‘Sirat’ Director Oliver Laxe on His Stealth Oscar Entry

by jummy84 November 13, 2025

Just as “Sirāt” is a twisty thriller that takes you unexpected places on its tragic journey into the dystopian desert unknown, the heady filmmaker behind it, Oliver Laxe, is not your average interview. His fourth European feature, “Sirāt” is his breakout: It wowed critics at Cannes, shared the Jury prize, and won the Cannes Soundtrack Award for Best Composer for Kangding Ray.

Neon picked up “Sirāt” as one of the company’s five international features vying for a slot in the final Oscar five. I’ll wager the movie will wow the stateside arthouse box office as it has France and Spain and four other countries (worldwide gross: $9 million). Audiences have never seen anything like it. (IndieWire’s critics poll voted “Sirāt” the best film in Cannes.)

This shocking piece of cinema is best left undiscussed. The less you know about it going in, the better. The French-Spanish-Galician filmmaker is begging folks not to share its secrets.

For context, the movie starts at a rave in North Africa: Huge speakers amplify the booming beat against looming cliffs as ravers dance in delirious abandon. Winding through the crowd is a Spanish father (Sergi López), his son, and his dog. They are doggedly searching for their missing daughter/sister, who has left home to follow rave culture. As the military arrives and shuts down the rave and directs traffic away, the family jumps into their car to follow a caravan into the mountains. They befriend a small commune of nomadic ravers seeking their next high. Somewhere in the distance, a war is raging. As the group drives into more rigorous and remote areas, they band together to survive the obstructions coming their way.

We met at Neon’s offices in New York, as Laxe, 43, sincerely lays out his filmmaking philosophy. “For me, the ontology of cinema [is] images,” he said. “If a film is connecting with people, it is because, in my films, in terms of proportions, there is a spiritual geometry in my images. They are connected with my unconscious and with the collective unconscious.”

Why is the movie reaching so many audiences? “The film is a medicine,” he said. “Sometimes, when it doesn’t taste good, we put honey on the edge of the glass [so that] it’s sweeter. People think the film is sexy, for the music, the techno. A lot of young people are coming in France, youngsters are watching, are connected with the film. That was one of my intentions: to make a film for young audiences, to invite them to come to the film theater.”

No question, Laxe takes his filmmaking seriously, on many levels. During the writing and pre-production process, he struggles to be strong enough to protect his fragility, he said, so that “the images arrive alive at the end in the edit process. I’m sorry to say, but most images, nowadays in cinema, they have too much weight, because images are used to say something, to tell something. And they don’t. They are not alive anymore.”

'Sirât'

The reason “Sirāt” has so much force: “Our images can penetrate the human metabolism because they are still not domesticated,” he said. “Filmmakers have to know where, when to stop. We have to stop at the right time in order to not put too much weight into the images. And David Lynch was an expert on this: He’s still the guy who knew how to keep this unconscious imagery, all our fears, all our desires, all our dreams, all our nightmares. I’m making sorcery like him.”

Of course, Laxe studied “The Wages of Fear” and “Sorcerer” when preparing to shoot his hazardous North African road movie. But the movie is more than just road scares. “‘Sirāt’ has three dimensions,” he said. “The physical dimension, the physical adventure. That’s where these films and ‘Mad Max’ are dialoguing with ‘Sirāt,’ or we are dialoguing with them. We were joking that we were making ‘Mad Max Zero,’ the pre-apocalypse. But these films, they are not much existential or transcendental.”

That brings the next dimension. “There is another layer that is existential,” he said. “And for this dimension, we were inspired about American movies from the ’70s: “Vanishing Point,” “Two Lane Blacktop,” “Apocalypse Now,” “Easy Rider.” All these films, we don’t know what they are about, but they were expressing the fears and the desire of the American society in the ’70s, and we can feel all the energy of this decade, the angst. This is powerful. That’s why we want to make films: We want to be connected with our time.”

And the third dimension? “That is the more metaphysical,” said Laxe. “For me, obviously, my master is [Andrei] Tarkovsky, and in particular, for ‘Sirāt,’ was ‘Stalker’ and ‘Nostalgia.’”

“Sirāt” is filmed in Super 16mm. “Chemistry,” he said. “My purpose is to make images that will be with a spectator after watching the film for a long time. It’s better to work with this alchemy. Obviously, after the film, art is digitalized … a digital image can also penetrate a spectator, but not at the same level. There is imperfection. It. Art is about mistakes.”

The sound design, meanwhile, is extraordinary, especially at the start of the film, when Laxe mounts a rave in the desert, surrounded by massive cliffs. “I discovered that I’m a musician making this film. For the first time I had the opportunity to work with a musician, Kangding Ray, before the shooting for one year and a half. We went to shoot with most of the music. The idea was to build a sound landscape, to watch the sound and to hear the image.”

After living in Morocco for more than a decade, Laxe absorbed his surroundings. “I see all this landscape, with all this erosion, all this violence,” he said. “This erosion is made by the snow, by the wind. We feel small. In ‘Sirāt,’ it works like this. We are in the mountain, so we feel that we are small. We are nothing, and we go to the desert. The mountain in Morocco is existentialist. ‘Who am I, what I’m doing here? I will die. I’m nothing.’ The desert is this abstract space where human beings cannot hide ourselves. We have to look inside. We look to the sky.”

As the caravan climbs into more precarious terrain, they have to overcome each obstacle thrown their way. Laxe loves to shoot in nature, “not because nature is beautiful,” he said. “It’s because nature is a manifestation of this creative intelligence that is behind things, call it God. So to shoot in nature, nature is manifesting. I like limits, as a human being, as a filmmaker. I like to be tested by nature, because I like to surrender myself to this, because I know that even if it shakes me, it is taking care of me. Life doesn’t give you what you are looking for. No, life gives you what you need. And there is a difference between one and the other, and that’s why human beings are, from time to time, frustrated. That’s why filmmaking is frustrating, because we are looking for something. But life is shaking you, giving you what you need. That’s why my films are really risky.”

In order to cast the film’s motley crew, Laxe turned not only to lauded actor Lopez, but some non-pros, friends he’s known for years. “Bigui [Richard Bellamy] was a friend from 15 years ago,” he said. “He’s on the script since the beginning when I’m writing. He’s a poet. He’s a Peter Pan. He lost his hand three years before the shooting. I had doubts if I [would] shoot him or not, because we already had someone who doesn’t have legs. I don’t like when you feel the intentions of the filmmaker: The filmmaker has to hide the proof of the crime. So I was afraid of having two people with deficiencies… At the end, I accepted that. I mean, I love them. I wanted them on my film. So I assume the consequences. It worked. It’s life who wanted them on the film, because at the end, it’s a film about the wound, about the pain of the war today.”

By using non-actors who have endured the vicissitudes of the world, Laxe didn’t have to develop the characters in a conventional way. “People watch too [many] series, so they are used to how the characters, the plots are developed,” he said. “But I don’t need this. My images say things and evoke things. I don’t need to develop the characters. You feel their gesture, their silence, their scars. Do you feel their wound exactly? You feel their soul. What else do you want we express about them?”

“Sirāt” feels like a message from the future. At the end of the film, a train appears, carrying refugees across the arid landscape. “This train is the future,” said Laxe, “[carrying] human beings, from different regions and races. We will go on the same train; we will be pushed. It’s difficult for us to change. The only hope is that life will oblige us to change. Life will push us to a limit, to an edge that we will be obliged to ask ourselves, ‘What is it to be human? Climate change, artificial intelligence, what is it to be human?’ The answer will be: more human. I have a lot of hope.”

Neon will release “Sirāt” in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, November 14.

John Oliver Bids Adieu To ‘Deeply Weird’ Eric Adams, Welcomes Mamdani

by jummy84 November 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Last Week Tonight honored its native New York City as John Oliver conducted an audit of Eric Adams‘s scandal-ridden mayoralty — and welcomed recently minted mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, an introduction that led to resounding cheers from the live audience.

As Oliver discussed Mamdani’s triumphant speech — which he characterized as an “entirely earned victory lap” and “pretty satisfying” — he noted that some, such as CNN’s Van Jones, critiqued the words as “sharp” and a “character switch.”

“He just weathered one of the most Islamophobic campaigns in recent memory,” the late-night host countered. “‘I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private live’ is a frankly superhuman level of grace to extend to a man who has yet to pronounce your name correctly once.”

After concluding his story for the night — on how America’s singular felony murder laws exacerbate mass incarceration — Oliver returned to the topic of his show’s home city, delivering a eulogy of sorts for the outgoing Adams administration, scheduled to depart Jan. 1.

Calling the leadup to the NYC mayoral election “truly insane from start to finish” — as best exemplified by a viral debate question concerning parades — Oliver mulled over the fact that one local news segment couldn’t locate a single resident to express disappointment in Adams dropping out of the race.

“They couldn’t find anyone! This city has 8 million people. I’m a 1000% sure I could find someone who would vote for a pigeon fucking a bagel in Central Park, but no takers for Eric Adams — that has got to hurt,” he quipped.

In offering “one last look at Eric Adams because he is a deeply weird man,” the political comic paid homage to Adams’s amusing flag-raising ceremonies, in which he has repeatedly stated that New York is the [insert given nation’s capital city] of America.

Though Adams began as a popular candidate with an over 60% approval rating, his stats dropped over 40% in the span of two years. Oliver outlined “the true hallmark of the Adams administration was its constant scandals,” going over a laundry list of corruption, bribery and conspiracy charges faced by a number of admin officials.

“This is a great city, but that is not because of you [Adams] and sometimes it is in active spite of you,” Oliver concluded. “You know, if I could sum up Eric Adams’s mayoralty in one word, it’d probably be: New York, because this is a place where every day you wake up you can experience a plane crashing into our Trade Center, to a fake vegan, non-Alabaman leaving a ghost-filled Gracie Mansion to lecture all of us on family, business, public safety and, of course, clitoral stimulation.”

And though Oliver made sure to include the “soundbite bonanza” that was Republican Curtis Sliwa’s campaign — from his anecdotes about his historical clashes with organized crime to his shots at Andrew Cuomo — the host did forget one gem from the Adams administration: his much-memed, bizarre anti-drug PSA video.

John Oliver Mocks Trump for Posting Photos of Remodeled Bathroom

by jummy84 November 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Amid the government shutdown, President Donald Trump posted photos of a newly remodeled bathroom.

On Friday, Trump shared a couple dozen photos of a renovated bathroom that is connected to the Lincoln Bedroom.

“I renovated the Lincoln Bathroom in the White House,” he wrote on Truth Social. “It was renovated in the 1940s in an art deco green tile style, which was totally inappropriate for the Lincoln Era. I did it in black and white polished Statuary marble. This was very appropriate for the time of Abraham Lincoln and, in fact, could be the marble that was originally there!”

On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver echoed critics of the president, noting: “That is pretty tone-deaf. And you know what? I will say to Trump what I said while watching David Harbour’s Architectural Digest video: ‘You are vastly overestimating how much I care about where you take a shit.’”

Added Oliver: “It is odd to be posting bathroom remodel photos when so many are legitimately concerned about getting the government open again.” The government shutdown, which started Oct. 1, will break a record for the longest shutdown if it continues until Tuesday.

The bathroom isn’t the only remodel Trump has ordered in the White House. He’s also overseeing a demolition project on the East Wing so that he can construct a $250 million ballroom.

Oliver previously weighed in on that project after photos surfaced of the construction: “Those images are distressing, especially when you know it’s all to build a giant ballroom in a style best described as ‘Med Spa Versailles.’ ” He added that “the demolition of the White House [is] a metaphor that, if anything, is too on the nose” for Trump’s presidency.

John Oliver Slams Trump’s ‘Great Gatsby’ Party Amid SNAP Freeze

by jummy84 November 3, 2025
written by jummy84

As many celebrated Halloween, the end of the month also marked the suspension of SNAP benefits for many Americans amid the government shutdown.

On Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver called out Donald Trump for continuing to blame the shutdown on Democrats as he went to a Great Gatsby-themed Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago before his administration froze the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) on Nov. 1.

“Yeah, not only is that pretty insulting,” he said. “I’m guessing it’s also pretty infuriating to whatever exhausted high school freshman just wrote a 4,000-word essay about Great Gatsby as a grim meditation on the disillusionment of the American Dream, only for CNN to tell them, ‘You know what? It’s really just a book about rich people partying.’”

Oliver continued, “And for what it’s worth, the actual theme of that event was, and I quote, ‘A Little Party Never Killed Nobody.’ And I guess that is true. Although, it is also true, that as we are all finding out right now, a ‘grand old party’ is capable of killing a whole lot of people, and unfortunately, they don’t seem to give a single marble and gold-encased shit about that.”

The suspension of SNAP benefits to over 42 million Americans by the Trump administration on Nov. 1 has proved to be a political lightning rod during a pretty low-key shutdown. In some of the ugliest examples of the MAGA mindset, the Department of Agriculture has determined in October it can’t use the billions in contingency funds long set aside for SNAP, due to legal considerations.

That decision has led to a series of court challenges by states, cities and others amidst an expected surge at food banks.

Two federal judges this week ruled the administration has to tap into the $6 billion available. However, despite Trump posting late Friday it would be his “honor to provide the funding, just like I did with military and law enforcement pay,” the administration is demanding the courts provide guidance on how to pay out — a process that will still delay SNAP recipients from receiving benefits for weeks in the very best case scenario.

Holiday movie enthusiasts, rejoice—Netflix is kicking off the holiday season early with its first Christmas rom-com of the year: A Merry Little Ex-Mas. This cozy holiday romp reunites two ’90s favorites, Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) and Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the Teenage Witch), who co-wrote and executive produced.

Against the backdrop of snowy suburbs and holiday cheer, the film follows Kate (Silverstone), a recently divorced mother who’s determined to keep Christmas traditions intact for her kids. That means issuing an invitation to her ex-husband Everett (played by Oliver Hudson) and his family to ring in the holidays together, just like old times. The unnecessary twist? Everett shows up with his new, younger, klutzy charming girlfriend (played by The Good Place’s Jameela Jamil).

While Kate tries to be gracious, her self-assurance takes a hit—until the arrival of a handsome new paramour (Pierson Fodé, The Wrong Paris) who disrupts her world. There are flash points and a whirlwind romance that is warming things up—literally, as seen in the trailer when Fodé’s tuxedo can barely contain his superhero physique. This burgeoning romance places Kate on a path of self-discovery, assisted by her ever-present supportive best friend (Hart), as the two women navigate fresh phases of life, love, and motherhood.

Oliver Stark Talks Buck’s Jealousy, Space, Honoring Bobby, More (Exclusive)

by jummy84 October 10, 2025
written by jummy84

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for the 9-1-1 Season 9 premiere “Eat the Rich.”]

9-1-1 kicks off its ninth season with an episode that features a billionaire being swallowed by a whale — then rescued by the 118, of course — and sends two of its own to space. Yes, Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Athena (Angela Bassett) are leaving Earth. “It’s very on brand for 9-1-1,” Oliver Stark says.

But he does agree it’s not like there’s much the 118 can do about the trouble coming for Hen and Athena, whose trip to space comes after the paramedic helps save the billionaire (Mark Consuelos). “It’s not really within the 118’s abilities to help them in space, but there are other people down on earth and characters within the show that can offer a little bit more to try and help that situation,” Stark says as part of TV Insider’s 9-1-1 aftershow, First Response. “There are plenty of people down on the ground that are going to end up needing help and in kind of classic 9-1-1 style, the most bizarre ways you could possibly imagine.”

The 118 this year is moving on without Bobby, and the firehouse is dedicated in his memory. It is now the Robert Nash Memorial Station. Filming that dedication was “emotional,” admits Stark. “It was a real moment of clarity in the sense that this is the show now. It is different here, but it was also kind of beautiful, and it was honoring, obviously, Bobby Nash on the show. But I think anytime we have a huge scene like that with all the characters and a scene of that nature, we were honoring Pete as well and what he meant to us. And so yeah, it was a mixture of emotions — it was sad, but it was also a celebration of him and I really hope that it comes across like that and that we are paying tribute to everything that they both were to the show.”

As for how Buck’s doing without Bobby this season, “it comes and goes,” the star shares. “I don’t think you see it having too much of a negative effect in the first few episodes, but then there is an episode later on in the season where you do start to see Buck get really in his head about it again.”

Elsewhere in the episode, with Chimney (Kenneth Choi) now interim captain, Eddie (Ryan Guzman) and Hen are working together, while Buck’s partnered up with Ravi (Anirudh Pisharody). And, to no one’s surprise, given how Buck has acted in the past when Eddie grows close to someone else, he’s not exactly happy with the “dream team” his best friend is part of with someone else.

“I think it’s just that he wants things to be normal. We’re talking about him adjusting to Bobby or the loss of Bobby. So, now it’s just that something else is different, something else has changed, and I just think he wants to cling onto everything that he knows and kind of keep that as close to his chest as he can, and this is just another thing that he has to adjust to,” explains Stark.

Watch the full video aftershow with Oliver Stark about the premiere, the space emergency, Buck’s jealousy of Eddie and Hen’s friendship, what’s coming up in Buck’s love life, how he feels about a new captain, and much more.

John Oliver Defends Jimmy Kimmel in Wake of Suspension

by jummy84 September 22, 2025
written by jummy84

John Oliver used the main segment of his HBO show Sunday night addressing the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel.

Last week, Disney suspended the host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! following the ABC late-night host’s remarks about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The dramatic move followed Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr threatening to take action against ABC affiliates in the wake of a Kimmel comment that many took as suggesting the shooting suspect, Tyler Robinson, was a MAGA Republican during his Monday monologue.

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said.

After station owners Nexstar and Sinclair said they would not be airing Jimmy Kimmel Live! in the wake of those comments, Disney made the decision to suspend Kimmel indefinitely. The company has faced backlash from Hollywood A-listers, current and veteran late-night hosts, politicians and the public for its decision, with many accusing Disney of bowing to pressure from the Trump administration.

On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, Oliver started off his main segment by noting Kirk’s tragic death.

“A person getting shot is tragic and a person getting shot for their ideas is horrifying,” he said. “That is true no matter what those ideas are, and I also recognize that for many, especially those who are the targets of some of Kirk’s ideas, it has been hard to stay quiet as they see flags lowered to half staff, and claims that he debated things the right way. But setting all of that aside, it does seem like some are now willing to weaponize Kirk’s death to do things they’ve been wanting to do for years, whether it’s going after liberal groups, trans people, or their remaining critics in the media, and under some shamelessly flimsy pretext, all of which brings us back to Jimmy Kimmel.”

Oliver noted he appeared on Kimmel’s show the very night Kimmel made this comments. He defended Kimmel and said he was unclear about what was offensive about Kimmel’s remarks.

“While you may have seen headlines saying he got in trouble for remarks about Charlie Kirk himself, or even remarks about his death, that’s not strictly accurate,” Oliver noted. “The comments that got him in trouble weren’t about Kirk. In fact, Kimmel’s first comments after his murder were a post reading, ‘Can we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human? On behalf of my family, we send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents, and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence,’ ” Oliver added, quoting a social media post by Kimmel.

“What got Kimmel in trouble was a passing reference on Monday night. Now at the time there were still rumors flying around regarding the killer’s motivations, including that he was on the far right, something that Kimmel alluded to like this,” he said, showing a clip of Kimmel’s aforementioned remark.

“Yeah, that was it,” Oliver said. “Weirdly, I was actually a guest on his show that night and I didn’t even register that comment and that’s only partly because I wasn’t really paying attention,” he quipped. “And I’m not alone in that. After Kimmel’s suspension, many struggle to pick the offensive line out of his monologue, as YouTube is filled with comments under the video like, ‘I’m still waiting for the offensive part.’ And, ‘What did he say that got him fired? I’m rewatching the last week of episodes and have’et heard it yet.””

Oliver continued: “The point is, Kimmel didn’t denigrate Charlie Kirk or make light of his killing. The worst thing you could say is that he appears to have been wrong about the shooter’s ideology, which, OK. But he was also pointing out that many on the right seem desperate to weaponize Kirk’s death, an argument that’s aged pretty well, given, you know, everything that’s happened to Kimmel since. Because that one line set off a firestorm in some corners of conservative media.”

Oliver also noted that Nexstar has a motivation to keep the Trump administration happy, since it’s currently in the process of acquiring competitor Tegna and needs regulatory changes for that deal to be completed.

“Nexstar badly needs FCC approval, so it is hardly surprising that when Carr specifically said companies should pull Kimmel off the air or face consequences, it quickly complies,” Oliver said. “Basically, Brendon Carr said jump, and Nexstar took his dick out of their mouth for just long enough to say how high exactly.”

Oliver also called out Sinclair as another “major owner of TV stations who were also apparently exploring merger options that would require FCC approval [that] announced that they too would not air Kimmel’s show, and Sinclair even cited Carr’s remarks in their statement, saying, ‘We appreciate FCC Chairman Carr’s remarks today,’ and come on, Sinclair. As I believe Olandria once said to Huda on Love Island, ‘Don’t embarrass yourself going too hard for a man.’ Just solid advice for the islands of love and for business.”

Oliver went on to note that Carr wasn’t “trying to dissuade people from connecting the dots here as when one media reporter asked him for a comment, he sent back a smiley emoji” and sent a gif of The Office to CNN in response.

“It’s from The Office, and that’s, that was the actual response by the chairman of the FCC,” Oliver said, adding: “Look, I like The Office. Who doesn’t like The Office? Sure, I could have done without seasons 8 and 9, but if it’s on at a hotel, I’m not kicking it out of bed. That said, I want you to run through your friend list in your head right now and pick out the person most likely to text you a gif from The Office. Do you have them in your mind? They’re your least favorite friend, right? Just be honest. They’re the one you invite to stuff just because you’re afraid no one else will show up. They’re a third-string friend, they’re your backup’s backup, and if you’re thinking, ‘There’s nothing wrong with sending Office gifs,’ I’m afraid that person might be you.”

Oliver again emphasized that what went down was very easy to see.

“Look, the sequence of events here could not be clearer because it was all done in plain view,” he said. “Carr leaned on broadcasters to take down Kimmel. They did that, sometimes even directly citing Carr while doing so, and then Carr celebrated with a fun gif. That sure seems like a pretty clear case of the government pressuring companies to censor speech.”

Oliver went on to say that Kimmel’s suspension feels like a “turning point.”

“Not because comedians are important, but because we are not,” he said. “If the government can force a network to pull a late night show off the air and do so in plain view, it can do a fuck of a lot worse.”

He quipped that he and his show are in a “different situation” because he isn’t on broadcast TV and HBO parent company  Warner Bros. Discovery doesn’t own broadcast networks, meaning that it’s less susceptible to pressure from the FCC  than Disney, which owns ABC. Oliver then showed a news clip of Paramount Skydance reportedly prepping a bid to buy Warner Bros. Discovery.

Cut to Oliver shouting expletives. “It was fun while it lasted, guys. Whatever happens next, let me say now, it has been the honor of my life to age like a haunted painting before your very eyes,” he joked.

Oliver then noted the importance of free speech and the First Amending.

“It should be clear to everyone that the First Amendment is absolutely critical in this country,” he said. ” That is something even Brendan Carr knows, given that he once tweeted, ‘Free speech is the counterweight. It is the check on government control. That is why censorship is the authoritarian’s dream.’ And I’m guessing that Trump is currently enjoying that dream so much he could break his bed sheets in half.”

Oliver then urged Disney to stand by Kimmel and his staff and shared ways in which viewers could “encourage” them to do that, including by canceling their subscriptions to Disney+ or Hulu.

He then wrapped up his segment by addressing Disney CEO Bob Iger directly.

“Hi there, Bob, we haven’t met, but you probably know me as America’s third favorite Zazu,” the character Oliver voiced in The Lion King. “Congratulations on recasting that role, by the way, it was a fun thing to learn about after the fact,” he joked.

“Anyway, one day, the history of the time we’re living through is going to be written, and when it is, I’m not sure it’s those in this administration who are even gonna come off the worst,” he continued. “Now don’t get me wrong, they’re going to come off terribly. But history’s also gonna remember the cowards who definitely knew better, but still let things happen, whether it was for money, convenience or just comfort. And I know, this is something of a tough sell, and it can be a bit of anathema to risk averse business leaders, but I will say this: If we’ve learned nothing else from this administration’s second term so far, and I don’t think we have, is that giving the bully your lunch money doesn’t make him go away, it just makes him come back hungrier each time. They are never going to stop.”

He continued: “At some point, you’re going to have to draw a line, so I’d argue why not draw it right here. And when they come to you with stupid, ridiculous demands, picking fights that you know you could win in court, Instead of rolling over, why not stand up and use four key words that they don’t tend to teach you in business school. Not ‘OK, you’re the boss.’ Not ‘whatever you say goes.’ But instead, the only phrase that can genuinely make a weak bully go away, and that is, ‘Fuck you, make me.’”

‘Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver Calls Out FCC Over Kimmel

Following his big night at last weekend’s 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, where he won Outstanding Scripted Variety Series and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, John Oliver had his work cut out for him on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight.

The comedian pulled no punches as he called out Nexstar and Sinclair, claiming they had to get Brendan Carr‘s “dick out of their mouth” to carry out the apparent FCC-sanctioned campaign against Jimmy Kimmel.

“We were off last week, and a lot happened since our last show,” said Oliver in his monologue before launching into the recap, including Trump’s royal visit to the U.K., where protesters projected a photo of the POTUS with Jeffrey Epstein on the side of Windsor Castle.

“That does make me genuinely proud of the country I’m worried I’m gonna be deported to after this show airs,” he continued. “because we’re gonna dive straight in with our main story tonight.”

Catching his audience up on Disney‘s announcement that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be “preempted indefinitely.” The suspension has been criticized by many as an attack on free speech, following the FCC’s warning about his Charlie Kirk comments.

As Nexstar attempts to double its size by acquiring competitor Tegna, Oliver explained, “The point is, Nexstar badly needs FCC approval, so it is hardly surprising that when Carr specifically said companies should pull Kimmel off the air or face consequences, it quickly complied.

“Basically, Brendan Carr said ‘jump,’ and Nexstar took his dick out of their mouth for just long enough to say, ‘How high, exactly?’” added Oliver, noting that Sinclair then followed suit, while also pursuing merger options that require FCC approval.

“The sequence of events here could not be clearer, because it was all done in plain view,” Oliver explained. “Carr leaned on broadcasters to take down Kimmel. They did that, sometimes even directly citing Carr while doing so, and then Carr celebrated with a fun GIF. That sure seems like a pretty clear case of the government pressuring companies to censor speech. And it’s not like Trump is even trying to hide it.”

Oliver then pointed out that he should be safe at HBO as it isn’t on broadcast and therefore, “much less susceptible to pressure from the FCC,” adding: “That is obviously very good new for us, and I really don’t see why that situation should change anytime soon.”

The comedian then played clips of news coverage about Paramount‘s potential bid for Warner Bros., launching into an expletive-laden rant.

Known for his ‘Prove Me Wrong’ debates and MAGA POV, activist Kirk was shot dead at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10 in a tragedy that has sent shock through the political and media worlds.

Having previously mocked Trump over POTUS’ take on the NFL and TikTok, Kimmel offered his blunt assessment of the aftermath of Kirk’s death in his opening monologue on his Sept. 15 show: “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

What Did John Oliver, Hannah Einbinder Say When Bleeped at Emmys 2025

For an awards show hosted by clean comedian Nate Bargatze, who avoids using foul language in his stand-up sets, the 2025 Emmys featured a surprisingly high number of f-bombs.

The CBS telecast of Sunday night’s awards ceremony had its sound cut out multiple times for home viewers as a number of winners peppered their acceptance speeches with curse words.

At one point, Bargatze even joked, he was going to start a swear jar.

So what did those bleeped winners say? Read on to find out.

Hannah Einbinder

The Hacks star won best supporting actress in a comedy, her first Emmy for her work in the fourth season of the Max series, and ended her speech with some pointed political remarks. While her “free Palestine” cry is getting attention, prior to that she also declared “Fuck ICE,” calling out the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency that’s been particularly active during Donald Trump’s second term, as the president has pushed for massive deportations of suspected illegal immigrants.

John Oliver

The Last Week Tonight host continued his Emmys winning streak, nabbing his third consecutive trophy in the scripted variety series category after his HBO show was recategorized. When he took the stage to accept his award, Oliver spoke fast, seemingly in an attempt to get his full speech within the allotted time, after Bargatze had declared that long speeches would deduct money from a charitable donation to the Boys and Girls Club.

“Fuck you, Nate Bargatze, that is a lot of money for you!” Oliver said, as he neared the end of his remarks. “And you can add a ‘fuck’ to the swear jar as well.”

Erin Doherty

The Adolescence actress, who won for best supporting actress in a limited series, praised her award-winning colleagues Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham and her family members before thanking the Television Academy, saying to the awards organization, “you’re all fucking stunning.”

Seth Rogen

Rogen won multiple awards on Sunday night, but it was when he won his final prize of best comedy series for The Studio that he colorfully expressed his regret for taking so much money away from Bargatze’s donation (not to worry, the host announced at the end of the show that the organization would receive a $350,000 donation after all).

After sharing his gratitude for all of the love shown to The Studio, Rogen joked, “If anyone else wants to say something, we’re already in debt. We fucked over the Boys and Girls, so.”
