Kiran Rao on star kids vs outsiders: ‘Nepo kids’ have the obstacle of perception

by jummy84 October 24, 2025

The debate around the rising cost of entourage has taken over the Hindi film industry, and director Kiran Rao admits the high cost of teams is one of the reasons that pushes her tow work with newcomers. She launched three new actors–Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta and Sparsh Shrivastava–with Laapataa Ladies last year, and she asserts that they came without any such baggage.

“Organically, they just fit the scenario of an independent film and I make films that way. Even if the budgets have grown from Dhobi Ghat to Laapataa Ladies, in spirit, my filmmaking is very independent, the idea being that everybody on set is treated kind of equally. We believe in having fair working hours, but making things as tightly as possible, with as few resources and trying not to be wasteful. Fresh actors are much easier following those rules,” she says.

Having launched three outsiders with her film and seen her ex-husband, actor Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan, make their acting debuts around the same time, did she see any difference in the audience’s perception towards them? “When you have a so-called ‘nepo kid’ coming into the industry, they have a certain kind of baggage that they cannot avoid. They are constantly looked at through the lens of privilege, that they are getting there with all the kinds of shortcuts that other kids don’t have. I understand that but in most cases, now that I know so many film families, I’ve seen how hard and equally difficult sometimes their journey is. The obstacles that they have are different, they may not be worse or better, but they are the obstacles of perception,” she responds.

Elaborating further, Kiran Rao says, “In the case of any other new actor, there is no perception of you and people are willing to grow with you, understand your strengths and love you for your weaknesses. Whereas they come at a nepo kid with a different set of perceptions and expectations. So those are the things that any child from a film family has to deal with. Ultimately, your work will speak for itself and many times, it takes a film family child, many films in order to become successful. That’s the journey of most star kids in front of the camera.”

Ask her if she feels it’s actually easier for an outsider to make a mark in the film industry than a star kid, and Kiran answers in the affirmative. “I actually agree with it. I also feel that in today’s world people want to discover talent. They don’t like to be told that this person is there. They have a curiosity about stars and their children, but in order to make a person a star, they feel a responsibility,” she says.

However, Kiran highlights a much important issue. “Honestly, the conversation here to talk about is the death of stardom in some ways. There is no star system today. Stars are now being found in different ways. It’s in people with a following, who the audience look forward to seeing. They could come from a Reel, a series, a film, or it could even be a director. Those are the new stars, whose work is being followed more closely and sometimes it won’t be somebody even you and I know because everybody has their own little sort of echo chambers and following. That’s now the new world, the idea of stardom has changed,” she ends.

Stellan Skarsgård on Son Being Bullied, Called “Nepo Baby”

Hopper Penn and Dylan Penn

“I can see being really pissed that I got this role, as someone else,” Dylan told W after dad Sean Penn directed her in the 2021 drama Flag Day. At the same time, she added, as a working actress “I’ve been auditioning forever. I’ve been rejected forever.”

Regarding the kerfuffle over her brother starring in a Spielberg-daughter-directed short, Dylan stressed, “This is the business. It is about who you know. Always. Whether you’re the son of Sean Penn or not.”

Hopper, who made his movie debut in Sean’s film The Last Face, told E! News in February that the nepo baby conversation didn’t really affect him.

“I’m like, ‘If you like it, cool. If you don’t, great,'” he explained, having just made Devil’s Peak with mom Robin Wright. “And if you think that there’s nepotism going on, I really don’t care because I’m gonna do the work just as professional as everybody else, and I’m not gonna come there and do it half-ass because I’m working with my dad, I’m working with my mom.'”

Working with his father, Hopper noted, was the same “great nightmare” for him as it was for all the other actors who weren’t related to the director.

And on any project, he added, “if I messed up on the film the first day, I’d be fired just like everyone else. Or, if I was terrible, I’ll be terrible. And I have been terrible.”

Stellan Skarsgard’s son ‘bullied’ for being a ‘nepo baby’

Stellan Skarsgard’s youngest son gets “bullied” at school for being a “nepo baby”.

Stellan Skarsgard’s son has been bullied

The 74-year-old actor told how 13-year-old Kolbjörn – who made his acting debut in 2022 miniseries Clark and has had a number of other roles since – “doesn’t have any friends” and feels isolated because other kids have questioned his talent and claimed he’s only got work because of his famous name.

The father-of-eight told Vulture: “My 13-year-old, Kolbjörn, the youngest, suffers from that.

“When his pals at school call him nepo baby, he gets so sad. He doesn’t have any friends at school. He gets isolated. Cruel kids — or cruel and ignorant. They love it on the internet.

“But it is such a bulls*** thing. Because nobody would hire you, at least not for anything good, if you’re not good enough.”

The Sentimental Value actor – who has Alexander, 49, Gustaf, 44, Sam, 43, Bill, 35, Eija, 33, and Valter, 29, with ex-wife My Skarsgård and Ossian, 16, and Kolbjörn with spouse Megan Everett – has not “reduced” himself to being just a father and thinks his kids have benefitted from his passion for his work.

He said: “Your work is you to such a big extent. It’s not like being an accountant. If you’re a painter, if you’re a musician, you go to work with you and your own material. Combining that with family life is hard.

“But if you become a really good father and you are at home more than you want to be, then suddenly you reduce yourself….

“You’ve become some other person. It’s like you would think differently. You would act differently. You need your creative art. It’s your stimuli.

“And you are more fun to the kids when you come home and tell them a story that you can’t tell them if you haven’t been stimulated. I’m trying to defend myself now.”

Stellan has a “very good relationship” with his kids.

He quipped: “I wouldn’t have spent 50 years with them otherwise. But they have no respect for me just because I’m their father. Because that’s bulls***. You shouldn’t be respected for five minutes of joy.”

The Mamma Mia star “usually” takes not just his family but a number of their friends along when he works overseas.

He said: “You also have to bring your wife’s friends because otherwise she will be alone in a foreign city babysitting.

“You have to get some of the kids’ friends. They’re a social functioning unit. We had 43 Swedes living in Frescati outside of Rome when I was shooting the first Exorcist movie there.

“I worked 12 hours a day because I was the lead. I barely saw them. I saw them on the weekends. But the house was vibrating with joy because they were having a party. I made a lot of money on the film, but there wasn’t that much left. It was worth it.”

Allison Williams refutes nepo baby label

by jummy84 October 21, 2025

Allison Williams doesn’t accept the nepo baby label – insisting she put in the hard work before making her breakthrough as an actress.

Allison Williams insists she had to work for her acting career despite her nepo baby status

The Girls star – who is the daughter of former NBC news anchor Brian Williams and TV producer Jane Gillan Stoddard – has faced accusations that she is a nepo baby, but explained that she spent plenty of time working behind the scenes on movies and TV shows instead of “being hatched out of an egg” and getting roles.

In conversation with Girls co-star Andrew Rannells for Interview magazine, Allison said: “That is exactly what people picture for nepo babies, and they’re not that wrong. But there were some stops along the way.

“Before I started acting professionally, I did several jobs on sets in support positions. One of them was being Tina Fey’s second assistant the summer she was shooting 30 Rock.

“I was also a PA, technically an intern, on A Prairie Home Companion, which was Robert Altman’s last movie. That was a stacked cast. I learned so much from that job.”

The M3GAN star continued: “And then I was the utility stand-in on the pilot of Boardwalk Empire, the summer going into my senior year of college. That was a job that I got from family connections. It’s not a level playing field.

“This girl shows up and is hired, not because I was a good height for this show – sometimes I was on apple boxes. (Martin) Scorsese deserved better, but here he was with me.

“But every one of these roles was an opportunity to see the machinations of a set, to understand how the rhythm of the day works. Where there’s tension, you can feel it.

“And I found myself, as I was shooting the pilot for Girls, so grateful not to be learning everything at the same time.”

Allison finds acting to be a “stressful” career, even though she has the “safety netting” that most other performers do not, thanks to her parents’ background.

The 37-year-old star said: “It’s stressful. One of the things that is true about nepo babies, certainly for me, is that there was a floor through which I was not going to fall.

“There was safety netting, and that fundamentally changes your risk calculation.

“But a lot of people, when they’re deciding to become actors, have to really fortify themselves against the fight that’s coming, the years and years of rejection, trying to figure out how to pay the bills. I certainly got luckier than most.”

‘I Love My Nepo Babies, I Want To Know Why We Are Criticised’, Tanisha Mukherjee Opened Up On Nepotism

by jummy84 September 9, 2025

Daughter of veteran Bollywood actress Tanuja and sister of Kajol, Tanisha Mukherjee has given such a statement about nepotism and outsiders, which is being discussed a lot on the internet. She said that she likes nepotism babies a lot. Tanisha recently gave an interview in which she was asked about the criticism Bollywood faced in recent years. To this, she said, ‘We say, Make in India. But Bollywood is already made in India. Indian artists, Indian topic… why are we not getting these concessions?’

Tanisha Mukherjee

She further said, ‘Why are we being punished? Why are we constantly criticizing Bollywood? This thing hurts me a lot, because I am a Bollywood child. I love my industry. I love my film fraternity. I like the people who come to my fraternity. I like the people born in this industry. I love my nepo babies and I want to know why we are being criticised!’

Tanisha Mukherjee

Let us tell you that the actress further said, ‘Let me tell you one thing very clearly. When you come from a film family, the first thing you think about is the film industry. You don’t come to the film industry to ‘take’ from it. Yes, you want to be an actor in the industry, want to be a director, want to be a producer, but you will always think about giving something to the film industry.’

Tanisha Mukherjee

Tanisha said about outsiders, ‘I think somewhere, people who come from outside do not have any loyalty towards our industry. They come to take. Maybe if they have children and their children want to be a part of the industry, then they will think about giving something back. Whether it is Rohit Shetty or my brother-in-law, they take care of the stuntmen… Families from the industry make such films that give something back to the industry, nurture the industry.’

Anais Gallagher was ‘massively in denial’ about being a nepo baby

Anais Gallagher was “massively in denial” about being a nepo baby when she was younger.

Noel Gallagher’s daughter Anais was ‘in denial’ about being a nepo baby

The 25-year-old photographer – who is the daughter of Oasis rocker Noel Gallagher and his first wife Meg Matthews – was just a teenager when she landed her first job presenting CBBC show Friday Download and she recalled being warned she had to be “really good” or viewers would believe she had only been hired because of her famous dad.

She told Grazia magazine: “I never wanted to be an actor but I wanted to be on Blue Peter, things like that.

“I was 12 or 13, before I went on the producer of the show said, ‘You have to be really good, you can’t mess up. If you do, people will say I only put you on the show because of your dad.’

“I think it was fair. It was harsh but completely true.

“When I was younger, I was massively in denial. ‘No, my dad doesn’t help me.’ Or, ‘I’m talented in my own right.’ I pushed against it.”

When Anais was studying for her fine art photography degree at Camberwell College of Art, she admitted she was “embarrassed” by Noel’s fame and her own privilege.

She said: “I went in on myself. I was really embarrassed of my own privilege and would not want to talk about who my dad was at uni. I felt the need to caveat every single thing I said with ‘but I’m really lucky.”

But these days, Anais feels “very lucky” for the support she has received from her parents – particularly because Noel and Meg are “cool”.

She said: “I’m not delusional about the fact that my dad has helped me out immensely. I never had to get a part time job. If I needed a new camera, he would buy me one.

“I’m very lucky that not only have they given me such a comfortable life, but my parents are very cool.

“Lots of people have parents who are really rich and help [them] out, but they’re a horrible Tory politician or something. At least my dad is a cool dad.”

With Oasis currently on their long-awaited reunion tour, Anais has spent a lot of time with her model cousins, Lennon, 25, and 24-year-old Gene, and their “incredible” grandmother.

She said: “They’re the only people who fully understand what’s going on and how crazy it is, the before and after. We were brought up the same. We share the same incredible grandmother, but I am her favourite.

“She’s the coolest person ever, but she’s not a****. She’s the opposite of a stage mum. She’s like, ‘It’s not for me.’ “

The blonde beauty has been dating Callum Scott Howells for three years and joked she has now become a “nepo girlfriend” to the It’s A Sin actor after landing reportage work on his projects.

She quipped: “I maybe jump from nepo baby to nepo girlfriend, he’s managed to get me jobs on his last two film sets.

“We’re a massive part of each other’s lives. He and I see each other nearly every day. I’m such a champion of his work. I’ve been there every step of the way. I’m constantly running lines with him, things like that.”
