Christopher Nolan Says The Odyssey Contains A Bit of Everything in It

Christopher Nolan has tackled superheroes, sci-fi, noir, and historical drama in his films, but for “The Odyssey,” his first film since winning the Best Picture Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Nolan said he wanted to take on a story that has “a bit of everything in it.”

“I mean, it truly contains all stories,” Nolan told Empire magazine in his first interview well before the release of “The Odyssey” next summer. “As a filmmaker, you’re looking for gaps in cinematic culture, things that haven’t been done before. And what I saw is that all of this great mythological cinematic work that I had grown up with — Ray Harryhausen movies and other things — I’d never seen that done with the sort of weight and credibility that an A-budget and a big Hollywood, IMAX production could do.”

'The Running Man'

Along with a few first-look images of “The Odyssey,” Nolan described to the British film magazine the feeling of being out on the sea for the last four months, aiming to bring his practical effect style of filmmaking to Homer’s epic. Nolan said he shot 2 million feet of film to capture the epic, and he called the whole experience of being out on the sea “pretty primal.”

“It’s vast and terrifying and wonderful and benevolent, as the conditions shift. We really wanted to capture how hard those journeys would have been for people. And the leap of faith that was being made in an unmapped, uncharted world,” he said. “By embracing the physicality of the real world in the making of the film, you do inform the telling of the story in interesting ways…because you’re confronted on a daily basis by the world pushing back at you.”

Matt Damon is starring as Odysseus in Nolan’s film, his third with Nolan after both “Interstellar” and “Oppenheimer.” It also features a staggering cast that includes Tom Holland as Odysseus’ son Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as his wife Penelope, and Mia Goth as Melantho. The film also stars Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Benny Safdie, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, and Elliot Page in currently undisclosed roles (though Jennifer Lawrence joked to us that Pattinson is playing one of the sirens).

Universal is releasing “The Odyssey” in theaters on July 17, 2026.

“Be the first one to find God, and you can rewrite your fate.” CMC Pictures in China has revealed the main official trailer for a big action fantasy sequel called A Writer’s Odyssey 2, the follow-up to the hit movie A Writer’s Odyssey from 2021. “Reality is being overwritten by fiction…” Can he stop it? The writer is back again for another epic story. “Before you step into the theater, make sure you’re not his next character. The story isn’t finished yet… but the NPCs are already off-script! Plot is spiraling out of control—return to reality while you still can.” Struggling novelist Lu Kongwen gives in to a powerful temptation, plunging himself and his fictional characters into an inescapable crisis. Through rediscovering his purpose, he joins forces with his creations to heroically resolve the dual-world catastrophe. The movie stars Deng Chao, Dong Zijian, Lei Jiayin, Wang Shengdi, and Ding Chengxin. Just like the first movie, this looks like a crazy action-packed, CGI-filled adventure with tons of creatures and characters and fights and everything else. Have fun.

Here’s the official trailer (+ posters) for Yang Lu’s action sequel A Writer’s Odyssey 2, from YouTube:

In the end, the novelist confronts his own dark side, regains his faith, and joins forces with his characters to save both worlds from impending doom. A Writer’s Odyssey 2, also known as 刺杀小说家2 or Ci Sha Xiao shuo jia 2, is once again directed by Chinese filmmaker Yang Lu, director of the films My Spectacular Theatre, Brotherhood of Blades 1 & 2, The Sacrifice, and the first A Writer’s Odyssey, plus the series “The Wind Blows from Longxi” & “The Mutations”. The screenplay is by Zelin Li. Exec produced by Hongwei Wang. The film opens first in China starting in early October this year. CMC Pictures will also release A Writer’s Odyssey in select US theaters starting on October 3rd, 2025 coming up. Who’s down?

Tom Holland Says ‘The Odyssey’ Is the ‘Best Script I’ve Ever Read’

Tom Holland continues to heap praise upon Christopher Nolan‘s “The Odyssey,” which he wrapped production on earlier this year before kicking off filming on “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Holland is playing Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, in the movie. The actor recently told Agence France-Presse that Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic is “the best script I’ve ever read.” No offense, Spider-Man.

“Chris [Nolan] is a real collaborator,” Holland added. “He knows what he wants… but it is not an environment where you can’t pitch ideas or build characters in certain ways.”

“The Odyssey” marks Nolan’s highly-anticipated follow-up to his Oscar winner “Oppenheimer.” Matt Damon leads the movie as Odysseus opposite a sprawling ensemble cast that includes Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Jon Bernthal. Holland told GQ Sports in July that filming The Odyssey” was “the job of a lifetime, without a doubt” and “the best experience I’ve had on a film set.”

“It was exciting. It was different. And I think the movie is going to be unlike anything we’ve ever seen,” Holland added at the time. “Working with Chris, getting to know him and Emma [Thomas] was absolutely fantastic. I’ve never seen someone that can work the way that they do, and there is a reason why they’re the best in the business for sure. To get a front row seat to that and to be a part of the process and to collaborate with a true master of his craft and learn from him was the best experience I’ve ever had.”

Holland previously told “Good Morning America” that getting the offer from Nolan to star in “The Odyssey” was “the phone call of a lifetime” and “reminiscent of getting the call about ‘Spider-Man’ 10 years ago. It’s an amazing thing for me. I’m super proud and I’m really, really excited.”

As for “Spider-Man,” Holland is currently in production on his fourth standalone Marvel movie as the iconic web-slinger. Overall, the movie will mark his seventh appearance in the MCU. He told AFP that it “still feels like the first time.”

“Yesterday, I was on top of a tank driving down the high street in Glasgow, in front of thousands of fans, and it was awesome,” Holland said. “It was so incredible, it was exciting, and exhilarating, and it felt fresh.”

“The Odyssey” is set for release on July 17 from Universal Pictures. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” follows on July 31 from Sony.
