Norman Cook planned to become a firefighter before Fatboy Slim success

Norman Cook contemplated becoming a fireman when he came close to bankruptcy in the early ‘90s.

Before finding fame and success as DJ Fatboy Slim, the 62-year-old producer’s music career was floundering after his collective Beats International’s second album, 1991’s Excursion on the Version, was a commercial failure.

Cook – who had achieved a number one single, Dub Be Good To Me, with Beats International in January 1990 – was broke and ready to walk away from the music business to take up fire-fighting, but an unexpected windfall prevented him from going bankrupt.

Speaking at the launch of his new book It Ain’t Over… ‘Til The Fatboy Sings, as reported by website Contact Music, he said: “During the 40 years there’s been downs as well as ups. There’s been times when I’ve suffered with crippling anxiety and depression, just as a human being.

“There’s been times when I’ve been so close to bankruptcy that my accountant is saying, ‘I think you should declare bankruptcy that way you can keep your house.’

“My wife said, ‘You know, you ever thought about getting a proper job?’

“There was time between Beats International and Freak Power where I didn’t earn anything for about a year. I had a huge tax bill that I couldn’t pay. I got a PPL cheque which cleared off the debt and I lived to fight another day and then Freak Power happened.

“I actually had started finding out what was required to become a fireman, because my wife told me to get a proper job and earn some money.

“So it’s not always been successful. Everybody has bad days, it’s not all been clear.”

Cook – who was previously married to BBC Radio Two presenter Zoe Ball – insists his reinvention as a big beats pioneer was never intentional, as he didn’t have the foresight of an artist like David Bowie to plan his career.

He said: “The thing is, a few people when you’re talking go, ‘You reinvented yourself so many times.’ It was never, like, a conscious thing that I planned. What would happen is the band I was in was falling to bits and hating each other so I had to do something else.

“If you imagine like David Bowie, or somebody, he knows what he’s doing and he sees things on the horizon and thinks, ‘I’m going to do that, and next year I’m going to do that.’

“I never did that. I basically just followed my nose like some kind of puppy.”

Cook’s debut book It Ain’t Over… ’Til the Fatboy Sings celebrates his 40 years in showbiz and is a vivid celebration of indie, house, acid and remix culture. It is out now.

Bonehead to take “planned break” from Oasis reunion tour as he shares cancer diagnosis

Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs has announced that he’ll be taking a “planned break” from Oasis‘ Live ’25 reunion tour to continue his cancer treatment, after sharing news of his recent diagnosis.

The guitarist was given the all-clear from tonsil cancer back in 2022, but has now shared that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year, and will be sitting out the band’s upcoming dates in Asia and Australia before rejoining them in South America so that he can have “the next phase of care”.

“Early this year I was diagnosed with prostate cancer,” said Bonehead in a statement. “The good news is I’m responding really well to treatment, which meant I could be part of this incredible tour. Now, I am having to take a planned break for the next phase of my care, so l’ll be missing the gigs in Seoul, Tokyo, Melbourne and Sydney.

“I’m really sad to be missing these shows but l’m feeling good and will be back ready to go in time for South America. Have an amazing time if you’re going this month and I’ll see you back onstage with the band in November.”

Oasis then shared the news along with their support, adding: “Wishing you all the best with your treatment, Bonehead – we’ll see back on stage in South America.”

Arthurs, the original and founding guitarist for Oasis before his exit in 1999, and later regularly playing with Liam Gallagher‘s solo band, has been commended for his role in the current reunion line-up for adding real heft and power to the sound.

Paying tribute to Bonehead on stage earlier this summer, Noel Gallagher said that he was responsible for Oasis’ return – telling the crowd in Cardiff: “If it wasn’t for him, none of this would have happened.”

Back in March, NME revealed that Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs would be part of the Oasis reunion, alongside Gem Archer, Andy Bell and Joey Waronker. Arthurs played with the band on their first three albums, before departing during the recording of ‘Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants’ (2000).

Oasis played their last scheduled UK dates at the weekend with two closing nights at Wembley Stadium, with Liam seemingly teasing the crowd about more shows to come. “See you next year,” he said. Yesterday (October 2) saw the band’s website crash due to demand after DJ Chris Evans told his radio listeners of “big news for 2026” coming that day, but it failed to materialise.

Fans have speculated that Oasis may celebrate the 30th anniversaries of their legendary Maine Road and Knebworth gigs by playing Etihad Stadium and Knebworth next year. However, no concerts have been confirmed yet – currently, the band have 13 dates remaining across Asia, Australia and South America.

The band also have a reunion film in the works, produced by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, alongside an ‘OASIS LIVE ’25 OPUS’ book featuring their reunion shoot and live tour photos.

Meanwhile, their 30th anniversary reissue of their seminal album ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’ was released today via Big Brother Recordings.

After much anticipation, Jr NTR debuted in Bollywood with the spy thriller War 2. The movie, helmed by Ayan Mukerji, boasted a stellar star cast including Hrithik Roshan and Kiara Advani in key roles. The film was released on August 14, just ahead of Independence Day, under the banner of YRF.

Jr NTR To Begin Shooting With Prashanth Neel, Devara 2

There were reports of NTR signing a multiple-film deal with the franchise that also included his solo hero film. However, as per reports, the actor was always supposed to begin his film with Prashanth Neel and Devara 2 after War 2, so this is not new. Therefore, we can confirm that there is no delay in YRF’s project with NTR because of these two films.

An independent industry source revealed, “Post War 2, Jr NTR was always supposed to start work on his next film with Prashanth Neel, followed by Devara 2, and the development remains the same. The team is gearing up, and the preparations are already underway.”

For the unversed, the title of Prashanth Neel’s film with NTR is tentatively Dragon. Talking about Devara, in the film, the actor starred alongside Janhvi Kapoor. And it hit the screens last year, in 2024.
