Kiran Rao on star kids vs outsiders: ‘Nepo kids’ have the obstacle of perception

The debate around the rising cost of entourage has taken over the Hindi film industry, and director Kiran Rao admits the high cost of teams is one of the reasons that pushes her tow work with newcomers. She launched three new actors–Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta and Sparsh Shrivastava–with Laapataa Ladies last year, and she asserts that they came without any such baggage.

“Organically, they just fit the scenario of an independent film and I make films that way. Even if the budgets have grown from Dhobi Ghat to Laapataa Ladies, in spirit, my filmmaking is very independent, the idea being that everybody on set is treated kind of equally. We believe in having fair working hours, but making things as tightly as possible, with as few resources and trying not to be wasteful. Fresh actors are much easier following those rules,” she says.

Having launched three outsiders with her film and seen her ex-husband, actor Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan, make their acting debuts around the same time, did she see any difference in the audience’s perception towards them? “When you have a so-called ‘nepo kid’ coming into the industry, they have a certain kind of baggage that they cannot avoid. They are constantly looked at through the lens of privilege, that they are getting there with all the kinds of shortcuts that other kids don’t have. I understand that but in most cases, now that I know so many film families, I’ve seen how hard and equally difficult sometimes their journey is. The obstacles that they have are different, they may not be worse or better, but they are the obstacles of perception,” she responds.

Elaborating further, Kiran Rao says, “In the case of any other new actor, there is no perception of you and people are willing to grow with you, understand your strengths and love you for your weaknesses. Whereas they come at a nepo kid with a different set of perceptions and expectations. So those are the things that any child from a film family has to deal with. Ultimately, your work will speak for itself and many times, it takes a film family child, many films in order to become successful. That’s the journey of most star kids in front of the camera.”

Ask her if she feels it’s actually easier for an outsider to make a mark in the film industry than a star kid, and Kiran answers in the affirmative. “I actually agree with it. I also feel that in today’s world people want to discover talent. They don’t like to be told that this person is there. They have a curiosity about stars and their children, but in order to make a person a star, they feel a responsibility,” she says.

However, Kiran highlights a much important issue. “Honestly, the conversation here to talk about is the death of stardom in some ways. There is no star system today. Stars are now being found in different ways. It’s in people with a following, who the audience look forward to seeing. They could come from a Reel, a series, a film, or it could even be a director. Those are the new stars, whose work is being followed more closely and sometimes it won’t be somebody even you and I know because everybody has their own little sort of echo chambers and following. That’s now the new world, the idea of stardom has changed,” she ends.

Model-turned-actor Muzammil Ibrahim, best known for his role in Special Ops Season 2, recently shared shocking details about his early days in Bollywood and accused Pooja Bhatt of mistreating him. The actor, who first gained fame after winning the Gladrags Manhunt Contest in 2003, started his career as a model before featuring in popular music videos, including the hit track Pardesiya with Rakhi Sawant. At just 21, he made his Bollywood debut in Pooja Bhatt’s directorial film Dhokha in 2007. However, Muzammil revealed that the experience left him emotionally scarred.

In an interview, Muzammil alleged that working with Pooja Bhatt was “torturous” and described the film’s environment as highly toxic. “I had never experienced such abuse before. It was mentally exhausting and left me traumatized for years. I was the sole breadwinner for my family, so I couldn’t walk away despite the harassment,” he revealed. The actor further explained that while the crew was supportive, he faced harassment directly from the director.

Despite being offered three more films by the Bhatt camp, including Raaz 2, directed by Mohit Suri, Muzammil declined due to the painful memories of his debut experience. “When I refused their projects, they tried to damage my reputation in the media. Articles were planted to portray me as difficult to work with,” he claimed. Muzammil accused Pooja Bhatt of mistreating outsiders and breaking their confidence.

“They expect actors to behave like sycophants. I refused to bow down, and I paid the price,” he said. He also alleged discrimination on set, stating that insiders were treated like “children,” while newcomers like him were unfairly judged. The ordeal had lasting effects on Muzammil’s mental health. “It scarred me deeply. I developed insomnia because of that trauma, and I still struggle with it,” he admitted.

Shilpa Shetty Slammed By Netizens For ‘I Don’t Allow Outsiders For Shoot, It Gives Negativity’ Comment

Bollywood’s well-known director-choreographer, Farah Khan, is currently winning hearts on YouTube with her quirky cooking vlogs, which she shoots alongside her cook, Dilip. In these fun-filled videos, Farah not only whips up mouth-watering dishes but also adds a dash of entertainment by visiting her celebrity friends’ homes or sometimes inviting them over to hers. However, her recent episode featuring actress Shilpa Shetty has stirred quite a buzz online.

Shilpa Shetty And Farah Khan

Let us tell you that Farah visited Shilpa Shetty’s residence as part of the vlog, but what caught viewers’ attention was Shilpa’s repeated remarks about not allowing “outsiders” to shoot inside her house. The actress clarified that she usually refrains from giving permission for shoots at home, but made an exception this time. This did not sit well with many fans, who felt that Shilpa’s constant insistence sounded cold and unwelcoming towards Farah.

Farah, on the other hand, took it sportingly. She revealed that her own home has practically turned into “Ramoji Studio” due to continuous shoots and content creation. She also added that to maintain some privacy, she never lets anyone upstairs, restricting guests to the lower level. During the vlog, Shilpa explained that she made this rare exception purely out of affection for Farah and to support her husband Raj Kundra’s film promotion.

Despite the light-hearted banter, netizens were quick to react. Some criticized Shilpa’s behavior, calling it disrespectful to repeatedly emphasize not letting outsiders in. One comment read, “This is an insult to a guest. If not for film promotion, she would never have allowed it.” Another sarcastically remarked, “She talks about positive energy at home, but if that was true, her husband wouldn’t be involved in such controversies.” While Shilpa’s remarks divided opinions, the vlog managed to do what Farah always intends i.e. spark conversations, serve entertainment, and keep fans hooked with celebrity camaraderie.
