The Labubu Craze Hits Season 5 in ‘Ballgame’ Episode With Philadelphia Phillies

by jummy84 October 16, 2025

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Abbott Elementary Season 5 Episode 4, “Ballgame.”]

Abbott Elementary took the teachers out to a ballgame in the latest Season 5 episode, as select faculty enjoyed a Philadelphia Phillies game in celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week.

Before the educators hit the ballpark, though, Gregory (Tyler James Williams) observed his students playing with “Lafufus,” the knock-off version of the uber-popular toy, Labubus, which resembles little fuzzy monsters. Wondering aloud how the kids can afford Labubus, since they’re so expensive, one student, who is selling Lafufus clarifies that they’re more reasonably priced.

While you may wonder what this has to do with the Phillies game the Abbott faculty attends, it all connects to Janine’s (Quinta Brunson) close call with a stray ball, which bumps her in the head. It turns out, Janine is more than reluctant about attending the game, despite her boyfriend Gregory’s excitement, and she even pads her head with a helmet and a giant foam hat on top of that.

Eventually, she loosens up enough to take the helmet off just in time for her to get hit with the ball. As a means of compensation, the Phillies offer to have Janine and her colleagues meet their mascot, the Phillie Phanatic. While they’re pretty excited about the special treatment, it’s their opportunity to meet Phillies left fielder Kyle Schwarber.

Taking time to chat with them and sign souvenirs, Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) ends up selling some of the autographs back at school, only to learn that the student who purchased them had attached them to her stash of Lafufus, raising their prices in the process. But instead of admonishing the girl for her business acumen, Melissa is rather impressed, and so are we.

And while a Schwarber signature might be worth +$50 to an Abbott student or teacher, the player’s appearance surely means a whole lot more to viewers at home tuning into this exciting episode. What did you think of Abbott Elementary‘s venture into the live sporting event space? Let us know in the comments section below, and let us know your take on the Lafufus empire being built by one of the students.

Sports aren’t just about the action on the field — sometimes, the drama in the stands steals the spotlight. In 2025, a handful of viral fan incidents have sparked heated debates about etiquette, entitlement, and sportsmanship. From the so-called “Phillies Karen,” who pressured a dad into handing over a foul ball meant for his son, to a Polish CEO caught snatching a player’s cap at the US Open, these moments have had fans talking just as much as the games themselves.

See the most unforgettable “Karen” controversies at sporting events this year below.

Phillies vs. Marlins Foul Ball Incident

The September 5 Phillies–Marlins game turned chaotic in the stands after a home run ball landed in the glove of young fan Lincoln Feltwell, who was celebrating his birthday. His dad, Drew Feltwell, had caught the ball and gifted it to him, but the moment was interrupted when a woman, now dubbed the “Phillies Karen,” demanded the souvenir. With cameras rolling and fans watching, Drew ultimately handed it over to avoid further confrontation.

The incident exploded online, sparking debates about fan etiquette, fairness, and what parents should do in similar situations. While the woman’s identity remains unconfirmed, MLB and player Harrison Bader later stepped in to make things right, gifting Lincoln a signed bat and memorabilia to replace the lost ball.

US Open Hat Snatch

Another viral “Karen” moment happened far from the baseball diamond — at the 2025 US Open. Polish CEO Piotr Szczerek was filmed reaching over to grab a tennis player’s cap that appeared to be meant for a young boy in the stands. The shocking clip spread quickly, with many calling it poor sportsmanship and an embarrassing move for someone in his position.

Facing widespread backlash, Szczerek later apologized on Facebook, admitting he should have let the child have the souvenir. In his post, he wrote, “I take full responsibility for my extremely poor judgment and hurtful actions. It was never my intent to steal away a prized memento from the young fan. I became caught up in the heat of the moment and the joy of the victory, and I believed Majchrzak was handing a hat to me to give to my sons, who had previously asked for autographs. Regardless of what I believed was happening, the actions I took hurt the young boy and disappointed the fans.”

Ball Stolen at Mets Game

The New York Mets also saw fan drama unfold in 2025, when a ball was snatched from the hands of an elderly man in the crowd. Witnesses described the shocking moment as unnecessary and cruel, especially given the man’s excitement at securing the keepsake.

The viral “Phillies Karen” has become the internet’s latest obsession as social media sleuths try to find out who she is. The rumor mill quickly exploded, with some speculating she resembled a person who was fired by a New Jersey school district.

It all began during a September 5, 2025, Phillies-Marlins game in Miami, Florida. Phillies player Harrison Bader hit a left-field home run, and fans in the stands clamored to grab the ball. As seen in footage, a woman in a Phillies jersey appeared close to grabbing the ball after it hit the seats. But a man in a red jersey was quicker and snatched it to give to a young boy, likely his son.

After hugging the child and giving him the ball, the woman approached the adult and grabbed his arm to berate him. over the ball. She was seemingly heard yelling, “You took it from me! You took it from me! That was in my hands.” Seconds later, the man gave up and surrendered the ball to her.

Here’s what we know about the woman who argued over the home run ball.

Is the ‘Phillies Karen’ Named Cheryl Richardson-Wagner?

No, the woman is not named Cheryl Richardson-Wagner, despite an initial rumor that spread due to their resemblance. Cheryl took to social media to clear her name, pointing out that she’s not even a Phillies fan.

“OK everyone … I’m NOT the crazy Philly Mom (but I sure would love to be as thin as she is and as fast),” Cheryl wrote in a public statement.

Was the ‘Phillies Karen’ Fired From a School District?

No, the woman was not ever part of the Hammonton Public School District in New Jersey. Some online users started the rumor, and the school quickly shut it down in a public statement, according to Breaking Atlantic County.

“Anyone who works for our school district, attended as a student or lives in our community would obviously have caught the ball bare-handed in the first place, avoiding this entire situation,” the district said in its statement. The school added that the woman “is not, and has never been an employee of the Hammonton Public Schools” and concluded, “Social media and news reports indicating that she is are incorrect,”

Who Is the ‘Phillies Karen’? Has She Been Identified Yet?

As we all remember from A League of Their Own, “There’s no crying in baseball” — but apparently, there are still arguments. A September 5, 2025, game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Miami Marlins has made headlines over a heated interaction between fans. A woman took a baseball from a man who gave it to a child, and the internet is calling her “Phillies Karen.” So, who exactly is the woman who stirred up the controversy?

Below, we’re breaking down what we know so far about “Phillies Karen.”

Why Is a Phillies Fan Being Called a Karen?

Nobody likes a mean Karen, and that’s exactly what happened at the September 5 Phillies-Marlins game. The situation unfolded after the Phillies’ Harrison Bader hit a home run to left field, and, as always, fans in the stands scrambled to grab the ball. One woman wearing a Phillies jersey was seen about to grab the ball after it hit the floor of the seats, but a man wearing a red jersey quickly snagged it and walked back to give it to a young boy, likely his child.

After hugging the kiddo and giving him the ball, the woman aggressively approached the adult and grabbed his arm. Appearing to berate him over the ball, the woman seemingly was heard yelling, “That was ours! … No, you took it from me! You took it from me! That was in my hands.”

Just seconds into the argument, the man gave her the ball, appearing to reply, “Fine!” and she walked back to her seat.

Is the Woman Who Took the Ball From the Kid Named Karen?

It’s unclear what the woman’s actual name is, but the internet quickly dubbed her a “Karen” to diss her behavior at the Phillies vs. Marlins game.

Who Is the Phillies Karen? What We Know So Far

At the time of publication, the woman’s identity is still unclear, and no other information about her has been made public. She has not publicly commented on the matter either.

Has the Man With the Young Phillies Fan Spoken Out About the Woman?

No, at the time of publication, the man — who appeared to be the boy’s father — has not publicly commented on the situation.

It turns out both the Phillies and the Marlins made the young fan’s day. A staffer from LoanDepot Park approached the family after the heated altercation and offered the boy a gift bag. According to a nearby fan’s footage from the aftermath, the staff member asked the boy if he was OK after giving him a large bag of baseball merchandise.

But that wasn’t all! Following the game, Harrison took a moment to sign a baseball bat for the young fan, as seen on the team’s social media account.

Abbott Elementary Films Episode During Phillies Game

by jummy84 August 29, 2025
written by jummy84

Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson and her sitcom cast were on hand at a Philadelphia Phillies game on Thursday night to shoot a season five bottle episode during the live event.

Their presence at Citizens Bank Park was marked on the Instagram page for the Philadelphia Phillies mascot, the Phillie Phanatic. A bottle episode is usually done to save on production costs. But Brunson, who comes from west Philadelphia and plays Janine Teagues on the ABC workplace sitcom, first teased a live event filming for the series in July at San Diego Comic Con.

“You can expect us to be filming at a live event,” a coy Brunson hinted at the time, before adding, “but I do think that Philly sports fans will be very happy.” Then Thursday night, with the Phillies playing the Atlanta Braves, Brunson and her fellow West Philly Abbot Elementary teachers were on hand, in the stands and on the field for a group photo, to shoot the anticipated episode.

Brunson, a two-time Emmy winner, wore a Phillies jersey as the single-camera comedy about a small group of teachers at a chronically underfunded public school left a studio audience behind to film at the sporting event. The bottle episode shoot had the blessing of MLB Studios, Major League Baseball’s in-house studio.

“As big fans of the series, MLB Studios initiated outreach to Warner Bros. and subsequently the Phillies to get the shooting process started. Collaboration between MLB Studios, the Phillies and the show commenced to shoot a bottle episode on-location at a Phillies game, with a goal of ensuring authenticity and access to the field,” a statement from MLB Studios obtained by The Hollywood Reporter says.

Abbott Elementary, for which Brunson also serves as creator and executive producer, wrapped up its fourth season by nabbing six Emmy nominations, including best comedy and best writing for a comedy series, which Brunson won for the series’ pilot episode in 2022.
