Netflix, Calm, and Train Dreams: Marketing While You Sleep

by jummy84 November 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Points for creativity: Netflix partnered with mental wellness app Calm to create an immersive audio experience inspired by its Oscar-aspiring “Train Dreams.” The collaboration, launching today, represents Netflix’s first venture on the Calm platform and a potential blueprint for how specialty films can cut through the noise by targeting audiences when they’re asleep.

The 20-minute “Sleep Story x Soundscape” hybrid transforms Clint Bentley’s drama into a meditative audio journey, featuring narrator Will Patton alongside the film’s original score and sound design. Adapted from Denis Johnson’s Pulitzer-nominated novella about a railroad laborer in the early 20th century American West, “Train Dreams” explores themes of solitude, loss, and resilience — the kind of contemplative territory where Calm’s 100 million users already spend their time.

IN YOUR DREAMS - In Your Dreams is a comedy adventure about Stevie (12) and her little brother Elliot (8) who journey into the absurd landscape of their own dreams. If the siblings can withstand a snarky stuffed giraffe, zombie breakfast foods, and the queen of nightmares, the Sandman will grant them their ultimate dream come true... the perfect family. Cr: Netflix © 2025

The Calm team worked with the film’s sound designer, Lee Salevan, and composer Bryce Dessner, utilizing the film’s sound stems and score cues overlaid with sections of dialogue from Bentley and Greg Kwedar’s script.

The odds are stacked against independent and specialty films capturing audience attention. However, this may represent a new kind of counterprogramming: Rather than shout louder, this collaboration markets while you sleep.

Calm previously collaborated with superhero franchises like “Venom: The Last Dance” (voiced by Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and Venom), but this is the first film partnership to create one of its Sleep Stories.

Calm has also previously created Sleep Stories from public-domain classics like “Pride and Prejudice” and “The Wizard of Oz,” and enlisted talent like Walton Goggins and Lin-Manuel Miranda to narrate original Sleep Stories like “The Yard Sale” and “Adventures in Puerto Rico.”

The film stars Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, and William H. Macy, with Patton’s narration carrying over to the Calm experience. The distribution strategy extends beyond Calm’s app, with Netflix sharing the soundscape across YouTube, Instagram, and X.

Presidents Don’t Respond on Mondays

Briskly covering James Garfield’s unexpected nomination for the presidency through his assassination just four months after taking office, Mike Makowsky’s four-episode Netflix series is a savvy deconstruction of American myths invigorated by rip-roaring performances and a wily sense of humor.

Matt Rife Sets Holiday-Themed Crowd Work Special on Netflix

by jummy84 November 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Christmas is coming early for Matt Rife fans.

The superstar comedian has teamed with Netflix for a surprise holiday special, Matt Rife: Unwrapped — A Christmas Crowd Work Special, set to debut across the globe on Dec. 2. With Unwrapped, Rife “explores gifts, traditions and who’s made it on the naughty or nice list this year,” per the streamer. Directed by good friend and fellow comedian Erik Griffin, the special was taped in Phoenix, Arizona. Rife also executive produced along with Christina Shams. His company, Carpe Noctem, produced the special along with Avesta Entertainment and Above Average.

Third time’s a charm for Rife, too, as it marks three straight for Netflix following Matt Rife: Natural Selection and Matt Rife: Lucid — A Crowd Work Special. The former, released Nov. 15, 2023, landed in the Top 10 in 42 countries, hit the top spot in the United States, Canada and South Africa and became the most viewed Netflix special for the latter half of 2023. After it debuted, Rife stayed in the Netflix fold by signing a deal for two specials and a development deal for a series to write and star in. He made good on the specials pact with Lucid, which debuted Aug. 13, 2024, and hit the global Top 10 again for two weeks.

News of the special comes as Rife is currently in the midst of an ongoing global tour, Matt Rife: Stay Golden, with dates this weekend in Michigan. He’s been continually selling out as he criss-crosses the states and international locations. He sold out two shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden and set sales records for Columbus’ Nationwide Arena and various arenas across North America including Seattle, Manchester, Anaheim, Calif. and more.

His other specials include the self-produced and distributed Only Fans, Matthew Steven Rife, Walking Red Flag, all of which helped propel him to this sort of homegrown superstar status. Rife has recently branched out from the stand-up stage to other forms of entertainment. He released a New York Times bestseller last year, Your Mom’s Gonna Love Me. The Simon & Schuster memoir trackes his journey to become an in-demand comedian before the age of 30 with musings on depression, failure, success and family.

On the acting front, he’s got a full slate. He is set to star opposite Owen Wilson in Jeremy Garelick’s Rolling Loud for Live Nation and American High. He also snagged a role in the eight episode limited series The Altruists (starring Anthony Boyle and Julia Garner) from Graham Moore and Jacqueline Hoyt about the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX.

For Wedding Crashers helmer David Dobkin, he’ll topline The Escort, and will star, co-write and produce The Chasm, a feature mockumentary comedy with Skydance Sports that follows an overconfident climber who chooses to proceed solo on a historic and potentially fatal rock climb. It was announced that he was set to star opposite Emma Roberts in Marriage Material for Trish Sie. His other credits include Netflix’s comedy series Mo opposite Mo Amer and Private Eye.

And all your favorite characters like Big Bird, Elmo, Oscar the Grouch, Grover, Cookie Monster, and many others. Also recommend the excellent doc film Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street about how they made this series and why it’s so special. Enjoy.

Here’s the first official trailer for Netflix’s next season of Sesame Street, direct from their YouTube:

“Season 56 reimagines Sesame Street, inviting children into the action and bringing them hand-in-hand through high-stakes stories, powerful learning moments, and laugh-out-loud surprises. And, as always, Sesame Street’s curriculum is designed to meet children’s most pressing needs — so our focus this season is on kindness and compassion, something we can all use more of today.” –Executive Producer Sal Perez

Netflix New Releases: November 2025

by jummy84 November 2, 2025
written by jummy84

The end of the almost decade-long Stranger Things saga; the debut of Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar contender; an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at Eddie Murphy’s life; Joel Edgerton’s best chance for a best actor nomination; an epic samurai battle royale action drama; a prestige series starring Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys; Richard Linklater’s love letter to the French New Wave; and welcome return of Elmo and friends are among the highlights of the new film and TV series launching on Netflix in November.

November is a huge movie month for Netflix as awards season gets underway. Among the prominent new features the streamer is launching this month that are worth checking out is the Sean Baker-produced Taiwanese drama Left-Handed Girl (Nov. 28). But perhaps the most high-profile is Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein, which hits the platform on Nov. 7. Starring Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz and Jacob Elordi as the monster, the feature debuted to rapturous acclaim at the Venice Film Festival, including a 14-minute standing ovation, and boasts a critic score of 85 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Just like Frankenstein, Sesame Street is back from the dead. Launching on Nov. 10 on Netflix is all-new episodes of the long-running and beloved children’s TV show. The streamer came to the rescue in May by inking a deal with Sesame Workshop for new episodes of the long-running children’s show, just months after Warner Bros. Discovery opted not to renew its output deal for the program.

On Nov. 12, Netflix releases the doc Being Eddie, an intimate look at the life and career of comedy legend Eddie Murphy. Joining Murphy in the doc are Jerry Seinfeld, Arsenio Hall, Brian Grazer, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Jamie Foxx, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Jerry Bruckheimer, John Landis, Kenan Thompson, Kevin Hart, Michael Che, Ruth Carter, Tracee Ellis Ross and Tracy Morgan. Being Eddie is directed by Angus Wall and produced by John Davis, John Fox, Charisse Hewitt-Webster, Terry Leonard and Kent Kubena.

Two TV titans link up for Netflix’s new prestige series The Beast in Me that debuts on Nov. 13. Starring Emmy-winners Claire Danes and Welsh superstar Matthew Rhys, the eight-episode show is a dramatic thriller about a man named Nile (Rhys) — previously suspected of killing his wife — moves into a house near Danes’ Wiggs, a grieving author. Brittany Snow and Natalie Morales round out the main cast, along with guest stars Jonathan Banks, David Lyons, Tim Guinee, Hettienne Park, Deidre O’Connell, Aleyse Shannon, Will Brill, Kate Burton, Bill Irwin, Amir Arison and Julie Ann Emery.

Also on Nov. 13, Netflix releases action series Last Samurai Standing, a project that has the strong potential to be the breakout Asian hit for the streamer in November. A live-action TV series adaptation of the Japanese manga series written by Shogo Imamura, the logline for Last Samurai Standing reads: “Set in the late 19th century during the Meiji period, as the age of the samurai approached its end, Last Samurai Standing takes place at the Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto. Come nightfall, 292 samurai warriors gather, lured by the promise of a grand prize of 100 billion yen. Among them is our protagonist, Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada), who enters this dangerous game with one goal: to save his ailing wife and child.”

On Nov. 14, Netflix debuts the prolific Richard Linklater’s latest feature project for the streamer, Nouvelle Vague. The Cannes-premiering dramedy is the filmmaker’s love letter to the highly influential French New Wave movement in cinema, and fictionally depicts the life of Jean-Luc Godard during the production of his classic film Breathless in 1959. The film stars Guillaume Marbeck as Godard, Zoey Deutch as Jean Seberg, and Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo.

Nov. 21 sees the launch of another Oscar hopeful for Netflix, Clint Bentley’s period drama Train Dreams. The film stars Aussie actor Joel Edgerton as a man who builds railways in the 1900s in the Pacific Northwest, and is more a meditation on a rapidly changing America. The cast also includes Felicity Jones, Clifton Collins Jr., Kerry Condon and William H. Macy. After premiering at Sundance this year, the film has steadily racked up critical acclaim, and The Hollywood Reporter‘s awards editor predicts the film has a solid chance for recognition in the best picture, best director and best actor categories.

And on Nov. 26, is the debut of the first part of the final season of phenomenon Stranger Things, not only Netflix’s biggest November project, but undoubtedly the streamer’s biggest for 2025. We return to Hawkins, Indiana in the fall of 1987 as the no-longer-kids are confronted with Vecna, the ruler of the Upside Down, once more and prepare themselves for one final showdown.

Season five’s cast includes Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Brett Gelman, Priah Ferguson, Jamie Campbell Bower, Cara Buono and Amybeth McNulty.

Movies added to Netflix in November include Zodiac, Blue Beetle, Charlie’s Angels, Crazy Rich Asians, Dear Santa, Doctor Sleep, Don’t Worry Darling, Dr. Dolittle, Dr. Dolittle 2, Elvis, Frances Ha, Game Night, Happy Christmas, The Hangover, The Hangover: Part II, The Hangover: Part III, I Know What You Did Last Summer, In the Heights, Isn’t It Romantic, Judas and the Black Messiah, Just Mercy, The LEGO Movie 2:, The Second Part, Life of the Party, The Little Things, Merry Liddle Christmas, The Nun II, Ocean’s 8, Paddington 2, The Patriot, Ready Player One, Tenet, This Is the End, Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas, The Way Back and Wonka.

‘A House of Dynamite’ Star Tracy Letts Talks ‘Reality’ of Netflix Film

by jummy84 November 2, 2025
written by jummy84

“A House of Dynamite” star Tracy Letts fears we may be cooked.

“Consider the possibility. There are a couple of existential crises we’re facing. So we should probably consider what that means if, maybe not in your lifetime, but your kid’s lifetime or whatever. What happens if we’re just all fucking done?” said the Pulitzer-winning playwright and character actor extraordinaire, who plays General Anthony Brady in the new political thriller directed by Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow. The film provides a chilling look at what could happen if a nuclear missile were launched at the United States.

Letts sits outside with IndieWire on the patio of a West Hollywood hotel, finally taking a breather after an intensive two days that saw him open his play “Mary Page Marlowe” at the Old Vic Theatre in London, wake up at 6 a.m. the next day to fly 14 hours to Los Angeles, and attend two screenings of “A House of Dynamite,” including its Los Angeles premiere. But even before it became the most-watched film on Netflix in one week, Letts was already happy with how audiences responded. “People seem to dig the movie, people are liking it, which is cool,” he said. “Or if they’re not, they’re not telling me, which is probably wise.”

'Terrifier 3'

Before he landed on what the film’s message may be, Letts signed on to “A House of Dynamite” simply “because it was a Kathryn project. And then when I read the script and saw the role she had in mind for me, that didn’t make it less interesting to me,” he said. “Everything about it for me was just ‘Go, go, go.’ I didn’t have any hesitation.” Though he identifies most with playing dad to the titular role in “Lady Bird” (“I’m a guy who likes to sit and read the paper and let the women make all the decisions”), the military role still felt close to home in a sense. “I’m a general and giving orders and that voice of authority, I can do it. They’re probably all just impersonations of my dad or whatever, but I can do it,” he said. Though “anybody who knows me knows I’m an old softy.”

Early questions Letts had for director Bigelow included “Is he George C. Scott in ‘Dr. Strangelove’? Is he a [war] hawk?” As he would later learn from his interactions with real-life generals advising him on his performance, there’s little time to discuss politics with only 18 minutes until a major American city is about to be wiped out by a missile. “He’s really just talking game theory. ‘If you do this, then they do that. If you don’t do this, then they might do that.’ It’s game theory. He just puts it out there for the president’s consideration. I was comfortable with all that because the argument made sense to me,” he said.

Again, Letts had access to multiple three- and four-star generals who had sat in STRATCOM, running through scenarios like the one seen in “A House of Dynamite.” He walked away impressed. “Those guys know their job intimately,” he said. “They drill [those scenarios] 400 times a year. So they’re very practiced at it. And the objective in the moment of crisis is a simple one. Collect information, pass information up the line.” If anything, it is the efficiency and clearheadedness of his character in particular that makes “A House of Dynamite” all the more terrifying.

“The scenario it presents is scarily plausible. There aren’t a lot of things that happen that couldn’t happen. It’s not a Martian who appears, right? This is not science fiction. This is just next to reality,” said Letts. “If you’re going to make that kind of movie, you can’t miss on some of the technical details. All that stuff’s got to be right.”

That all starts with the screenplay from Oscar nominee Noah Oppenheim, who, as the previous head of NBC News, has rubbed elbows with many of the players who would be involved in a National Security emergency. “People get mad at me if I make light of research,” said Letts, but “you do what you need to do. And certainly in a case like this where so much of the research has been done for you, which the dramaturgy is on the page, the research has been done, it’s been vetted, re-vetted, they surrounded me with all of the context I would need in order to be able to pretend with authority, which is all the job really entails as an actor. To be able to get a good haircut and put on the uniform and walk out on set and know the lines, hopefully, and be able to deliver them with some authority, [and] to deliver that language in a way that feels natural.”

Going through those motions, informed by all that research, the film proved to Letts that Americans “are not as prepared as we think.” He added, “This movie shows a scenario in which everything kind of goes right. The government’s functioning pretty well. Not all of the equipment necessarily functions the way we would want it to, but I think they even quote at one point that those [Ground-Based Interceptors] are supposed to be functioning at a 61 percent success rate, but even that’s under ideal circumstances.”

In the world of “A House of Dynamite,” “Everybody in the government is functioning well and thoughtfully, that’s if everybody is accepting the gravity of the moment and doing their jobs well.” And the President of the United States, played by Idris Elba, seems sensible. “Imagine a scenario in which he’s maybe not all the way there, or perhaps even manifestly irresponsible. Then it becomes a much scarier consideration,” said Letts.

Ultimately, “we’ve built a machine, a very complicated device. If all the parts function properly inside that device, if everything works the way it’s supposed to work, civilization’s over,” said the star of what his new film illuminates. “What if we just reconsider the machine entirely?” Letts mentions that he has been recently asked about a shot of Lincoln’s bust in “A House of Dynamite” and what that may invoke, something that also stood out to him the first time he saw the film.

“Of course, you immediately think about the presidents who have risen to the moment, those that haven’t,” he said. “But the second time watching it was like, ‘Oh, none of that matters.’ Civilization is wiped out. President? Meaningless. It doesn’t matter. It’s all gone.”

“Kathryn won’t cop to this,” but “artists are starting to grapple with this idea of what does it mean if we’re really done here?” said Letts. He uses Thomas Vinterberg’s recent series “Families Like Ours,” about Denmark being evacuated in response to climate change, as another example. These projects provide the warnings that, if not heeded, prove “it’s not going to get better. It’s only getting worse.”

With all that said, the actual experience making “A House of Dynamite” was still enjoyable. “It’s an ensemble piece. Everybody’s chipping in to help where they can, which is the nice thing about it,” said Letts. “There’s nobody who’s the obvious kind of awards player. It’s like we don’t have to do that. So everybody’s there for the right reasons. It’s just all Kathryn, Kathryn, Kathryn.”

Having now worked with Bigelow on her first film in nearly a decade, reminiscent of her other work like “The Hurt Locker” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” which both received Academy recognition, Letts is more excited at the thought of the director dipping even further back into her oeuvre. “I’m old. I remember seeing ‘Near Dark’ in the movie theater very well. And so I think of Kathryn as more varied than just this kind of documentary/military [style]. I know that she’s got more tools,” he said. “I hope she goes back to that stuff, frankly. I heard the word ‘Western’ at some point. I’d be thrilled if that were a reality.”

Letts himself has recently developed a reputation as the King of Physical Media, boasting of a collection of around 11,000 DVDs, so there is a slight irony in his latest film being distributed by a streaming service. “There will come a moment where I get to hold my hand up to say, ‘We should have this 4K available too,’” he joked, also campaigning for director David Fincher’s Netflix films, and Martin Scorsese’s Apple film “Killers of the Flower Moon” to release physical 4K copies.

However the film has made him feel about the world, Letts’ best experience with “A House of Dynamite” has been seeing it in a theater. “To have that Volker Bertelmann score just vibrating your sternum, and in a way sort of telling you when to breathe, or how to breathe throughout the movie, I just don’t think it’s going to play the same at home as it is on the big screen. So I hope people check it out in the movie theater.

“A House of Dynamite” is now out in select theaters nationwide and streaming on Netflix.

Netflix Approves 10-for-1 Stock Split to Make Shares ‘More Accessible’

by jummy84 October 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Netflix‘s shares are about to become more affordable.

The streaming giant announced Thursday that its board approved a 10-for-1 forward stock split of Netflix common stock. “The purpose of the stock split is to reset the market price of the Company’s common stock to a range that will be more accessible to employees who participate in the Company’s stock option program,” Netflix said in announcing the plan.

Netflix stock closed at $1,089.00 per share Thursday, down about 1% on the day but up nearly 23% year to date. On the announcement of the 10-for-1 split, shares rose more than 3% in after-hours trading.

Each Netflix shareholder of record as of the close of trading on Monday, Nov. 10, 2025, will receive, after the close of trading on Friday, Nov. 14, 2025, nine additional shares for every share held on the record date. Trading is expected to begin on a split-adjusted basis at market open on Monday, Nov. 17, 2025.

Netflix said the split will be effected through an amendment to the company’s amended and restated certificate of incorporation.

Netflix most recently enacted a seven-for-one stock split that took effect July 14, 2015.

Final Season of Netflix Hit Begins

by jummy84 October 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Nine years and five seasons later, Netflix‘s flagship series is finally coming to an end. “Stranger Things” will debut its fifth and final season this November, and the streamer has released a new trailer for the installment, promising a huge final battle for the beloved cast of characters.

Set in the fictional small town of Hawkins, Indiana, during the nostalgic days of the 1980s, “Stranger Things” follows a group of civilians — ranging from adults to teenagers — who encounter threats from the Upside Down, an alternate dimension teaming with monsters. Season 4 saw the cast confront the mysterious Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), an incredibly powerful telepath, in a battle that left Hawkins devastated and expanded the rift between the Earth and the Upside Down.

The trailer for Season 4 shows a bit of the fallout from the events of Season 4, as Hawkins is now under military quarantine from the United States government to contain the monsters of the Upside Down. In order to save the town, the kids agree to go on one final adventure to find and kill Vecna, who himself has plans involving Will Byers (Noah Schnapp).

The logline for the season reads: “The fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding. As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time.”

“Stranger Things” first premiered in July 2016, receiving critical acclaim and becoming a massive word-of-mouth hit for the streamer. Currently, the fourth season is the most-watched season of TV in Netflix’s history according to its own internal metrics, only ranking behind Season 1 of “Wednesday” and the limited series “Adolescence.” The series has also spawned a large multimedia franchise, including an ongoing Broadway stage production, “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” and an upcoming animated series, “Stranger Things: Tales From ’85.”

The series was created by identical twin team Matt and Ross Duffer, who also showrun and executive produce the series via their Upside Down Productions banner. Following the conclusion of the final season, the two will depart Netflix for Paramount, where they signed a four-year deal to produce new content for the studio. Shawn Levy of 21 Laps Entertainment and Dan Cohen also produce.

Season 5 features a huge ensemble cast that includes Bower, Schnapp, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Cara Buono, Amybeth McNulty, Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, Alex Breaux, and Linda Hamilton. The season will be split into three parts: the first, consisting of four episodes, will arrive on November 26. Three more episodes will debut on Christmas, and the finale arrives on New Year’s Eve. Each volume will debut on the streamer at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.

‘Nobody Wants This’ Season 2 Ratings: 8.6 Million Netflix Views

Season 2 of “Nobody Wants This” hit 8.6 million views in its first four days of streaming.

That took it to the No. 1 position on the Netflix Top 10’s English-language TV chart for the week of Oct. 20-26. However, the series still saw a 17% decrease from the viewership it achieved with its Season 1 premiere last year, which debuted with 10.3 million views in the same amount of time.

But the No. 1 title overall on Netflix was Kathryn Bigelow’s “A House of Dynamite,” leading the film chart with 22.1 million views in just three days. “The Perfect Neighbor” was a close second with 20.2 million views, though it had the full week to accrue viewership, as it had its debut at No. 1 with 16.7 million views the week before.

Back on the TV chart, “The Diplomat” Season 3 followed “Nobody Wants This” at No. 2 with 6.3 million views in its first full week of availability, up from its 4.8 million-view debut in four days the previous week. “Boots” took third place in its third week on the chart with 5.6 million views, while “Monster: The Ed Gein Story” charted at No. 4 with 5.1 million views in its fourth week.

Docuseries “Mob War: Philadelphia vs. The Mafia” debuted at No. 5 with 4.8 million views in its first five days, followed by the Oct. 20 edition of “Raw: 2025” with 2.6 million views. The bottom of the chart was dominated by repeat titles —

Netflix Doc ‘The New Yorker at 100’ – An Inside Look Official Trailer

“It’s only 100 years old? Look what it’s done.” Netflix has debuted their official trailer for a documentary film titled The New Yorker at 100, made by Oscar winning filmmaker Marshall Curry. It first premiered at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival and it’s also screening at the Denver Film Festival before debuting for streaming on Netflix in December. Along with The New Yorker Festival in NYC this weekend, of course. For the first time in its extensive history, The New Yorker opens up its offices to filmmaker Marshall Curry, allowing unprecedented access to its newsroom at a pivotal moment for all media – a rare look at what it takes to publish a century of intrepid journalism, generation-defining fiction, and unforgettable cartoons. “I’m fascinated by people with obsessions.” New Yorker at 100 follows all the editors, writers, fact-checkers, photographers, cover artists, and others who bring The New Yorker to life, providing a rare glimpse into the inner workings of one of the great print magazines of our time. This is executive produced by Judd Apatow, and features narration by Julianne Moore, stepping inside the offices in 2024 as they prepare their 100th anniversary issue. Looks like a very fascinating doc in so many different ways about publishing and beyond.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Marshall Curry’s doc The New Yorker at 100, from YouTube:

“The New Yorker is full of people who are obsessed with what they do, whether it’s exposing a government scandal or profiling an obscure musician or policing the use of commas. I wanted to introduce audiences to these obsessives — partly because I found them interesting and funny and insightful, and partly because I think what they do is really important. It’s a tough time for fact-based journalism, and I wanted audiences to understand and celebrate the important work that’s under threat. I knew we wouldn’t be able to capture every aspect of The New Yorker in one film, but I was excited to introduce people — give them a tasting menu — to this long-standing institution and to the vital significance of journalism in general.” –Director Marhsall Curry

It’s the fall of 2024, and editor David Remnick and his team at The New Yorker are preparing to face one of their most important deadlines yet: their seminal 100th anniversary issue due on newsstands in just a few months. Meanwhile, journalism is facing unprecedented challenges from every direction. In a new film narrated by Julianne Moore, The New Yorker at 100 gives viewers a rare glimpse inside the century-old machine, showing how the words and images printed on its pages have shaped politics and culture, from changing how we think about nuclear war to introducing the world to the Addams family. Using archival materials alongside interviews with heavy-hitting contributors like Hilton Als, Roz Chast, and Ronan Farrow as well as notable fans of The New Yorker including Jesse Eisenberg, Ronny Chieng, and Molly Ringwald, among others, the film provides a rare glimpse into the legacy and current dynamics of one of America’s preeminent publications. The documentary film brings viewers inside its peerless fact-checking department, lively story meetings, and delightfully idiosyncratic cartoon selection process that showcases the journalistic integrity & intrepid creative spirit required to preserve a celebrated institution.

The New Yorker at 100 is a documentary directed by acclaimed, Oscar-winning doc filmmaker Marshall Curry, director of the films Street Fight, Racing Dreams, If a Tree Falls: Story of Earth Liberation Front, Point and Shoot, SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, and the “P.O.V.” doc series previously. Produced by Xan Parker. Exec produced by Judd Apatow, Michael Bonfiglio, Josh Church, Amanda Rohlke, Helen Estabrook, Sarah Amos. This initially premiered at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival this year. Netflix will debut Curry’s The New Yorker at 100 film streaming on Netflix starting December 5th, 2025 this fall.
