Neighbours icon will be missing from final ever episodes, boss confirms

For the second time in just a few years, Neighbours is preparing for what looks set to be the beloved Australian soap’s final ever episode – but one of the show’s most iconic characters sadly won’t be involved.

According to boss Jason Herbison, Toadie Rebecchi star Ryan Moloney – who departed the soap after 30 years earlier this year – was unavailable to reprise his role in the finale, which was filmed back in July.

“We asked Ryan [Moloney] to return as Toadie,” he explained in an interview with TV Week. “He was unavailable sadly, but he does of course get a mention.”

Although Toadie will be absent, a number of familiar faces from the show’s past are expected to appear as soap draws to a close.

Some of the characters confirmed to return to Ramsay Street for one last hurrah include Shane Ramsay (Peter O’Brien), Melanie Pearson (Lucinda Cowden), Jimmy Williams (Darcy Tadich), Ned Willis (Ben Hall) and Roxy Canning (Zima Anderson) – and there could be an extra surprise or two in store, too.

Herbison also teased that the episode will include “a few Easter eggs for the fans” and explained why he felt the need to end the show in a very different way from the previous finale in 2022, before the show had been rescued by Amazon.

“I couldn’t end it the same way as I did last time,” he said. “I knew we were losing the Nunawading Studios and backlot imminently, which was different to the last time.

“With so much love for the show I felt I should craft an ending that would give the show a chance to come back in different ways that didn’t rely on the studios. This is what the finale sets out to do.”

It was confirmed back in February that the soap was to be axed again after Amazon opted against renewing it beyond their original 460-episode commission, with the final episode set to air on Thursday 11th December.

When filming concluded in July, Herbison said: “Neighbours is a special show and it’s been a privilege to make the recent seasons for our loyal viewers around the world. We have added 460 episodes to our legacy of over 9,000 episodes, something we all feel proud of.

“Once again, we will be resting the residents of Ramsay Street on a hopeful note, with some tantalising possibilities for a future chapter.”

Harry Styles facing opposition from neighbours over plans to build ‘monster mansion’

Harry Styles is facing opposition from neighbours over his plans to build a “monster mansion”.

Harry Styles is facing opposition from neighbours over his plans to build a ‘monster mansion’

The 31-year-old former One Direction singer bought the first of two houses in north London for £8.8million in April 2019, added a second adjoining home for £4million, and last year purchased a third property nearby, according to documents seen by The Daily Telegraph – and is now facing claims his proposal to join the two could obstruct natural light from surrounding houses.

He was granted permission in April to redevelop the site on the condition wildlife habitats, including hedgehog and bat boxes, were installed.

Under the proposals, Harry intends to build what has been described as a “monster mansion” featuring a master suite with four dressing rooms, a gallery, drawing room, TV room, basement cinema, pool, sauna, gym and landscaped garden with a water feature.

But some local residents have raised concerns.

One neighbour told The Telegraph: “It’s sad living next to a building site all the time. This road didn’t used to be like this.

“All the houses are now constantly being bought by millionaires and redone.

“There’s another house down at the bottom of the road, which I’m sure will be bought up and renovated like the others.

“There’s also unfortunately less community among the neighbours than there was since people have moved on from the area.”

Two neighbours have lodged formal complaints to the council over Harry’s plans, warning their legal rights to light could be affected.

Representatives for one homeowner wrote: “My client is also deeply concerned about their private legal Rights to Light that might be infringed by virtue of the implementation of the proposal or a similar scheme of this nature.”

Another complaint said: “The building will be much larger in scale to all existing properties on the road, which are two stories, therefore out of scale.

“We appreciate that the building was originally three stories, and the planning application is to restore the building; however, the majority of the road did not exist when it was three stories, and the buildings that exist were outbuildings.”

In planning submissions, Harry’s representatives said: “The proposed development has been carefully crafted to bring the building back as one of the great Hampstead houses.

“It proposes to amalgamate the two houses, along with internal and alterations, extensions to the second, ground and lower ground floors, and extensive landscaping in order to reinstate and provide substantial enhancement to the Grade II listed building.”

They added meetings had been held with residents who raised questions about daylight and construction disruption.

A daylight and sunlight study was subsequently commissioned, concluding there would be “a negligible impact on neighbouring properties in terms of daylight and sunlight”.

Harry aims for the development to be completed by October 2027.
