Pumpkin pie vs apple pie: Which one is healthier for blood sugar levels?

Pumpkin pie vs apple pie. The ultimate and age-old Thanksgiving dessert debate is unending. While individuals choose their side dishes based on taste and preferences, nutrition experts also have their own say in this. A recent article published by Health claimed that a person “watching their blood sugar should choose pumpkin pie over apple.”

Apple pie vs Pumpkin pie: Sugar levels

The article further noted that a typical slice of apple pie contains around 30 grams of natural and added sugar, and pumpkin pie is placed slightly lower at around 25 grams. Pumpkin pie is also lower in carbohydrates, which a person’s body breaks down into glucose.

Apple pie vs Pumpkin pie: The glycemic load

Sharon Palmer, MSFS, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist from California, told Health that the glycemic load – a measurement of how quickly and how much a food raises blood sugar- of both pies is considered to be medium. This means that even a slice of apple pie will have a moderate effect on blood sugar.

What about calories?

Apple pie typically contains more calories than pumpkin pie (397 versus 323 per slice). Also, pumpkin pie “provides more vitamins and minerals like vitamin A and potassium,” Jackie Topol, MS, RD, a registered dietitian specializing in prediabetes, told Health.

According to American Institute for Cancer Research, apple pie may contain from 300 to a little over 400 calories per slice, depending on the amount of fat and sugar added. A slice of pumpkin pie traditionally contains about 320 calories, but recipe adaptations like using evaporated skim milk can reduce fat from the usual 14 or 15 grams per slice, thus reducing calories, too.

As the holiday season is underway, families can maintain their health by choosing the option that is better for their bodies. Making your own dessert can also serve as a way to control calories and sugar intake.

Topol explained to Health that using spices like cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg can boost flavour naturally, reducing the need for artificial ingredients.

D’Angelo’s 2019 Documentary, ‘Devil’s Pie’: Review And Recap

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

In 2019, D’Angelo allowed fans an intimate look into his life — the indelible highs and complicated lows — through the lens of his documentary, Devil’s Pie.

Named after a record from his second album, Voodoo, the Carine Bijlsma-directed film is full of archival anecdotes and behind-the-scenes moments as he prepared for his return in tandem with the release of his 2014 album, Black Messiah — which was described on Letterboxd as the “soundtrack of the lost years.”

Throughout the 90-minute film, we unpack his choice to step out of the spotlight at the height of his career, his spiritual foundation, the distinction between Michael Archer and D’Angelo, and the layers of what entails being a “Black genius.”

The documentary isn’t currently available to stream, but there are links floating around social media. If you get the chance to view it, we implore that you do. However, VIBE breaks down the top three takeaways from Devil’s Pie below.

  • The Complexities Of A Black Genius

Within the first few minutes of the film, Questlove described D’Angelo as the “last pure singer on Earth,” but somberly added that the crooner “tends to hide.”

The doc labeled him “elusive,” saying in 2000, he was “poised for superstardom” — thanks to Voodoo. Then, he disappeared for over a decade. His then-tour manager, Alan “Pops” Leeds, faulted “the media” for “playing up” the crooner’s arrests and unfortunate 2005 car accident, which left him critically injured.

“Nothing beats D’Angelo. That gift only comes once in a blue moon,” said Questlove. He felt that D’Angelo battled with fears associated with being “the chosen one,” explaining that “To thine own self be true” was his mantra.

D’Angelo even discussed the internal struggle, noting that following one arrest, he was upset with himself because he could’ve been in the studio instead. “I was bulls**tting [but] I’m sitting here,” he stated.

In the third act of the documentary, he discussed the “power” of his music and referenced the quote: “With great power comes great responsibility.” He explained, “If Yahweh grants you that gift and you’re not being responsible about it, then it gets perverted and that can be very scary. That’s some place I don’t ever want to be.”

  • The “Untitled” Downfall

After the video for “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” was released, D’Angelo became an instant sex symbol. However, the burden of that ideal plagued him. He hated the sexualization of his image and was part of the reason why he proverbially shut down.

Questlove recalled during the Voodoo tour, they’d planned a “very meticulous two-and-a-half hour show,” but “18 minutes into it, women were screaming, ‘Take it off.’”

Leeds felt that the fantasy of D’Angelo grew bigger than the music, which frustrated the crooner. D’Angelo played Quest a “crude demo” of what became “1000 Deaths” off Black Messiah. Leeds feared that the downward spiral following the “Untitled” visual would have caused catastrophic results.

Questlove called D’Angelo “Superman, but he’s a kryptonite-filled Clark Kent trapped in his soul.”

During that time, however, the singer also was navigating grief. His uncle and grandmother passed and a close friend died by suicide. This was the catalyst to his substance abuse. He attempted rehab twice before it worked, detailing that working on music led to him getting clean.

He explained, “I was getting f**ked up and I never did that. I never got so f**ked up that I couldn’t make music, or that I was dysfunctional while I was in the studio […] The third rehab was when it really sunk into me that I had a problem and had to deal with it.”

  • D’Angelo Vs. Michael

There was a fine line toed between Michael Archer, the man, and D’Angelo, the musician. He reportedly “wrestled” with pursuing a career in “secular music” due to his religious upbringing. However, his grandmother was the person who inspired him to pursue what he loved— which was always music in whatever capacity.

During the documentary, his faith remained a constant fixture. “I trust in God. I trust in the spirit and the love that brought us together and in the gifts that God gave us. When we pray at night, it’s not a game and it’s very real. We walk out on faith. We got this far by faith and that’s how we walk out there and the way I feel, when I come out there and have that love, that spirit and that authority with me, it’s nothing that can stop us,” he said.

He reflected on the “high” he felt while being onstage, but once the show is over, “you go back and it’s just you again.” He even confessed that there isn’t much separating Michael from D’Angelo. “To actually leave [D’Angelo] there on the stage is kind of hard,” he expressed. “I think a lot of times, I’m too real for that s**t. So, I have to leave him there.” He felt bringing his persona into his personal life caused it to become “murky and cloudy.”

The crooner described the music industry as a “contact sport” and blamed the “business” for why many “didn’t make it.” There were even things about the business that he wouldn’t discuss because it was “deep s**t.”

For D’Angelo, it seemed his mission was having God live within him and freeing himself of the “distractions” that would take him away from that. Music was his gateway and purpose. The documentary ended with the singer listening to the gospel song, “Lord, Plant My Feet On Higher Ground” and confirmed that he was working on his fourth album.

bitchy | Eden: Duchess Meghan will visit the UK by the end of 2025, ‘bearing humble pie’

by jummy84 October 11, 2025
written by jummy84

This is the third week in a row in which the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden has devoted an entire column to one particular conspiracy theory. The conspiracy: the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are desperate to leave their palatial Montecito home and come groveling back to the UK on hands and knees. Then, once they have relocated back to the UK (??) they plan to do the most to “undermine” the Prince and Princess of Wales. Additionally, Eden believes that this sinister plot also involves members of the Starmer government, and god knows, possibly a handful of Tory PMs as well!! Meaning, Eden claims that government officials are now actively lobbying for a Sussex Restoration, without any consideration for the pitiful feelings of William and Kate! Well, would you like to hear Eden draw out this conspiracy even further? Some highlights from his latest column:

British royalists continue to act as if France is part of their kingdom: As soon as the Duke of Sussex lost a legal challenge over his taxpayer-funded security in Britain back in May, he rushed to give a BBC interview in which he admitted to being ‘devastated’ and declared, emotionally: ‘I can’t see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK at this point.’ Surely, then, I wasn’t the only one surprised to learn that his wife, Meghan, was in Paris last weekend? The French capital was, of course, the place where Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, was killed in a car crash after she voluntarily gave up her official Metropolitan Police protection officers. So you might have thought Paris would be the last place the Duke would want his wife to be, particularly as he was not with her.

Meghan visited Paris as part of Project Thaw: Given Harry’s security concerns for his family – which were sufficiently deep that he was prepared to sue his father’s Government at great personal expense – questions have been asked about the real reason for the Duchess of Sussex’s first visit to Europe since she attended the Invictus Games in Dusseldorf more than two years ago. Now, I can provide some answers. Meghan’s French sojourn was part of the ‘Establishment plot’ – backed by some senior politicians and courtiers – that I have written about here in previous weeks. And I’ve even discovered its name. It’s known as ‘Project Thaw’ because the aim is to ‘warm up’ the Duke’s and Duchess’s frosty relationships with the rest of the Royal Family and with the British people. And what could be better than pictures of her being greeted with kisses by the European fashion pack as well as Vogue supremo Dame Anna Wintour?

More about Project Thaw: ‘This trip is all part of the “thaw” process,’ a friend of the California-based couple tells me. ‘Project Thaw’ aims to melt that [British] hostility, building on the perceived success of the duke’s visit to Britain last month when he carried out charity engagements and, crucially, was invited to Clarence House for tea with King Charles. It was the first face-to-face meeting between father and son in 19 months. That was followed by a visit to Kyiv, where Harry just happened to arrive on the same train to the war-torn Ukrainian capital as the newly appointed Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper. I understand that Ms Cooper is among the Establishment figures who admire the duke and want him to play a bigger part in public life.

Eden predicts that Meghan will visit the UK by the end of the year: I can disclose that the next planned move in the plot – or ‘process’ as their pals prefer to put it, suggesting a natural progression – is the couple’s first joint visit to Britain since they attended a charity engagement in September 2022, then stayed on for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral. ‘Meghan will return to Britain before the year is out,’ the friend tells me, adding jokingly that she will be ‘bearing humble pie’. It remains to be seen whether ‘bearing humble pie’ – and eating it, presumably – is sufficient to placate the Royal Family or the British people.

[From The Daily Mail]

When Meghan lived in the UK, they did the most to break her, but she remained unbroken. When she left, they spent years trying to humble her and smear her from afar, but she still reclaimed her joy. Now these people live in a delusional world in which they cast Meghan as a woman desperate to be welcomed or accepted by the very same people who have tormented her for the past eight years. They position her as the outcast, servile and willing to eat “humble pie.” And think about this as well – all of this is because they’re trying to claim ownership of her to the extent that they’re arguing “Meghan visited Paris, which means she obviously wants to come back to England.” Like… did Britain colonize France and no one told me?
