Trial 2 Actor Pamela Bhutoria Singh: Vidya Balan & Kajol Embody Qualities of Shakti Devi | Exclusive

Actress Pamela Bhutoria Singh has carved a space for herself across Bengali cinema, Bollywood, and the OTT landscape. She was most recently seen in the second season of The Trial, where she shared the screen with Kajol. In conversation with Filmfare, Pamela reflected on her first day on the set with Kajol, the warmth and power of working alongside women like Vidya Balan (in Kahani) and Kajol, the pressures of navigating today’s social media-driven acting world, and the kind of stories that continue to draw her in.
You shared the screen with Kajol in The Trial 2. What was your first day with her like? How was her energy?

I remember being so nervous and excited on my first day. My very first shot was with her, and as I walked into the set and saw her, I was completely fangirling. She walked past me, and we exchanged looks. I think she wasn’t sure yet that I was the one playing Chitrangada. We finally met during the shot, and my director had to remind me, “You are this sassy, confident, and very smart individual who holds her own.” But there I was, acting like a little girl in awe.

What I’ll always remember about Kajol is her spirit. She’s so young at heart, full of life, and incredibly energetic. She laughs loudly, she’s kind, funny, and has this wonderfully high-spirited personality.

In the show, I played the “other woman”. The one who had a relationship with the man she liked. Off-screen, our chemistry was absolutely normal. Kajol was very nice and polite to me on set. There were no negative exchanges or emotions between us in the show, but her character was naturally a bit alarmed that someone else had entered Vishal’s life.
You have been a part of other good films as well. What’s your most vivid memory from that set with Vidya Balan?

Both Vidya Balan and Kajol are absolute powerhouses. Incredibly strong female leads. What they have in common is their kindness. They’re both very accommodating, aware of their power and position, and they use it beautifully. At the same time, they’re simple, grounded women — brilliant actors, accomplished individuals, and wonderful daughters. They embody all the qualities of Shakti Devi; powerful, enterprising, beautiful, and strong.

You’ve transitioned between Bengali cinema, Bollywood and OTT. What one digital-era skill do you think every actor now must master?

pamela
In today’s digital era, one skill every actor should master is self-promotion on social media. I personally lack the knack for editing videos, shooting the right content, or knowing exactly what to post. But unfortunately, it has become a necessary part of our profession now. I still believe that an actor’s talent should be judged by their performance — how well they deliver dialogues, embody a character, and act. Earlier, actors needed to know how to ride horses, perform action, sing, and dance — but now, sadly, mastering social media has become just as important.

How do you now choose roles that push beyond surface appeal into character depth?

I choose my roles based on the character — whether I resonate with it, and if I feel any emotion or empathy toward the person I’m portraying.

When you’re not acting, what kind of digital content do you personally love and consume?

When I’m not acting or working, I try to disconnect from digital content and go back to reading books, because I often find myself scrolling too much — something I absolutely dislike. I also listen to a lot of podcasts, especially on topics like health, body anatomy, and psychology.

What’s one performance of yours that you wish had gotten more attention?

Pamela Love she didn’t always love jewelry.

“In the beginning, I really didn’t like jewelry at all. My mother was a big jewelry person, but it was very basic jewelry,” Love said.

As love became a teenager, her mindset shifted and she began making jewelry out of anything she could find.

“I was making jewelry out of found objects and kind of finding clever ways to adorn myself,” Love said. “Maybe as an act of rebellion against what I thought was the cookie cutter idea of what jewelry is.”

Eventually, Love founded her eponymous line of jewelry in 2007 and the rest is history.

For the latest episode of The Who What Wear Podcast, Love shares how she got her start, what she thinks of some of her most iconic styles, whether you really can mix metals, and more.
