AC/DC Shook Melbourne So Hard Earthquake-Detectors Picked It Up

The band’s Australian ‘Power Up’ tour kickoff registered on a seismograph at a local research center

AC/DC’s first show in their home country in a decade was so powerful the sound waves registered on earthquake detection equipment. The band apparently took their 1980 hit “You Shook Me All Night Long” literally in Melbourne when they kicked off the Australian leg of their Power Up tour.

According to Australia’s ABC News, the Seismology Research Centre in nearby Richmond picked up the vibrations in the 2-5 hertz range and locals also took to social media to discuss the strikingly loud music. The show took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground stadium, a little more than two miles from the Centre, but one resident living over six miles away also told ABC that they heard the concert too.

Still, Adam Pascale, a chief scientist at the Centre, told the publication that seismology is not just about how loud the concert was to the ear. “We’re picking up the ground motion, we’re not picking up the sound from the air. So you’ve got speakers on the ground pumping out vibrations and that gets transmitted through the ground, but also the crowd jumping up and down is feeding energy into the ground.”

Trending Stories

Pascale also said that the enthusiasm of the crowd is really what pushes a concert into earth-shaking territory. “If everyone’s sort of bouncing in unison, it tends to amplify the signal so we can pick it up a little bit better,” he said. “Whereas, if it’s sort of just general crowd motion, like even at the grand final at the MCG, we can still pick that up.” Pascale said AC/DC’s vibrations were no match for Taylor Swift’s in 2024, which emitted the largest signals they’ve registered from a show.

AC/DC’s aptly named Power Up Tour started in Europe last year, where it sold more than two million tickets for 24 shows before going on to sell out in North America. They kicked off the U.S. leg of the tour in Minneapolis, Minnesota this April. In Melbourne, the band played a favorite from their back-catalogue, “Jailbreak” for the first time since 1991.

Aneet Padda posted the partnership video in collaboration with Lakme, where she captioned, “Adding life and laughter to beauty, because it’s more fun when it’s real. So excited to be the Gen Z face of a brand that defined beauty for so many of us. Thank you Lakmē for making me a part of your family.”

The Gen Z face

Aneet Padda in the video embodied the Gen Z essence from head to toe. She wore a tank top with a scoop neckline, paired with light-wash denim jeans. Nailing Gen Z’s accessorising game to perfection, she chose layered chokers and chains with her signature hoops. Her makeup was the hero of the look, featuring full shimmery eyeshadow and glossy lips. The entire ensemble channelled classic Gen Z vibes, effortlessly capturing a bombshell energy with a laid-back, cool-girl charm.

Aneet said in the video, “Full glam or just a little bit of kajal, as long as I feel cute, that’s my vibe.” This encapsulates the experimental nature of Gen Z, who aren’t afraid to try new things as long as they pass the vibe check.

Fans reaction

Fans have been gushing over Lakme’s choice to make Aneet Padda the Gen Z face, praising how perfectly she fits the persona. Many fans agreed that “Lakmé picked the right person.”

Some fans noted that her unique facial features and lack of cosmetic procedures make her fit to be a natural, fresh face for the brand. One wrote, “Aneet padda is a real naturally beautiful diva herself. Lakme choose right person, thank you LAKME.” While another called it ‘refreshing’ saying, “Ahhhh so in for people with real features being a part of a beauty campaign. So refreshing.”

Some other fans also highlighted Kareena Kapoor’s recent return to Lakme as the brand face, with one user commenting, “Kareena & aneet oh lakmē understood the assignment.”

Aneet’s debut as Lakme’s Gen Z face was applauded by netizens, showing how it’s resonating with the youth.

San Sebastian-Bound ‘Dolores’ from Brazil Picked Up by The Open Reel

Leading Italian sales agent and production company The Open Reel has seized international sales rights to San Sebastián-bound “Dolores” by Marcelo Gomes (“Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures”) and Maria Clara Escobar (“Desterro”), sharing its trailer in exclusivity with Variety.

Based on a screenplay by the late Chico Teixeira, “Dolores” focuses on three generations of women, led by the titular Dolores, a 65-year old widow and recovering gambling addict (played by Carla Ribas, “Alice’s House”), who has had a dream about starting up her own casino. While she’s close to her granddaughter Duda (Ariane Aparecida), who works at a gun shop and aspires to migrate to the U.S., her relationship with her daughter Deborah (Naruna Costa), who’s waiting for her boyfriend to be released from prison, is rather strained.

The family drama is produced by Sara Silveira of Dezenove Som e Imagens, one of Brazil’s most prominent producers, behind such acclaimed hits as Gomes’ breakout Cannes-selected debut “Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures,” which represented Brazil at the Oscars in 2007, Berlinale main competition entry “All the Dead Ones” by Caetano Gotardo and Marco Dutra and “Cidade; Campo.”

Said The Open Reel’s Cosimo Santoro: “I immersed myself in the stories of Dolores, her daughter Deborah, and her granddaughter Duda: three women fighting to realize their dream of a better life, no matter the cost.”

“I’ve been following Marcelo Gomes’s films for years; I really enjoy them. I’m also delighted to be working again with producer Sara Silveria, with whom we collaborated on the film ‘Cidade; Campo,’ directed by Juliana Rojas and awarded at the Berlinale,” he added.

The trailer opens on Dolores listening to her horoscope while powdering her face, then it cuts to scenes of her daughter and granddaughter, the latter as she hones her shooting skills.

“Dolores is a woman brimming with charms and contradictions, facing the challenges of old age and betting on an all-or-nothing gamble. Despite a harsh routine in São Paulo’s periphery, Dolores refuses to stop dreaming of a better life. That’s her act of rebellion,” explained Gomes, who co-wrote the final screenplay with Escobar.

“Over the years, we built a friendship and a partnership that was born, first and foremost, from the desire to make cinema. To talk about people, imagine feelings, invent other paths. It seems to me that when two really want to make a film together, the work becomes a space of creation, of nourishment—in spite of any differences—of learning. I think, before anything else, we have a lot of respect for each other, for our work, for Chico’s work, for cinema,” said Escobar.

“The three generations, however, must adjust their dreams to transform the world together. There’s no solitary transformation. That was very important for us—the idea of dialectics in the film,” they said, adding: “One of the most compelling aspects of ‘Dolores’ is how the film is directly tied to our present, addressing issues like gambling addiction, firearm sales and the dream of immigration to the U.S.”

The film is intended to complete Teixeira’s acclaimed “Trilogy of Affections,” which began with “Alice’s House” (2007), followed by “Absence” (“Ausência”) (2014).

The casting choices are also a tribute to Teixeria, featuring not only Ribas but also Gilda Nomacce as Dolores’s best friend and Matheus Fagundes as Duda’s boyfriend, both leads in “Absence.”

“Dolores” is backed by the internationalization program Brasil no Mundo, Projeto Paradiso and São Paulo film-TV entity, Spcine.

Production is led by Silveira, Eliane Bandeira and Maria Ionescu. Misti Filmes is an associate producer while GT Produções is a co-producer. California Filmes releases the film in Brazil.

The 73rd edition of the San Sebastián Festival runs over Sept. 19-27.
