Utopia scribe John Donnelly and is directed by TV crime drama veterans Robert McKillop and Fiona Walton.

The footage teases a non-linear narrative as a destructive event in a Scottish holiday park prompts questions about the dramatic lives of those in residence.

The official synopsis from Channel 4 reads: “Set predominantly at a remote loch-side Scottish holiday cabin park, Summerwater looks at the simmering tensions between holidaymakers that eventually erupt into a devastating climax.”

If the box above is not showing, you may need to change your privacy settings. In the Radio Times site footer, click ‘Manage Privacy Settings’. Under ‘Site Vendors’, consent to ‘YouTube’, then press Save & Exit.

The synopsis continues: “Weaving together the lives of several families as they navigate unspoken conflicts, private dilemmas, and fleeting moments of beauty from their disparate cabins, the story flashes back to dramatic events in key characters’ lives before their holiday which may have consequences in the present.”

Channel 4 itself boasts that the show is “thrilling and compulsive” and “character-led”.

Could this be a classic whodunnit? Or something all the more disturbing?

Alongside Scott and Henderson, who are visible in the trailer, the drama also features performances from Blue Lights favourite Valene Kane, Showtrial’s Anna Próchniak, House of the Dragon actor Gabriel Scott, Vigil’s Anders Hayward, and The White Lotus season 3 actor Arnas Fedaravičiu.

We’ll have to see who is playing a guilty party when the drama finally arrives on our screens…

Summerwater airs on Channel 4 in November.

John Lithgow was spotted as Dumbledore at a beach in Cornwall as he shoots for HBO’s Harry Potter TV reboot, and as expected, Potterheads shared their excitement as the pictures leaked on social media. The Harry Potter TV show is expected to release in 2027, and fans earlier also got a peek of Nick Frost as Hagrid alongside Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter.

John Lithgow as Dumbledore

A Redditor, with the username u/i-tiresias, shared a couple of snippets from the shoot of the Harry Potter TV show. The post was titled, “Dumbledore (John Lithgow) spotted on a beach in Cornwall, England, filming for the new Harry Potter series.

The post quickly became viral, and Potterheads started commenting their views on it. A curious Redditor said, “What scene does Dumbledore have on the beach? Only one I can think of is maybe the HBP seaside cave thing, but that’s way later in the series.”

Another user guessed, “Is this the scene where Dumbledore becomes the Bay Harbor Butcher?”

A lot of Redditors also pointed out that John looked ‘huge’. A comment read, “The 2nd picture looks like they have him on a really long leash, like they’re letting him play in the sea for a little bit as a treat lil.”

To this, a user replied, “Honestly it’s a confusing perspective too. I know he’s a bigger guy but he looks massive here lol.” Another user pointed out the same and wrote, “He looks massive in that second picture.”

As per Metro, Lithgow was not just taking a stroll in the grand costume of Dumbledore, rather was also reading lines from cue cards.

Harry Potter TV series | Release date speculation and latest news

by jummy84 October 1, 2025
written by jummy84

These include not only the IT Crowd’s Katherine Parkinson playing Molly Weasley, but also Dexter’s John Lithgow playing Albus Dumbledore, and Nick Frost (the Cornetto Trilogy) taking on the mantle of Rubeus Hagrid.

Filming has already begun for the first season, adapting the Philosopher’s Stone book into eight episodes — making it four times the length of the first among the Harry Potter movies. However, for more on the Harry Potter series’, including the potential release date, more casting news, and the TV show’s plot, the rest of this watch guide below has you covered.

Harry Potter TV series release date speculation

JK Rowling.

HBO’s Harry Potter adaptation is currently expected to premiere in 2027, following comments by CEO & President of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav.

Originally reported by TVLine, Zaslav told reporters back in November 2024: “Oh, it could probably be [2027], something like that”.

“But don’t hold me to any of that, because we’re just getting started in the writing and casting process”.

Although an exact release date hasn’t been announced yet, we’ll update this page as soon as we hear more.

A lot has happened since Zaslav’s comments, including the casting of the key actors, but the logistics still look like a 2027 release date for the Harry Potter show is doable.

Filming for the new Harry Potter began in July 2025, beginning what is intended to be a seven-season adaptation, taking place across the UK in locations like London Zoo, King’s Cross Station, and Hertfordshire.

If filming wraps by the end of 2025, that gives HBO a full year for post-production (which is likely to be quite complicated for a big-budget fantasy series), as well as getting started on season 2.

One obvious concern is making sure the show stays on track to release one new season per year, so the lead actors don’t end up growing too old for their roles.

Speaking about HBO’s plans to film new seasons as quickly and efficiently as possible, HBO CEO Casey Bloys, when talking to Collider’s Steve Weintraub at HBO press event, said: “From 11 to 13, is a big jump in kids’ lives. You can get away with 13 to 15, something like that. So we are going to have to think about scheduling and shooting so that they don’t grow too much between seasons. It is a consideration.”

“I think an annual schedule would be tough, but it depends on how much is written ahead of time.”

Bloys also confirmed that author JK Rowling is involved in the project, amid ongoing controversy regarding her views on trans rights, which have turned many former fans away from the franchise.

In response to these concerns, an HBO spokesperson said (via Variety): “We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter — the heartwarming books that speak to power of friendship, resolve and acceptance”.

“J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”

This has done little to quell concerns over Rowling’s impact as a public figure, and how her income from the Potter franchise may be used to facilitate anti-LGBTQ+ projects.

In recent years, the author was notably absent from the 20-year anniversary special of the Harry Potter movies, and the 2023 Hogwarts Legacy spin-off game faced boycotts. Meanwhile, several fan-run organisations have distanced themselves from Rowling, including the international association for real-life Quidditch, which has renamed the sport “quadball.”

Who will be the cast starring in the Harry Potter TV series?

Arabella Stanton smiling into camera

Arabella Stanton. HBO Max

As mentioned above, the lead stars playing Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger have been confirmed. Back in September, there was an open casting call looking for the three kids, with Warner boss Channing Dungey admitting it would be “tricky” to allocate the roles (via Variety).

Now we know that, in HBO’s Harry Potter series, Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione and Alastair Stout will play Ron.

Stanton is known for having previously starred in the West End production of Matilda, as well as the Andrew Lloyd Webber production of Starlight Express. Stout has been seen in TV advertisements, while McLaughlin will be seen in Sky Original comedy Grow.

Following the lead actors being announced, showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director/executive producer Mark Mylod said in a statement to Variety: “After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione and Ron”.

“The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.”

Meanwhile, HBO previously announced that John Lithgow is set to play Albus Dumbledore in the new Harry Potter show.

Lithgow previously said of taking on the role: “It came as a total surprise to me. I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid. But I’m very excited.”

Elsewhere, Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) will star as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer (Tumbleweeds) will star as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) will appear as Rubeus Hagrid.

While those four series regulars had previously been rumoured to be joining the project, some other new additions have been more unexpected.

The more surprising additions are Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show) as Argus Filch, who will appear in guest/recurring roles. Thallon is currently best known in the theatre world and most recently starred in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 2025 Hamlet.

In June, a whole load of new additions were also announced to fill out supporting roles. Katherine Parkinson (Rivals) will play Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt (Lord of the Flies) will play Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn (Ripley) will play Lucius Malfoy and Bertie Carvel (The Crown) will play Cornelius Fudge.

Meanwhile, Leo Earley will play Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni will play Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah will play Lavender Brown, Bel Powley (Masters of the Air) will play Petunia Dursley and Daniel Rigby (I, Jack Wright) will play Vernon Dursley.

Unfortunately, those hoping for returns from the film franchise’s stars, such as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson or Rupert Grint, are out of luck – it’s not looking likely. Chatting to ComicBook.com, Radcliffe quashed any speculation about him making an appearance.

He said: “My understanding is that they’re trying to very much start fresh, and I’m sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere.”

He continued: “So I’m definitely not seeking it out in any way… but I do wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world, and I’m very excited to have that torch passed. But I don’t think it needs me to physically pass it.”

Argus Filch star David Bradley told RadioTimes.com: “I think it’ll be very interesting to see what they will do with the extra time they’ll have to film more of the books than we could.

“The Goblet of Fire and the last two, they were quite chunky – how do you condense those into a two and a half hour film?

“Of course, you’ve got to sacrifice quite a lot of plot and characters. I’m assuming the reason they’re doing it is they’ll be able to include more of the story because they’ll have more screen time – a lot more than the films had. I’ll be interested. I haven’t had the call yet!”

Asked whether it felt strange to see a new adaptation in the works, Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy, mused: “It’s no weirder for me than for everybody else who’s seen the films. I happen to be in the films too.”

He continued: “They make a new Spider-Man every 15 minutes. You know, there was a ton of stuff in the books that we left out. Yeah, it’s an odd feeling, but it’s no odder for me than it is anyone else. I can’t wait to see them and see what they do.”

Behind the camera, we know that His Dark Materials writer Francesca Gardiner will serve as showrunner, while Succession director Mark Mylod is attached to produce and film some episodes.

Meanwhile, JK Rowling will executive produce the series, alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts.

“Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series,” said Rowling.

Who is playing Voldemort in the Harry Potter series?

The actor who will be playing Voldemort in the Harry Potter HBO series hasn’t been revealed just yet, but well-known contenders like Matthew Macfadyen, Matt Smith, Paul Bettany, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Hiddleston are in the running, according to Online Betting Guide.

However, known entertainment industry leaker Daniel Richtman recently posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the Harry Potter TV show is “auditioning both men and women for Voldemort”, so there is a chance Tom Riddle could be portrayed by a female.

There is no confirmation of either claim yet, but we will be updating this guide as soon as we hear more.

What is the Harry Potter TV series about?

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

The series will be based on all seven books in the series, originally published between 1997 and 2007.

A statement from the newly branded Max explained: “The stories from each of Rowling’s Harry Potter books will become a decade-long series produced with the same epic craft, love and care this global franchise is known for.

“The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years.”

It continued: “Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

The Harry Potter series will stream on HBO Max.

Jessie Cave dropped from Harry Potter fan convention due to OnlyFans account

by jummy84 September 22, 2025

by Feeds-Bang |

22 September 2025

Jessie Cave has claimed she was barred from a Harry Potter fan convention because of her OnlyFans account.

Jessie Cave was banned form a Harry Potter convention

The 38-year-old actress – who played Lavender Brown in the final three films of the wizarding series – joined the subscription site in March but found it “baffling” to be shunned from the event as a result because she insisted her content on the adults-only platform is not sexual yet actors who have filmed explicit scenes are still welcome.

She wrote on her Substack: “I found out that I didn’t get booked for a Harry Potter convention recently, as I’m now doing OnlyFans.

“They explained it was because it’s a ‘family show and OnlyFans is affiliated with porn.’ This was baffling to me as some actors who do conventions (most actors, actually) have done TV and films in which they’ve done sex scenes and nudity. I’m just playing with my hair!”

While Jessie fears she has been “cancelled” from the Harry Potter fandom, she isn’t too upset because it is a “different time” and she’s ready to hand over the baton to a new generation, including Sienna Moosah, who will play Lavender in the upcoming HBO TV series.

She said: “I am not upset about the prospect of no more Harry Potter conventions.

“There’s going to be a new cast now, and it’s a different time. Plus, I have done conventions for over 15 years and have enough photos and wizard memorabilia.

“Excessively quirky one woman shows with puppets aren’t that lucrative, and some years, the money I got from signing photos of my face was the only real money I made. I am very lucky I got to do them. It’s time to move on and play some new characters.”

The Great Expectations actress – who has four children with partner Alfie Brown – announced in March she was launching a page on OnlyFans which would offer “the best quality hair sounds” and “very sensual stuff.”

But she later stressed that her account was “not a sexual one” on her Before we Break Up Again podcast, noting that although it appeals to those with hair fetishes, “fetish doesn’t necessarily mean sexual.”

Kit Harington and Keira Knightley have been cast in the new Harry Potter audiobook series.

Keira Knightley has joined the cast of the new Harry Potter audiobooks

The Game of Thrones actor and Black Doves actress are among the 10 new stars lending their voices to the Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions.

Kit will voice Professor Lockhart with Keira taking on the role of Professor Umbridge in the upcoming Pottermore Publishing and Audible project.

Game of Thrones’ Iwan Rheon and Gemma Whelan will voice Professor Lupin and Professor Sprout respectively, with Ruth Wilson joining as Bellatrix Lestrange, Ambika Mod playing Nymphadora Tonks, and Leo Woodall as Bill Weasley.

James McAvoy has also joined as Mad-Eye Moody, while Matt Berry will voice Sir Cadogan.

For the new audiobooks, Arthur Weasley will be played by Simon Pegg, whose Hot Fuzz co-star Nick Frost is portraying Rubeus Hagrid in HBO’s separate TV revival of the wizarding franchise.

Casting for a number of key roles already been confirmed for the audiobooks.

For the first three books – The Philosopher’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban – Frankie Treadaway, Max Lester and Arabella Stanton will voice Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger respectively.

Arabella has also been cast as Hermione in HBO’s reboot, alongside Dominic McLaughlin (Harry) and Alastair Stout (Ron).

For the final four audiobooks – Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince and the Deathly Hallows – Frankie, Max and Lester will be replaced by Jaxon Knopf, Rhys Mulligan and Nina Barker-Francis.

Elsewhere in the Full-Cast Audio Editions, Cush Jumbo will narrate, with Hugh Laurie (Albus Dumbledore), Matthew Macfadyen (Lord Voldemort), Riz Ahmed (Professor Snape), Michelle Gomez (Professor McGonagall) and Mark Addy (Hagrid).

The cast so far is rounded off by Alex Hassell as Lucius Malfoy, Daniel Mays as Dobby, and Sara and Anvi Deshmukh as the Patil twins.

The audiobooks are separate from HBO’s series, and Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner recently offered a word of warning for Dominic, Alastair and Arabella about life as a child star.

She told Flaunt magazine: “I look at the kids who are about to be in the new Harry Potter and I just want to give them a hug and say, ‘Look, it’s going to be okay but don’t go anywhere near [social media].

“’Stay friends with your home friends, keep living at home with your family, make sure your parents are your chaperones — it’s so important to have that grounding adjacent to the big, crazy stuff that you do.’”

Oscar-Winning Harry Potter Production Designer

by jummy84 September 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Stuart Craig, a UK production designer and art director who won Oscars for his work on The English Patient, Dangerous Liaisons and Gandhi, died September 7. He was 83.

Craig’s passing was confirmed via the British Film Designers Guild, which posted a message from BFDG member Neil Lamont on Facebook.

“It is with great sadness that I report that my friend and mentor, Production Designer Stuart Craig, passed away last night, 7th September 2025 aged 83, following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease,” wrote Lamont. “Stuart was the UK’s and, most probably, cinemas most-revered film designer … a true giant!”

Craig’s early credits include The Elephant Man, Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, Cry Freedom, Chaplin and The Secret Garden. He won his first Oscar in 1983 for Gandhi, and his second in 1989 for Dangerous Liaisons.

In 1997, he won his third Oscar for The English Patient, where he met Lamont.

DEADLINE RELATED VIDEO:

“Stuart and I first worked together on The English Patient, flying to Tunis to join him was one of the most important days of my career,” he wrote. “Straight out of the airport, on a recce of a local derelict, ruined building, 40 degrees, nervous, and I probably did one of the poorest surveys ever on a location. It turned out that we, subsequently, found better places. The experiences I had on this film, not only allowed me to see Stuart’s talent, his beautiful sketches, pencil drawings and vision, but also the way which he conducted himself in all walks of life, in the studio, the car, restaurants. A true gentleman, with grace, kindness and humility.”

Craig would go on to serve as production designer on all of the Harry Potter films and the Fantastic Beasts trilogy.

“I bet that anyone you ask, ‘which designer would you like to work with the most,’ the answer 100% would be Stuart Craig,” wrote Lamont. “Anyone who met him will remember their encounter forever.”

13 ways the Harry Potter TV series could be salvaged – Peeves to Voldemort’s death

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Rowling has faced backlash in some quarters due to her views on transgender rights. In 2020, she published a lengthy statement detailing her stance on sex and gender debates – the essay was criticised and disputed by LGBTQ+ charities including Stonewall.

Rowling has also shared her views on social media, including in a 2024 post on X (formerly Twitter), in which she insisted that “there are no trans kids” and opposed the idea that a child can be “born in the wrong body”.

In May 2025, Rowling set up the JK Rowling Women’s Fund, which describes itself as offering legal funding support to “individuals and organisations fighting to retain women’s sex-based rights”.

The Harry Potter books have also already been adapted into a massively successful film franchise – and not even that long ago.

But, for all our cynicism, the recent announcement that Professor Binns will appear in the series has proven it can at least offer something the films never did – enough time for an in-depth adaptation of the books.

After all, the plan is to dedicate a full season of the TV show to each book, allowing around an extra eight hours per book to add back in back stories, scrapped characters, and moments that the films just did not do justice.

So, while not everyone is happy about the TV series at all, if it does have to happen, there may be a few ways it can be salvaged for those who make the decision to watch it. Here’s how.

1. Add Peeves back in

It’s the obvious answer for a reason. Peeves was a hugely important character in the Harry Potter books who was unceremoniously cut from the films due to a lack of technology at the time.

Comedian and actor Rik Mayall was lined up to play the mischievous poltergeist who’s at the heart of every bit of chaos at Hogwarts, but the original film’s director Chris Columbus has revealed that his scenes had to be scrapped as no one was happy with how Peeves looked.

Peeves was behind some of the funniest moments in the Potter books, and some of the most memorable – including helping Fred and George Weasley’s exit from Hogwarts in the Order of the Phoenix.

Of course, Mayall sadly died in 2014, meaning another actor would have to step in as Peeves. But now, with time to spare and all the technology available to studios, there’s no excuse for not bringing him back.

2. Give Ginny a personality

Ginny Weasley was one of the films’ biggest failures. Book Ginny was funny, clever, feisty, and an absolute quidditch pro.

Film Ginny (played by Bonnie Wright, who should bear none of the blame since she was working with the material she was given) encapsulated very little of this – and it had a huge impact on the films as a whole.

Her entire relationship with Harry made little to no sense, with a complete lack of chemistry in the films, whereas the books show a gradual and very organic relationship growing between the pair as they grow up.

Plus, her dynamic with the rest of her family suffered. As the only Weasley daughter, Book Ginny completely held her own with her brothers, inheriting Fred and George’s mischievous spark. If it has any chance of succeeding, the series needs to get this right.

3. Spend some time with SPEW

Justice for the House Elves! One of the most memorable and important storylines for Hermione throughout the books was her concern for House Elf rights, which led to the founding of the one-woman Society for the Prevention of Elfish Welfare (SPEW).

Despite the limited success of SPEW, its omission from the films also meant we spent limited time with House Elves that weren’t Dobby.

The Black family’s House Elf Kreacher, for instance, only appeared in a few scenes, and Barty Crouch’s House Elf, Winky, who provided a completely different perspective to Dobby, was cut out of the films entirely.

Reinstating SPEW into the series would go some way to remedy this, and to expand on a huge part of Hermione’s character – her sense of morality and justice, and staying true to what she believes in, even in the face of ridicule.

4. Give us more of Neville’s backstory

Matthew Lewis as Neville Longbottom in Harry Potter

Neville was another character a little hard done by in the films. Despite being played brilliantly by Matthew Lewis, a few key parts of his story were either left out completely, or not explored in as much depth as they should have been.

The most prominent one was his parents, Frank and Alice, who were tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange.

A heartbreaking moment from the books sees Harry and his friends visiting St Mungo’s Hospital, where they encounter Neville visiting his parents and realise a little of what he’s been going through. It’s a huge part of what builds Neville into the character he becomes in Deathly Hallows.

Another plot line that was dropped in the movies was the possibility of Neville being the Chosen One, fitting the prophecy of the child being born in July to parents that had defeated Voldemort three times.

5. Actually cast Charlie Weasley

Despite having a pretty big role in the books, Charlie Weasley never actually appeared in the film series – apart from in a brief shot of a Weasley family photo.

The second-oldest Weasley brother is known for his love of dragons, as well as his quidditch prowess. While he’s located in Romania for much of the story, whenever there’s a dragon about, Charlie’s the one to call.

He could feature from the first season onwards, due to the arrival of Norbert, the young Norwegian Ridgeback that Hagrid hatches in his hut in Harry’s first year at Hogwarts.

6. No cringey cameos

With the confirmation that Warwick Davis will reprise his role as Professor Filius Flitwick, it feels a little like the floodgates are about to open for cameos from the original cast – but this would be a huge mistake.

If it has any chance of succeeding, the series has to feel original, and seeing Tom Felton play Lucius Malfoy, for instance, would feel incredibly jarring.

The option was there to make a sequel, prequel or spin-off – but if this is a remake, then let’s stick to that.

7. Some original visuals

Speaking of originality…

As original director Columbus pointed out, it was incredibly disheartening to see portraits of Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid in a costume that looks almost identical to the one designed for Robbie Coltrane in the original films.

The TV series is a chance to reimagine the books and if they end up being a shot-for-shot remake of the films, there’s simply no point.

Of course, some elements of the series may be a little hard to change – Harry’s appearance, for example. But there’s also a huge opportunity to reimagine plenty of the visuals, giving it a different tone and a feel to the films, which would work to justify the choice to remake them in the first place.

8. Character building – and comedy

Luke Youngblood as Lee Jordan in Harry Potter

More generally, the films don’t have the luxury of building out the characters as much as the books do – or including much of the comedy that’s included in them, from Fred and George’s constant antics to Mr Weasley’s obsession with muggles, from Lee Jordan’s quidditch commentary, to McGonagall’s sass.

With any luck, there’ll be plenty of different perspectives in the series, helping us to gain more of an insight into the characters that were a little abandoned in the films, including other students attending Hogwarts alongside Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

9. Don’t miss out The Marauders

James and Lily Potter in the Harry Potter films

On the topic of important book characters that didn’t quite make the cut in the films, surely a large amount of time will have to be dedicated to the Marauders.

In fact, it could be argued that a Marauders prequel series could have actually made more sense than a straight Harry Potter remake – at least it would have given us something new.

However, fans of the big four, James Potter, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew, may have to settle for seeing some flashbacks as part of the main series.

The Marauders were a huge part of the Potter books and inextricably linked to so many events in the main series that the TV version surely will have to do them justice.

10. Let us see more lessons

It’s not always essential for us to see the ins and outs of a potions lesson or a charms class, but part of the magic of Hogwarts was in fact the stuff that the students would have found pretty boring.

The films do strike a balance of showing us the events of lessons that are important to the plot (who could forget Lupin’s “Riddikulus” Boggart lesson?) but the series will presumably have the luxury of doing this more often. Plus, as the students grow older, their exams provide a crucial backdrop to life at Hogwarts.

11. Do right by Dumbledore’s funeral

Dumbledore’s death in The Half-Blood Prince was a devastating event that rocked the entire Wizarding World. Of course, in the films, it’s given its moment – but Dumbledore’s funeral was never seen on screen (although concept art of it was released).

The emotional event features wizards from across the country paying their respects in a scene that has the potential to be incredibly cinematic if it is featured on screen in the series.

12. Include Voldemort’s backstory

We saw plenty of Voldemort/Tom Riddle in the Potter films, but there was still a big element of his character that was cut out completely – his ancestry.

We discover that Voldemort is a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin, but was left unaware of the Wizarding World or his heritage after being born in an orphanage.

Throughout his teenage years, he learns more about his family – and becomes obsessed with the idea of “pure-blood supremacy”, laying the foundation for the monster he would become.

13. Make sense of Voldemort’s death

Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort in Harry Potter

One of the biggest failures of the entire Potter film series came at the very end – when we finally witness Voldemort’s death. In fact, it sort of misses the point completely.

After the destruction of the horcruxes, it becomes possible to kill the wizard that has haunted nightmares for decades.

Finally, Harry defeats him and, as he dies, Voldemort simply falls to the ground as any other mortal human would – proving that he’s not going to slip away into the night, or be resurrected somehow as he has been time and time again. It finally provides some closure.

In the final film, that detail is lost as we see Voldemort’s body shredded into pieces after Harry defeats him. It suggests that Voldemort had lost every part of his humanity and overlooks the book’s point that, in the end, he too was just a man.

The Harry Potter series will stream on HBO Max in 2027.
