Travel without back pain: Tips for long flights, road trips, how to carry luggage and more

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of a new destination, the excitement of airports, and the open road ahead. But let’s be honest, the fun can quickly fade when your back starts acting up. Long flights in economy, hours on the road, or dragging heavy luggage can leave your spine aching, turning what should be a joyful experience into a discomfort-filled ordeal.

Top tips to help you avoid back pain while travelling

Dr Arun Bhanot, Director of Spine Surgery at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, gives practical tips for keeping back pain at bay while travelling. His advice is simple and actionable, perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy their trip without worrying about their spine.

1. Plan for comfort before you leave

Preparation makes all the difference. Wear supportive shoes and loose, comfortable clothing. Keep a lumbar pillow or back brace in your carry-on for easy access. On flights, choose seats with extra legroom if possible, and in cars, the front passenger seat gives more space to adjust and stretch.

2. Maintain good posture on long flights

Aeroplane seats are rarely kind to your spine. Use a rolled-up jacket or travel pillow behind your lower back to maintain natural alignment. Keep feet flat on the floor and avoid crossing legs. Adjust your seat angle periodically and try small stretches in your seat to prevent stiffness.

3. Move often

Remaining seated for long periods increases tension and pressure on your back. Stand up, walk along the aisle or stretch every 30 to 60 minutes. Shoulder rolls, ankle circles, and gentle back twists help keep muscles flexible and ready to move when you land.

4. Support your spine on road trips

Car journeys can be deceptively tough on the back. Adjust your seat so hips and knees are level, and use a cushion for lower back support if needed. Stop every hour to walk and stretch. Keep your hands comfortably on the wheel to avoid hunching or leaning forward.

5. Lift luggage smartly

Back strain often comes from lifting heavy bags incorrectly. Bend your knees, hold luggage close to your body, and avoid twisting while lifting. Wheeled suitcases, backpacks with padded straps, or dividing weight into multiple lighter bags can prevent unnecessary strain.

6. Use supportive travel gear

A lumbar cushion, neck pillow, or compression socks can make a surprising difference. For long trips, a small massage ball or portable heating pad helps release tight muscles during stops.

7. Stay hydrated and stretch

Dehydration worsens muscle tension, so drink water often. Gentle stretches for the hamstrings, hip flexors, and lower back counteract the effects of long periods of sitting and keep your body ready to move.

Travel doesn’t need to come with a sore back. With a few adjustments, mindful movement, and smart travel gear, you can enjoy your flights, road trips, and luggage handling comfortably, keeping your spine happy from start to finish.

Simple habits like good posture, regular stretching, and smart luggage choices can make all the difference. A little preparation ensures your back stays comfortable, leaving you free to focus on the joys of your trip.

Pregnant Elsie Hewitt in constant pain

15 November 2025

Elsie Hewitt has been in constant pain throughout her pregnancy.

Elsie Hewitt has been in constant pain while pregnant with Pete Davidson’s baby

The Dave star is expecting her first child with boyfriend Pete Davidson but the happy time has been tainted due to her discomfort, which she believes is because endometriosis – a reproductive condition where tissue grows outside of the uterus – is “heavily linked” to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a connective tissue disorder.

She said in a video shared to her Instagram Story: “I’ve been in pain since the very beginning and it’s just getting worse and worse.

“I’m in absolute agony pretty much 24/7. This morning, it’s really bad.”

Elsie explained she has attempted exercise, stretches, physical therapy, steroid injections, acupuncture and even energy healing in a bid to try and “manage the pain”, and urged her followers to offer her some “hope”.

She said: “At this point, if you can think of something that there is to do about the pain, I have tried it.

“I have tried everything, and it’s only getting worse and I cannot walk.

“I am just straight-up suffering and in so much pain every single day. I actually really don’t know how it could get worse than this…

“So, I’m turning to Instagram because I would really like to speak to someone who has been through pregnancy and birth with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Did your pain go away after? Does it get better? Am I gonna die?

“I just really want to feel a little bit of hope.”

The 29-year-old star previously admitted she was “convinced” she was infertile because of her struggles with endometriosis.

Explaining why she had surgery to tackle the condition, she told People magazine: “I was 100 percent convinced that I was infertile and not going to be able to have kids.

“A big part of why I opted for the surgery was, first and foremost, my symptoms, but second, to preserve my fertility or try to get to a place where I could sustain the chances of having a family one day.”

Elsie went on to admit she feels “very grateful” for the way her life has turned out and she is excited for Pete to become a dad, revealing he’s been taking good care of her throughout the pregnancy.

She said: “I think we’re going to be cool parents. I hope! I sometimes just see or feel the way that we are with one another, and I’m really glad and I’m really proud that this is how it is and this is how it’s going to be.

“I could not ask for a better father for my child. I’m so happy it’s him … I think he’s going to be such a good dad. I’m so excited to see it … “

Pete previously confessed he feels “so guilty and horrible” that Elsie is unable to go through an “ideal” pregnancy because of the public scrutiny they face as a couple in the spotlight.

Speaking on The Breakfast Club, he said: “I feel bad for my girl because I bring a lot of s***. “Anything I do or she does now is gonna be a thing.

“She’s a very private person and she’s the one doing all the work. It’s supposed to be a beautiful experience.

“She’s never made me feel this way or said anything, but I feel so guilty and horrible that I could not allow her to have the ideal pregnancy that almost every woman gets to have and enjoy.”

Long hours sitting at office causing back pain? Study suggests a simple routine that may bring relief

by jummy84 November 14, 2025

Does your lower back cramp up after sitting for long hours at the office? Desk-bound jobs usually involve very long hours sitting in one position. So it is no surprise when the body eventually protests, showing up with complaints in different ways, including weight gain or a severe backache. Back pain is one of the most immediate effects of prolonged sitting. This leaves many wondering how often they should stand, and if there’s any specific interval that lowers the pain better.

A study published in the journal of Applied Ergonomics put all the guesswork to rest by suggesting an interval that may help ease back pain more for office workers.

What did the study find?

The researchers wanted to identify which sit-stand routine alleviates back pain. They compared two methods. The first one was a fixed routine where everyone followed the same rule of 30 minutes sitting and 15 minutes standing. The second was personalised, which determined the person, choosing their own timing based on when their back aches.

The results showed that those who followed the 30:15 routine had reduced back pain and reported better concentration, lower stress. However, when the study participants followed their personalised timings, the improvements were very slight.

What does 30:15 sit-stand routine mean?

As per the findings, sitting for 30 minutes and then standing for 15 minutes was found to provide more substantial benefits. You may try to customise your own sit-stand routine at work, but it may not be as effective. A personalised routine typically involves deciding your own intervals, based on personal convenience or work commitment. For example, standing up and going for a walk, only after your presentation deck is complete, or when your back aches.

But here’s the catch: you may be inconsistent when you decide your own sit-stand interval. But when you follow a fixed routine, i.e, sitting for 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes of standing, it removes your guesswork as well. You have a structured plan, and even the results are better.

The Unspoken Pain: Arshad Warsi Reveals How His Mother’s Death Impacted Him! | Glamsham.com

Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi, in some of the most iconic roles in films like Munna Bhai MBBS, Jolly LLB, and the Golmaal series, has recently spoken about one of the most painful chapters of his life-the night his mother died. In an emotional podcasting session, the actor broke down as he revisited the traumatic memory that had continued to haunt him for decades.

Arshad revealed that he was just 14 years old when he lost both his parents within a short span of time. His mother, who was battling kidney failure and undergoing dialysis, spent her final moments asking for water. The doctors had strictly advised against giving her any, fearing complications due to her medical condition. “She kept asking for water, but I couldn’t give it to her,” Arshad recalled tearfully. “At that time, I thought I was doing the right thing by following the doctor’s advice. But now, I feel I should have given her that water — it was her last wish.”

The actor shared that losing his parents at such a tender age completely changed his life. From staying in a big, comfortable home, the situation of Arshad totally changed. He suddenly found himself having to take on responsibilities way beyond his years. “I tried to stay strong and be the man of the house,” he said. “But after holding it all in for weeks, one day I just broke down and cried. That was when it all really hit me.”

Despite the pain, Arshad turned his hardships into motivation. He worked tirelessly to support himself and gradually built his career in the film industry. However, the road was far from easy. Arshad admitted that in his early years, he accepted several film projects purely for financial reasons. One such project was Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani. “I did Jaani Dushman to make money for my home,” he confessed. “I even told the director to kill my character early on, but that didn’t happen.”

Paediatrician shares 7 signs of joint problems in kids every parent should know: ‘Pain that increases at night…’

Joint problems are generally thought to be a problem that shows up in older adults. But joint issues also occur in young kids. What’s most alarming is that often, serious signs of joint problems are confused with growing pains. Parents need to stay alert and know when to seek medical advice. Early detection of joint issues reduces the chances of complications.

Addressing the issue of joint health in kids, Dr Poonam Chhillar, Assistant Professor, Paediatrics, Shardacare Healthcity, shared with HT Lifestyle the signs that necessitate a doctor visit because they are serious.

“While it’s typical for parents to call occasional joint pain in children ‘growing pains,’ that may be true, but it’s important to know when it could actually be something different,” Dr Chhillar warned about the habit of parents dismissing children’s joint problems.

The paediatrician explained that growing pains are common in children between the ages of 3 and 12, and are usually dull. They do not include serious signs like swelling, limping or redness. They could also be sports injuries. But one more serious root cause, Dr Chhillar highlighted: Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. This happens when inflammation rises in the joints.

7 warning signs parents should know

Joint pain, when left untreated, may get aggravated. Dr Chhillar said, “While mild joint pain or strain can be treated with rest and warm compresses, some symptoms should never be ignored.” Often, non-serious pain goes away with a warm compress, but when certain signs persist, they indicate underlying issues like inflammation or juvenile arthritis.

“Waiting too long to see a doctor could increase your child’s risk of developing chronic problems, joint damage or disability,” the paediatrician reminded the cost of delaying medical attention.

Here are the 7 signs she shared:

1. Persistent joint pain or swelling

  • Joint pain or swelling that is worsening or lasts longer than a week can be a sign of inflammation.
  • It is especially more prominent with large joints like the knee.

2. Stiffness in the morning

  • Difficulty getting out of bed
  • Stiffness after naps
  • Feeling awkward after sitting for a long time.

3. Limping or altered use of a limb

  • Any newly apparent limp
  • Reluctance to bear weight
  • Decreased range of motion in a joint

4. Bone pain that increases at night

  • Bone pain that is severe enough to wake the child from sleep.

5. Spontaneous fracture without injury or trauma:

  • Fractures that occur without a known cause may indicate underlying weakness or a metabolic bone disease.

6. Systemic symptoms:

These are symptoms of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), or another inflammatory or infectious process:

  • Joint pain with fever
  • Unexplained rash
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss

7. Redness or warmth over the joint:

These signs reveal inflammation or infection:

2 things children need to follow

The paediatrician advised parents to ensure good nutrition and an active lifestyle so that children develop healthy bones and joints.

She named two nutrients that support bone health. “Make sure your child is getting enough Calcium and Vitamin D, which are essential for healthy bones.”

If a child is overweight, their bones bear more strain, making it very important to be active and maintain a healthy weight.

Dr Chhillar suggested, “Promote different forms of physical activity—weight-bearing exercise, stretching and play. Managing weight is also important as excess weight puts additional strain on developing bones and joints.”

Charlie Kaplan 2025

Charlie Kaplan Wrings a Masterpiece Out of Love, Pain, and Loss » PopMatters

by jummy84 October 17, 2025
written by jummy84

The title of Charlie Kaplan’s latest album stems from an episode involving his father, who was being visited in the hospital by a longtime friend. When his friend laid his baseball cap on Charlie‘s father’s bed, the usually polite–but–superstitious elder Kaplan was abruptly shocked. “In old cowboy movies,” he said, in a story recounted by Charlie himself in the press notes, “a hat on the bed is an omen, a premonition that someone will die”.

Indeed, A Hat Upon the Bed is a tribute to Kaplan’s father, who passed away in 2013, as well as to his son, born in 2025. This “fatherless decade” between those two events was a source of love and pain, which Kaplan has used as inspiration for this, perhaps his most personal and brutally honest work. The record’s core band consists of Winston Cook-Wilson (Kaplan’s bandmate in Office Culture) on keyboards, Andrew Daly Frank on lead guitar, Julian Cubillos on bass, and Jason Burger on drums. These are longtime friends and collaborators of Kaplan’s and can navigate his eclectic songs with ease.

A Hat Upon the Bed is, according to Kaplan, about “the line between the knowable and unknowable; truth and superstition; science and magic; natural and supernatural; life and death”. Kaplan may not have the answers, but he enjoys pondering them, and the unknowingness of death and the unshakable bonds of love result in some beautiful, open-ended music. The record begins and ends with brief instrumental tracks: “Seaside” on acoustic guitar and “Sandy” on piano. These songs are small sonic morsels that beautifully bookend the LP.

The title track begins the album proper as an airy, ethereal folk piece on love and loss, supported by Zosha Warpeha on five-string viola and Kristen Drymala on cello, players who appear on several songs and are arranged sublimely by Cook-Wilson. “Begging forgiveness from no one,” Kaplan sings. “And slipping away / Down leafy street corners / There’s always more we can say.” One of Kaplan’s many strengths as a songwriter and arranger is his innate ability to seamlessly transition between different subgenres, making it seem effortless.

“Halley”, inspired by Kaplan’s father’s habit of gazing at the stars on their front stoop, is a gauzy slab of melodic shoegaze, while “Fear of Choking” is a low-key baroque pop gem that brings to mind the sophisticated songcraft of Paul McCartney. The piano-driven “Leading Man” sounds like an earworm straight out of a 1970s AM radio. “Transmission,” meanwhile, amps up the surrealism, with an open-ended, rudderless feel that you want to get lost in long past its five-and-a-half-minute run time.

Kaplan makes numerous excellent choices, often venturing into unique territory. Much like “Mescarole”, on his 2024 album Eternal Repeater, the straightforward “I’m In Love with You” is based around a very brief lyric couplet (“It’s true, I’m in love with you / What am I gonna do?”) as the band swirls around him in an intoxicating Wall of Sound production style. Kaplan is obviously a fan of rock and roll in its purest form. You can almost hear Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers loping their way through the easy groove of “No More Mistakes”, which features more of those irresistible strings.

Elsewhere, Kaplan seems to broach the subject of the climate crisis with the loping, tuneful “Is It Gonna Be Alright”, acknowledging specific fears in the verses, and expressing a quizzical tone in the chorus: “All of this is going away / But it’s alright now / Living for another day / But it’s alright now.” The directness of the hypnotic “No Way Am I” sparks an occasionally angry tone, as he sings “I know you go so far up your own ass / You didn’t know how I grew up so fast.”

One of the record’s emotional high points, however, is probably the sweet, heartfelt “Heaven”, performed by Kaplan on vocals on acoustic guitar. It’s a simple arrangement, but Kaplan’s emotions are elegant and heartfelt in the lyrics, where he acknowledges his deep love for his son, or perhaps his father, or both? “I could never tell you how much I loved you,” Kaplan sings. “Even if I had a million years / So it was just a matter of time before I lost you / If it was a needle in a haystack I’d die trying to find it / Give away all may days in pursuit / I won’t mind it.”

It’s no surprise that A Hat Upon the Bed is a double album. Charlie Kaplan has so much to unload that chronicles that “fatherless decade”. He’s always been a master of creating the perfect arrangement around his engaging, deeply felt compositions, but this time around, he’s at his absolute peak. A Hat Upon the Bed is a towering, emotionally honest work of art.

Arthritis is a musculoskeletal condition, impacting the joints. It causes pain, making movement difficult. Here are some dietary choices that may help.

Arthritis affects joints significantly, causing pain during movement. This significantly affects daily functioning. It is one of the most common musculoskeletal issues people face. As per a World Health Organization report from 2023, in 2019 alone, 528 million people around the world were afflicted with osteoarthritis, and by 2025, the number’s only gone up.

Diet is one of the ways to manage chronic pain. Dr Dheeraj Batheja, consultant – orthospine, orthopaedics and spine surgery at Artemis Hospitals, told HT Lifestyle that the diet helps to lower the inflammation.

He said, “Medications help with symptoms, but diet is very important for lowering inflammation and keeping joints healthy. Some foods have nutrients that can help lower inflammation, protect cartilage and make joints work better overall.”

In fact, one of the major benefits of improving your dietary choices is improved mobility. “ People with arthritis may have less pain, be able to move more easily and be healthier overall if they choose their food carefully,” Dr Batheja added.

The doctor identified 5 key food groups that support joint health. He categorised them based on the nutritional profile. Some are essential macronutrients like protein, while others are micronutrients like healthy fats. A well-rounded diet lowers the inflammation level and mitigates pain.

Here are the 5 groups of food Dr Batheja suggested:

1. Foods rich in Omega-3

  • Chia seeds, flaxseeds, and fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines are all good sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • These good fats help reduce swelling and inflammation in the joints, which makes it easier to move and less stiff.

2. Low-fat protein sources

  • Vitamin C and beta-carotene are two examples of antioxidants that are found in berries, oranges, spinach and broccoli.
  • These help get rid of harmful free radicals, which cut down on joint damage and swelling.

4. Whole grains

Nicole Kidman on Overcoming Pain Amid Keith Urban Split

by jummy84 October 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Nicole Kidman has come to this place with wisdom.

Less than two weeks after filing for divorce from Keith Urban following 19 years of marriage, the AMC Theaters brand ambassador, 58, detailed why her favorite aspect of growing older has been learning how to handle whatever life throws at her.

“The best part is the experiences that you’ve accumulated,” Nicole told Harper’s Bazaar in an interview published Oct. 9. “You go, ‘Oh, I’ve been here before. I actually know how to handle this now.’ Or, ‘Maybe I haven’t been in this place, but I’ve experienced something similar to this, and I do know that I will get through it.’”

The Practical Magic actress added, “There’s something to knowing that no matter how painful, or how difficult, or how devastating something is, there is a way through.”

And while Nicole feels equipped to persevere through anything, she is aware that pain is part of the growing process.

Vascular surgeon warns chronic leg pain and numbness can be a sign of blocked arteries, shares 6 symptoms of PAD

by jummy84 October 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Many people dismiss recurring leg pain or cramps as a normal part of aging, especially when the discomfort fades after resting. But experts warn that this pattern – pain that comes with activity and eases with rest – can be an early sign of underlying conditions like Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). Ignoring these signals may allow the condition to progress, increasing the risk of serious complications.

Chronic leg pain could point towards Peripheral Artery Disease, according to Dr Sumit Kapadia.(Pixabay)

Dr Sumit Kapadia, a vascular surgeon and varicose vein specialist with 18 years of experience, is raising awareness about the early warning signs of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), which includes chronic leg pain. In an Instagram video posted on September 2, he outlines six early warning signs in the legs that may indicate PAD and emphasises that recognising them promptly can help prevent serious complications later.

Leg pain isn’t just ‘getting older’

Dr Kapadia shares an anecdote about a gentleman who paid a visit to his clinic due to pain in his legs, and said, “Doctor, I thought it was just age catching up with me. My legs hurt when I walked, but the pain went away when I rested. I ignored it for months.” When examined, it wasn’t simply age – it was blocked arteries in his legs. Many people assume arterial blockages only affect the heart, but the legs often give early warning signs. Ignoring them can have serious consequences.

Early warning signs

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a condition where arteries in the arms and legs narrow due to plaque buildup, from fats, cholesterol, and other substances, reducing blood flow, according to Mayo Clinic. Detecting it early is crucial, as it allows for interventions that can sometimes prevent surgery. Here are six symptoms listed by Dr Kapadia:

Pain or cramps while walking

Cramping or aching in the legs during walking that subsides with rest is often an early warning sign of blocked arteries, according to Dr Kapadia.

Numbness or weakness

The surgeon mentions that reduced blood flow resulting from Peripheral Artery Disease can lead to numbness or weakness in the legs.

One leg feels colder

Temperature differences between legs may indicate restricted circulation, says the surgeon.

Slow-healing wounds

Cuts, blisters, or sores on the feet that take unusually long to heal can be a red flag.

Shiny skin or loss of hair

Dr Kapadia mentions that changes in skin texture, thinning hair, or a shiny appearance on the legs may suggest compromised blood flow.

Weak pulse

Dr Kapadia suggests that if you notice a reduced, or weaker pulse in the lower limbs, it may signal potential arterial blockage due to PAD.
