Albania Propaganda Archives Reveal a Passion for the Cinematic

Roland Sejko’s doc “A State Film,” culled from a vast archive of official footage made under the regime of Albanian strongman Enver Hoxha, is a fascinating study in the power of image and myth.

Screened in the main competition at the Czech Republic’s primary annual nonfiction film event, the Ji.hlava Intl. Documentary Film Festival, the compilation of carefully constructed images for the masses contains much to unpack, says Sejko.

“I’ve been working for several years with propaganda film archives — first with Istituto Luce Cinecitta, and also with the archives of the Albanian communist regime,” Sejko says. “Both contain thousands of films created to construct a political narrative, often with striking cinematic ambition.”

The genre is one Sejko explored in his previous film, “The Image Machine of Alfredo C.,” screened in 2021 at the Venice film fest. That film tells the true story of an Istituto Luce cameraman who filmed Mussolini and fascist propaganda, and, eventually, the head of communist Albania.

“It was a hybrid film, but during its making I realized that the vast Albanian film archive — and the central figure of Enver Hoxha — had never been narrated exclusively through their own images.”

So Sejko, as a professional archivist and head of the editorial department for Italy’s Cinecitta Luce, set about analyzing and curating from the decades of state propaganda films.

“The Albanian propaganda newsreels and documentaries clearly bear the mark of Eastern Bloc cinematography,” Sejko says. “The first Albanian camera operators were trained by Soviet masters — starting with Roman Karmen, the legendary chronicler of revolutions and wars.”

“There was never a manual for the propaganda cameraman, no written rulebook for how to film a regime. Yet something invisible governed their images. A First of May parade filmed in communist Albania looks strikingly similar to one filmed in Moscow or Bucharest or Sofia in the same years.”

Indeed, the images of cheering worker heroes and dancing girls in traditional folk garb seen in “A State Film” are hauntingly familiar.

Spanning the post-WWII years, with Albanians urged to “obey and execute the laws of the government” while honoring heroes’ bloody sacrifices, the footage makes clear Hoxha’s devotion to Stalin and Yugoslavian dictator Josip Broz Tito.

Outsize portraits of all three are hauled down endless streets as crowds of obligatory fans parade their wheelbarrows, shovels and carbines. Praises are sung for industry while defensive bunkers, of which Hoxha build hundreds of thousands, withstand test blasts, proving their readiness to stand up to decadent imperialist forces from the West.

Dogs and guinea pigs are sacrificed, presumably to test exposure to potential gas attacks.

And all the while, there’s always another rousing patriotic song for the peasants to sing.

“It is not just the cameraman’s technique that creates this resemblance,” Sejko says. “It is the vision of the world being shown: always the same choreography of collective joy.”

That said, as audiences take in “A State Film,” they begin to perceive that the images have been somehow distilled. Then they may notice the soundtrack, with the original heavy-handed narration replace by the sounds of the breeze in trees, birds chirping and feet tramping unpaved roads.

“In official propaganda films — newsreels, documentaries, parades — the narrator’s voice was not descriptive but prescriptive: it told viewers what to think. Replacing it with another commentary, even a critical one, would have meant repeating the same mechanism.”

“So I removed not only the voice but the whole original soundtrack, keeping only what was real — applause, songs, speeches. I built a new, realistic soundscape with footsteps, murmurs, creaks, silences, as if the scenes had been recorded live. This new texture restores the images’ physicality and opens a space where sound itself becomes a narrative tool.”

Add to this the intercutting of footage from Hoxha’s personal archive, showing moments away from the cheering masses, invariably featuring drives in the dictator’s favorite black Mercedes, and a striking contrast emerges.

These motifs take on a symbolic value, according to Sejko, and suggest the loneliness and isolation of power. “A State Film” raises the question of how forms of propaganda have changed, while also forcing uncomfortable realizations as to how many of the classic tropes are still being rolled out today.

“A State Film” has been described as demonstrating “how the archive is not just a repository of images, but a tool for interpreting and rewriting history.”

Indeed, the chilling parade of carefully staged scenes does seem to transcend the framework of national history, and, as the director says, explore the function of the image in the political sphere, and its ability to create collective memory.

Luca Castellani: The Actor-Producer Whose Passion Project AMERICA Is Turning Heads on the Road to the Oscars

by jummy84 October 16, 2025
written by jummy84

After years of studying his craft, chasing auditions, and searching for the right story to tell, Luca Castellani decided to create his own opportunity. The result is AMERICA, a 22-minute live-action short that’s already being called one of the most emotionally resonant films of the year and a frontrunner in the Oscar race.

For Castellani, AMERICA is more than a role; it’s the culmination of years of discipline and artistic pursuit. “I’ve been training for this moment most of my life,” he says. “There comes a point where you stop waiting for permission to be seen, you build your own door.” He adds, “For years, I auditioned for roles that never came close to representing the kind of truth I wanted to tell. So I decided to write and produce something that did.”

That door opened when he crossed paths with acclaimed Brazilian filmmaker Aly Muritiba, whose reputation for deeply human storytelling (The Factory, Private Desert, City of God: The Series) has made him one of Latin America’s most respected auteurs. Together, they crafted AMERICA, a story about love, identity, and the quiet ache of belonging. “Aly and I met at exactly the right time,” says Castellani. “We both wanted to tell a story about human connection, something that transcends borders, languages, and politics.”

In the film, Castellani plays Tom, a Brazilian immigrant whose search for the American dream takes a heartbreaking turn. His performance is stripped of artifice, raw, unguarded, and deeply lived-in. There’s a moment late in the film, when Tom drives through the night beside his dying partner, softly singing an old song, where everything else falls away. Fear, disbelief, and devotion flicker across his face in silence. It’s acting that doesn’t perform emotion, it reveals it. “That scene broke me,” Luca admits. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done on screen. But I think in that pain, I found the truth of who Tom really was.”

Muritiba calls Luca’s approach “precise and fearless.” He adds, “Luca has that rare stillness that pulls you in. He understands that silence can speak louder than dialogue.”

When traditional casting paths didn’t yield the complex roles he sought, Castellani took control of his narrative. “Producing AMERICA was never about control,” he explains, “it was about responsibility, to the story, to the crew, and to the craft. I knew this was a film that deserved to exist.” He reflects, “I’ve always believed that if the story chooses you, you owe it everything. That’s how I felt about AMERICA, it wasn’t just a project, it was a calling.”

His producer’s touch ensured that the film remained intimate and authentic, assembling a world-class team that included cinematographer Andressa Cordeiro, editor Karen Akerman, and sound designer Pavel Iaroshenko. “We didn’t have a massive budget,” Luca recalls, “but what we had was heart. Every person on that set was there because they believed in what we were doing.” The result is a piece of cinema that feels handcrafted, each frame charged with purpose.

The collaboration between Castellani and Muritiba feels less like actor-director and more like two craftsmen building something sacred. “Aly works with empathy,” says Luca. “He trusts his actors completely. That freedom made it possible to go to darker, more honest places.” He continues, “He gives you space to fail, to try, to explore and in that space, you find the real magic.”

Muritiba echoes that respect: “Luca is not afraid of vulnerability. He leads by example; his passion elevates everyone around him.”

AMERICA has quietly become one of the most talked-about short films of the season, earning praise at private screenings in Los Angeles, London, and São Paulo. Critics have compared Castellani’s performance to the early breakthroughs of Gael García Bernal and Timothée Chalamet actors who radiate intensity without demanding attention. “It’s humbling to even be mentioned alongside those names,” says Luca. “But what matters to me is that people feel something real when they watch AMERICA. That’s all I ever wanted.”

With the film gaining traction in Academy circles, Castellani remains grounded. “The dream isn’t the award,” he says. “The dream is that the work reaches people, that it stirs something.” He pauses before adding, “But I won’t lie it feels good to know that all those years of hustling, of being told ‘no,’ led me to this moment.”

Yet, as AMERICA continues its journey through the awards circuit, it’s clear that Luca Castellani’s moment has arrived. The actor who once built his own opportunity is now standing on the threshold of a career that could redefine him, not just as a performer, but as a filmmaker with something vital to say. “This film changed me,” he reflects. “It reminded me why I fell in love with cinema in the first place because it has the power to make people see each other again.”

Saurabh Shukla Says Ranbir Kapoor Brought Back His Passion for Acting

by jummy84 October 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Saurabh Shukla is indeed a remarkable artist who has consistently made an impact across various genres in cinema over the years. Apart from his talent as an actor, he has also established himself as a respected screenwriter and director. Interestingly, Saurabh recently mentioned that he once experienced a period where he lost interest in acting, mainly because of the unfulfilling roles he was being offered. He revealed that Ranbir Kapoor played an important role in helping him regain his enthusiasm. The two collaborated on director Anurag Basu’s film, Barfi! (2012).

During a conversation with ANI, he shared, “I met Ranbir in Barfi. I was going through a low phase when Anurag Basu offered me the film. By then, I had become so frustrated. People used to say, ‘Saurabh, you’re such a good actor,’ but when roles came, they were always cameos. I mean, you’d have a day of shooting… and in that one day, what could you do? How much of a role would you have, and how much of your acting could you show?”

Mentioning that he wasn’t earning much due to the same, he shared, “I was really struggling. So, I started telling people that ‘I don’t act; I’m not an actor. I’m a writer, and I’ve made films.’ When Anurag offered me this film, my first words were, ‘Anurag, call me only if you have something for me that’s worth doing. Otherwise, don’t call me at all.’ I’m so lucky that he didn’t take it the wrong way. He said, ‘Sir, if I didn’t have something for you, why would I call you?’ He gave me that film, which was wonderful.”

Ranbir Kapoor Saurabh Shukla

Saurabh Shukla mentioned that he met Ranbir Kapoor during a period when acting in films felt somewhat routine for him, and he said that Ranbir Kapoor played a crucial role in reigniting his enthusiasm for the craft. He said, “He was so charming, young, full of talks and dreams and everything. I really enjoyed just sitting with him… He was not just educated. So, you can discuss anything with him. Also, there’s a sense of innocence in the youth. As we grow older, we gain a bit of head weight. But he was very young. I really enjoyed sitting with him and talking. There was mutual respect. While acting, he would do something, and I would get something from that. So, my interest came back in acting, and I restarted thinking about it like, ‘yes, acting is a great joy,’ and since then I have been acting.” Saurabh concluded by saying that Ranbir does not seem to be burdened by the expectations that might come with being a member of one of Bollywood’s most prominent families.

From the Archives: Victoria Beckham on Finding Her Life’s Passion

by jummy84 October 12, 2025
written by jummy84

Like many women designers, Victoria approaches her work in a way that’s uniquely personal and subjective. “I’ve always had to make the best of what I’ve got,” she tells me. “I’ve never been a six-foot-tall, skinny model [she is five feet four], so therefore I want to create an illusion. People always think I’m taller than I am—not just because of the shoes I wear but because of the way I dress. It’s all relatively streamlined.”

When Victoria conceived her brand, “I wanted clothes—whether a pair of jeans or an evening dress—that I would wear myself. That’s the final test. Would I wear it? If I would, I put it out there, and if I wouldn’t, I don’t.” Her “sucky-sucky” dress is a case in point. “It gives [my customers] a little waist. It’s great on the boobs, it’s great on the bottom,” says Victoria, whose polished collections rap—if at times bordering on an infomercial—is worlds apart from those of designers who present inspiration boards and blind you with arcane references. “We spend a lot of time perfecting our fit,” she continues. “We spend hours obsessing over a shoulder. My aim is to create the perfect dress!”

Above all, Victoria’s approach is strictly pragmatic. “When a season goes well,” she says, “the first thing I think is, Oh, great, I can do another season. I’m very realistic. I’m creative—but women need to want to buy the dresses.”

During fittings (on the day I visit, for fashion, shoes, and handbags), Victoria is all-seeing. “I take opinions on board and digest it all. Think about it and then make the final decision,” she tells me. “I’ve got to believe in it. Otherwise, how can I expect other people to believe in it?” She can also be droll. During the shoe meeting, Victoria is judging the exact placement of straps on unfitted ankle boots that Christian Louboutin has made for her runway show. “I think it’s chicer with just the two. I think it looks a bit Puss in Boots with three,” she says, “a bit Mary Poppins. And if they’re going to do the cuff, it should be around the top—or they’re going to look like they’ve got cankles!”

Jim Caviezel Not Returning as Jesus for Passion of the Christ Sequels

Mel Gibson has apparently decided to recast the role of Jesus in his upcoming Passion of the Christ sequels.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Jim Caviezel will not return to play the lead role in Gibson’s upcoming two-part sequel, which is slated to arrive in theaters in 2027. The role of Mary Magdalene, portrayed by Monica Bellucci in the first film, is also being recast.

The news is something of a surprise as Gibson previously confirmed that Caviezel would be able reprise the role with the use of de-aging technology.

Lisa Christiansen’s Passion for Pet Wellness: From Hollywood to Health Advocacy

Lisa Christiansen’s Passion for Pet Wellness: From Hollywood to Health Advocacy

by jummy84 September 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Actress Lisa Christiansen shares her commitment to pet wellness and the impact of proper nutrition and mental care.

I’ve always been into more natural remedies when it comes to certain health issues, but it definitely took off during the pandemic when I was really focused on finding ways to keep my family healthy. I’ve always had dogs over the years, so I’ve seen a myriad of health issues. I’m a big fan of adaptogens and different herbs, and I wondered if there were things that I was using that could help my dogs, too.

My passion began in childhood, growing up with a menagerie of adopted and rescued animals. I saw firsthand how small changes in diet and daily routines dramatically improved their happiness and vitality. As my platform grew, and I realized I could use my voice to advocate for better standards in pet care, from educating about the importance of balanced meals to sharing the benefits of enrichment activities. I believe that true pet wellness comes from approaching their needs as complex, sentient beings, deserving of the same love and attention we give ourselves.

It was those things combined that led me to put my fur babies on The Farmers Dog, which I began due to Cindy, my Chinese Crested, who passed away from cancer but not before The Farmers Dog extended her life by over one year. My veterinarian agreed and concluded that adding The Farmers Dog did play a significant role in extending her quality of life and offered her more time here with us before cancer took her.

Pet wellness includes nutrition, exercise, and mental health, but what aspect do you think is often overlooked when it comes to a pet’s overall well-being?

I think mental health is something that’s definitely been overlooked for people, and of course that applies to animals as well.

Absolutely, I think mental health for pets is one area that doesn’t get enough attention. People often focus on feeding high-quality food and getting their pets outside for exercise, but emotional well-being is every bit as important. Pets are deeply affected by the energy and routines within their homes; changes, loud noises, or periods of isolation can really impact them. I’ve found that making time for gentle, focused moments like daily play, puzzle toys, or even short training sessions helps create a sense of security and engagement. Enrichment activities, routine, and positive reinforcement go a long way in preventing anxiety and behavioral issues. Sometimes, it’s just about sitting quietly together and being present those moments can mean everything for a pet’s sense of peace.

I believe our pets can sense how we’re feeling and our energy, so it definitely can affect how they are feeling. Anxious pets are often ones who have anxious parents!

With the holiday season approaching, it’s easy for pets to overeat or miss out on proper nutrition. How do you keep your pets on a healthy diet during this time?

It’s a challenge for all of us! I try to keep all the dogs consistent with their normal meals, but if I know that they’re going to be getting some special treats such as turkey from the table or something, I’ll try and cut their normal food down just a bit.

The holidays are a whirlwind of celebration and change not just for us, but for our pets, too. To keep my dogs on track, I try to keep their feeding routines consistent, resisting the temptation to give them table scraps or holiday treats that could upset their digestion. Instead, I prepare special, pet-friendly snacks using wholesome ingredients I know are safe for them, like steamed veggies or homemade dog biscuits. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to involve my family in caring for our pets, remembering the importance of lovingly saying “no” to begging eyes when it comes to foods that aren’t good for our furry friends.

Beyond nutrition, staying active is crucial during this busy time. Even when our schedules are packed, I make sure we take daily walks or have a little playtime in the yard. I find that not only does it help keep my dogs physically fit, but it also supports their mental well-being something often overlooked amid the festivities. A little extra love, structure, and mindfulness around the holidays can go a long way in making sure our pets are as happy and healthy as possible heading into the new year.

Some pet owners are hesitant to invest in pet insurance. What would you say to them about the importance of having that extra protection for their pets?

I would say that each person knows their pet and finances best, so they should make the best decision for themselves. I definitely know that vet bills can become overwhelming, especially since I have multiple pets and have seen all sorts of health issues and emergencies come up over the years.

How do you balance your career with your advocacy for animal welfare? What drives you to continue this important work?

Balancing my career with advocacy for animal welfare is never a simple task, but it’s one that brings immense purpose to my everyday life. My drive to remain active in this work stems from the deep connection I have with animals their resilience, loyalty, and ability to enrich our lives in countless ways. While my professional commitments can be demanding, I’ve learned to intertwine my advocacy with my career by seeking opportunities where my platform can amplify the voices of those who cannot speak for themselves.

It often requires careful planning and a willingness to prioritize, carving out time for shelter visits, nonprofit collaborations, or community education events, even when my calendar is overflowing. I remind myself that every small effort contributes to a much larger movement. It’s the hope of making a tangible impact whether that’s finding a forever home for a senior dog, championing humane legislation, or supporting grassroots rescue groupsthat keeps me going.

My work is fueled not only by compassion but also by the knowledge that, together, we can create lasting change. Every story of an animal saved or a family reunited with a beloved pet encourages me to persevere, knowing that there is always more to be done.

Looking ahead, I’m constantly inspired to deepen my commitment to animal welfare. The landscape is always evolving—new challenges arise, but so do innovative solutions. I’m passionate about harnessing partnerships and technology to reach broader audiences, whether that’s through social media campaigns, educational webinars, or hands-on volunteering. It’s important to me to foster a culture of empathy and responsibility, encouraging others to recognize the value of advocacy not just as a passion but as a shared duty.

I see each day as an opportunity to build on what’s been accomplished, knowing that my individual efforts are part of a larger tapestry woven by countless advocates, volunteers, and pet lovers. The stories of transformation from frightened rescues blossoming into beloved companions, to communities rallying around animal-friendly initiatives remind me that collective action truly matters.

No matter where my career or personal journey leads, animal welfare remains at the heart of everything I do. My hope is to inspire others to join in, so that together, we can ensure a safer, kinder world for all creatures one paw at a time.
