Diwali 2025: Veterinarian doctor shares 5 tips to keep pets calm and safe from fireworks sounds

Happy Diwali 2025! Pet parents prepare in advance before Diwali evening to ensure your dogs and cats stay calm and stress-free.

Diwali 2025: The festival of light is a celebration for all of us, full of excitement and illumination, but when celebrated with crackers, many are excluded from joy. For many, bursting crackers are synonymous with Diwali celebrations. Besides the most immediate consequence, which is the emission of polluted gas, the loud sounds also overwhelmingly impact vulnerable groups, like elderly people and pets at home.

Dogs, anyway, have a heightened sense of hearing, so the sounds are intensely overstimulating for them. They become frightened, cowering in corners, trying to hide.

To address this concern of pet parents, HT Lifestyle spoke to Dr Deepak Saraswat, head vet at Zigly, who pointed out that noise sensitivity in pets can make Diwali stressful for them.

“Diwali brings bright sparkles and joy, but for dogs, the loud firecrackers can be quite stressful. Noise sensitivity in pets can make this festive time tough for our furry friends,” the vet shared.

The way forward is to ensure that pets feel comfortable and secure amid the celebrations. Typically, Diwali evening sees a series of explosions with people everywhere bursting crackers at the same time. There’s no breather space, but just constant explosive noises. This can be very disorienting and anxiety-inducing for dogs.

Veterinarian doctor Saraswat shared 5 tips for pet parents so that they can prepare beforehand and reduce their pet’s stress:

1. Make a quiet, safe place

  • Create a quiet space in your home, not near windows or doors. Put your dog’s favourite bed, blankets, and toys to make it warm and inviting.
  • Closing curtains and closing windows are good at muffling large noises and protecting from flashing lights. This may calm your dog when the celebrations get noisy.

2. Use soothing sounds

  • Play calming music or switch on the television in the background to drown out firework noises.
  • Soft tunes or pet playlists reduce anxiety and distract your dog from sudden booms.
  • This creates a more peaceful indoor environment and helps your pet relax during peak cracker hours.

3. Keep close and comfort your dog

  • Being in their presence does matter. Spend more time with them nearby, offer gentle cuddles, and console your dog if he/she seem to be tense.
  • Some dogs enjoy massages or snuggle sessions, monitor their reaction, and calm them down in a way that they like.
  • Please don’t leave them at home alone, especially on late nights when crackers are most potent.

4. Schedule early walks and limit time outdoors

  • Organise walks early morning or during quieter periods, far from cracker spurts.
  • Always keep your dog on a leash and avoid noisy, crowded areas.
  • For safety, it is best not to take your dog out when there are likely to be fireworks, and ensure home doors and gates are shut to avoid accidental release.

5. Use calming products if necessary

  • If your dog is excessively anxious, consider using calming products like anxiety vests, or pheromone diffusers that your vet recommends.
  • These provide soothing comfort through pressure or calming fragrances.
  • Be sure to consult your vet first before attempting new remedies, and have your pet’s water bowl full to help alleviate stress and dehydration.

Prue Leith remembers Queen Elizabeth’s pride at inventing dorgi after royal pets hook-up

Queen Elizabeth was very proud to have accidentally created a new dog breed through a “secret liaison” between two royal pets, Dame Prue Leith has revealed.

The dorgi hybrid occurred in the 1970s when one of the Queen’s corgis, Tiny, had a private moment with a dachsund named Pipkin, who belonged to the monarch’s sister Princess Margaret, and the two siblings were so enamoured with the pups the tryst produced that they began breeding the pooches.

Great British Bake Off judge Prue can recall a meeting with the Queen and her husband Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace years ago where the late monarch shared her pride at having played a part in creating a new breed of dog that was officially recognised by The Kennel Club, the UK organisation that runs the Crufts international dog show.

Appearing on the Making A Scene podcast, Prue revealed: “One day I was asked to lunch at Buckingham Palace with Prince Philip and the Queen and they had two or three other people from the Palace and then they had six guests. I think this was the idea of getting the royals to meet the people. There was an Olympic sportsman, the Archbishop of Canterbury and various people – so there was a mixture of posh people and ordinary people.

“This flunky told us at the beginning it’s not the done thing to initiate a conversation with the royals. Of course, I forgot that.

“So the Queen came in and she was surrounded by little dogs. I immediately said, ‘Oh, how wonderful ma’am you’ve brought the corgis to lunch.’ She said, ‘They’re not corgis, they’re dorgis.’ Then we had a long conversation about her breeding programme and how one of her dogs had a secret liaison with a dachshund, and so the produce of this union was one half corgi, half dachshund and so she adored this dorgi and so she started to breed dorgis. She was very excited because she said The Kennel Club had just agreed that this was a recognised breed.”

TV chef Prue, 85, admits it is a cherished memory and it came from a conversation she would never have instigated if she didn’t decide to ignore royal protocol.

She added: “So I had this proper conversation with her about something completely you don’t think you’re going to talk about to the royals. I would never have done if I wasn’t just clumsy.”

During her lifetime, Queen Elizabeth – who passed away in September 2022 at the age of 96 – was a committed dog lover and had many corgis and dorgis with a variety of fun names that included Cider, Rum, Berry, Candy, Brandy, Chipper, Harris, Pickles, Piper, Tinker, Vulcan and Fergus.

The former monarch was also Patron of the Dogs Trust dog welfare organization in the UK and her children and grandchildren inherited her love of canine companions.

King Charles and his wife Queen Camilla have a Lagotto Romagnolo named Snuff and a rescue dog called Mole as pets.

Charles’ son Prince William and his wife Princess Catherine have a pet cocker spaniel named Orla, who is the niece of their late dog Lupo, who passed away in November 2020.

World Tourism Day 2025: Vet shares 5 simple tips for keeping pets comfy when they are your travel partner

World Tourism Day 2025: If your furry friend is your travel companion, make sure you follow this vet-approved checklist for a stress-free experience.

World Tourism Day 2025: September 27 is observed as World Tourism Day, a day which is designated to celebrate the many joys of travel. Travel’s value is also measured by the company, such as pets, whose presence makes the journey more goofy and memorable. While people aspire for ZNMD (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara) moments with friends, let’s not forget that furry friends can also turn ordinary trips into something extraordinary.

But your planning needs to be solid if you are thinking of making your pet your travel partner. Dr Deepak Saraswat, head vet at Zigly, told HT Lifestyle in an interview that often long journeys can be stressful for pets, making them act out.

He added, “Long travels by road, train, or plane can be stressful for your pets. Foreign surroundings, long travel time, and new noises tend to make them restless or anxious. It is possible to ensure the experience is more relaxed and comfortable for pets with proper planning and some intelligent tricks up your sleeve.”

So the question is, how do you make your pet feel comfy on the trip? It is not rocket science, and your pet is not a stubborn critic whom you can’t please. With a little bit of love, care and lots of pre-planning, your trip with your pet has the potential to be picture-perfect.

Here’s a checklist, vet Dr Saraswat shared with us:

1. Establish a comfortable setting

  • Carry your pet’s favourite toy, blanket, or even a piece of clothing with you that has your scent on it.
  • Familiar smells and textures give a feeling of security and comfort, and this will help alleviate anxiety during the trip.

2. Exercise prior to travel

  • A fatigued pet is many times a relaxed pet. Give your dog a fast walk or get your cat to run around vigorously prior to beginning the trip.
  • This will release accumulated energy and make them more apt to relax while travelling.

3. Comfort through carriers and restraints

  • For safety and peace of mind, employ a secure pet carrier or seatbelt harness.
  • Filling the carrier with soft bedding and leaving it partially open can provide your pet with a den-like, snug area where they feel safe.

4. Have hydration and light snacks within reach

  • Bring an emergency water bottle and small amounts of your pet’s normal food or treats.
  • Providing water at intervals keeps them hydrated, and small, familiar portions of food can be a comfort and distraction.
  • Do not overfeed before travelling in order to avoid nausea.

5. Calming aids and soothing techniques

  • Some pets respond well to calming aids like vet-approved sprays, chews, or even natural remedies such as lavender essence (in pet-safe forms).
  • Gentle reassurance, soothing music, or white noise can also help create a more relaxed environment.

Think Omega-3s are just for you? Your dog needs it too: Vet shares top nutrients for growing pets

In wellness discourse, a balanced diet is a hot topic, and for all the good reasons. Nutritional deficiencies and health issues pop up when you don’t follow a nutritionally sufficient diet. Omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics are some of the most talked about components in the diet. But besides your health, do you know your furry friends too benefit from these nutrients? For your pet’s diet, it’s time to go beyond generic store-bought nutrition and take a closer look at their nutrition gap.

In fact, in the early days of a puppy or kitten, they suffer from something called ‘immunity gap.’ Addressing more about this issue seen in pets, Dr Vishal Dangle, Scientific Communications Manager, and in-house Vet at Royal Canin, shared with HT Lifestyle that young puppies are vulnerable after they wean off.

This is particularly important to know for pet parents whose pets recently birthed younglings. Or those who have adopted very young puppies or kittens.

Dr Dangle talked about how immunity becomes vulnerable. “Much like in human babies, a pet’s immune system is shaped in the starting stages of life, but the right pet care and diet play an essential role in this process.”

Immunity gap

How does this immunity gap happen? He explained, “At birth, puppies and kittens receive passive immunity through their mother’s milk, particularly colostrum, which provides vital antibodies required for a strengthened immune system. However, once they wean off at 4 weeks old, they transition into a critical period where they are most vulnerable to infectious diseases. This period is also called the immunity gap, and it lasts up to 12 weeks of age.”

So, during their early weeks, their immune system is still developing, making them prone to infections and health issues. The vet suggested vaccinations can build this immunity. And even after the initial phase is over and the puppy is growing, growing pets need a more robust nutritional plan so that they build a good immune, defence system against diseases.

Nutritional requirements

For your growing pet, following a proper nutrition plan is vital. The balanced diet ideally should cover all the macros, like proteins and micronutrients, like vitamins, are important. So you need to broaden your horizon, check the food labels or maybe even make some yourself.

Dr Vishal Dangle shared, “One of them (nutrients) is high-quality protein, which fuels the production of immune cells and antibodies. Aside from this, Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA &DHA, help support brain and immune development. Antioxidants like vitamin C and E, lutein, and taurine are also vital as they combat oxidative stress, while zinc and selenium play direct roles in immune cell function.”

Gut health’s important for your furry companion too. “Prebiotics and probiotics are equally important for a healthy gut. Since a significant portion of immune activity takes place in the gut, fostering a healthy microbiome is crucial. These nutrients support digestive health, improve nutrient absorption, and help the body distinguish between harmful and beneficial microbes,” Dr Dangle elaborated on the importance of gut-friendly foods for growing puppies and kittens.
