Pierre Robert was a legendary fan-favorite radio personality whose career with 93.3 WMMR in Philadelphia became one of the city’s most iconic stories. Born and raised in Northern California, Pierre began his broadcast path in San Francisco before making his cross-country move to Pennsylvania in 1981, where he landed his long-term deal with the station. Unfortunately, Pierre died in October 2025 at the age of 70.

Beasley Media Group, the parent company of WMMR, shared a statement confirming the news of Pierre’s death, calling him the “heart and soul” of the station.

“Pierre’s unwavering love for music and his deep connection with listeners made him one of radio’s most enduring and beloved voices,” Caroline Beasley, CEO of BMG, said. “He will be greatly missed.”

While his exact cause of death is still unclear, we’ve compiled everything we know about Pierre’s life and career below.

Pierre Robert Was From California

Though he was best known as Philadelphia’s fan-favorite radio host, Pierre was actually from California. Born in the town of Truckee, the West Coast native drove across the country to Pennsylvania while driving a friend. The rest is history, as he eventually became the on-air host of WMMR-FM in 1981.

What began as a temporary opportunity turned into a lifelong home for Pierre. He began by working odd jobs around the station before earning his spot on the airwaves, where his humor and voice established a long-lasting and unbreakable bond with listeners. His signature statement, “Greetings, citizens!” became a daily anthem for generations of radio fans before he died in 2025.

Pierre Started at a San Francisco Radio Station

As a California native, Pierre got his start in radio at a San Francisco station. He worked for 94.9 KSAN-FM, which was one of the country’s first progressive rock stations until it changed its tone into an Urban Country format. Pierre temporarily switched his on-air name to Will Robertson at 94.9.

Pierre Robert Was Found Dead at Home in 2025

The details of Pierre’s death are still unclear, but he was found dead at home on October 29, 2025. He was 70 years old.

Pierre Robert, the voice of Philadelphia rock radio for 44 years as a DJ on 93.3 WMMR, died Wednesday. His agent confirmed his death to Rolling Stone. Robert was 70.

On the air from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Monday through Friday, Robert — pronounced Ro-bear — was part of the fabric of Philadelphia. He was a colorful, ubiquitous figure, known for his long hair and gray beard and the welcoming way he saluted callers: “Great day in the morning!” His daily time on the air was punctuated by hearty laughs, self-deprecating jokes about his disregard for time (he was perpetually late, on “Pierre Standard Time”) and wafer-thin sports knowledge (to Robert, every Philly team was “the boys in blue”), and a playlist that, even in the era of corporate radio, took musical risks.

Born William Pierre Robert in California in 1955, he cut his teeth on a San Francisco progressive rock station before ultimately heading east. In 1981, he joined WMMR in Philadelphia, where he worked until his death. Robert, true to his roots, was a passionate fan of the Grateful Dead, but he was an especially unwavering champion of hometown bands in Philadelphia, New Jersey, and the surrounding area, regardless of their level of fame. His playlists included locally grown artists like Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Hall & Oates, the Hooters, and his beloved Beru Revue.

“He didn’t care if you were the fad or the fashion of the moment. He just cared,” Jon Bon Jovi wrote in tribute to Robert on Instagram.

“What made him so great is that he truly cared about the music,” the band the Offspring wrote about Robert on social media. “He was first and foremost a music fan, and his listeners knew it, because they saw him in the pit with them. Just as we were honored to see him in the pit at our shows.”

Along with his noon “workforce blocks” — a cluster of songs by the same artist — Robert also schooled listeners on rock & roll history, especially of the local kind, in his “On This Day” segment. Deep diving into the concert calendar, he’d list off who was playing where in Philly on that particular date. It was a way of preserving the past and honoring those who came before, a hallmark of Robert’s broadcasting style.

The centerpiece of Robert’s on-air year came every December, with his annual Christmas Eve show. It was an hours-long marathon of holiday songs, both traditional and rock-based, peppered with copious amounts of Christmas-themed audio snippets. Jackie Gleason’s monologue in the yuletide episode of The Honeymooners was played regularly, along with Cheech & Chong’s “Santa Clause and His Old Lady,” and a corny bit known to loyal listeners as “The Jaguar.”

The throughline for Robert, however, was yet again the local. He played Beru Revue’s live Christmas medley; Philly songwriter Alan Mann’s “Christmas on the Block,” about blind children who decorate their home; and a montage of heartwarming lyrics welcoming former Delaware Valley residents back home.

“His voice helped the hungry and the homeless, and he did it because he cared. About you, about me, about making the world a little kinder wonder filled place to live,” Bon Jovi wrote. “His memory will live with us as it will with all of the people he touched. That man is Pierre Robert. The legendary DJ.”

Aaron Pierre is Teyana Taylor‘s “prize” and “apple pie.”

The singer and star of One Battle After Another recently appeared on Sherri to discuss her leading man and leading role. Following her divorce from Iman Shumpert, Taylor gushed over her new love.

Host Sherri Shepherd teased, “Aaron Pierre was our fantasy,” and for Taylor, he was hers, too. “Luther said, ‘Never too much,’” she quipped about how well it’s going between them. She even broke out into song. “Never too much apple pie,” Taylor joked.

On a more serious note, the Escape Room singer confessed, “I feel good. It feels good to feel good.” Taylor then offered up some advice to single women on their own journey for love: “I think the most important thing is— no matter where you come from, whether it’s a heartbreak or whatever, I think the best thing is to be willing to love unarmored. If you’re willing to come with a wall built, it’ll block your blessings, and who that [new] person may not be what that [old] person was.”

Regarding her own path in love, Taylor shared, “I walk a straight line unarmored and I walk a straight line ready to receive whatever is mine to hold.”

Later in the segment, Shepherd asked Taylor about working with Leonardo DiCaprio, particularly for their steamy sex scenes. In regard to that, Taylor called it a “job.”

She laughed and said, “Babe, did you see my apple pie? My eyes is on my prize!” Shepherd praised Taylor’s loyalty to her man.

Taylor added, “When I step on set, I’m here to do a job. I’m a team player. We’re all players on this team and we’re here to win. We’re here to make magic. [It’s like] when the whistle blows, it’s time to get to work and I get to work. Then, I go my a** home.”

She noted that both she and Pierre are “very secure,” explaining, “When we know what the prize is, we’re not worried about if anybody is stepping outside of that prize tryna look for another one. We’re not worried about that. I have a very secure support system, and so does he, and I think that’s all it’s about. Understanding that this is work and this is love.”
