3 Snacks To Eat For a Better Night’s Sleep

by jummy84 November 15, 2025
written by jummy84

How you eat can have a major impact on your energy throughout the day, and even impact how well you sleep. The common advice is to get enough protein, avoid eating between meals, and be sure to have your last meal of the day four hours before bedtime. It all seems reasonable—that is, until you’re lying in bed with a growling tummy and a mind that won’t stop obsessing.

Turns out that having an afternoon snack can make all the difference—provided that the snack in question contains the right nutrients, of course. In fact, according to the principles of chrononutrition, which involves eating according to the body’s biological needs at a given moment, eating certain nutrients in the afternoon can drastically your nighttime snooze.

Why have a snack?

In the late afternoon, the body’s blood sugar levels naturally dip. As an added bonus, serotonin, the hormone that promotes feelings of wellbeing and regulates sleep-wake rhythms, is synthesized into melatonin when the sun begins to set, thanks to the amino acid tryptophan. Both of these factors can influence our appetite, which is why we often crave a snack as soon as the work day begins to end.

In other words, craving an afternoon snack is perfectly natural. But choosing what to eat when the craving hits is key. The goal is to provide the body with energy without causing blood sugar to spike—and, to eat something healthy that will provide sustenance without ruining our appetite for dinner.

The importance of magnesium and tryptophan

For a restful night’s sleep, “it’s best to target foods rich in sleep-inducing nutrients such as magnesium and tryptophan,” explains Dr Laure Hyvernat, a gut microbiota expert.

Increasing magnesium intake through diet or supplements, has been shown to significantly improve sleep quality. Magnesium also has a powerful calming effect. Avocados, dark chocolate (90% raw cacao), and walnuts are excellent sources of this precious mineral. Most of us suffer from magnesium deficiency due to high levels of stress and poor digestion, which adds up to poor absorption of nutrients.

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid and precursor of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Eating tryptophan-rich foods will facilitate the synthesis of melatonin and have a positive impact on your nights. It is also the precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin, also known as the happiness hormone. Tryptophan is found in large quantities in bananas, almonds, and chocolate, or more precisely in cacao, so choose a version with at least 90% cocoa.

Afternoon snacks that improve sleep

Banana

“Rich in tryptophan, magnesium, B vitamins, and carbohydrates, the banana is the ideal fruit to have at snack time. As an added bonus, it’s rich in prebiotic fiber, which nourishes your microbiota and thus contributes to a strong immune system during germ season,” says Hyvernat.

Dark chocolate

Chocolate with a high cocoa content makes a great snack thanks to “its rich magnesium content, which helps you cope with everyday stress,” notes Hyvernat. Just one caveat about chocolate: It can be energizing because it contains caffeine and theobromine, so avoid eating it too close to bedtime.

Almonds

“One handful of almonds boosts tryptophan,” says Hyvernat, who recommends “activating” them by soaking them for an hour or so in a glass of water, then draining and drying them before eating. “This step not only makes them crunchier, but also deactivates their phytic acid, an anti-nutrient that prevents the proper absorption of the minerals such as iron, zinc, and calcium.”

3 recipes for healthy afternoon snacks

Bananas, almonds, and chocolate can be eaten alone, or used as ingredients to make tasty, sleep-improving afternoon snacks. Below are a few healthy options that Hyvernat recommends:

Sprints share memories of nights out with Greta Thunberg and Fontaines D.C

Sprints have shared a story of a night out with Fontaines D.C. and Greta Thunberg. Find all the details below.

In a new interview with Lad Bible Ireland, the group reminisced on a night with the environmental activist, explaining that their wildest memory: “Was getting Greta Thunberg in our van and driving her to a pub with Fontaines D.C. and going out for the night, that was fucking wild,” vocalist Karla Chubb said.

Guitarist Zachary Stephenson went on to say: “Then she came to the next gig and like, used our green room and left her gigantic rucksack, which she travels the world with. And she doesn’t even have a fixed home, she just brings this massive bag.”

“Loves an Aperol Spritz, our Greta does,” Chubb added. Watch the clip below.

Thunberg has been in the news lately, claiming to Swedish officials that she has been subjected to harsh treatment after being abducted in international waters and illegally detained in an Israeli prison, according to correspondence seen by the Guardian.

In an email seen by the publication, an official who has visited her in prison claimed she was detained in a cell infested with bedbugs and with too little food and water.

News of Thunberg’s alleged ill treatment follows Israeli forces intercepting at least 39 vessels and detaining dozens of crew members on the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was attempting to break Israel’s illegal blockade and deliver essential humanitarian aid to the occupied Gaza Strip, amidst the ongoing genocide.

“The embassy has been able to meet with Greta,” the email seen by The Guardian read. “She informed of dehydration. She has received insufficient amounts of both water and food. She also stated that she had developed rashes, which she suspects were caused by bedbugs. She spoke of harsh treatment and said she had been sitting for long periods on hard surfaces.”

Fontaines D.C. and AURORA are among those who have expressed solidarity with Thunberg in light of the news.

Thunberg will be deported to Greece today (October 6), per the Independent.

This marks the second time Thunberg has been arrested alongside other flotilla members, after a similar attempt earlier this year ended with the activists’ arrest and deportation.

Back in July, Fontaines shared an image of themselves backstage with Thunberg at Roskilde Festival, which followed Thunberg’s announcement of the first campaign to deliver aid. In a video update shared in June, she sported a Fontaines D.C. charity shirt and raised awareness for the ‘Freedom Flotilla‘ trip, which saw her and 11 other campaigners set sail for Gaza in an attempt to “break Israel’s siege”.

On June 9, FFC shared an update claiming that Israel had “forcibly intercepted” the boat and acted with “total impunity”, which saw the entertainment world come out in similar condemnation.

The festive fervour of Navratri is in full swing across India, and Mumbai witnessed one of its most spectacular celebrations at the Radiance Dandiya night, hosted at the Jio World Convention Centre. Leading the celebrations was Nita Ambani, who joined Falguni Pathak for an evening filled with devotion, music, and the vibrant spirit of garba.

A video showed Nita Ambani dancing with Falguni Pathak.(Instagram/@jioworldconventioncentre)

From offering prayers to matching steps to the rhythmic beats of garba, Nita Ambani’s graceful participation set the tone for a night. Dressed in festive attire, she was seen performing garba steps alongside Pathak, drawing applause from the audience.

Nita Ambani recalls childhood memories

Speaking at the event, Nita Ambani shared her personal connection with the festival. “I remember, when I was a young girl, I used to dance all nine nights of Navratri. It brings back so many beautiful memories,” she said. She also spoke about her long association with Falguni Pathak, adding, “I’ve known Falguni for 25 years.”

Navratri, celebrated over nine days, is dedicated to Goddess Durga and involves fasting, prayers, and evening performances of garba and dandiya. Cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Mumbai transform into cultural hotspots, with music, traditional attire, and spirited dancing at the heart of the festivities.

The Ambani family has long been known for celebrating Indian traditions with grandeur, and this year was no different. Nita Ambani’s brief but energetic garba steps with Falguni Pathak became one of the highlights of the Radiance Dandiya event, which was held at the Jio Convention Centre in Mumbai.

Navratri celebrations

Navratri is not just a religious festival but a celebration of life and devotion. Each day honours a different form of Goddess Durga, with specific rituals, colours, and offerings adding to the richness of this spiritual journey.

Enjoy Navratri nights to the fullest without worrying about your makeup. These tips ensure it stays put through hours of sweat and dancing.

Navratri 2025: The nine days of Navratri see a lot of high-energy activity, whether it is dancing for long hours at garba nights or hopping from one pandal to another. While you glam up for the anticipated night, the sweaty humidity may make your makeup melt. But with the right makeup products and application tricks, the glam festive look stays intact.

Don’t let melting makeup get in the way of your festive fun.(Pexel)

Monika Khullar, makeup artist and head trainer atAnastasia Beverly Hills, shared with us these 5 easy makeup tips, from base to setting:

1. Start with the right base

  • Prepping your skin is as important as the makeup itself. Cleanse and hydrate well, then use a mattifying primer to control excess oil.
  • A lightweight, long-wear foundation or a foundation tinted works best; heavy layers only increase the chances of smudging.

2. Choose transfer-proof formulas

  • Opt for waterproof and smudge-proof products wherever possible. A long-wear base, concealer, blush, and cream-to-powder formulas hold up better under sweat.
  • Powder the T-zone lightly with a setting powder to keep shine under control without making the skin look cakey.

3. Eye makeup that lasts

Apply eye primer to ensure the makeup stays the entire night!(Adobe Stock)

  • For eye looks, an eye primer ensures colours pop and stay put. Gel or liquid liners are more resistant to smudging than pencils.
  • Waterproof mascara is a must, especially if you’ll be dancing for hours.
  • If you’re adding shimmer, press it onto the lid with your finger for maximum grip.

4. Lock in brows and lips

  • Well-defined brows frame the face, but sweat can make them fade quickly.
  • Use a brow gel to keep them in place. For lips, go for long-wear matte liquid lipsticks; they last longer than creamy formulas and won’t transfer easily.

5. Set and refresh

  • As a final step, set your makeup with a matte setting spray with a hydrating formula. This way, your makeup is well set and lasts longer.
  • Keep some quick-fix essentials handy in your bag for touch-ups, a powder puff with mini loose powder or blotting papers or mini setting spray, lip cheek tints, they’ll help control excess shine and absorb sweat without disturbing your look.

Your Navratri nights can become worry-free, especially from the requirement of frequent touch-ups if you choose the right makeup products and follow the right techniques.

First Teaser for ‘100 Nights of Hero’ with Maika Monroe & Emma Corrin

“Whatever the lady wants…” IFC Films has debuted a tantalizing first look teaser trailer for 100 Nights of Hero, a fantasy romance thriller from the filmmaker Julia Jackman as her second feature film (following Bonus Track). This will be premiering at the 2025 Venice Film Festival which begins this week – playing in the Critics Week sidebar section known as “SIC”. IFC has also confirmed a release date for December 2025 – the film plays in select theaters later this year. When her neglectful husband departs after placing a secret wager to test her fidelity, Cherry and her sharp-witted maid must fend off a dangerously seductive visitor: Manfred. The film is adapted from the hit graphic novel of the same name. Here’s a better intro from that book to setup the stakes: “In the tradition of The Arabian Nights, a beautifully illustrated tapestry of folk tales and myths about the secret legacy of female storytellers in an imagined medieval world. In the Empire of Migdal Bavel, Cherry is married to Jerome, a wicked man who makes a diabolical wager with his friend Manfred: if Manfred can seduce Cherry in one hundred nights, he can have his castle – and Cherry.” Oyy! Starring Emma Corrin as Hero, Nicholas Galitzine as Manfred, Maika Monroe as Cherry, Amir El-Masry, Charli XCX (yes for real!), Richard E. Grant, and Felicity Jones. So far, so good – I’m curious.

Here’s the first teaser trailer for Julia Jackman’s film 100 Nights of Hero, direct from IFC’s YouTube:

Intro via SIC: “Set in Darkly End, an alternate world ruled by the despotic Birdman. Cherry is unhappily married to Jerome, who doesn’t want to spend time with her. Considering their ‘duty’ to produce an heir, this is worrying. The only bright spot in Cherry’s day is her maid, Hero. Hero is part of a secret society that collects stories of women who rebelled and met unjust fates, vowing their sacrifices won’t be forgotten… Because death is never far away for women here. So, when Jerome mysteriously goes on a ‘business trip’ and leaves Cherry with his flirtatious friend Manfred, Hero has a bad feeling. As the charming Manfred settles in, Cherry finds herself caught between the only man who has ever listened to her – and the maid she is developing forbidden feelings for. All rebellious women end up dead – can Cherry & Hero escape that fate?”

100 Nights of Hero is written and directed by the British writer / filmmaker Julia Jackman, making her second feature film after directing Bonus Track before, and many short films. Based on Isabel Greenberg’s graphic novel titled “The One Hundred Nights of Hero” published in 2016. Produced by Stephanie Aspin, Helen Simmons, Grant S. Johnson. This is premiering at the 2025 Venice Film Festival in the Critics Week sidebar (aka Settimana Internazionale della Critica – or SIC). IFC Films then debuts Jackman’s 100 Nights of Hero film in select US theaters starting December 5th, 2025 later this year. Intrigued? Looking good?

In its second year at its new location in Northern Arizona’s blissful Playa Ponderosa, Desert Hearts Festival proved yet again why it’s considered one of the tightest knit families in dance music. Nestled within the world’s largest ponderosa pine forest, some of today’s (and tomorrow’s) most notable artists delivered their inspired sets at 7,000 feet elevation.

Dirtybird Campout and Northern Nights Music Festival, two of Northern California’s most celebrated independent music festivals, will converge on the Humboldt/Mendocino County Line at Cook’s Valley Campground – a stunning location surrounded by towering California Redwoods on the Eel River – to present an extraordinary weekend of music, art, cannabis, wellness, and community from July 18-20. Fans from both communities can look forward to a dynamic, genre-spanning lineup that blends Dirtybird’s signature sound and beloved artists with Northern Nights’ eclectic music curation and cutting-edge cannabis experience. The picturesque Northern Nights venue will come alive with programming reminiscent of the early Dirtybird Campout days – where fan-favorite moments like the legendary end of weekend Family Set reigned supreme – and surprise back to back sets, label and collective takeovers, triumphant sunrise sets, adult summer camp spirited games and activities, and an abundance of unexpected and unforgettable moments are in store.
