Billboard Global Power Players Interview

by jummy84 November 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Billboard honors leaders driving the success of the music business outside the U.S. through its Billboard Global Power Players list. Among the industry figures recognized this year is Taeko Saito, Senior VP of business development and strategies, Asia Pacific at EMPIRE, marking her first appearance on the list. To commemorate the achievement, Billboard Japan spoke with Saito about EMPIRE’s business strategy, the growth of streaming markets across different countries, and the challenges facing Japan’s music industry today.

Could you tell us a bit about your background?

Taeko Saito: I spent most of my childhood in the U.S., and after graduating from university, I began my career as an assistant at AAM, a music producer management company. I later joined the publishing company SONGS Music Publishing as an A&R, where I handled deals with artists like Diplo, Lorde, and The Weeknd. After that, I moved to Downtown Music Publishing, where I helped establish its Japan office, and since 2023, I’ve been working at EMPIRE.

Tell us about EMPIRE’s business operations.

EMPIRE was founded in 2010 as a music distribution company. At the time, there were very few distributors specializing in specific genres, but we focused on hip-hop from the start. From there, the company expanded into label and publishing operations, leading to where we are today.

What led EMPIRE to focus on hip-hop?

It comes from a desire to share music from underrepresented communities with the world. Our CEO, Ghazi (Shami), comes from an immigrant background, which may have influenced that vision. He grew up in San Francisco surrounded by street culture, so in many ways, the focus on hip-hop was a natural extension of that. These days, though, we’re not limited to hip-hop — we’ve expanded into regions like Africa and Asia. One of the fastest-rising artists on our roster right now is Shaboozey, a Black country artist.

With streaming now the dominant form of music consumption, artists no longer need to be signed to a record label to release their work. They can do everything independently, though many still don’t fully understand the options available to them or the finer details of how to navigate that process. That’s where we come in: we offer independent artists a range of contract structures and opportunities tailored to their needs. Our goal is to show that there’s more than one way to succeed, and that artists can take flight in ways beyond the traditional system.

Your work focuses on the Asia-Pacific region, is that right?

Yes, mainly Asia. Aside from myself, we have staff based in Singapore and Indonesia, and we work closely together. Also, EMPIRE’s workforce is culturally diverse, with people from many different countries. This mix of cultures makes it reassuring to have headquarters collaborating with us as part of the same team.

The streaming market is slowing but still growing, with particular attention on Asia, Africa, and South America. How does EMPIRE view this situation?

Expectations for growth in Asia are very high. For example, a recent deal I handled was with a label in Cambodia. Spotify only became available there four years ago, in 2021.

That’s quite recent.

Yes. The music business there is still very young. Among the labels we’ve signed, the most successful artist is VannDa, whose videos have racked up hundreds of millions of views on YouTube and who’s seen remarkable growth just over the past year. Countries like Myanmar and Laos also have predominantly young populations, which makes them especially eager to embrace new services.

That said, there are still challenges on the business side in that royalty rates remain low. Japan has the highest rates in Asia, but in other countries, they’re significantly lower compared to regions outside Asia. It’s a complex issue that involves negotiations between nations, but I believe continued dialogue will help drive further growth.

Japan is often seen as a rare example of a country where CD sales and streaming coexist in its music market. What are your thoughts on this situation?

I think it’s wonderful how Japanese artists place such great importance on quality and on treating each fan with genuine care. However, I’m not sure the same approach would necessarily be accepted in the U.S. in exactly the same way. There are cultural differences and what people embrace or don’t, what they find easy or difficult to digest. That’s why I feel the way music is presented varies greatly from country to country.

I also think that what “success” means can differ from artist to artist. For example, say an artist wants to go global and win a Grammy. But is the goal simply to win a Grammy, or to earn the recognition of the Recording Academy members and to have them feel that this artist deserves a Grammy? Those may sound similar, but the narratives are very different.

And if the goal is to top the Billboard charts, that’s another story altogether. Grammy-nominated artists or works aren’t always those with the greatest commercial success — cultural impact, musicality, and message often carry more weight. So sometimes, winning a Grammy and achieving commercial success don’t necessarily go hand in hand.

So in terms of differences between Japan and other countries, I think the definition of success itself is different. In Japan, there’s a strong focus on nurturing lifelong bonds with each fan — the kind of fan who will buy CDs and cherish that artist for years. The approach is completely different overseas, and I think that gap is part of why the two worlds haven’t always connected. Still, many have continued to take on new challenges, and with the precedent set by K-pop, there’s now a growing sense of optimism across Japan’s music industry. I think what’s most important going forward is to stay adaptable and keep pushing forward with that spirit of challenge.

Have you noticed any major changes in the U.S. music scene over the past ten to twenty years?

The biggest shift has been in the independent music scene. Twenty years ago, “independent label” mostly brought to mind alternative bands, but now artists of all kinds own their rights and release their music on their own. Seeing that change makes me think Japan can move in the same direction. For idol groups and similar acts, where producers lead the projects, it’s natural for those producers to claim ownership of the rights. But for singer-songwriters, bands, or rappers who write their own material, I’m not sure that same structure always fits. Some artists may thrive under that traditional setup, while others might prefer to manage their own work and release independently. I believe that the latter market will only continue to grow, and when that happens, it’ll be crucial for major labels and agencies to adapt accordingly.

When you look at organic reactions online, you often see artists who go viral once but fade quickly afterward. In those moments, what really matters is an artist’s ability to build their brand and develop a lasting fan base. Today’s younger audiences move fast and shift to the next trend almost instantly. In that kind of environment, understanding what makes an artist someone you want to keep following is where labels and management teams can really make a difference.

And because artists now have the right to choose their own path, I want them to think carefully about what approach best suits them. When I sign an artist, I always make it clear that EMPIRE isn’t a one-size-fits-all label. The artists we work with are business owners in their own right — people who can think about how to evolve and expand their own ventures. Only a small number of artists are truly the right fit for EMPIRE, but for those who are, we’re confident we can help them grow more than anywhere else.

Are there any Japanese artists currently signed to EMPIRE?

Yes, we recently signed an artist named Litty. She only began releasing music last year, so she’s been active for about a year now. She also took part in a songwriting camp we hosted recently, where she collaborated with overseas artists for the first time. She absorbed everything like a sponge, and it was inspiring to see.

Billboard recently launched in Africa, signaling growing global attention on music scenes outside the West. What are your thoughts on that trend?

It’s hard to say definitively why African music has become so deeply rooted in the U.S., but I think part of it comes from a desire within the Black community to reconnect with their roots. Looking at trending charts, there are moments when I sense a similar response among Asian listeners in America — almost as if they’re reacting to how Asian artists haven’t always been fully recognized in the past. Seeing the global success of artists who weren’t traditionally part of the mainstream, especially in K-pop, feels like a reflection of more people embracing their own roots and identities.

The U.S. is the world’s largest music market and a multicultural nation. Do you think it’s because of that diversity that music from so many different countries is being heard there and spreading globally through social media and streaming?

Exactly. The music industry is undergoing a fascinating transformation right now. Music is being heard across borders more than ever, and listeners have become increasingly open to that diversity. For us, Asia still has so much untapped potential. Going forward, we want to build on EMPIRE’s strengths while exploring how best to adapt them to each country’s unique landscape.

Learn About the MLB Player’s Marriage – Hollywood Life

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ star player Shohei Ohtani has taken on another, equally important role — that of a father! The 30-year-old baseball sensation and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka made the big announcement via Instagram on December 28, 2024. “Can’t wait for the little rookie to join our family soon!” he proudly captioned the post, alongside a photo of their dog Dekopin, a set of pink ruffled baby pajamas, and an ultrasound photo covered by a baby-face emoji. Dekopin, otherwise known as “Decoy,” appeared to be taking the news in stride, laying back with his legs in the air for the sweet snapshot. Shohei and Mamiko welcomed their child, a baby girl, in April 2025.

Ahead of the arrival, here’s what you should about Shohei Ohtani’s wife Mamiko Tanaka and their life together as a married couple.

Who is Shohei Ohtani’s Wife?

According to People, Mamiko Tanaka, 28, is a former pro Japanese basketball player. Per the outlet, early in her career, Tanaka played for Waseeda University. She went on to play professional basketball in 2019, joining the Fujitsu Red Wave of the Women’s Japan Basketball League. She stands tall and graceful at 5’11,” and her career as a pro basketball player spanned four years before she retired in 2023. Perhaps most importantly, she’s proven that Ohtani is not the only talented athlete in the family.

How Long Has Shoehei Ohtani Been Married?

Without naming the date or the bride, Ohtani announced his marriage in a February 29, 2024 Instagram post. “To all my friends and fans throughout, I have an announcement to make: Not only have I began a new chapter in my career with the Dodgers but I also have began a new life with someone from my Native country of Japan who is very special to me and I wanted everyone to know I am now married,” he wrote. “I am excited for what is to come and thank you for your support.” An adorable snap of Dekopin in the corner of the announcement punctuated the good news.

Two weeks later, Ohtani and Tanaka posed with his new wife as they prepared to board a plane to Seoul, South Korea. The Dodgers were on their way to play there, and the team ultimately made the big reveal with a shot on Twitter of Ohtani and Tanaka, as well as a separate photo of Mookie Betts and wife Brianna Hammonds. “Wheels up to Seoul,” the team captioned the post.

Beyond his couple of big announcements, Ohtani has kept his personal life with Tanaka private — the baseball star has shared very little information about his daily life with Tanaka on social media.

Does Shohei Ohtani Have Kids?

In April 2025, Ohtani announced via Instagram that his wife had given birth to a daughter. “I am so grateful to my loving wife who gave birth to our healthy beautiful daughter,” he captioned his post. “To my daughter, thank you for making us very nervous yet super anxious parents.”

According to The Los Angeles Times, Ohtani’s reveal comes amid a year of change, including switching teams from the Angels to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He signed a $700 million contract with the legendary team in December of 2023. He then led the team to its eighth world series title in November of 2024.

Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes Football’s First Billionaire: Who’s Next On The Richest Players List? | Glamsham.com

by jummy84 October 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Cristiano Ronaldo just crossed a huge line, he’s now officially the first footballer ever to reach billionaire status, with estimates placing his net worth at around $1.4 billion.  That’s not just from goals and trophies though it’s from massive contracts, brand deals, smart business moves, and a global brand empire.

A big chunk of his wealth now comes from his Saudi club contract, which is said to be worth over $400 million.  Add to that years of endorsement deals with Nike, Armani, and others, real estate, hotels, perfumes, and more, Ronaldo’s earnings span way beyond the pitch.

Before this, most public sources estimated Ronaldo’s net worth in 2025 somewhere between $275 million and $600 million, depending on what you count (salary, endorsements, assets).  But with this new milestone, those older numbers look modest in comparison.

So who’s behind him now? Here are some names frequently mentioned, along with their rough net worths:

  • Lionel Messi: Often considered Ronaldo’s peer in both football and finances, Messi’s fortune is estimated around $580 million in some sources  .
  • Neymar Jr.: A top earner from both salary and endorsements, Neymar is often listed in the top 5 richest players.
  • Kylian Mbappé: Young, marketable, and already stacking big contracts and brand deals.
  • Faiq Bolkiah: He’s often listed as the richest footballer if you include inherited wealth. Some say his net worth is in the billions, though not from football itself.

These numbers are noisy. They depend on what you include (investments, private assets, debts). But Ronaldo’s jump to billionaire status changes the conversation. He’s not just a player anymore, he’s a business mogul, a brand, a legacy.

The question now: who’ll be the next footballer to break into the billion-dollar club? Messi? Mbappé? A royal heir playing on the side? Watch this space.

Kyren Lacy, a skilled football wide receiver who played for Louisiana State University, has died. A family member and an LSU official confirmed the news on April 13, 2025, according to multiple outlets. Lacy was reportedly found dead on April 12 in Houston, Texas, one day before a grand jury was scheduled to review evidence related to Lacy’s previous hit-and-run arrest. Below, learn what happened to Lacy as updates emerge about his case.

Who Was Kyren Lacy?

Lacy was an LSU football wide receiver, who was declaring for the 2025 NFL draft. He played three seasons for LSU and had his best season in 2024.

Kyren Lacy’s Age

Lacy was 24 years old when he died, according to ESPN.

How Did Kyren Lacy Die? His Cause of Death

While a family member and an LSU spokesperson confirmed the news of his death, Lacy’s cause of death was not publicly disclosed. It was later revealed that Lacy died by suicide.

What Happened to Kyren Lacy? His Car Accident Explained

Earlier this year, Lacy ran into legal trouble. According to ESPN, he was accused of being involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 78-year-old man on December 17, 2024. Lacy turned himself into the authorities on January 12, 2025, was in jail for a brief time, then was released on a $151,000 bail.

A Louisiana State Police press release indicated that Lacy was allegedly driving a 2023 Dodge Charger vehicle on Highway 20 and “recklessly passed multiple vehicles at a high rate of speed by crossing the centerline and entering the northbound lane while in a designated no-passing zone.”

“As Lacy was illegally passing the other vehicles, the driver of a northbound pickup truck abruptly braked and swerved to the right to avoid a head-on collision with the approaching Dodge,” the police release read. “Traveling behind the pickup was a 2017 Kia Cadenza whose driver swerved left to avoid the oncoming Dodge Charger. As the Kia Cadenza took evasive action to avoid impact with the Dodge, it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound 2017 Kia Sorento.”

Louisiana State Police further alleged that Lacy drove around the crash site, then fled “without stopping to render aid, call emergency services, or report his involvement in the crash.” Lacy’s agent, Rocky Arceneaux, said that his client was “fully cooperating with the authorities,” per ESPN.

If you or someone you know is in emotional distress or considering suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Cardi B And More Honored At 2025 Billboard R&B Hip-Hop Power Players

by jummy84 September 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Cardi B accepted the Impact Of The Year Award from Billboard’s Senior Director of R&B/Hip-Hop Carl Lamarre at Billboard’s R&B Hip-Hop Power Players 2025 event in New York City Thursday (Sept. 5). Her acceptance speech found her reminiscing on the influential women she aspired to be like as a young artist, as well as her desire to leave a lasting legacy.

“Hip-hop is a feeling. When I was growing up, I didn’t want to be the Shakiras, the J-Los, and the R&B artists; I wanted to be like Trina and Lil Kim. I wanted to be like them,” Cardi said. “I’m just so happy that I’m a part of something that I love. I always dreamed about this career — I just felt like with the environment that I was in, dreaming was dreaming. Reality crushes your dreams. So I’m happy that my career is the career that I always dreamed of.

“I want to be spoken about forever. We talk about all these hip-hop artists who came out 20 years ago and 30 years ago, and I want to be a part of that. I don’t want to be a moment. I want to be a legacy so I can die in peace one day and my kids can be like, ‘That’s my mama.’”

Other honorees included The Wu-Tang Clan, who accepted the Hip Hop Hall of Fame Award, and Leon Thomas, who took home the Breakthrough of the Year Award.

The event was held in concert with the release of Billboard’s annual R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players list, honoring executives throughout both genres, including Executive of the Year, TDE’s Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith.

Leon Thomas, GELO Perform at Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players Show

When word got out that the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players event would be taking over Webster Hall for a free concert on Friday (Sept. 5), New Yorkers from all walks of life consumed three blocks waiting — and hoping — to get inside. Those lucky enough to gain entry celebrated every second of the night, as DJ Ohso meticulously spun through hip-hop bangers, sultry afro tunes and a little bit of Paramore to keep the crowd energized, engaged and hungry for a showcase from Billboard‘s Rookies of the Year.

Armanii kicked the night off with his signature blend of dancehall and hip-hop grooves, as fans swayed to “8:00 PM,” “JUMP (Bounce)” and others. Attendee’s workday blues than completely vanished thanks to Billboard‘s Hip-Hop Rookie of the Year GELO, who swaggered about the stage and ignited the party with the littest cuts off his debut album, League of My Own. While fans cheered and supported the newer tracks, it of course was his viral hit “Tweaker” that fully locked the crowd in with its unifying “woah’s” and “ahh’s.”

After a short breather, Odeal‘s presence was immediately felt throughout Webster’s Hall, as people erupted just at the mere sight of the African Rookie of the Year. There were dozens of diehard supporters in the audience, who screamed out every syllable of “Soh-Soh,” “London Summers” and of course “Miami,” with the soon-to-appear headliner Leon Thomas. Before that, though, Ravyn Lenae floated onto the stage to quickly transport the crowd to a more mystical realm. Lenae gracefully sang through her biggest hits including “One Wish” and “Love Me Not,” sprinkling pixie dust along the way like an R&B fairy godmother.

But it was Thomas that really brought the house down. He railed on the drums, shredded on the guitar, sang his absolute heart out — firing off every firearm in his musical arsenal and leaving no survivors. The crowd, admittedly a bit worn after such a lengthy showcase, rallied behind Thomas and fully came back to life as Ty Dolla $ign casually strutted out while singing his verse on “Far Fetched.” The DJ then queued up “Carnival” right after, the Ye (formerly Kanye West) and Ty’s Vultures 1 cut that hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart back in 2024. As Ty sang through the single and hyped up the crowd, Leon and his band — for lack of a better term — rocked the f—k out. Then, almost like a fever dream, the night was over, leaving the crowd sweaty and satisfied in every way.

NFL predictions: Ndamukong Suh picks Super Bowl contenders, dark horses, MVP and players to watch

Both the Eagles and Chiefs are among the teams expected to get back to the big game but who are the other sides to watch? Who will end the season as MVP? Which defensive and offensive players will stand out? And who are the dark horses?

To answer all those questions, RadioTimes.com sat down with NFL legend and Sky Sports pundit Ndamukong Suh to get his predictions for the season ahead.

Ndamukong Suh’s NFL 2025 predictions

Super Bowl contenders

“I think there are going to be a lot of teams that have an opportunity to win. I think the strongest conference will be the NFC but there are a couple of teams I think have an opportunity to get to the Super Bowl.

“I have to mention the Kansas City Chiefs. I would also say the Detroit Lions. I think the Washington Commanders as well. And of course, the Philadelphia Eagles seem like they’re rebuilding every single year to make that hard push to get into the Super Bowl.

“Those are my kind of top four teams as of right now that I think have a legit chance to get there as of right now.”

Dark horses

“I’ve just got a good feeling about my dark horses being the Chicago Bears. I think Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams are going to find a way to create havoc in that black and blue division of the NFC North.

“Ultimately, I mean, it’s fair game for anybody and everybody. Everybody is at 00:00 today. We’ll see after week one how things shape up but even then. I mean, it’s so early in the season. The season, honestly, hasn’t even started yet.”

MVP

“My MVP for this year is Lamar Jackson. And the reason I’m picking him is I believe he and the Baltimore Ravens understand this is kind of a ‘put up or shut up’ year.

“He’s going to have to have an MVP season to be able to dethrone the two nemeses of his career – Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs – to win that Conference (the AFC) and go from there.”

Defensive player to watch

“The player I’m most excited to watch outside of my defensive tackles? That would have to be Micah Parsons.

“I think as long as he stays healthy, you’re going to see a Green Bay Packers defence that is built around him to have success. I feel like they made that trade as their next version of Reggie White to come in and take them to a Super Bowl and have an opportunity to go and win it.”

Offensive player to watch

Saquon Barkley, in green and white NFL uniform, celebrates with his Philadelphia Eagles teammates in the end zone.

“The non-quarterback to stand out this year? It’s a tough one. I mean, I think my easy answer would be Saquon Barkley. I think he back doors his successful season.

“He may not have a record-breaking year, but he’s still going to be a massive force to be dealt with. He’s obviously the linchpin and cornerstone of the Philadelphia Eagles team and offence.”

‘Springsteen’ and ‘Ballad of a Small Player’ Are Oscar Players

Anyone who had doubts about “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White’s ability to carry a movie as the Boss can put them away. Scott Cooper’s “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” focuses on the period after Springsteen’s rise to fame in 1981 when he settles in a lakehouse in New Jersey to create the album “Nebraska,” laying down tracks by himself with new technology that was far from professional level.

The movie traces his fraught early years with his alcoholic father (Stephen Graham) and the counterbalancing gentle support coming from his manager Jon Landau (Jeremy Strong). The movie has some performances, but mostly Cooper and White are looking inside Springsteen, as he faces depression and fights for his album to be realized the way he hears it: Spare, intimate, echoey. He sets aside obvious hit tracks like “Born in the USA” and “Glory Days” for a later recording, the eventual album smash “Born in the USA.”

Who does that? Bruce. This movie could be a commercial success for Disney’s Twentieth Century Pictures, and proves that White is a star. Acting award nominations, certainly, are in the offing, as reviews are otherwise mixed.

Opening night also brought Edward Berger’s return to Telluride a year after “Conclave,” which went on to eight Oscar nominations and an adapted screenplay win. “Ballad of a Small Player,” adapted by Rowan Joffe from the Lawrence Osborne novel, is a meticulously mounted, gorgeous jewel of a movie set in the glittering gambling palaces of Macau. For all its showy camera moves, the movie centers on its tortured protagonist, a seedy gambling addict who is running out of time. Sporting a mustache, cravat, bright velvet jackets, and yellow gloves, Colin Farrell as con man “Lord Doyle” runs the gamut of sweaty emotions as he wins, loses, and faces desperate thoughts. The hotel is chasing him for his bill, and a private detective (Tilda Swinton) is chasing him for stealing money from a wealthy old woman. How far will his addiction take him?

Farrell could win some support from the Academy actors branch for taking on this moral steeplechase where the outcome is far from clear. We root for him to find his way, as the exit door gets smaller and smaller. Netflix is pushing the film for awards.

Next up: Chloe Zhao’s “Hamnet” screens Saturday as well as the first arrival from Venice, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia.”
