No Kings Organizers Call for Spotify Boycott Over ICE Ads

Non-profit organization Indivisible Project, one of the organizers behind the No Kings protests, has called for a Spotify boycott in response to the music streamer running ICE recruitment ads on its platform.

In a blog post titled “Don’t Stream Fascism,” Indivisible wrote, “Spotify is running ads recruiting agents for ICE, the federal agency charged with mass deportation and surveillance of immigrant communities. These ads target vulnerable populations, promise signing bonuses, and normalize fear and intimidation in our neighborhoods.”

The boycott urges Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek, along with incoming co-CEOs Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström, to immediately “terminate all ICE and DHS advertising contracts,” update its advertising policy to “prohibit government propaganda and hate-based recruitment campaigns,” and commit to “defending civil rights and standing up for communities under threat from authoritarian actions.”

Until then, Indivisible is calling on listeners and artists to cancel their Spotify subscriptions, peacefully protest outside the company’s offices, studios, or major events, and urge artists, podcasters, and labels to publicly denounce the ads.

Earlier this month, Spotify said it would continue running the ICE ads as part of the US government’s broad television, streaming, and online campaign, reasoning that the content did not violate advertising policies. Similar advertising has appeared on YouTube, HBO Max, and Hulu in recent months.

Spotify had already faced boycotts after reports that Ek has a financial stake in the AI defense company Helsing. Artists who have pulled their catalogs include Massive Attack, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and Deerhoof.

John Stamos Appears at Riot Fest After Organizers’ 12-Year Pursuit

by jummy84 September 21, 2025

A dozen years after organizers failed to book fictional Full House band Jesse and the Rippers in 2013, the actor finally takes the Riot Fest stage via the Beach Boys

John Stamos finally made his debut at Chicago’s Riot Fest on Saturday, performing alongside the Beach Boys in an appearance that was a dozen years in the making.

Organizers had been pursuing Stamos since 2013, when they first offered a set to the actor’s fictional Full House band Jesse and the Rippers. The overtures became increasingly more aggressive and madcap: A statue of Stamos made out of butter, dubbed “Butter Stamos,” was constructed, while additional headline-grabbing stunts — like a John Stamos art show in 2017 — were staged in subsequent years to grab the actor’s attention.

Earlier this summer, Riot Fest revealed that they had finally found a loophole to force Stamos to visit the festival: By recruiting the Beach Boys, who currently employ the actor as a touring member. Stamos “begrudgingly” accepted the invite.

However, Stamos dictated a list of outlandish demands in August in order to secure his participation: Riot Fest founder Riot Mike must get a tattoo of the actor (which he did last month), a local Chicago pizza place must offer a Greece-themed pie, a Stamos lookalike contest, Stamos-approved merch, a festival-wide mandate that no one make eye contact with his hair, etc.

With his demands met, Stamos finally took the Riot Fest stage on Saturday. “WE DID IT,” the festival exclaimed on social media.

Trending Stories

In addition to performing with the Beach Boys, the actor partook in many of the Stamos-themed festivities, including posing alongside “Butter Stamos” and wearing merch bearing his own name.

Stamos later shared his own post on social media featuring highlights from his long-awaited day at the festival. “‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ if I went to Riot Fest?” he quipped.

US Open Organizers Want TV To Ignore Trump Protests Sunday

Reaction to Donald Trump‘s attendance at the U.S. Open Men’s Final on Sunday just stepped into Center Court.

A memo sent to the likes of ESPN and Sky Sports this afternoon from the United States Tennis Association asks “all broadcasters to refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions in response to the President’s attendance in any capacity.”

Whether censorship, a very heavy handed request for civility amidst political division, both or an unintentional shooting of their own foort, the USTA entreaty Saturday has had the immediate effect now of putting an added spotlight on Trump’s appearance at the prestigious match.

Shown on ABC, ESPN Unlimited and other platforms of the sports giant, the dramatic battle between Carlos Alcaraz (who won the U.S. Open title in 2022) and Jannik Sinner (who won Wimbledon two months ago) is set to start at 11 am PT/2 pm ET.

According to guidance from the White House, Trump will be in the stadium at that time. He is expected to be front and center on Arthur Ashe Stadium’s giant video screen during the national anthem. Unlikely to be talking tariffs by any measure, Trump is at the match as a guest of Rolex.

When contacted by Deadline, ESPN had no comment on the USTA correspondence. However, indications from insiders at the Disney outlet is that they will be concentrating their coverage on the tennis but not ignore Trump or his presence. That last part may be the wiggle room Disney, who paid then president-elect Trump over $15 million back in December to in a much derided move to settle his defamation suit against ABC News and anchor  George Stephanopoulos, occupies to turn the cameras on or off any jeers, banners or more that break out at Sunday’s match

For USTA, who have seen a constant stream of high profile attendees like Common, Walton Goggins, Hugh Jackman, Anna Wintour, Naomi Watts, the Great One Wayne Gretzky and the G.O.A.T. Billie Jean King, at this year’s U.S. Open, the attitude is this is all business as usual – just bigger. “We regularly ask our broadcasters to refrain from showcasing off-court disruptions,” USTA Managing Director, Head of Communications and Content Lisa Cradit told Deadline tonight.

Certainly, Trump showing up at other sporting events recently like July 13’s FIFA Club World Cup final at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium and February at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans resulted in a bellow of boos. In the latter case, which saw Taylor Swift booed too, there were cheers for the former Celebrity Apprentice host. The same couldn’t be said of the last time Trump showed up at Arthur Ashe Stadium for the U.S. Open in 2015 — then the boos far out blasted any positive response.

Will history repeat itself?

Well, there is some precedent of recurrence at the U.S. Open this year.

Having won in 2024, Aryna Sabalenka remains the U.S. Open’s women’s champion. The Belarusian player defeated  Amanda Anisimova in straight sets earlier today. Sabalenka was applauded and received a standing ovation for her hard fought second consecutive Ashe victory.

Vampire Weekend Call Out Victorious Festival Organizers After Mary Wallopers Set Cut Short

by jummy84 August 25, 2025

On Friday, August 22, Irish folk band the Mary Wallopers had their set at Portsmouth, England’s Victorious Festival cut short after flying the Palestinian flag onstage and leading a chant of “free Palestine.” Several artists, including the Last Dinner Party, subsequently pulled out of their scheduled performances in protest, and now Vampire Weekend, who are among this year’s headliners, have called out the festival’s organizers.

As reported by Portsmouth News, Ezra Koenig addressed the crowd during Vampire Weekend’s set last night (Saturday, August 23). “If someone was punished for flying a flag, that is wrong and they deserve an apology,” Koenig said. “The terrible suffering of the Palestinian people deserves all of our sympathy.”

Writing to NME, representatives for Victorious originally claimed to have cut off the Mary Wallopers’ sound because they “used a chant which is widely understood to have a discriminatory context.” The band then responded with their own statement alongside footage of the stage during their set: “The festival have released a misleading statement to the press claiming they cut our sound because of a discriminatory chant and not the band’s call to Free Palestine.”

The statement continues: “Our video clearly shows a Victorious crew member coming on stage, interfering with our show, removing the flag from the stage and then the sound being cut following a chant of “Free Palestine.” The same crew member is later heard in the video saying “you aren’t playing until the flag is removed.” Victorious Festival then released a second statement apologizing to the band. Read both in full below.

In June, British punk-rap duo Bob Vylan had their U.S. visas revoked after a controversial Glastonbury set where frontman Bobby Vylan led the crowd in a chant of “Death, death to the IDF.” Irish rap trio Kneecap, whose performance at Coachella 2025 featured pro-Palestine and anti-Israel messages, have since been removed from the lineup of Glasgow’s TRNSMT music festival, banned from Hungary, and had one of their members, Mo Chara, charged with a terror offense for allegedly displaying the Hezbollah flag during a 2024 concert. Both groups are currently being investigated by British police following their sets at Glastonbury this year.
